  • In this second episode of “Assassin’s Creed: Real History” we shall review the history of Rashīd ad-Dīn Sinān, one of the most renowned leaders of the Syrian Assassins.
If you have any topic requests for a future video, in which you would like me to research the real history and compare it to the game’s representation, please leave me a comment!

Please note that my original video on this topic, made over two year ago, was removed by RUclips around the start of our hiatus. I tried to re-upload the video but was unsuccessful. For that reason, I felt this was a fitting subject for the second episode in this revival series.
    Disclaimer
I am an amateur historian. History is not my official field of study, but rather a passion. This series acts as my hobby and as a way to share with you the real history behind characters, groups, events and locations that are depicted in the Assassin’s Creed video game series. Although I work hard to be as detail-oriented as possible, I am clearly not without fault and therefore welcome you to let me know whether you feel I have missed anything important or have misrepresented something in my video.

I wouldn't say that the Assassins were NEVER expected to return from their assassination. There were a few stealthy kills and even fewer public kills in which the fida'i escaped unharmed. Examples would be Abu Sa'ad, he was killed by the Assassins in the great mosque of Hamadan, 1125. They stabbed him to death and fled immediately, leaving no clue or trace behind them. Caliph Al-Mustarshid which was found killed in his tent.

That's a fair point. I could have phrased it better and said that the assassins weren't always expected to return from their missions. As for your other comment, I would have to agreed that Sinan is definitely a fascinating individual. The way he was able to masterfully read the political landscape of the Holy Land and make the necessary moves to ensure the continued existence of his order in Syria in the time of the Crusades was rather impressive. The fact that so much about him is shrouded in mystery makes it even more intriguing. Thanks for the insight and it's great to see you back in the comments!

The "Old Man of the Mountain" refers to Hasan Sabah, the actual founder of the Assassins order. Oddly enough, his best friend was the mathematician and poet Omar Khayyam (10th century Persia). The two later parted ways. In reality, Hasan Sabah and the sect of the Assassins were religious. While Omar Khayyam was a skeptic/freethinker. The quotes of al-Mualim at the end of AC1 'knowledge is sorrow' & Tree of Knowledge is not the Tree of Life, etc. were actually derived from Omar Khayyam's poetry.

In my opinion, Sinan is the most fascinating historical figure ever. He once sent a letter to Saladin saying "I am a lion and only other lions frighten me", and went on about how Saladin's attacks have disappointed him. And, oh man, the legends about him. Not to mention finding source material from various medieval chroniclers and historians about him.
I'd do anything to know the truth about this mysterious man. Did he really claim he was divine? Was he really independent from Alamut? How did he become such a legendary figure?

Al Muallim's real name is Raşidüddin Sinan el-İsmaili.
The name of the Assassin(Haşhaşin,Haşhaşiyye) has nothing to do with Hassan Sabbah's period. The name of the Assassin was mentioned for the Nizarı-İsmaili(Nizar-Ismaili) sect of Syria. They didn't take drugs. There is no such thing as the Garden of Eden.

A version of how Saladin agreed terms with sinan is that he sent a messager with the orders of delivering it to Saladin personally. Once the messenger said that the message was personal, Saladin emptied the room of soldiers except two men. The messenger repeated that the message should be heard only by him. Saladin said: "those two are like my sons and will not leave from my side. Either accept that and give me the message or take your leave". The messenger then said to Saladin's 'sons': "if I commanded you, in the name of my lord (Sinan), to kill this man (Saladin) right here and now, would you do it?" They said yes and pulled out their swords and then said: "command as you wish". Saladin was shocked and agreed on peace.

Because of this game (which I played over and over again when it first came out), I bought at least 5 books about the Ismailis and Templars and the Crusades as well. Who says Video Games rot brains? I did not know the tenet, “nothing is true, everything is permitted” is based on an alleged fact! I have played every AC game and I just assumed that was purely fictional....wow! I know Im late to the game on these vids but Im not sorry. Thanks again!

    do garnier and sibrand

    • @vynonyoutube1418
      @vynonyoutube1418 7 лет назад

There isn't much info on either of them (especially Sibrand), although there are quite a few differences compared to their real life counter parts. I'm taking most of this information from Wikipedia (and most of the info i found about them there does line up with other sources for the most part), so if you find other information about the 2, please feel free to add up, or correct me.
Sibrand is sometimes considered the first Grand Master (Hochmeister by their terms) of the Teutonic Order, and had the position in the year 1190. He was replaced the same year by an individual named Konrad (implying that Sibrand died that year, or lost his position somehow). This conflicts with his portrayal in the game, where Sibrand is still the Teutonic Knights' Grand Master, despite the fact that it's the year 1191, 1 year after he lost his position in 1190 in real life to Konrad. Though another source does say he was Grand Master until 1192, which means that Sibrand shouldn't even be dead in the game (although I don't think this source is as reliable). There's also no mention of Sibrand being paranoid or atheist like he is in the game.
And as for Garnier De Naplouse, his name in the game is different than his real life counterpart, though not by much. Instead of his last name being "De Naplouse", it actually was "De Nablus". One huge conflict between his game and real life counter parts is that Garnier was the Grand Master of the Knights Hospitalier from 1190 to 1192,
even taking part in the Battle Of Arsuf (the event in the game when Altair kills Robert De Sable, which happens after Garnier's death in the game) but in the game, Garnier dies in 1191, before the Battle Of Arsuf. Another important mention about Garnier is that he played a huge part in winning the Battle Of Arsuf for the Crusaders. Richard The Lionhearted's order towards the Hospitaliers to hold their ground resulted in pretty big losses, which made Garnier and Baldwin De Carreo (doesn't appear in the game) disobey Richard and charge towards the Saracens, joined in seconds later by their fellow Knights Hospitalier. Because of this, Richard ordered a full charge, which overwhelmed the Saracens (so pretty much if it wasn't for Garnier, the Saracens would have won). And there's also no mention of him being a mad doctor who experiments on people.

The military strategy of the Assassins depended on the assassinations of "guerrillas" who did not care about death in order to achieve their goal. Whereas, these guerrillas were terrorizing the rulers and the princes who were against them, and they managed to assassinate many very important personalities at that time
