Dude, after years of camera drives, I just started the FPV hobby. I've watched dozens of your videos, but this one changed my life. I have a Tinyhawk II FS and a TX12. It used to ZOOM straight up on the tiniest bit of throttle. It is definitely more SANE now. Thanks a bunch!
I would never have managed to get my first quad build airborn without your helpful videos and after losing it three times I now hope to be able to keep it. Many thanks.
This hobby really is in sync with itself, CurryKitten uploaded a video about 9 hours ago talking about how to tame the Mobula7 using Betaflight throttle limiting. :)
Except CurryKitten has a great solution to being able to switch between indoor & outdoor throttle limiting - simply setup different Rateprofile's so you can use a switch on your TX to go between the two, without having to go back to Betaflight.
Good Point. It's great too since you get a lot of great solutions, variations, and the overlap helps reinforce what you decide what's the most common solution, simplest or best.
I remembered the most simple way of switching between Rateprofiles; by using Stick Commands. There's literally nothing else to setup on your TX or Betaflight beyond a 2nd Rateprofile for the lower throttle. edit: Scratch that, Joshua pointed out it changes PID profiles not Rate profiles.
Finally!!! First time I was able to have some semblance of control on my Mobula6!!! Was able to use your info on BF 4.3 GUI. Now, to charge all my little batteries and practice!!! Thanks!!!!
Hey Joshua, great minds thinking a like and all that, I did a video about this very subject earlier today - gives me confidence that I was on the right lines if you're talking about it as well :) Some people may have already mentioned it, but as throttle_limit stuff is part of the rateprofile, so it's easy to switch different throttle limits around this way. You could use the adjustment tab, but in my example (I was using the X-Lite and had run out of switches) I simply used the Betaflight OSD to switch rateprofiles - so very easy to move your limits for inside/outside (in the case of the Mobula7 at least)
The easiest way to switch between Rateprofiles is by using Stick Commands - don't need to go into the Betaflight OSD or setup a switch on your TX & corresponding Betaflight setting. github.com/martinbudden/betaflight/blob/master/docs/Controls.md

Absolutely brilliant video for FPV learners (like me). Having flown 700 Helicopters 3D its a whole new learning curve. JB (Joshua Bardwell) is the FPV Drone master. Sit, Watch and Learn.
I like using a custom curve tuned to each model, this allows me a fast ramp up to hover, a nice long slow ramp through the mid throttle then another fast/steep ramp up when I want balls-out.
Awesome video. I just now (barely) mastered what you taught and now I'm working on variable authority using the sliders. I've managed to get pitch/roll to be less/more effective with one slider by multiplying them in the mixer, but I am having a devil of a time using the other slider to give variable throttle authority. Keep up the good work!

Great I just built my Tyro99 You and others are great and a big help. Greetings from New Zealand. We have a few know it all renigages that will destroy it for us all here.
Thanks! This is very helpful. I am learning FPV with a Freestyle 2 but the only place I have to fly is in the yard and there is not a lot of room and a ton of trees. When you don't have much space, a little power seems like a lot of power. When I fly at work after the workday is over there are big fields with small trees spaced out nicely. Full power is great. At home though, I'm running 1s to slow things down but I am still sometimes finding myself looking down on trees when I didn't think I had given it that much throttle.
Amazing this and your other videos are so helpful and make it so simple for 'beginners' to understand the concept, you know 'teach a man to fish as opposed to give a man a fish' ... ...... kind of way!! Learnt a lot from JC of project Blue Falcon on using Taranis and I continue to learn from you. Thanks for making this hobby enjoyable !!!
I use the openTX method on the same switch as my flip over after crash, that way my throttle is limited to whatever percentage I want but when I switch to flip over after crash, betaflight is reading a 100% throttle to flip and not my limited amount. That extra amount of power to flip is especially helpful with whoops.

I mostly fly my mobula in my small apartment, without throttle scaling, without any problems and I've only been flying for a few months. It has definitely helped my throttle management. And I don't have to mess with betaflight. Then when I want to fly it outside I just take it out there and open it up.
I'm new to PV, and it's weird that every time I have a question/problem, Bardwell seems to have a video about it. He's like some kind of FPVKnowItAll. :-D Thanks Joshua.
Hi Joshua, maybe this is some useful info. The throttle limit in Betaflight is assigned to a rateprofile. So if you would set up 2 or more identical rate profiles but change the throttle limits between the different profiles, then you can easily switch between the different profiles via OSD. Or if you use the "adjustments tab" in betaflight you can even put it on a switch. This is how you could easily switch between a "indoor" mode and "outdoor" mode of your quad (not only 2S whoops).

I do the TX change via a mix instead of inputs and use a pot to change the amount. This way I dial up the throttle as required. With this I can test hover a very powerful quad in a small area with almost no chance of a runaway. I set the power so low it barely hovers on max throttle. The mix is: CHx:IThr Weight(100%) *= S1 Weight(50%) Offset 50% += S1 Weight(50%) Offset -50% What this does is it changes S1 into a percentage (0-100) and multiplies the throttle by that scale. The next part uses the same S1 percentage to lower the min throttle so the base is always -100. I also remove trim from my throttle (so that the any bump to the trims does not change throttle output). Quad's never need trims.

They should add something like this to the OSD settings menu. For now, using throttle max endpoint on the Taranis is much easier and accessable in the field on the fly.
Hi Joshua, great information for beginners. But one thing I want to mention is, using 3-pos switch to change the throttle scale, by only using SC-UP and SC-MID, if you accidently switched to SC-DOWN your throttle output will be constant zero which means 50% throttle. This might shot your quad to the moon. In this case I suggest to use !SC-UP instead of SC-MID, or put another 3rd scale on SC-DOWN.
i love finding out new things about the taranis series. just makes the value of the x7 (even the x7s which i bought) so much more, compared to simple radios of the past. so many ways to customize it it's crazy.
@Joshua Bardwell I have been doing something similar for about 6 months now. I setup my throttle so that most of the range is very low, but the the very top of the throttle stick [>98%] jumps to full throttle. In other words, I have 0-75% throttle linear, and then 100% at the very top. So, for example, I cannot command 90% throttle. I really like this because on my 6s quad, anything over 75% throttle is just ludicrous speed anyway. I did this with my spektrum transmitter rate adjust that lets you set points on a linear graph. I made a negative linear throttle curve for the whole range except chopped it back to normal at the very top.
Yes, Joshua, there is such a thing, as I just found out on my maiden flight (GepRC Mark 4 HD GPS - my first fpv quad). :( I know you're going to show me the way. Thank you! Dang thing shot up in the air like a rocket and I got scared!
Thanks so much for this video Joshua, I’ve been attempting to fly my new TinyHawk 2 Freestyle, but the throttle is so sensitive, this should do the trick.
How did you find it? I'm wanting to do the same with my TH2F... the hoverpoint is basically at 10-15% and want it to be a bit easier to handle when flying slow... Does putting on a scale mean you loose the max top end output that was there before... or does it just make it easier to handle? I"m not sure... thinking maybe a throttle curve might be the better option here...
@@InfinityDrones Hi Infinity, yes I followed Bardwell’s tutorial and put it on a switch so I could turn it on and off. I really liked it, as a noob it really helped me with my flying. I tried 50% but that was too much, and I found that 20% was perfect. I don’t use much anymore, but it’s there if I need it. If I remember correctly, yes not only is the top end lowered but the entire scale is lowered by the % that you decide to use.
Hi Joshua, thanks for this video. I was wondering if you could make an updated video using taranis qx7, because when I tried to follow and adapt this step by step I found out that the interface of the Mixer page is very different Thanks for your excelent job 🙂👍
Josh, You should really take a look at "project Mockingbird" for the whoops! I set up my tinyhawk with it last night and it is amazing how it feels, You can have your quad setup for "inside flying" and (acro outside flying) I cant tell you how much I recommend trying it out! Then maybe a video to help out some others make there whoops amazing.
Mark Thompson didn’t he write a few pages of that? I thought I recall him saying in another video. I’m sure he knows about it, this dude knows everything there is to know about whoops, quads etc.
Hey Joshua, thanx for the awesome vids man, so much help for noobs like myself....;D...much appreesch...! What I did on my Mobula7 was to simply move the throttle MID to 0.00 and then to add throttle EXPO(between 0.55 and 0.35 depending on skill level) in BetaFlight - now low throttle is nice and tame but still have full throttle on full stick deflection....so could essentially fly in and outdoors with the single throttle setting.(I don't have another switch on my DX6i to add the throttle switch the way you did) ...If all that makes sense...;P
Hi JB... Congratulations again for u excelent work... I have the opose case... I need raise 75 % to fly 1 mt up. How i can do to scale for get more response.... Thank in advance
Can't do it. I did everything like in the video and on the channels monitor it only shows any thrust output when the switch is in the position that corresponds to the mixer source. That is I configured three inputs: th1 at 100%, th2 at 75% and th3 at 50% and the channel monitor bar only reacts to thrust movements at 100% if I set the mixer source at th1 but doesn't react to stick movements in th2 and th3 positions at all. I can change the mixer source to th2 of course and then the stick only works in th2 switch position - at 50% of course, but still it doesn't let me change anything by switching to th1 or th3. Any result of such switching is that thrust becomes dead.....
Hello Joshua, thank you for your videos and the help you have given. This is my first post ever and wanted to know if I could private message you on a build that I'm having trouble with. I tried all the forums and watched countless videos but still stuck on a problem. Let me know if you would be willing to help and again thank you for all the information you have given us. Kent.
Hey JB...I just set a Throttle limit in betaflight and now my quad won’t arm...it is the tiny hawk freestyle...Do I HAVE to change settings in Radio? THANKS JB! You are the MAN!!
You have to look at the arming status code that is telling you why it won't arm. Simply setting a throttle limit shouldn't cause it not to arm. Type "status" in the CLI and see what the code is.
Great video as always... I'd like to point out you can do that on many Tx's and set to a switch also..... I'd also like to point out another way I like anyways is to go into Betaflight/ pid tuning/ Throttle expo.... I'm running at .20 expo.... now I can keep it level a lot easier doing 90 around the house without bouncing it off the ceiling and still have full power.. lol... keep up the good work!
Long time viewer, first time commenter. After so many problems, I got my quad into the air and throttle response was wild. With this I developed insights and simply used throttle curve. It got much smoother, but just before landing throttle response doesn't seem to improve (with quite steep curve at far left). It slams. Think it is beyond curve's authority. Is there a better way to further smooth out last minute response, by like... air-mode or anti-gravity. Not very sure what terms mean, but just looking for right direction. Thanks a lot for all your teachings. I learned a lot.
theres a sight issue with the way youve assigned switches, if you go to 3rd position o switch youll loose cotrol of throtte. i found this out on a plane seting up duall rates ad accidentally switched to 3rd position eded up with no aileron or elevator control. i added a third line copy set to the 3rd position, there is a way to do it with just 2 lies on a 3 position switch
hi, joshua , im using a mobula 7 fc, on flysky and when i throttle lil be up and motors spin for a half of second and stops?? whats wrong with it? thanks for your help
It turns out that you CAN switch the betaflight throttle limit on a switch. CurryKitten shows how here: ruclips.net/video/rwUdwUMMytI/видео.html
Use throttle_limit_percent>9000 to go really fast
Yoshitake Mizuno says: !SC-UP , use this to work around the 3rd low position affecting the throttle in a unwanted way.
You can use Sitcks commands too, left stick to left bottom and right stick left middle is profile 1 I think
when you have to do terminal commands, can you type /paste them into the description so we can copy/paste ?
What's solution for this

I was wondering if you could make an updated video using taranis qx7, because when I tried to follow and adapt this step by step I found out that the interface of the Mixer page is very different
Thanks for your excelent job 🙂👍
The man has spoken
Josh, You should really take a look at "project Mockingbird" for the whoops!
I set up my tinyhawk with it last night and it is amazing how it feels, You can have your quad setup for "inside flying" and (acro outside flying) I cant tell you how much I recommend trying it out! Then maybe a video to help out some others make there whoops amazing.
Just scrolling through the comments and I see this. Thanks man, I will check it out 😎
Mark Thompson didn’t he write a few pages of that?
FML needed this big time 😂 thanx 👍
WOW ! Great video Josh
Really helpful...as usual!
Hi JB... Congratulations again for u excelent work... I have the opose case... I need raise 75 % to fly 1 mt up. How i can do to scale for get more response.... Thank in advance
Reminds me of the preset modes on cheapo RTF’s we all started on
Can't do it.
So darn useful! Exactly What I needed. Thank you
Make sure to read the first comment pinned to the top of the comments section here.
Seems like a found the video :) as I just commented in the previous older video where you did this on the remote... thanks :)
I guess this is possible with dji goggles and controller :)
I missed the end of this the first 3 times I watched it loollllolo
Thank for this video. So if I set to throttle to a lesser limit ( say 70% ) , then I guess that would give more flight time , right ?
I limit on my x9d with the potentiometer, 100-90-80 (full-center-min) for my FS builds. 100-85-70 on my racers. Audible call out as well :)
Do you think it’s possible to assign the throttle weight and offset to a potentiometer?
Thanks Joshua!!
for spektum on the tx in control setep you can just turn down the throttle down to to 75
Joshua is use the curve adjustment on the throttle stick.
Thanks a lot dude, you're just like a bottle of wine you get better with age
theres a sight issue with the way youve assigned switches, if you go to 3rd position o switch youll loose cotrol of throtte. i found this out on a plane seting up duall rates ad accidentally switched to 3rd position eded up with no aileron or elevator control.
i added a third line copy set to the 3rd position, there is a way to do it with just 2 lies on a 3 position switch
Thank you sir....cant wait to try
Absolutely fascinating!
nice..... Jerry Seinfeld good one jb
Ahha, I did learn something today! Thanks Joshua
hi, joshua , im using a mobula 7 fc, on flysky and when i throttle lil be up and motors spin for a half of second and stops?? whats wrong with it? thanks for your help
*** FIXED ,. I JUST REVERSE THE MOTORS ON BETA FLIGHT PROGRAM , AND MY NEW EACHINE TRASHCAN WITH THE MOBULA 7 FC IS ON THE AIR NOW,. THANKS FOLKS
love this trick
