- In this video I got over some basics of color theory including tints, tones and shades of the different colors of the color wheel, I walk you through monochromatic, analogous and complimentary color schemes, and I show you how to create rhythm in your color scheme so it looks cohesive. Plus I go over those undertones so those neutrals are creating a beautiful backdrop for your home interior and working with the rest of your palette.

I would really love to see a video about "bad" examples of color combination
I'll send you a picture of my bedroom. Gray, navy blue and yellow. I did it all wrong!!
Come on by! Lol
Hmm. I don't have an example but if you put shades and tints together, they clash badly.
@@albamadero7207 hhahahaahahaha
@@albamadero7207 looks like complimentary colors ^^
There are endless home decorating videos on RUclips and I've seen a lot of them, but Nick takes it to the next level by really explaining just the right amount of theory behind the subject. I think his accessible videos are just as informative as studying a formal class on the subject. Well done and many thanks Nick!
I agree! I just found his channel and have been watching so many of his videos! This channel is exactly what I've been looking for! I want my space to look nice but I never know what products to buy, where to shop, or what to look for and Nick does exactly that! Thank you, Nick! 💜
You just condensed two of my college design classes from 1975 into less than ten minutes😁
You are very natural in front of the camera. It's as though you are speaking to me alone. Thanks for the tips😊
Hands down best video on color theory I have seen! FINALLY, I understand tint, tone and shade thanks to your excellent use of visuals. Love your content, well done 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I'm so glad!
Agree!!!
Going to agree with you. The examples are amazing
Yes, I agree. Clearly explained. I looked at each example and when my heart skipped a beat I could tell what I liked. More, please.
Yes. Totally agree
I did something a little unexpected about 5 years ago (at least in my circle of friends); I painted my livingroom walls a marsala type color (mine was actually called sweet tea). I like boho and traditional so the darker color was a great backdrop to neutral furniture, earthy woods and rattan type vibes. I kinda flipped what people usually do. Friends were skeptical of such a dark color until they saw it. Then they loved the warmth and richness and how it worked with my style. Sometimes you just gotta go for what you like.
I always pick tones, especially lighter ones, most colors in nature are tones, as are historic paint colors, because they only had natural, mostly mineral, pigments to work with. I’m a geologist and pick paint colors colors from my GSA rock chart, they’re guaranteed to be easy to live with and work well with each other.
Thank you. That's a bit of geology of which I wasn't aware. One of my favorite uncles was a geologist who explained the NJ Palisades and the Flooded Basement. I think I remember taking 2 geology classes at NAU. And the only sample I missed in the Mohs scale was a diamond bigger than a 6-point period. I'm such a collector!
Best video so far on colors ,and everything i understood what you are saying ,you are a good teacher well done thank you so much 💓 😊
You are very welcome
Right as rain. I am amazed at how splendid Nick is, and how easy he makes any topic for us. If he taught Chemistry or Physics at school, all kids would excel.
@@daryanahibina515 That's very nice of you. Somewhere my Physics teacher is crying at the thought of me teaching that subject though! haha 🤣
Marvelous tutorial! My late sister was a decorator and had your gift for color. I always admired her skill. I feel like I found her again in your channel. Thank you!
That's really sweet. It's always nice to see nice comments on You Tube. God bless you and your sister. And Nick has some great videos, no? I finally bought a condo two years ago and work at sea on a ship. So while the pandemic was going on I asked my mom to coordinate renovations and they were fully complete by the time I was able to return home. So now I am addicted to design. I never thought a merchant seaman would be this much into this stuff, but here we are. haha. Take care!
My sister was a designer. The only thing she shared with me when I asked her how to go about designing my dream house was, "draw circles." It wasn't terribly helpful. My kitchen turned out to be as big as a McMansion. But I had lots of counter space ... And a really big pantry.
OMG! FINALLY!! …only took 60 + yrs for someone to finally explain yin an easy way!!! Whooo hoooo… new paint!!!❤️👍🏻
Testing a sample is SO important. We painted the walls of our otherwise all-white kitchen (south facing, looks out on our treed yard) apple green. It's crisp and cheerful. My friend's son loved the colour and wanted it for his bedroom. They tested with our leftover paint and in that north facing room with hardwood floors, the colour looked brown and dingy. The difference in the light, and in surrounding materials, had a major effect.
THANKYOU! I never knew there was a difference between tints, tones, and shades. I thought they all meant the same thing! I think this will be very useful information for me in future art work. Yee Haw!
Glad it was helpful!
Yess your colour examples just confirmed my decision to go with pale rose linens for my new bathroom with a sage green vanity. It seemed pretty out there but there's historical precedent, but I feel like I'll be able to make it look modern and fun :)
Artist here, this will be gorgeous...go for it. And about color you can always buy a handtowel to try it...you only need to be careful with big ticket items or more or less.
When I’m choosing a colour I paint the sample pot onto an A3 sheet of white paper and move it around the room, even in the same room there are going to be different light sources and this way I don’t end up with patches of paint on every wall 😂 Love your video and advice 😘
I’m not kidding when I say that this video changed my entire outlook on interior decorating! You’re a wonderful teacher please keep doing more!!!
I like the pace of your videos. You cut to the chase without being curt and I especially like that you include timestamps! 🏆
Oh my god I’ve spent years trying to understand this stuff and other videos make me more confused. Amazingly clear and thanks for making it easy to understand.... phew! 👍🏻
Glad it helped!
I love how you structure your videos. They are so organised, making them easy to follow. Those timestamps are awesome!
Glad you like them! I always appreciate Timestamps to zip around as a viewer so I do them now in all of my videos! What takes me 10 minutes saves you all way more than that I figure.
Love your videos and how well you explain things for us to understand. Thank you.
Nick, what I love about your videos is that inwoven with all the fun and silliness, you actually are a wonderful teacher. You never think anything is over our heads, and you take the time to explain design concepts in ways that we non-professionals can understand and implement. To date I haven’t come across another RUclips channel whose content creator truly respects the intellect of their audience as much as you do.
I know you’ve taken some guff from those insulted by you having articulated your personal design distaste - especially when they perceive it as an insult to their own aesthetic preferences. I don’t - because I doubt there’s a person alive who adores every style that’s come along - you included. Not liking a design element or style doesn’t necessarily make it bad design - just not in alignment with our personality. Since our design preferences are reflections of our personality, that’s likely why people take your cringing and ribbing so personally.
Anyway, I just wanted to express my appreciation by way of rebutting the naysayers. This video is 2 years old, but its succinct instruction is timeless. We’re the better for having you here for us! 💖
Glad I landed on your channel! Would be needing this for my house!!! Thanks for this!
Glad it was helpful!
It’s difficult to believe that Nick doesn’t have formal education in Interior Design. 😱 His wealth of information is solid! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Most informative 9 minutes regarding colors in design. You're an outstanding designer who breaks concepts down to appetizing portions. Thank you, Nick!
First time I’ve actually ever really understood colour tones. Thank you for being a good teacher. Oh and I’m gagging for a house tour! Your place looks beautiful!
Happy to help! I have definitely been planning a house tour!
My mind is BLOWN - thank you for explaining that so thoroughly and concisely!!
This was like going through my foundations class all over again. I appreciate the refresher! And I can't wait to decorate my own space 😌
Perfectly explained! Best video on paint colors I’ve seen. The examples you give really helped. Thanks!
Love your tutorials! Could you do one on how to use wallpaper? Like, how to incorporate it, which designs and colors to choose, how to combine it with furniture and so. I would love to use it one day, but it feels tricky and permanent
Exactly what I needed to figure out my palette! I’ve watched so many videos on paint but this is the most thorough and practical for finding my color palette! Thank you so much!
Thank you for teaching tints, tones, and shades! I hadn’t learned in-depth about it anywhere yet. And I appreciate all the visuals and examples!😃
Hi Nick, I was watching your home tour video with Karin Bohn (loved it, by the way) and I was struck by the discussion that you and she had about whether to concentrate an accent color in one spot or to scatter a few other items around the room with that color. In this video, you talked about the rhythm of repeating textures and colors, which seems like a strong counterpoint to Karin’s philosophy. I wonder if you wouldn’t mind touching on these two points of view in some future video. Best, Mark
Great teaching video!!! First time I've finally comprehended the differences. For me, the visual of the color coding of the words: tint, tone, shade was what gave me the AHA moment. Thanks, Nick.
Just found your channel today. Very impressed, excited for future growth!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you so much! I’m moving from a home with vibrant walls and muted decor to one with builder white from floor to ceiling. I feel like I’m completely starting over and it’s overwhelming! All your videos have been really helpful.
In this short video, you have managed to capture every important design aspect for colour choices, and explained it in such a way that anyone should be able to benefit from. Well done. 😊
First of all, I'm so thankful I have my eyesight and that I am not color blind. I love color and can't imagine what I'd do without seeing color
Your gratitude for your vision is lovely. As a rare person who was born without the ability to see any colors I can tell you that it has its own beauties. Most of the time I don’t regret my lack of color, but others I wonder what I’m missing. You sound like you live in a while different world. 😊
@@aaraujo306 My husband is legally blind, seeing only slight peripherally. Colors may be grayed or orange and coral to purples. But shades and textures are still impactful.
Nick, I'm a designer and I love your videos! Thank you for simplifying it for us 💕
You're so welcome! That means so much when designers love my videos!
Nick Lewis your work is much appreciated 💕
Wow what a learning experience! Thank you for this wonderful video on color basics & especially for the doing the time to do visual graphs with labels.
I've recently found your channel and I love it! You have a wonderful, friendly and calm manner, and you are an excellent educator! I love the way you put the graphics up, like you did with the color examples. Really well done. Thanks!
This was so educational. We have lots of color in our home. Some of it was achieved through trial and error but It's nice to know that our instincts were on target for the most part after those initial trials.
This is the BEST explanation of color theory anywhere!!! YOU. ARE. AWESOME. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much for your videos. They have been very helpful and informative without a bunch of rambling fluff that I have experienced on other videos. You are a wonderful teacher. Thank you!
Omg!! Thanks so much for this. I have been trying to decorate my house ( im not interior designer) basically , because I love doing it. So, for the last 2 years I have been watching all kind of videos to get learn how to do it in a better way. But I got to this video and I have to say that this is the first time someone explains this color thing so well. So, thanks
This is the best video on colors ever!
This was so helpful! Thank you so much! I really appreciate how informative and step-by-step your teaching style is. You made this so simple and easy to understand.
This was SO informative! Thank you.
You are so welcome!
I've been binge watching your videos since I found your channel! You are so knowledgeable and I really appreciate the quality and effort you put in your videos
That was the best video I've seen explaining color and color palettes. Thank you! You're a great teacher and I can't wait to watch more of your videos! :)
Thank you so much!
Your visual aids and illustrations are great. They really help me understand the lessons. Thank you for your excellent videos!
You are a wonderful teacher. Finally I understand tints, tones, and shades; monochromatic analogous, and complementary colors!!! Fabulous video. Thank you.
As a person who has never seen color in her life (completely colorblind) and trying to figure out how to make my home look decent, this is both fascinating and overwhelming.
Thank you for the wonderful lesson. Love to learn it, but I will never be able to apply it.
Apply it with through your own view, you house needs to look good to you not others! (I hope it doesn’t come out as insensitive)
Never seen color theory explained like this. Will definitely save this video. In renovating and was trying to figure out a color scheme. I lean to warm colors. Really good explanation.
Great video! I think i learned more in the few mins watching this than i ever have. Ive never heard anyone actually break it down and explain the exact meaning of tones, tints, and shades. thanks for this!
I love you way you explained everything. So easy to understand. Thank you!
I just found you on RUclips and I love you 💕 Thank you so much for bringing such clarity to using the color wheel. Easy to understand and it finally makes sense to me. Thanks again!
I’ve just discovered yogur chanel and THANK YOU, I knew some things about interior design because I love it, but I feel like I’ve learned so much more things with your videos, and now I have to decorate my new home and I think I will do it with so much knowledge 🙂
I absolutely loved this video, not only from an interior design point of view, but also from an artistic one. Really helpful and beautifully explained, with visual examples, which for me are the bread and butter to my learning. Thank you!
I absolutely love this video! This really helps me understand how I can pull my space together with color.
Thank you, Nick! I've watched a lot of your videos but just found this one. It makes so much more sense now. Marvellous explanations!

So glad you popped up in my recommended! Literally just what I needed, thanks!
I love how thorough you present.
I absolutely love the pink and green and pink and aqua color schemes you show, gorgeous!
This has to be the best RUclips video about colour by far! Love your videos.
You should teach at university level. So well explained, examples are perfection, bravo!
I took so many screenshots! Thank you for the easy-to-understand graphics 🎨✨
Quality video !! Your explanations helped me understand how the color wheel can help create a color story ! Thank you
bookmarking this for future reference again and again! i have NEVER understood how to put together a palette, and this helped so much by putting all the aspects together in a succinct way. now i know where to start.
You really helped me understand tones and tints better. Everything you shared was very helpful ❤️
Thank you for the samples of each theory. It really helps me to understand how to use the theories.
Hi Nick I’ve watched this video before, but I needed to watch it a few times as I always have a problem choosing and knowing what will go with what. Thank you as always. Xx 😘
Thank you for this explanation. So clear and provides me a much better framework to think about putting colors together. Really appreciate it 🙏
Such a complete & related tutorial!! Thanks!
I love really interesting colors in each room, so I mostly use the fun colors as accent walls and keep the rest either gray or white. Keeps everything cohesive while giving me a rainbow house :D
Thanks so much for this! This video is probably the best explanation of this topic that I’ve seen.
Nick I ❤ this video. You have such a soothing voice and are easy on the eyes too 😊. Very informative and comprehensive colour tutorial. Thank you.
I am so glad I found you! I am redoing our basement and have been struggling to figure out color palette and thus has been super helpful!
Thank you so much for this video. The explanation of tints, tones, and shades was particularly helpful.
Well done! Thank you for this straight forward, well-organized explanation.
I learned something knew in the first 40 seconds. That is a record. Thank you, Nick. This color addict appreciate what you did here
These tints, tones, shades explanation made such a big sense!
I feel like this video was made for me. It all made sense in such a logical way. Thank you!
Thank you for doing a true teaching video. Such a huge help! The one you linked at the end was very helpful too!
Finally a clear explanation! Thank you!,
The best explanation of color!! Thank you!
This is the best color guide to decorating I’ve seen-and I’ve seen plenty!
You have amazing teaching abilities. Love your videos, so informative and concise.
Wow! I actually learned three new concepts watching your video (tint, tones, and shades) 🤩🥸😬 and how to use them. I agree, you are a very good teacher. New subscriber 👍🏻.
I'm so glad!
For as long as youtube has been around and has helped me in so many areas, I promise you this is the first comment I am leaving on a RUclips video ever! I cannot say thank you enough for bringing this content here. And specifically for making this video. After watching I literally feel like I can tackle the job that’s in front of me. Now I have a real idea of knowing what to do and it actually makes sense!! Though I have a knack for art, I have never done anything dealing with interior design. To say I was lost is an understatement. This video bought me to the light. Again. Thank you so much Nick!! ♥️🙏🏽
This was wonderful! Such a good video. Content, articulate, concise, time - definitely will subscribe! Thank you!!!
This was very helpful! I now know I want a complimentary color scheme for my space. Now off to learn about neutrals. Thank you.
Impressive!!!! I’m getting ready to design my living area around two chairs which has the colors of different shades of green, charcoal grey and cream. I was overwhelmed with how to connect my furnishings as well as wall color. Thanks for sharing!!
Great video, this is exactly what I need right now. Our home does not have a lot of natural light so we have been trying to figure out what to do. Our furniture and pillows, etc, are mainly blues and teals. We are afraid of making our home even darker but I love a warm and cozy atmosphere. Thank you, Nick!!
This info was very clear and easy to follow, and then apply in my design! Thank you Nick.
Nick! I’ve watched a million video of colour design and you nailed it for me! Music and colour are not my forte! I’m saving this video and will write about tints/tones/ shades in my journal. You are the bomb and I’m glad I found your channel
You're welcome Nancy! Yeah I worked hard to explain with the visual and I'm glad you found value in it!
Nick, you are such a good teacher! And funny too! Love your style!!!!
Such an amazing video, thank you! Anything on colour is welcome content.
Another really useful video. I have a teal wall and 2 or 3 orange accent pieces. Obviously I like it but it's nice to know that it isn't totally wrong. Still got a lot to learn and you're an excellent teacher. Thank you.
Thank you for this tutorial! Also that tool is amazing and can be very helpful.
I thought this was going to be the first of your videos where I wasn't going to learn anything new... until that top tip about how to use Canva at the end. You never disappoint, Nick! :)
I cannot overstate how helpful your videos are to me! I am buying my first home and felt like I was going to end up in a dump because I was so lost when it came to decorating. Thank you!
