No bass player credit on this song! Is that for real? Only says Brian Jackson keyboard bass (synthesizer) Could be like the classic Stevie Wonder funk bass sound.
While I am glad you have found this and am glad that the Boston Globe has listed it, the song has always been about the brutality of the penal system of the United States. The over-sentencing epidemic that has raged for 60 years across the United States, including and especially the torturous backwater of Louisiana. This song is NOT about race. It is about police and prison brutality. I am glad you have discovered the song. Now go on to discover the other great Gil Scott-Heron's songs. A very troubled, conflicted artist who I have loved from the first day he released his first track.
@@restless94110 Thanks, man. Heavily into GSH. Just got his debut on vinyl, and last year finished his autobiography. Been sharing some of his tunes on social media, too. I teach in the prison system here in my home state and see this up close. And when I get too down, I put on "I Think I'll Call it Morning," as I did yesterday. Be Well, JW
@@jjw12562 Good on you. My favorite has always been "Home is Where the Hatred Is" Several months ago, UK music magazine, Mojo, had a piece on Gil through the eyes of his creative partner who is still alive. Gil was a pioneering artist and I have always loved his delivery and the intelligence of his lyrics.
It would be great to see this song with clips of the Angola 3, Albert Woodfox (who has already served 43 years in solitary confinement, regardless of how many times a judge has ordered his release), and the view now of Angola re-constructed to imprison thousands of (mainly) black men in SHUs as slave labor for the State of Louisiana.
Joy Wilder The song is about the prison, one of the harshest penal institutions in the US, located in one of the harshest states in the Union, and represents the black stain on the penal practices of the United States. The Angloa 3 are but one of the many injustices of such an institution. Gil Scott had it right.

Well, I’m feeling fine
But I could have been doing time
Well, I’m doing fine, thank you
But I could have been pulling time
I know a brother man doing time
And he didn’t commit no crime
So, thank you, I’m doing fine
‘Cause I could have been pulling time
Well
[Verse 2: Gil Scott-Heron]
I’ve been painting a picture of Angola, Louisiana
Pictures of deals in back alleys where politicians often hide
But it’s much more important to me than Angola, Louisiana
Got a lot to do with justice but more with Gary Tyler’s life
I got a letter from his mother, said, “Please, say something to my son!”
Truth is: Angola, Louisiana, you’re the one
[Verse 3: Gil Scott-Heron]
Well, I ain’t never been nowhere near Angola, Louisiana
Down in St. Charles Parish where the sun won’t go alone
Well, but injustice is not confined to Angola, Louisiana
No, it can walk in your living room
As long as it surrounds your home
I’m sending love to brother Tyler, but after all is said and done
Truth is: Angola, Louisiana, you’re the one
[Verse 4: Gil Scott-Heron]
Well, I can’t tell a man not to defend himself
Not at this late stage
Can’t tell a man he got no rights, nowhere
Not in this day and age
This song may not touch a whole lot of people
Persuaded by the truth
But take a look at what’s going on, people
‘Cause this all could happen to you, yeah
[Verse 5: Gil Scott-Heron]
Truth is me, now
I’ve been painting a picture of Angola, Louisiana
Down in St. Charles Parish, where the sun won’t go alone
Yeah, but injustice is not confined to Angola, Louisiana
Well, it can be in your living room
Brother Tyler, hold on, be strong, you’re not alone!
Said I got a letter from his mother that said, “Please, say something to my son!”
Truth is: well, Angola, Louisiana, you’re the one
[Verse 6: Gil Scott-Heron]
Seem like, I say it again
Angola, Louisiana sure ‘nough the one
Never been another one like that one, seem like
Angola, Louisiana sure ‘nough the one
The city blues is sure ‘nough news down there
Angola, Louisiana sure ‘nough the one
One for Louise, don’t forget Ana please
Angola, Louisiana, say
[Verse 7: Gil Scott-Heron]
Well, I’m doing fine ‘cause could have been doing time, yeah
Angola, Louisiana, say, “Hey, hey now”
I could have been pulling time down near where the sun sure ‘nough don’t shine, yeah
Angola, Louisiana feel like, well

It's sad Gil wasn't around when Gary was finally released.
The godfather of rap was way ahead of the game
When he said he got a letter from his mother that said please say something to my son.... I was SHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT...... THIS MAN. If Gil Scott is not what you consider fire, don't speak to me. He was a real one.
The man. Such a great tune!
Yes; the 1st time I heard of him was in 1978 - Angel dust was popular and played in Houston - Magic 102 , but then one evening I during that time I was listening to KTSU …. And I heard Angola …. And this also in Htown there were protesting for Jose Campos Torres and Milton Glover later in the years not much pub.
Yes he is the GOAT and Brian Jackson
My dad did time in Angola in the 40s when they had chain gangs and men slept on straw on the floor. He was a minor. It was the worst prison in the US.
So very sorry he had to suffer Angola - especially as a child. Louisiana has a huge amount to answer for in the past and present.
He probably wasn't an angel ?
@@rafaelpinesa452 What do you know about what landed him there?
@@zacharytaylor3012
What the hell do You think landed him there GOOD BEHAVIOR ?
@@rafaelpinesa452 you know some people end up doing crimes purely out of hunger, i guess it was fucked up being a black man in 40s USA
Today 2017...we are all doing time...in 3-D-lockdown!...That's right Family!

No! We've all been doing time since the beginning of....
Especially while in the physical...
Classic. So much passion, soul and skill.
the groove in this song is addicting
Oh yeah babe! Those were the days! JUST D'AAAMN! I grew up in a time and era that was soooo fucking bad as hell, when it came to music, art, and literature -- right in the heart of "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" by Gil Scott-Heron. Hellooo ... Anybody know what I'm talk'n bout!?
Millenials, no need to reply. Y'all don't nothing bout what I'm say'n. But ay least you got yo rap music -- talk'n loud and say'n nothin.
Smooth bro Gil, miss you man.
True legend.....R.I.P..
I AINT NEVER BEEN NO WHERE NEAR ANGOLA LOUISIANA DOWN IN ST CHARLES PARISH WHERE THE SUN WONT GO ALONE BUT INJUSTICE IS NOT CONFINED TO ANGOLA LOUISIANA IT CAN WALK IN YOUR LIVING ROOM..(cut on your TV.the one in your living room.MN,TX,GA,DC,etc.Rest in Peace GIL SCOTT HERON.Love&Peace😎😁luv ya boy eJ
What a bass line brother
No bass player credit on this song! Is that for real?
Only says Brian Jackson keyboard bass (synthesizer)
Could be like the classic Stevie Wonder funk bass sound.
Beautiful words from one of the best. RIP
Boston Globe listed this song today as a sort-of song for the moment. As a Gil fan, I'm ashamed I didn't know it. Glad to have found it.
@@restless94110 Yes, "Home" is a devastating tune. Need to check out Gil's work with Brian Jackson a little more. More gems mixed in there, too.
Gary Tyler is free! 4/30/16 :) :)
Man gil scott heron was a talented brotha 👍👍!! Shame those drugs & alcohol eventually took him down!! A LEGENDARY, ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME VOICE & SOUND!! THEY'LL NEVER BE ANOTHER LIKE HIM!!

Brother Gill is absolutely our example. We will always love him.
Albert Woodfox of Angola 3 released today after 43+ years incarcerated in solitary confinement .

Timeless...
Home is where the hatred. is
Ich weiß das er gestorben ist...

I saw him in concert in New York.❤️👍
I've only just discovered this song through the Wikipedia entry for Gary Tyler. I'm very familiar with UB40's "Tyler". I'm glad he was finally freed. Angola sounds like a real hellhole going by the other comments on here. UB40 also wrote another song about Brother Gary in 2008 called "Rainbow Nation" which was featured on their "Twenty Four Seven" album.
Love uuu gil!!! ☝️
