Always loved seeing 'Fridays' taped back when (K)ABC studios were still in almost a residential area in Los Feliz. ANd the bands, inc. DEVO always played LOUD!
Twist away the gates of steel Unlock the secret voice Give in to ancient noise Take a chance a brand new dance Twist away the gates of steel [Chorus] Twist away Now twist and shout The earth it moves too slow But the earth is all we know We pay to play the human way Twist away the gates of steel A man is real Not made of steel [Refrain] But the earth is all we know We pay to play the human way Twist away the gates of steel [Verse 2] The beginning was the end Of everything now The ape regards his tail He's stuck on it Repeats until he fails Half a goon and half a god A man's not made of steel [Chorus] Twist away Now twist and shout The earth it moves too slow But the earth is all we know We pay to play the human way Twist away the gates of steel [Outro] A man is real that's how he feels
If you always thought Devo was just a funny band with silly videos, well surprise, actually they were as powerful as any classic rock band, and a hell of a lot tighter (and louder) live than virtually anybody because they were not into drugs. TURN IT UP!
What the hell are you talking about? They did lots of drugs, HARD DRUGS, like lsd, especially back in the 60s and 70s. Also they had many terrible live performances, albeit mostly because of technical difficulties but you obviously don't know that much about devo.
David Rose, YOU obviously don't know that much about DEVO. Might want to check your facts about DEVO doing "LOTS OF HARD DRUGS". Dude...seriously. They were great live then and they are great live today. DEVO has been pioneers in many ways such as music videos and sync'd backing videos just to name a coupl
Janice Kuwahara PLEASE SHUT THE FUCK UP They have admitted to drug use in several interviews, Bob mothersbaugh claimed to have finished taking an lsd tab before performing one of their first concerts at the uni of ohio. Honestly though, who gives a shit? Don't bother me again with your assumptions.
You are right. Please forgive my error. I sincerely apologize. I'm sorry to have made you so angry. I don't understand why you have so much hate towards me but I suppose I deserve to be told off in that unkind language. PLease forgive me. I will not make a stupid "assumption" like that ever again. Thank you for setting me straight .
I saw them in 1982 at Knott's Berry Farm if you can believe that. Spud Collars. Got one. Got it signed by all of them. Then lost it. I'm 54 now and pissed that I don't have it any longer. Super tight and powerful band.
Gut Feeling? ,,,Bro you need to explore earlier songs that are more punk than the last 40 seconds of Gut Feeling like Fountain of Filth, Social Fools or Penetration of the Centerfold.
TheTestingGrounds for an album? No. It's basically a rework of earlier songs that are raw however, the mixing sucks and it is not as consistent as their debut, FOC, and even NT.
You couldn't get a razor blade in there, that's how tight they were. They were solid PK in the 70's I love the 1st four albums. This one is good too, but you could see the change in musical style at this point.
May I sugges tthis - The Devo Corporate Anthem ruclips.net/video/vsXcmkVUMDM/видео.html You can start the day asa Spud-Boy and return home from your corporate work as a New Traditionalist. Devo - Out.
R.I.P. Bob 2. i loved this show. Andy Kaufman is the devil for trashing it. not really. I saw it on its first run. Classic. I think the Cars played that evening
I saw DEVO on this tour at the Calderone Concert Hall, Long Island, NY. For the encores, those light boxes were moved to the floor, and then when they played, they *ran in place* on top of them so that they were illuminated from below. Yes, it was impressive.
a little rock fable. turin, italy, more or less 1980. devo announced to play in town. great excitement. i go to venue, we queue outside. we could hear rehearsals. gates of steel! and then gig got cancelled..... FUUUUUU..........K. never seen them live.
This is like metal Devo. Great actual live TV performance which in itself is hard to pull off. Fridays was a great show - so much better than SNL at the time.
Long long time Devo fan here. The thing to me is, these guys weren't "rock stars" in the traditional sense; they dressed kind of silly on stage; and the whole 'devolution' narrative was, well, ... But strip all that away and what's left? Kickass mind-melting, earworming all day music....like this one.
Only came across this song by chance but automatically got the feeling i did 40 odd years ago when i first heard it on a UK radio station, amazing song that is timeless.
Wow it just keeps getting better the deeper I go in this exploration of all that was Devo
its a journey well worth taking they were tight as hell and rocked..
That's exactly how I feel! They were amazing!
they came and didn't stick around long enough, now they're back.

"Oh That ALAN !"
I think gary numan took some expressions from devo.
what TV show was this live on?
DEVO at it's very very best.
I agree.
I would have never expected to see ya here, love your Mad Bomber video from way back when!
We're now in the middle of 2021 and I have been following these guys since 1977. I never tire of their wonderful music, We Are Devo!
I basically had a musical epiphany when I first heard Jocko Homo.
NOTHING I had ever heard compared. Great times.
Wait, Are We Not Men?
R.I.P. Alan and Bob
They are with "Bob" Dobbs now.
One of the greatest rock and roll songs ever, period.
I totally agree
I remember hearing DEVO for the first time in High School in 1978 and STILL listen to them to this day. DEVO will ALSO live in Infamy.
Same!
Same same
My favorite devo song always wanted a metal band to cover this song
Oh Alan❤️ Devo’s best drummer.
Yeah. DEVO is secretly the best band ever.
lol Alan is secretly the best drummer ever
The "other" Beatles.
Always loved seeing 'Fridays' taped back when (K)ABC studios were still in almost a residential area in Los Feliz. ANd the bands, inc. DEVO always played LOUD!
Twist away the gates of steel
Unlock the secret voice
Give in to ancient noise
Take a chance a brand new dance
Twist away the gates of steel
[Chorus]
Twist away
Now twist and shout
The earth it moves too slow
But the earth is all we know
We pay to play the human way
Twist away the gates of steel
A man is real
Not made of steel
[Refrain]
But the earth is all we know
We pay to play the human way
Twist away the gates of steel
[Verse 2]
The beginning was the end
Of everything now
The ape regards his tail
He's stuck on it
Repeats until he fails
Half a goon and half a god
A man's not made of steel
[Chorus]
Twist away
Now twist and shout
The earth it moves too slow
But the earth is all we know
We pay to play the human way
Twist away the gates of steel
[Outro]
A man is real that's how he feels
So many thanks for the lyrics, 🥰 for them !
One of the most original and greatest American rock and roll bands there ever was. There'll never be a band like Devo again.
DEVO was calling out the idiots in the world before we had Dancing With The Stars and The Bachelor to reveal them.
A man is real, not made of steel
Simply a kick-ass rock and roll tune. Goosebumps every time.
If you always thought Devo was just a funny band with silly videos, well surprise, actually they were as powerful as any classic rock band, and a hell of a lot tighter (and louder) live than virtually anybody because they were not into drugs.

Bob 1 is totally coked out here. He sold the blue "spud guitar" for coke right around this time. Look it up!
I taped that on my VCR in 1980, watched it over 5000x when I was a kid.
tighter than the album!....height of their powers :-) 'half goon and half a god'
This is the best version
Best line in the song. I had that stenciled in spray paint on the back of one of my jackets back in the early 80's
Awesome beats anything made today!!!
DEVO was my first record buy; i'am born 1965;
The Spud Boys are presented here twice because you'd play it again anyway. ;)
One of the tightest bands ever.......no one rocked as hard as Devo......or used synths better
I saw them in 1982 at Knott's Berry Farm if you can believe that. Spud Collars. Got one. Got it signed by all of them. Then lost it. I'm 54 now and pissed that I don't have it any longer. Super tight and powerful band.
Maybe their best punk song. Great chords.
GUT FEELING is their best PUNK song
Gut Feeling? ,,,Bro you need to explore earlier songs that are more punk than the last 40 seconds of Gut Feeling like Fountain of Filth, Social Fools or Penetration of the Centerfold.
That's obviously a very subjective question regarding songs. However I think Duty Now for the Future is certainly the best album.
TheTestingGrounds hkrro
TheTestingGrounds for an album? No. It's basically a rework of earlier songs that are raw however, the mixing sucks and it is not as consistent as their debut, FOC, and even NT.
A man is real not made of steel
Speaking of making "America Great Again"...
They had some truly beautiful anthems and this is one of them
Best consistent live band of all time
Like Shonen Knife?
Devo holds a special place in time for me coming up. What phenomenal songs they wrote. Better days...
Cheers P[>
What a great band.
That was PUNK......................................i love DEVO!!!!
Just amazing video, thanks for sharing, I still in love with divo, greetings from Chile 2021... DIVO god level
I'm not aware of any other appearances of those white with black trim DEVO outfits.
Alan Myers!!!!!!!!!
I thought they were just kidding around until I saw them live in Norman, Oklahoma back in 1981, and they were NOT kidding around!
You couldn't get a razor blade in there, that's how tight they were. They were solid PK in the 70's I love the 1st four albums. This one is good too, but you could see the change in musical style at this point.
It's 2022 I start my morning everyday with this song when I prepare to open muy business. It just gives me Energy.
Same here. Their best tune. Rock and roll hall of fame song. Ty
May I sugges tthis - The Devo Corporate Anthem ruclips.net/video/vsXcmkVUMDM/видео.html You can start the day asa Spud-Boy and return home from your corporate work as a New Traditionalist. Devo - Out.
I saw this when it originally aired of Friday's TV show back in 1980!
1:17
Not sure who's in charge, but that blue Iceman is Boss.
🤘😎🎸💯🔥🎶😜
This tour was my first gig. I was 15. Brilliant!
The message still more than ever real.
you know it
I love the power chords in all Devos music.
I saw them in 78,
DEVO , now more than ever.
Great example of the fact that Devo was a guitar rock band. A fierce one at that.
This song has been struck in my head for days.
Guess it so good the guy posted it twice. This song could be on a tape loop for me when driving in L.A. Devolving as we speak!
Loved Friday's! So much good music there back in the day.
Funnily, we are finally De-Evolving. Was this the group that foretold the future?
That song kicks ass fuck how good were DEVO !
very good, and no one really gave any credit....
Another group wsy before there time that crowd in that audience have no clue what they are watching, pure genius
I remember hearing this song on Dick Clark's American Bandstand
AWESOME Song!
Spectacular. Saw them many many times. Are we not men ?
we are Devo.
Did these guys EVER make a bad song? Never even heard this one and it's great. They can only make hits.
R.I.P. Bob 2. i loved this show. Andy Kaufman is the devil for trashing it. not really. I saw it on its first run. Classic. I think the Cars played that evening
Actually Andy was perfect for Fridays. He was too "meta" for SNL, even back then.
ten out of ten
Glad you like it, this was from my VCR recorded live and I watched it 5,000,000 X when I was a KID
11
I saw the first SNL performance and was hooked. Found the first album the next day at RS. Been a fan for ever.
I saw DEVO on this tour at the Calderone Concert Hall, Long Island, NY. For the encores, those light boxes were moved to the floor, and then when they played, they *ran in place* on top of them so that they were illuminated from below. Yes, it was impressive.
It's rare for Devo to delve into the old Kabbalah, but this shows their depth of knowledge of de-evolution.
Mark Mothersbaugh = Genious !!!!
Those thrown Devo helmets are out there somewhere...
those power chords
yeh- kinda like the clash of the era yeh!
Devo predictors of the future, twice.
Imagine being one of them folks who caught those helmets. I wonder if they still have them🤔
twist away the gates of steel!
Half a goon and half a God. Yep.
words have more meaning now! WE ARE DEVO!!!!
I never tire of watching this video.
Man..Awsome band!! Know me n my memories!...Great song!! My skateboard days.
Mark is a fucking genius!
My favorite DEVO song of all time.
And this was the first time I heard it back in High School during the last century.
Suck on this Whip It!
ARE WE NOT MEN? WE ARE DEVO !
I'm going to hell because I have never seen them live. Or am I already in hell?
Rudy.. / I saw them twice..two different
years at Univ. of Colorado, Boulder.
...but WE are both in Hell. /\ as Devo
predicted. !#
Love the content but your video has an annoying buzz throughout the video ?
If you can hear that you might be the Batman
a little rock fable. turin, italy, more or less 1980. devo announced to play in town. great excitement. i go to venue, we queue outside. we could hear rehearsals. gates of steel! and then gig got cancelled..... FUUUUUU..........K. never seen them live.
That's horrible
yes indeed. must have had either sound or promoter issues. but hey high class problems!
This is like metal Devo. Great actual live TV performance which in itself is hard to pull off. Fridays was a great show - so much better than SNL at the time.
The best times
that's "warren" from the andy griffth show doing the mc work. huh, yeah, huh, yeah. YEAH!
Can't stand "Warren" eps of AGS... I think Andy was ready to find Barneys one bullet
Yes. !!
All that and they rock too!
I can relate to "the object moves to slow" and "repeat until fails" having worked in a factory for 33yrs.
Do you want to break the internet? Because this is how you break the internet.
I think those guys pumped my gas and wiped my windshield back in the day.
Half a goon and half a a God. Which half?
Devolution is real!
DEVO is the definition of punk. Don't think Ramones et all had any pop elements? DEVO Could just produce a better catalogue.
SPUDS!!!! Get on your computer and vote DEVO for RRHOF. DUTY NOW!!!!
Could just be the best song they ever recorded.
Oh the memories. This was really good.
This performance is like a time machine...
The microphone cord coming out of Mark's sleeve makes me laugh every time.
Only came across this song by chance but automatically got the feeling i did 40 odd years ago when i first heard it on a UK radio station, amazing song that is timeless.
COME TO DADDY by APHEX TWIN is based on this riff
Nothing's gonna change my world nothings gonna change my world across the universe
Fucking brilliant 🤘🤘
MT TV ...it was on cable I first seen this band and I didn't know what hit me
Can anyone ID those guitars for me?
not sure but I understand Bob designed his own stuff.
He did, but that is in Ibanez Iceman
Thanks! Great Spanish name, made in Japan?
Yes indeed
Don't remember the song having a ground loop in it. Thanks for the post.
+stereopolice I just saw this comment and was about to reply what a nerd and ass this guy is ...
Tremendo!!!!!!!
Solid all down picking bass......
I'm a huge fan of hard rock Devo fantastic
Best live performance I've seen of this song so far
Are you receiving me?
Pure XTC
