Devo performing Gates Of Steel, live at The Observatory in Los Angeles, exclusively on Moshcam.
David Bowie dubbed them "the band of the future", Brian Eno produced their debut and everyone from Nirvana to Soundgarden and Rage Against The Machine have covered them.
A contagious collision of New Wave punk, arty experimentalism and subversive politics, these music mavericks burst onto the world scene in the late '70s and turned pop music on its head forever with hits like 'Whip It', 'Girl U Want', 'Mongoloid' and 'Beautiful World'.
So when the chance to film these icons in action at The Observatory at Santa Ana, California came up earlier this year, we jumped at it. Needless to say, they didn't disappoint, delivering a spectacle jammed with hits old and new, gloriously oddball antics and their mental mascot, Booji Boy.
"The Mayan calendar was wrong," frontman Jerry Casale told the crowd on the night. "The world is not going to end this year so you're stuck with us for a long time."
We wouldn't have it any other way, Jerry.

The most underrated band ever.
One of the greatest rock and roll songs ever.
i think so too
Yup! It sure is!
Their best song. By far. Live it's the best😊
Yeah, this has always been an incredible banger!
I guess Mark Mothersbaugh wasn't a smoker. His voice sounds pretty much the same as 30 years ago. These guys are tight as hell, and still raise a ruckus.
I was thinking exactly the same. If I close my eyes, I can see a young Mark singing.
he can barely sing in this video, looks badly winded from walking from his keyboard to the front of the stage.
@@carljung9230 nah.
@@carljung9230 haha. He’s 63 here. I’m impressed
@@carljung9230 I’ve used in to see how you go behind the keyboards dude then lining up to sing during a 90 minute gig
Hate to see old bands trying to make a sad and embarrassing return but these guys still got it. WE ARE DEVO
Aww dad, we're ALL DEVO!
These guys never came close to losing it.
They totally predicted the advent of Idiocracy.
Humans in general keep making embarrassing returns as poopie babies. Birth and death and forgetting in-between so they keep making the same mistakes it sucks. Glad we have an information society so these sad Boojie Boys can finally grow up and think. Thanks. ❤
Also, DEVO ❤❤❤❤❤!!

“Half a goon and half a god”. Love that line. Amazing how they are rocking this song hard after so many years.
That line always stuck out to me too. Perfectly summarizes man.
One of the most underrated bands. It's sad that the only song most people know of, is "Whip It".
Yer , but I have a little chuckle to myself cause most people know shit Devo rule
Mark still sings great at that age! Love ya Devo!!
Fantastic performance!
Thanks for watching!
The sound recording is quite impressive and he hasn't lost his voice. Awesome.
Saw them about 3 or 4 years ago in Boston. Loved the show, but really couldn't believe how magnificent and powerful Gates of Steel sounded live. You had to hear it, soundman was really good, too. I was raving about it to friends. The power had a lot to do with the drummer, but all were really good.
who was the drummer ?
@@jerrylehti7230 Josh Freese since 1996.
MINISTRY does a great cover of this as well.
Played with the intensity this song deserves. Outstanding!
saw these guys in concert in Melbourne for a day o the green. Always been a great fan, but until you see them live you dont appreciate how great a ROCK band they are!!!
They blew simple minds off the stage!!
+Colin Deno I saw them at the Auckland Day On The Green, and I agree, they were absolutely amazing! Such a great gig with the Church, Devo and Simple Minds - and I had just seen Morrissey live for the first time the night before! What a weekend!
DEVO ROCKS LIKE THERE IS NO TOMORROW, FANTASTIC
THANK YOU, EXCELLENT LIVE DEVO PERFORMANCE!! I first heard them in 1978 (long b4 MTV even existed kiddies!) I was 12yrs old and wore out my DEVO cassettes after obsessive listening. I love their originality, unique style, 100% commitment to their theatrical presentation, and omg the music and lyrics of DEVO never fail to impress, all instant classics! I just turned 50 and they STILL ROCK!
brilliant!how many bands 35 years later can still rock it the way these guys do? very few....enjoy!

DECENT !!!! how could i not know this song..after all this time !!!!
D E V O. They still put out more than any other band out there. This is what it looks like when the sum of all the parts work.
Devo really are eternal! Long live for them

The onlyvway to listen to DEVO live
I saw Devo at the 2010 San Diego Gay pride Festival in Balboa Park. That was a fantastic show!
Tonight, this my favourite DEVO creation!!
Grandes entre los grandes!!!!
DEVO FUCKING RULES!!!
i love devo
i still like them ...after all these years
Tremendo!!!!!
🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟
Such an underrated band
los escuchaba mucho cuando tenia 14 años y ahora los vuelvo a escuchar 33 años mas tarde y siguen sonando la Raja
They will always be WAY ahead of their time...no matter what time.
%0 años escuchandolos aun tiene la fuerza de los inicios .... lucha y fuerza para el cambio.. siempre hacia lo mejor....!!!
I saw DEVO four times from 2012 to 2014. I have seen so many shows from Radiohead, Soundgarden to Iron Maiden and DEVO always gives a rocking show! They are all classically trained musicians and give a flawless performance without the filler crap between songs. During an early 1980s interview on Letterman Mark and Jerry discussed how they don't interact with the audience much and introduce songs with dragged-out intros like, "This next song is about a girl I met in Latrobe, Pennsylvania". Letterman asked why not? Mark, jumped in, "They would resent us."
The drummer is pounding the fu#k out of the skins as the singer twists away the gates of steel !!!!!
Sounds great.
We are DEVO!
Holy shit this is too good!!
"Twist away those gates of steel" !!!!!!
Wow The Best From The Heart ! No Fucking Around Kicking Ass In What They Do ! I Love That Song Done Right !
Absolutely love this band!
They are sounding as good or even better than they early days.
Sends a shiver down my spine!
One of their best songs!!!
Big DEVO fan! Always loved this song!
Doing it for 40+ years, still doing it!
I so miss the days before Ritalin rock. Bands like DEVO just move me to a higher plane. When these bands fade away there'll be little left except for the videos. Thanks for the upload.
Grande DEVO!!
Still got it! Pure joy!
When I was a kid I first heard this and I was blown away all my kids records trash I was a student boy for life

All hail devo !
Simplesmente espetacular!
Sounding Incredible....awesome!!
Awesome ¡! DEVO 👏👏👏👏🙆
I forgot they played the Observatory. This is so great !
this is an anthem when I first heard it 1980 I was 11 and I found musically biss
I've always loved this song from when I first bought Freedom of Choice back in the early 80's.
Still boys. Ever green.
Love this song! This was their best one in my opinion! I bet if it got some air time today it would take off!
Had i known #D #E #V #O was playing the Observatory.... Please come back DEVO. I all of a sudden have a craving for a live bag of DEVO
Just... WoW!
Mark Mothersbaugh a giant in music and the arts. Always draws a nice potato
