  • Ukrainian cargo ship M/V Arvin with an IMO Number of 8874316 broke into two and eventually sank while being at anchored on the 17th of January
The 46 year old cargo ship decided to drop her anchor at Bartin Anchorage in the Black Sea in an attempt to take shelter from the storm.
However, the heavy waves and strong winds broke her in half killing six out of 15 crew members on board.
With a length overall of 114 meters and a breadth of 14 meters, this 2,516 GT vessel was designed for river operation due to its long body and small breadth. Thus venturing out into the open waters during stormy weather met her fate.
The ship is owned by ARVIN SHIPPING LTD Care of Tesoro Marine LLC located in Ukrain.
Last year alone, this Palau-flagged cargo ship was reported to have 28 deficiencies from 3 different Port State Control Inspections.

Also it is an inland vessel
In the former Eastern Bloc, it is not uncommon for ships designed for rivers and larger lakes to be used at sea, at least near the coast. This is not a problem in good weather, but it is when there is a storm, especially as the wave dynamics at sea are completely different from those in rivers. If the ship was simply deployed incorrectly, this happens quickly.

If the vessel was never designed for open sea navigation but instead for rivers, that doubtless was a major contributory factor in the catastrophic hull fracture.
The video actually states that this was the reason for the vessel being so catastrophically fratcturd by the rough sea state.
The vessel had a history of operating with deficiencies and was indeed cited for it.
Being poorly maintained and having untreated corrosion may not have factored into the fracture if it was indeed caused by the vessel being operated in open ocean and in a sea state that it was never designed to withstand.
That apart, no one should have died as a consequence of this incident.

Who would be crazy enough to cross the break to access the mostly severed bow? Second, assuming they were able to sever or release the chain, the bow section was still partially attached, operating in reverse would be extremely slow at best because that front section would act like a scoop and dig in quicker and probably cause the sinking to accelerate greatly.
