      Very important to note though that none of those are "pure life gain". The life gain is meant to synergize with cards that care about gaining life. Plain life gain that is not part of a combo or anything is generally bad. It needs to be attached to something else to be good.

    White decks in Pauper are using Arashin Cleric as a sideboard card now mostly because, as a 1/3 they block better with all the 1/1s like the Kudoltha Rebirth tokens and such. It only gains one less life.

    My favorite card to benefit from life gain triggers is Karlov of the Ghost Council. He gets 2 +1/+1 counters each time you gain life, starts as a 2/2 for 1 White and 1 Black, and when you have 6 or more +1/+1 counters, you can pay his original casting cost and exile any creature. The fact that you can add a bunch of life gain triggers to his deck so easily means you can either exile any troublesome creatures outright for so little mana, or just stack them up and go for commander damage, makes him one of my favorite commanders to play casually.

    Thinking of life gain as just a way to gain some life discredits the mechanic. It's the cards that interact with gaining life that make it count.
    For instance, at 6 mana, Beacon of Immortality seems like a pricey way to gain a relatively small amount of life, but if you have Tainted Remedy, you can win on the spot. (You target your opponent with it, doubling their life, but they lose that much life instead, leaving them with 0.)

    I hate to say it but weather the storm doesn't in fact deal with cycle storm combo, as that deck uses the"Cycling" mechanic, which doesn't count as casting a spell. However to the cards credit it allows slower green beatdown decks to exist in pauper since has the potential to stop your opponent from chaining burn spells in the format which can sometimes mean that 1 activation can win you the game.

    First, the explore package was heavily played pre-WAR without Bolas' Citadel/Command the Dreadhorde, and arguably was most dominant when RNA released Hydroid Krasis the set before. It was mostly rotation making some Ixalan cards no longer look so embarrassingly weak in comparison to Kaladesh. That said, the explore package still quickly becomes garbage outside of Standard, where there can be 5x or even 10x the number of cards competing for the same deck space, without any additional explore cards to be found.
    This trend extends to over half the list, cards which were basically irrelevant outside of their respective Standards or decade-old Modern formats, and this was the first time my own picks had zero cards in common with the video (despite aggressively cutting cards not run primarily for life gain). Right now, I'd say Blossoming Calm and Shadowspear are the eternal staples that closest to true life gain cards, with maybe Crypt Incursion getting third place, depending on how high you are on Modern mill. All of these lost out to borderline joke cards like Feed the Clan and Authority of the Consuls.

  • @ColeTrainStudio
    @ColeTrainStudio Год назад +2

    Lifegain isn't bad, it's just not a win con (unless you're playing that one card that says you win if you have over 40 life). Lifegain is functionally a counterspell for the damage step. The perfect example of this is Uro (which very much should've been on this list, btw). The thing that pushed it over the top in so many formats is the fact that it both cantrips and gains your three life. And that you can play it twice. So, for a single card you draw two, gain six and get a huge body. And that's if you don't get to attack with it.
    Lifegain being a bad mechanic is just wrong. It's like saying trample or haste is a bad mechanic.

    • @analyticalj8687
      @analyticalj8687 Год назад

      Uro wasn't broken because of lifegain. That's like saying questing beast is broken because it has planeswalker trample.
      Lifegain isn't a true counterspell, it doesnt prevent them from just attacking more, nor does it affect the boardstate. At most, it's a mana tithe.

    • @ColeTrainStudio
      @ColeTrainStudio Год назад

      @@analyticalj8687 good thing I said it was a COMBINATION of lifegain, cantripping, the escape mechanic, and a huge power level on a single card. If you're trying to say that the lifegain on it doesn't matter, then you've never played a format where Uro cancels out the damage from DRC or Delver. Saying its lifegain doesn't matter if like saying ALL OF THE TEXT COMBINED on a questing beast doesn't make it good.
