I remember getting Vita for this game and enjoyed it for what it was worth. I wish we had gotten a ps4 port of this game as I would have loved to see bluepoints magic and enhancements like they did for the collection.
Fun fact: Nathan's outfit in this game makes an appearance in uncharted 3s mp but that's it.

This was the first Uncharted game I played, I never understood why nobody talked about it, it felt like I was the only one who had ever played it. It was only later that I realized that it was not part of the main series of games, and funny enough what that did was that I don't see Golden Abyss as a downgrade, since thats the prototypical Uncharted experience I had for years, its more like I see the other four titles as upgrades.

I really liked this one, specially for the characters. I had no problems with the gyro controls, in fact, I find it bothersome that the other, bigger, titles don't have them.
And ah, yes, that back light puzzle, I thought it was pretty clever, I did find myself doing this on a train. I used to commute daily so I had found ways to have seat for myself every day and play whatever I was playing in peace. Nothing worse than being on a boss fight and having someone wanting to skim by you in or out of the seat. That and also I don't give an F for what others think. So I enjoyed it.
I still have my vita and my games, I will eventually revisiting it.

I've been subbed to your channel for awhile now and when I'm on RUclips I often have the same thought that I should have commented here months ago but better late than never hopefully! I just can't think of another RUclips channel that's been more impressive with the degree at which you have improved here. You're personality brings your vids levels above most essay-style content out there and really makes these an absolute joy to watch no matter what game you're covering. Some channels are never so lucky to find their voice the way you have and that's no doubt in large part to the discipline and commitment it must have taken for you to put in the work to do so. As they say, "it was ahead of its time". Like it really was. But I think the need to purchase the system separately to perform cool features like in Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time's 'thief vision' was what killed it. It made it seem like some weird accessory instead of a console. Especially when you had to purchase the game two times to use on both your handheld and stationary console instead of having it in one like with PS4->PS5 upgrades.
Switch avoided the double-purchase option and accessory advertising, by literally advertising the product as a mobile console. Not just some unique, gimmick-based handheld.
**Regardless, I'm still bewildered by the fact I can do remote play with my vita on modern games like Spider-Man, Injustice 2, Assassins Creed, and many others with the vita despite its digital store's demise and overall lack of attention.

I'm really surprised you didn't go into more detail about the collectibles. Sure, the tie ins with the card game are lame, but Golden Abyss had a really cool structure where the collectibles were much more involved and puzzle-driven. You would often find parts to a whole set over the course of multiple levels that would piece together and give more detail to the world. The collectibles felt more like little side quests - even if they were never super in-depth, it was nice seeing them be more involved than just pressing triangle on a shiny spot on the ground. While definitely not the best Uncharted game, I think Golden Abyss was pretty cool for what it was. I hope someday we see it released in some form as a downloadable title. (Hopefully without the Vita-specific gimmicks.)

I played a lot on my Vita from 2011 to 2018 because I had to commute to work by train on a daily basis for 1,5-2 hours each day. And when I wasn't sleeping I played on Vita. And during that time I got a ton of platinum trophies for all kinds of games. I tried out dozens of indi-games and found some of my new favorite franchises like Danganronpa, Gravity Rush or Persona, which I wouldn't have tried out if I didn't have a Vita.
And I really hate the argument people bring up all the time, that you can't play triple A games on the go, because mobile games have to be designed around "quick 5-15 minute sessions" or something like that. It doesn't make any sense. Imo, the souls-borne games are "designed around quick sessions" because they save the game with every step. But that doesn't count for artificial reasons.
But the Vita and Switch have a great little feature. It works even the best on Vita because of how instantaneous it is implemented there (much better than on the Switch). It is the sleep mode. You can press the power button short and the screen goes off. And when you press it again, you stand exactly where you were before. Or you can also use the home button to instantly freeze the game in place. It works much better than on any other console I've ever used. There were situations where I looked out the window and noticed that the train had already stopped at my destination and I had to put my vita into my pocket fast and run out the train. And thanks to how fast it is, I never had problems with that.
Golden Abyss was awesome for me. I was already an Uncharted fan and it was the perfect game for me. (but yes, the light-puzzle was BS)

Btw when I first got the Vita in my hands, I had the same issue with the sticks, but after a while I got used to it. So my advice is to give it time, more than a few hours. This is coming from someone with big hands who also plays on a PS4 with a normal controller, and a keyboard and mouse on PC. It gets better with time. Since I play all 3, now I have muscle memory developed for each control type, so when I've been playing on PC or PS4 and I pick up the Vita, I don't notice the sticks being small anymore.

And most Uncharted encounters can be finished entirely in stealth. But good luck making it through the ones in 4.

this is honestly the biggest crime Naughty Dog ever committed...and i stand by that. they could easily redesign Golden Abyss on the PS4 and PS5 or whatever...but they can't be bothered. they wouldn't even have to change the story at all because i have seen GA from beginning to end and it's perfect in terms of chronology with the others...it's set before Drake's Fortune and is actually a prequel to all the other Nathan Drake games for those that don't know. all they need to do is alter the gameplay so it doesn't include motion and Vita mechanics.

this game was going to a part of the Nathen drake collection but it got scraped because Bluepoint could not figure out how to make thing like the holding the paper to the light work on consoles and they probably did not have the time nor money to redo cutscenes outright which is disappointing but understandable.

I do regret it because at the time I wasn't into jrpgs, but now i am and I realized that I missed out on a lot of titles i'll probably like. But it is true that i won't really be dropping the money to get a vita now and sony closing the stores and giving up on handhelds just means I'll probably forever miss out on some titles until emulation is good enough in the future and i pirate the games

Obviously, that’s not the only thing, you know updated graphics etc. but I think most of even the touchscreen stuff could be done using the touchpad on the dual shock four and dual sense.

it's stupidly easy to jailbreak the Vita these days. honestly the only things you'd be shelling out for would be for 1) the console itself, 2) a good SD card and 3) the SD2Vita adapter (optional: the charging dock, a must for the fat model imo). after you mod it you'll have access to everything for free. if you have the spare cash, I'd say go for it.

as some one who played this pretty close to release and who spoke to other people about it (granted it was on forums and game lobbies) the reseption for this game was surp[risingly good with a fair amount of hype for a hoped ps4 port overall i think you did a good job explainig the appeal and falt of the game
but i will say the automatic climbing was much less of a con considering that most of the people i spoke about it back then either didn't notice or didn't bring it up
i personally didn't notice it till my second play through
there was a lot of whining that chase and dante should have been Chloe and Harry from Uncharted 2 mostly cause there was this rumor going around that the game was going to be about how Nate and Chloe meet for the first time
also a lot of the gimmicks such as the swiping and the light usage were excused as launch title syndrome and not particularly intrusive (which personnaly looking back at the game they for the most part weren't) and were justified with the next Uncharted vita will "ignore and/or fix them"
there was a loud group of "hardcore" playuers (couldn't tell you if it was a mojority or a minority since i mostly keep to my corner of the fandom) that hated the game since it "dumbed" down the gunplay with making the shooting easier and making granades irrelevant
personally i loved the game at the time and have fond memories but honestly at the end of the day aside from chase while i'd be sad i don't think i'd mind to much if Goldenm Abyss was stuck on the vita for the rest of time

Furthermore if you stop doing anything because of what people think or verbally express then you have a larger issue at hand you should address first. Life is short. I got a vita just for this game, did sooo much work for it that perhaps I might be over justifying it to myself, but when you ask who this console was for, I think this console and game were made for me.
See this handheld may not have worked for me if it came out now, I barely use my switch for anything other than a distraction when my phone is charging. But back when I got this, it was the most needed thing I have ever had at that point. See I was an only child with parents who weren't together. So on one hand I had the fun dad who had a ps3 with all the Uncharted games, and back at my moms house, I didn't have anything. My mom was the primary custody holder, so I went long periods of time without seeing my dad or the lesser extent my ps3. I therefore could only use my vita to supplement any enjoyment from my playstation that I was usually missing out on. Games like UC Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush, Little Big Planet, Playstation Allstars, etc. was all that I had until I could get back to the real fun on my Ps3.
So in short, while everyone shits on the vita regularly, I used it as an oasis of gaming when I was in a desert of boredom.

So this is technically playable on PSTV, but it's one of the few whitelisted games, meaning you have to have homebrew to get it to run properly as well as get something to remove the HDCP protection. The nice thing with this game is the PS4 controller shows that this game could do well with a PS4 or PS5 port, utilizing the touchpad for any of the parts requiring the touchpad. I would love to see a remake for the game, but at this rate it doesn't seem like it would come to fruition, especially when Bend was worried about being absolved into Naughty Dog when there was talks of another spin-off featuring Sully. In terms of the collectibles, part of the thing that was missed was just how many there were/ Yes, they helped give new cards and stat boosts to those cards for Fight for Fortune, but there were also a massive number of collectibles to find. How many? Around 200... The only gripe with some of the collectibles is some occur right at the end of a chapter and if you accidentally walk into the trigger for the end of the chapter, there's nothing you can do in that moment to rectify it other than go back through chapter select and replay the whole entire chapter. I definitely recommend fans of Uncharted to give the game a play if they're able to get their hands on it or watch a no-commentary playthrough. It may not be the best Uncharted game, but it's still a damn good one.

  • @shahrouh

There's also the Uncharted: Fight for Fortune game on Vita which is even harder to get since there is no physical copy and it's been delisted and for those who own it, they can't play online because online servers were taken down without any semblance or warning from the developers (Bend Studios). I still own the demo miraculously but Bend did everyone real dirty.
