Top 10 Cards that Could be Broken

  • A lot of the time, cards aren’t all that great by themselves. It often takes a specific combination of cards to make a truly broken strategy. It can often take years for a card to find their partner to allow them to become truly broken, but people will often have their eyes on cards for quite a while before it gets that support. Today, we’re going to go over a bunch of cards that, in the right circumstances, could be incredibly powerful.

    There actually IS a card that breaks Rona and Mox Amber legal in Pioneer: Retraction Helix. AmmiO2 made a whole video on it but I’ll go through it quickly here. It’s an instant for one blue mana that give a creature the ability to tap and bounce a non land permanent until end of turn. So, give that ability to Rona, float a blue (or any color of mana that you have a legendary creature or planeswalker for, Rona herself provides blue) mana from Mox Amber, and then tap Rona to bounce the Amber, Crucially, the Amber can be replayed for free, and Rona will untap since Amber is a legendary spell. You can therefore float another mana, bounce Amber again, and repeat infinitely. From there, you can win with a card like Fae of Wishes grabbing win conditions like Jace Weilder of Mysteries (which can plus 1 to mill some cards and draw a card, be bounced with Rona thanks to Helix, and replayed to use the plus one again and untap Rona since its also a legendary spell, looping with your infinite mana) and eventually win off of Jace’s passive of winning the game when you try to draw with no cards in your library.

    I have a standard Sultai Legends deck on arena, and I can confidently say Rona is an absolute powerhouse even without Mox Amber. Relic of Legends is a mana rock that has the additional benefit of being able to tap legendary creatures for mana. You can tap Rona to the relic to cast a legendary spell to immediately untap Rona, and there are a lot of cheap legends in standard to make it work. Proft's Eidetic Memory is a favorite of mine because it also gives counters from Rona's own ability.

    one other way to use sundial is to activate the effect of sundial in response to a bunch of triggers at the end off the turn that would remove tokens or reanimated creatures from the game (like the upcoming Sliver Gravemother from Commander Masters or Chandra, Flamecaller or similar effects) since the effect would be triggered but because of sundial not resolve those created tokens would stay infinitely

    I suspect that Maskwood Nexus could be broken if there was a way to use multiple creatures that care about different creature types that fit with in a certain theme. For example, Rotlung Reanimator and Bishop of Wings produce tokens when their chosen type dies, If a Card was both and Angel and a cleric, both would trigger. Since the tokens would also be Angels and Clerics, you would have an endless supply of tokens to sacrifice.

Portable hole, vanishing verse, doomskar, showdown of the skalds, and the forgotten realms planeswalkers. Nothing makes someone scoop faster than not letting them play for several turns, then refilling your hand with all the cards to do it again.

  • @Phazonfarmer

    I used to run a deck that featured Defiler of Faith alongside Soul Warden, Kor Skyfisher, and Oketra's Monument:
    - Soul Warden is a 1-mana 1/1 that gives you 1 Life whenever a creature enters the battlefield
    - Kor Skyfisher is a 1W 2/3 that bounces a permanent you control when it enters the battlefield
    - Oketra's Monument is a 3-mana Legendary Artifact that reduces the cost of your White creatures by 1 Generic, and creates a 1/1 Warrior creature whenever you cast a creature spell
    With Monument and Defiler reducing Skyfisher's casting cost to 0, you can cast him for free, get extra creature tokens out of Defiler and Monument, then have him bounce himself and do it all again. And with Soul Warden gaining you Life off of each of those creatures, you actually gain more Life than what you pay for Defiler's effect. In other words, infinite creatures + infinite life.
    The main problem I had with it was, since I was running it Mono-White, I had limited options for things like Card Draw and Removal - plus, any sort of Removal spell would stop the combo dead in its tracks:
    - Removing Soul Warden means I'm no longer gaining Life off those ETB's, which means I have to pay more attention to how much I'm giving to Defiler
    - Removing Monument or Defiler means I have to pay either 1 or W for each casting of Skyfisher, which puts a hard limit on how many times per turn it can be done. Also, I'm no longer generating tokens afterward.

    Sundial of the Infinite is incredibly strong in many red decks that rely on exiled cards, such as decks with Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin as the commander. It can be activated during second main so the end step trigger of the exiled cards never occurs, allowing you to get an effectively unlimited hand size.

    • @gautierlathuiliere6072
      @gautierlathuiliere6072 Год назад

      It depends on the wording. Some effects are worded "exile it at the next end step" while others are "exile it at the end of your turn". I should check Gatherer for that

    • @connorhamilton5707
      @connorhamilton5707 Год назад

      Notably, this only works because of the strange duration Ob has (it's only on this Ob, Riveteers Charm, Unlucky Witness, and Rocco, Street Chef, all cards featuring stuff on the plane of New Capenna). Instead of saying "until the end of your next turn" like other similar effects, he says "until your next end step". Sundial skips all steps up until the cleanup step, which is the second half of the ending phase (end step is the first half). Since the end step never occurred, the duration hasn't met the condition to end yet.
      Just so it's clear, effects with a duration "until end of turn" or a variation of it like "until the end of your next turn", will stop during the cleanup step of the specified turn, so Sundial will not let you extend their duration. It doesn't actually help with most of red's impulse draw, just those four cards from New Capenna and MoM: Aftermath.

      I think the big problem is that it only casts sorcery cards, and a lot of the applicable sorceries that see play are discard effects, very specific removal, cantrips, or X spells, all of which aren't great to be cast mostly randomly or for such a high cost.
      The only place it would really have a home is in Mill strategies, where you can get things like Tasha's Hideous Laughter, Fractured Sanity, and Glimpse the Unthinkable. The problem there is the relatively small number of big mill sorceries to hit.
      The suspend sorceries could also be good hits, but you are often better off just cascading into them since it can be guaranteed and done sooner.

    • @connorhamilton5707
      @connorhamilton5707 Год назад +2

      Pyre has two downsides compared to Vannifar.
      First, it costs two mana to activate. That means to really break it, you need to be able to generate a lot of mana to pay for that cost, and if you have that mana, why not just win with one of the many X spells in the game that can outright kill your opponent. For a little context, Vannifar combos have her get activated over six times in a single turn (often more), so it would cost over 12 mana to get Pyre to do the same thing.
      Second, Pyre's restriction makes it much more difficult to actually grab the proper pieces in the order you need to combo off. These combo cards have a very wide variety of creature types without much, if any, overlap.
      Pyre is much more workable in a "fair" deck looking to use it over multiple turns as a toolbox, helping get what you need when you need it, but that is often too slow for competitive formats. I play it in my Wilhelt zombie commander deck, and it can pull out lords, combo pieces, etc., and can lead to building a solid board over multiple turns with just a Gravecrawler (which can be pulled from the deck using a zombie token).

    • @connorhamilton5707
      @connorhamilton5707 Год назад

      Because new Urabrask is too fair.
      Compare him to Birgi. He costs one more to play, meaning he gets out slower, allowing the opponent more time to build up some pressure or find removal. He only works on casting instants and sorceries, instead of on casting anything. While not as relevant, he also doesn't let you keep the mana across steps and phases, so you have to do everything you want to at one point during the turn, and if that happens to be during your opponents turn they can attempt to move the turn forward to waste your floating mana. Also not very relevant, but duplicate Birgis can be turned into a card advantage engine pretty easily, while duplicate Urabrasks require a heavy investment of resources to turn into a very slow, but upgraded, Past in Flames.
      All these downsides, for a ping to target opponent in addition to the mana generated.

    This is also why, again, these videos must be divided by format.
    Because, for example, one of the formats Sundial is legal in is Commander. But Sundial CAN'T be broken in commander, for a simple reason: Obeka.
    In vintage or any other format Obeka would have the same issue Vannafar had, and despite the upsides would be significantly worse than Sundial. In Commander, however, the fact that it can be the commander (and works with the card you want Sundial for) makes it actually a better option despite being more difficult to cast and easier to remove. So any strategy there would just break Obeka first.

      Dredge, a self-mill mechanic, having decks named after it highlights how valuable the graveyard can be, and on the other end players putting graveyard hate in their sideboards shows how much of a threat it can be.

      @@connorhamilton5707 I started playing when Antiquities is new, and stopped when planeswalkers started coming into the game, I know what that game is. My point is that the current game is almost nothing but graveyard, hand and library manipulation. There's no luck or strategy involved. It's who ever can get their combos together fastest. That's Yu-Gi-Oh playing.

      @@Devoguy Once again, those are not new aspects to the game, and are actually more prominent in formats using older cards.
      Magic is not a solved game (as in, one strategy is so consistent and strong that it outclasses the rest in its format). Luck and strategy/tactics still play a big part in every format. If a format ever does manage to get solved, or seems close to it, then the problem cards get banned to fix that issue. Some newer examples include Lurrus being banned in Vintage (before the Companion change) because using a Black Lotus/LED to cast a creature that lets you cast that Black Lotus/LED again every turn is very strong; and Arcum's Astrolabe being banned in multiple formats for enabling the easy use of four and five color strategies while also being a cantrip and helping snow strategies.
      Given your statement about having stopped when planeswalkers got introduced, I think you need to actually spend more time playing the current game before you can really judge it. I suggest the Pauper format, both for being relatively cheap and because it is often considered Legacy-Lite, having a healthy format supporting all types of play styles from aggro to control/tempo, and from midrange to combo. At the same time, I discourage playing the Commander format, since it not only punishes aggro and encourages combo with the significantly higher life totals and social nature of the format, it also provides extra consistency in the form of your commander, which you seem to not be a fan of.

    Just going to put this here, but Magistrate is a pain in the ass when you're playing Commander.
