Thank you so much for your helpful videos for we ostomy folks I have had an an ostomy for several years. I have had to basically learn by trial and error. I’ve just got by with trying to think about how to best live with it. I’m finally accepting this is going to be a part of the rest of my life. You have taught me that I don’t have to be a victim of my condition but I can actually live well by taking care of my ostomy. I’ve had so many infections, leaks and frustrations. I’m so appreciative of you. Would love to meet to someday. Blessings from Rich Springfield Missouri
I loved that he showed all of the contents in his travel bag.I have used 4quart trash bags for my waste.I have even used baby wipes for cleaning my stoma when i change my appliance.Just make sure that i dont use the ones with lanolin, stops with the wafer from sealing properly .
I wish a guide like this was standard when teaching new patients who get Ostomies. I was given the most bare minimum training and knowledge after my surgery and it just blew my mind that I can go out to youtube or reddit and get better knowledge on how I should be prepared to work with my colostomy like this video than from medical professionals.
Unfortunately, much of the best information is either learned through experience or from someone else's learned experience. As much as I love the work that our healthcare professionals do, it's difficult for them to provide practical information that patients need, especially when the information is often nuanced. I'm glad you found other resources to help!
Wow, that's so much stuff! All I keep in mine is a wafer, pouch, Eakin ring, adhesive remover, scissors, pen and the stoma size tracer. I guess I should give my emergency bag more thought.
Anna Dee Yes, you can certainly minimize this kit, but I feel this one is quite complete if you have a real mess on your hands and require the "extras" like the water, gauze, ziplock bags, etc. =) Here's a way to find out how good your kit is: do an appliance change some place you don't have access to all your usual supplies, like in your bedroom. You'll learn quickly which items you're lacking.
@@VeganOstomy WOW!!That's a super suggestion, Eric... My husband is a nubbie, so I've been doing lots of colosomy research.. I find your videos very informative & reassuring... Thank you.
Great video. I use a small black travel bag, less noticeable.. Great for travel. sits in my car & drops into my day pack for hiking. Added paper toilet seat covers, for public restrooms. I have very small packets of baby wipes, Resealable. Plus a small towel. My barrier burst on I-80 at 75 mph. Shoved the towel against the leak & made it home. Keep 2 appliances, as my "little buddy"(kudos to Alan Hale Jr) can sent a SPURT w/o warning(while changing during the day). It's -11 outside, so I will put my EDC in a cooler bag, PRONTO! Thanks for the tip.
Like your ‘on the go’ kit a lot! At the beginning, I’d carry lots of supplies, however, in time I simplified it. Now, I carry one appliance with the wafer cut to size already, convex wafer and pouch attached, lots of wipes, hand disinfectant, small trash bag, the ring I place around the stoma and that’s pretty much it (I think!). Thank you for your informative videos!
My current 2019 kit is way smaller and has fewer supplies now, but I rarely (never) use it since I've found an appliance and have the experience to know when to anticipate problems. I've been wanting to make a new video to show this trimmed down kit, but haven't had the time!
Do you mind sharing what appliance you currently use? I’ve been using Coloplast Mio with the convex wafer, two piece. I also wear the belt. I tried this version in the one piece and I really like it as well. My next order will be for the one piece appliance. How do you feel about the pouches with built in filter? I’m not a fan, bc I can’t clean it well enough!
Hollister 2pc with ceraplus. These have been working great for a very long time. No leaks that I can remember and wear times of 5,6 and 7 days are normal.
@@VeganOstomy oops pushed down arrow by mistake. Your blogs have been so helpful and informative for me in my 6 month iliostomy journey. Have been so frustrated with matter not falling to bottom of pouch. One lady even suggested using Pam Spray prior to attaching single wafer & that has helped some. Just too much stool was remaining around stoma. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Nancy
Hi Nancy, perhaps my video on "pancaking" will give you some ideas on how to help with that problem: ruclips.net/video/3EIC4zrUups/видео.html There's also an article linked on that video that will give you even more tips. Good luck!
Hi, Eric! Would you mind telling me which EDC bag you have? I ordered some for Steve to keep in each of his farm vehicles (We have an eighteen-hundred hive honey farm.), but they seem much smaller than the one you have. They're large enough to hold both his colostomy and urostomy supplies, but only the basics. I'd like to make it as convenient as possible for him when he's physically able to get back to work because he's having a little difficulty with all the changes that have hit him at one time. I STUDY your videos! lol! Thank you so much!!!
I don't tend to carry one at the moment as I like my new found freedom & don't want to jinx it by carrying a kit just in case, if that makes sense.. So I just dot them around my usual haunts! However I think I'd take one if I went for a day trip to another city by train (without their cars)..
You'll be cursing your superstitions when you have your first public leak! LOL I think most of us get comfortable with the idea of not carrying an emergency kit with us if we've had no problems for a while. Ostomates who have constant bad luck with their appliance should probably carry one when they leave the house.
Hi Eric. I just found your videos recently. This one had so many great tips. My EDC bag is one that came in my convatech welcome kit. I use closed end pouches, and my office is an hour away. So, I have enough pouches for a week and two backup wafers which I precut. I also carry flushable wipes, bags for pouch changes, adhesive remover wipes, and a small spray bottle of M9 odor spray. I carry this bag everyday to work and when I'll be away from home for a long period of time. I love to hike and bicycle. I'm wondering if anyone has good tips for those activities where restrooms are scarce.
+Rebecca Cauldwell You sound prepared! There are options when you're out hiking or cycling, but I'd say it depends on how long you'll be gone for, and how far you are from a toilet. There's a website called Ostomy Outdoors which gives a lot of great advice on everything outdoors! Give that a look :)
This is a great bag for carrying supplies. Which size bag is featured in your video. The link shows different sizes. I like the size in your video. BTW, why are there 2 links to the same bag?
My daughter is going to school in September so we are looking to make a kit for the Educational Assistant and Nurse. She is 4 years old and has an Ileostomy. Currently looking to purchase that pouch in Canada.
Yeah, that's a good price! I've reviewed the Stealth Belt, but haven't made a video review: www.veganostomy.ca/stealth-belt-review/ I did a video review on a comparable product (which I've been wearing now for many months): www.veganostomy.ca/comfortbelt-review/ Hope you and your daughter are doing well!
+dronelayer Glad you found it! I still use the Condor T&T bag in most circumstances, but I do keep it in the cooler pack if I feel that I'm going to leave it in the car.
+Vegan Ostomy, I may order a couple of the larger bags but the smaller ones do hold a lot. Steve has room for all supplies for both ostomies (including scissors), some wipes in a zip loc bag plus a couple of the opaque "throw away" bags. He'd never use the mirror so having a place to set it would be unnecessary. He has always kept a change of clothes in his vehicles because beekeeping can be hot, messy work so we have that covered. Now we just need to get him well and healed and stronger! He's had a really hard road (recurring prostate cancer, every complication imaginable and four surgeries in less than a month) and he may not be through it yet... we find out his new, post-prostetectomy PSA tomorrow. Your Vlogs have made what seemed like an insurmountable situation suddenly manageable. Can't thank you enough!
My daily carry has been significantly trimmed down over the years, since I use a fairly minimalist appliance now (no extras other than the bag/wafer). I may still do an update in the future 👍
For air travel, I will pack my supplies up in a TSA compliant way, but it also depends on what's being taken. Some people may not even need scissors with precut wafers, although the scissors I use are 100% compliant and have never been a problem.
@@VeganOstomy I am going to be getting the same bag and pretty much will use the same setup as you. I really do appreciate all the videos you've made and the huge contribution you make to everyone who finds your work. I wish you a wonderful day. ☺
Do you keep several kits "just in case" or do it find it's more convenient then taking a single kit out with you? The tattoo is a Tibetan Buddhist mantra. www.dharma-haven.org/tibetan/chen-re-zig.htm
Perfect. There's a company out of BC that can send you samples of their pouch liners: www.colomajic.com/ Keep in mind that these are liners you put into your bag, not flushable bags (I think they are only available in the UK). I'm not aware of any flushable bags/appliances available in North America.
It should be! However, you will find that using an adhesive remover product will help tremendously! This video will explain more about it: ruclips.net/video/ooq7-PC2iVs/видео.html If you are wearing your appliance for less than 3 days then it will be more difficult to remove because the adhesives are still at their strongest.
Vegan Ostomy I do have that it's only been a month since I had it done I'm always changing my barrier cuz I leak urine so everytime I change it the sticky part sticks to my skin hard I have a difficult time taking it off so I tried a warm towel to kindve wet it so it won't be so hard to take it off I'm usually changing twice a day
Ok, so it seems that you have to stop those leaks so you can get longer wear time. Also, some barriers are easier to come off than others (i.e. they are made to be removed daily). Try to avoid "extended wear" wafers as those are meant to be worn for many days at a time. The warm towel is probably working against you, because the warmth will cause the adhesive to stick even more! Try other adhesive remover products as you may find that some work better than others. Good luck!
