I couldn't hide my surprise the first time I saw a job ad that said "must know how to drive manual trans, no automatic restriction on license". Made me feel so much superior over some of the newer drivers coming out of school these days.
My dad drives a Manual 6 wheeler grab DAF. He works a lot in narrow small spaces at sites where he needs to deliver and collect. With the manual he says its much easier to make small adjustments within these tight spaces. He was given a temp truck a while back which had an auto, he said it was beyond irritating as the truck couldn't make these small low speed movements anymore and instead lurched forward almost dangerously. We both agreed that for HGV's that live on the motorway doing 100's of miles, autos are better for many reasons most noticeable fuel economy. But for HGV's working in multidrop especially in small spaces such as construction sites and domestic building sites, manual transmissions give the driver just a little more low speed maneuvering control.
I’d take manual every time. Had a manual Scania. Never had a problem with it. Now have an auto. Constant gearbox failures. And I’ve driven the DAF auto’s, they are shocking.
I had an automatic tipper a while ago and it would never climb a hill that’s near my house when it had a load on and then I got a manual tipper after and it climbed that hill like it was nothing
Manual all day every day, tend to find autos are automatically in the wrong gear especially roundabouts. You just don't have the control and feel in an auto.
One of the biggest problems I find with automatics is not having any control over the clutch when you're manoeuvring in tight spaces even using throttle limiting functions, that fact you have to apply more throttle to get the clutch to engage is situations like that than you used to when driving manuals is a nuisance, I found it much easier manoeuvring a manual in tight spaces. Automatics are great if you're doing lots of motorway driving but they can be more cumbersome when using minor roads.
I now drive an auto. However, i do enjoy the odd drive of a manual while my regular ride is in for mot or service. I just enjoy reminding myself i can still drive a truck properly. Also, although it will never happen but if i was to say become an owner driver, i would go manual as theres less to go wrong. I had an auto off the road for a week once as the gearbox wasn't talking to the engine and nobidy could figure out why, don't have that problem with a manual.
@@secretsquirrel6124 yeah I know but they are still shocking at pulling away from the lights. Embarrassing just how slow they are to get away. I took my 450 cf back into daf twice to try and improve it but with no luck. Awful.
It can be used in manual mode until you take your foot off the gas. If there's a bend or a reason to slow briefly on a hill it'll put you straight back to snail mode , drop you to 12th gear and you lose all your momentum. May as well employ robots to drive if we can't select our own gears to match the road. It'll also pop into neutral randomly when going down hills leading you to run on over the speed limit if you're not entirely focused on the speedo. I'd rather concentrate on what's in front of me. Crap gearbox. Then let's discuss the dangerous emergency braking system which skidded me onto the wrong side of the road last week when the lorry saw an imaginary obstacle second time in a month . A previously brilliant manufacturer is now dire.
For drivers that enjoy the old school style double clutching technique - ZF, Eaton Fuller, Spicer etc. manuals should always be available. Driver preference. That Fuller Twin Splitter (12 speed) was something else.
Thankfully I still drive a 16speed manual daf cf draw bar hook loader Feel so much more in control of the vehicle than in a crappy auto I think personally there a bad idea in a hgv That eco mode is shocking in the daf autos it makes me want to launch the truck into a river its absolute pants !!!! Yeah you're telling me I was doing ome of my drops I pulled across both lanes in order to get in the delivery bay and put it in neutral then it wouldn't go in reverse lol I had to turn it off lock the cab and leave it for a minute Haha needless to say I wasn't overly popular
@@erikdikkers7931 this is true, but some have more issues per day, volvo ishift is one of the better autos, one of the worst is MAN when coming up to around about it panics and cant pick a gear lol

I’m 60 and I’ve driven an old ford d series 7.5 ton to arctic lorries and certainly don’t speak for any other drivers both past and present I’m only speaking from my own opinion. I loved that old clunker and all its problems because it made me more aware of other drivers and road conditions but the fleet mechanic always said when it’s pissing down or you’ve went through a loch of water and you find your brakes are pulling to one side get yer motor onto an empty peace of road and give it some welly and at the same time ride the foot brake and after a few minutes hey prest you’re brakes will dry up
Been a Lorry Driver myself Manual gearboxs by far much better as long as they don't have the SO CALLED CLUTCH SAVER (FUNKING SHIT IDEA ) ON. Reason i think Manual box's are better..Pulling away daft as much as might sound, Braking (using the gearbox carful to slow down so not the get brake fade) , off road i.e mud/snow confuses the hell out of an Autobox. I'm not saying I don't like them but they are nothing like a car gearbox. Sorry but Manual gearbox anyday.
Im driving trucks over 21 years now... its what most drivers that are driving that long are used to... Is manual gearboxes...manual for myself if i got the choice.
Would really love to see a Daf truck or any other European brand with a manual Eaton Fuller Transmission - 13 or 18 speed, yes with the double clutch technique. Autos are very comfortable, good for the new downspeeding transmissions, although for tougher road work and personal, professional enjoyment , three pedals is more rewarding.
Come to the States bub...Manuals still rule the roads because automatics are for steering wheel holders not real drivers...I have an 18 Speed EF in my Kenworth T800.
Automatic transmissions are GARBAGE period. A manual gives you much more control over your truck, better fuel consumption. Automatics never shift correctly, they sniff a hill they downshift. I work construction in the North Maine woods driving another Paccar product a Kenworth T800 with an Eaton Fuller 18 speed hooked to a 625hp Caterpillar C15 engine.
Given the fact is particular truck is meant to go on tough terrain a manual gearbox indeed makes a difference between being stuck in mud , gravel or not. However for regular haulage that would be a hard pass. 6 speed manual would be just as fine. 16-18 .. or 300 speeds ... Obsolete and antiquated
Auto boxes, hmmm. Let me tell you about them. I don’t own a truck. But if I did it would be a manual, a ZF with a splitter and a range change. It would have a single plate clutch too. Roadside autobox repairs? Fat chance
I am an owner and drive ZF16 manual. Next truck will be a problem since new trucks are all automatic. Only Iveco still uses ZF16 but only with the small AT cabine.......😟
@@erikdikkers7931 I do roadside repair on trucks and trailers. I only do easier work these days but I used to replace 3 part clutches, hub bearings, road springs and many other bigger jobs. Since the last 10 years the auto box has been the weapon of choice for the transport managers, who only drive a desk. They only know how to make a phone call and that fixes everything.
