I’m a little different than you, as I have a lot of other medical issues beyond just an ostomy. I’ve been a paraplegic since childhood, had cancer, have severe scoliosis, had osteomyelitis, sepsis, scar tissue, among other things. I had an emergency ostomy this fall, and I have to say that it has been a very easy adjustment for me. My life is great, I have a great career, have a great husband, got pregnant and had twins, and so much more. I guess what I’m saying is that I don’t really think about my ostomy much at all, so I understand you when you say that you don’t have much more to say about living with an ostomy. I also agree about have not having any elective surgery; I’ve had probably 30+ surgeries with general anesthesia, and every time carries risk. Do what’s best for you, as you are the only one who can judge what’s an acceptable risk for you.
Living with an ostomy not all that much different than normal life; just requires a little more equipment and planning. There’s so much information on the web already that I feel like everything you can possibly want to know about life with an ostomy is already out there and accessible to people. Right after my ostomy, I joined a support group based on my ostomy nurse’s suggestion, but I didn’t find it particularly helpful - to me personally. They obviously help lots of other people, and I’m not disparaging them at all, but I didn’t feel a need to connect with other people who poop the same way I do. It’s just not that important to my life and my identity. Very few people even know I have an ostomy, simply because it doesn’t come up in casual conversation.
So thanks for information you’ve provided to so many many people, but I totally understand why you might have ostomy writer’s block. Stay well. Oh, I’m a vegetarian too, been one for 25 years. It’s a very positive lifestyle and you can absolutely thrive on a plant-based diet with an ileostomy or colostomy.

I am 72. Have had Crohns since 16. Have always avoided colostomy/ileostomy surgery. After third and last bowel resection and gall bladder removal 5 years ago life has been difficult. I recently decided to have an ileostomy. In my research I started watching your videos as well as others. Your experiences, thoughts and attitude have brought me a lot of help in making my decision to go forward with the surgery with a lot, lot less trepidation. Thank you for sharing your experiences. Please keep doing your videos if you can. You have brought great help to many people. Thank you very much.

So glad I stayed subscribed and received the notification of your return to You Tube!
Thanks for the update on your J-Pouch and the abdominal complications resulting from your surgery. I vividly remember how courageously you coped with your Jackson-Pratt drain. Sorry to hear that the cyst is a chronic issue. IBD is definitely the gift that keeps on giving!
Your hair looks fabulous so you must be doing something right with nutrition but I do Iook forward to a video on your upcoming experience with the dietician.
Perhaps you could take us rock-climbing in a future video. I'd also be interested in a chat video about how your own personal health challenges may have affected your career choice as well as your approach to your clients.

That would be a great topic! I had an emergency ileostomy-no prior issues. I was used to running and being really active and ever since there’s so much pain involved with exercise. I’m so out of shape now, esp in the abdominal area, and don’t know how to overcome this aspect of my life.

@@jeanneryan3662 I had the same experience as you, an emergency ileostomy. Even though that was years ago I still haven't regained my abdominal strength, mainly because I lost my motivation to work out.
Stick with it! Slowly you're able to do things you used to even if you have to start many steps back and the pain reduces. Keep motivated, hope you feel more like yourself again soon x

Just wanted to say hi and ask a few questions! Maybe you could do a video on it, but what does a day in your life look like now? Also, how do you get all of your supplies and keep up with them?

    • @tootsiedawn2016
      @tootsiedawn2016 4 года назад +1

I can help with part of your questions.
Ask your ostomy nurse about where to get your supplies. I keep mine in a dresser drawer and I keep a duffle bag with supplies in it for trips or if I'm going to a friend's house for a day or for a while. I do that because sometimes my wafer will come loose. It's easier to fix if I have my supplies on hand. That way I don't have to try to go home with poop coming out and getting everywhere.
I hope I helped you. I've had my ileostomy since November 19th, 1997. So, I've learned A LOT. I don't mind helping others. I had to learn without help. So I know what it's like to need help with nowhere to turn .

If you have an ileostomy, filters ARE NOT a good idea. Mainly because with, ileostomies, there aren't solid poop. It's mainly liquid. The liquid can and will come out through that
filter. I know that from personal experience 😉

Hi hun, great video by the way. My name is Mary, I had my ileostomy Oct. 17th 2017. Reason for me was in 1980/81 I was stabbed from the neck down. So years after the complications kicked in. Pains, bowel obstructions, then the kicker was when I was only having bowel movements twice a month. So I located a good surgeon (I thought) (no, I shouldn’t say that) then after one surgery, I had issues, surgery again. I had an infection also I was put on “life food” and 2 of the strongest antibodies there is. That surgery had me in the hospital over a month.
Anyway, I’m curious, do you gain weight, or are you where you want to be? I STILL don’t know what I can/should eat! I need to see someone myself. I’m also tired all the time...Some of when I’m texting you, I could close my eyes and fall asleep. I hate this!! Anyway, one of my biggest concerns is, when I’m old, say in my late 70 on...will I be able to get up like I do now and go potty, change my bag, etc. scares me like crazy! What if I’m with bad arthritis or something...I’ve made up all these scenarios in my mind..lol That doesn’t help matters. Lol
Ive had 12 surgeries now since 2017. I’m so done! My belly has been through the ringer! Oh, speaking of belly...I see all you all with flat stomachs...where did mine go?!!!!!
What I would do for a flat stomach!! Oh yea, I checked that out too..when I had my last surgery, I also had a consultation with a plastic surgeon, he said if he was to help me, I would have to have a reversal. I told him that wouldn’t happen unfortunately. Anywho, great to see your doing well, and you look great! It’s crazy how fast the years have gone by, isn’t it?!! Take care, and keep the video’s coming!
I’m curious, have you always used Hollister? I love the Coloplast bags and wafers!! If you still have the hold towards the bottom of your stoma, this would be perfect. The wafers are a whole other kind of love, as in the way they fit! I can’t wear them because I got a rash. Allergic I sapose. :( Take Care!

Hi Laura, I am a newbie, and guess going through all the trials you have been through, but because of the COVID-19 problem and the lockdown, am not getting much support at the moment. I am struggling with cutting the wafer for an irregular shape ileostomy, but am feeling blah physically and mentally, waking up every night to empty. Do you have this problem?
Have you checked out Hannah Witton's channel, she has an ileostomy and she goes into the J-pouch and child bearing issues, which might help you figure out what you want to do.
As for me, HELP! The ilium is supposed not have sensory nerve endings, but it is often sore when emptying, what am I doing wrong? How do I manage clothing, nothing seems to work.

You can search for veganostomy, you'll be directed to a website where you can ask questions and take a look at past threads.

To everyone reading this please turn to Jesus He loves you and wants to save you, He is the God of miracles The bible tells us in Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved, I seen God do amazing things in my life and in the life's of people I know, He can do the same for you, In your darkest hour call on Him, God saved someone I love from an illness leading to death, There is nothing impossible to God, Its as simple as asking Jesus into your heart to be your personal Lord and Saviour, Jesus will answer you, I know this because it happened to me when I called out to God
