Scabbage what is this
This video is making me a bit paranoid now, I can't stop thinking that my lipos are going to kill me!
Man batteries suck!!! Cant wait for better capacitors
You guys forgot an important thing... There is an optimal amount of charge for storage with LiPo batteries...
Optamizm
Ikr?
What is it?
3.85 V per Cell
Which is better for RC :Li-ion or LiPo battery?
Thanks flight test....i learned the hard way about LiPo safety last summer when i left my lipo charging in the back of my car and went inside the house , half hr latter i was helping the fire department put out my car lost it and all my planes and tx!
Wow that sucks, hope by now you have more planes than you did 6 years ago
R.I.P lesson learned
New to RC. You guys bring alot of great knowledge for me. Keep em coming!!
Where's those calculator links?
exactly wheres the calculator
FliteTest You guys don't have a Chargers video. I would like to see a video about Chargers. Please do a video on AC Input, and DC Input Chargers. I'm mainly interested in AC Input Chargers.
Great tutorial guys. Just one other thing that could have been mentioned would have been an explanation of storage charge. If you know you're not going to use your battery for an extended period never leave it in a fully charged or discharged state but instead use your charger to take it up/down to a safe storage charge level. Regards = Nidge
This is the exact information I'm looking for.
Great video, I mean it ...! I was always the old school hobbyist believing EPO and batteries had no place with in this hobby and to use it was sacrileges at best.. But I guess the world is changing and so must I....! So thanks for teaching an old dog a new trick...!
I miss these old flite test videos. Coming back to re watch them brings good memories.
Do you think you could make a swappable EDF?
"You cant plug an EC3 into an XT60".
Yes you can plug a Female EC3 into a Male XT60, you can also do the opposite with Dualsky's DC3. I have to admit i do it all the time.
Thank you! I'm new to Lipo batteries and it is helped me out a lot. But one thing I didn't understand yet: How do I know the health of my battery, how exactly can I determine if I can still use it? (I use 2200mAh, 3S 11.1V 25C and 35C) It would be great to get an answer for that.
+Ido Kuttner If I may reply, get a capacity checker. You can find them on Ebay for real cheap (around 8 bucks). Do a search on lipo checker or meter. It tells you the status of each cell and how much it is discharged.
Thanks for reminding about the dangers of life with LiPo's
I've not got to the end of the video yet, but the section on charging and balanced charging has pretty much answered 4 of the questions I've had for quite a while.
More on picking/using a computerized charger would be *greatly* appreciated! And power supplies too of course!
Appreciate the battery safety tips in addition to spelling out LiPo terminology.
Great video and all, but I don't get the title- what does "safety" mean?
Josh's shouting voice is softer than my moms speaking voice.
"Do not make batteries from you own cells". Whoops... lol :D
Rather interesting question: In almost everything I have read about LiPos there is mention about charging and storing in fireproof containers... Yet, I never see it explained in detail and I never see anyone actually doing it that way.
So..
1. Do you recommend sticking the battery into a fireproof bag while charging?
2. Do you store batteries at storage-voltage in a fireproof bag? I so, 1 per bag? As many as you can fit? etc?
actually what i do is that I put all my batteries in a surplus ammo can, it is pretty fire proof that if one of them or all of them caught on fire, nothing will pass through it , actually i transfer the batteries by my car while they are inside the ammo can (even the life battery for my Tx) ... i don't have enough fireproof bags to put all my batteries in , but the 2200 mAh is in one fireproof bag....this is for storage
for charging , i put the battery in a fireproof bag and charge it, then remove it and put another one inside it and charge it .. for more safety,, i put the fireproof bag inside a trashcan , it is metal and that because i charge inside my house and i think that is much safer
***** Thanks for the advice. I've been looking at ammo containers on eBay. Will get one soon.
biglightbt Good to know, thanks! I'm very careful about all those things. My comment was a few months ago. Since then I've learned a lot. I am getting both a lipo bag and an ammo case, just for extra security. But currently, I'm flying a couple of batteries and I'm simply treating them nicely and never discharging them under 80%. Again, thanks!
as a chemistry student that has seen some serious shit go down, including eight lithium cells shorting out and burning, meh. the fire hazzard isnt too bad there is a ridiculus amount of lipo cells out there, we dont hear about them all burning/exploding all the time..
I use the BAT-SAFE to charge and store my batteries. They are $50-60, and well worth the insurance. You could put a paper towel on top, explode the battery, and the paper wouldn't catch fire. As importantly, it will filter the black soot out of the smoke. The fumes are still extremely toxic. If your battery blows, even in a lipo sack, you will still experience massive smoke damage, even if nothing catches fire. Before I owned my bat-safes, I used to charge my batteries in my oven.....with the oven off, of course.
Somebody please answer this. If I got a battery that's way over the c rating I need for my quad, can it still fly safely? Say i can only pull 64 amps far extreme yet I got a 40C (82 amp) battery?
Thank you!! JUST THANK YOU for doing this shit seriously! We know you don't get much money from this etc. but seriously you guys are the best! You raised my Head again after crashing my first plane on the first flight. Gonna build my own now :D And thanks for the free plans on your website. everyone else would make money out of them and you give them out for free. Thanks.
Greetz from Switzerland
You sir said it. (My Bix3 is in the mail and I can't sleep :)!)
Soo... Is this still Season 4? I'm confused, this is the first episode that doesn't have Season/Episode numbering, and all the later ones are without this information. The RUclips account "Flite Test" has Season 1-4, and also extras splitted out in season 1 and 2 (promotions, quick updates etc).
Is 1 season = January -> December?
When will the rest of the videos get this information?
I have a 3 cell lipo that was slightly melted by a soldering iron. Should I still use the battery? If not then What should I do with it?
Also, where in a house would it be safe to charge or store it? Do I really have to put it in a bucket of sand or a fireproof case when I charge it or can I just put it on a table?
Now you've made me worry that my house will burn down if I keep batteries inside.... what if a battery explodes.... you mean I now have a load of active time bombs in my house that could catch fire at any moment....?
salt water is not the best way to dispose and completely discharge a lipo. you should really hook it up to either a resistant discharger or a 12V car bulb, this will discharge the pack safely and completely down to under 2V (after a few days) then running a insulated blade or a nail into the pack and placing it salt water will make it safe...
if you search lipo disposal on the flite test website there is a great document to explain this process, written by RED20RC
How would this battery perform "urnigy 2200mAh 4S 40C Lipo Pack" with this plane hobbyking.com/en_us/duraflytm-spitfire-mk1a-1100mm-pnf.html
I can not stress just how RIGHT Josh and Josh are about the risk of fire!!! I watch a newbie fly his brand new plane so hard it caught fire mid air and almost started a major field fire in a residential area. Luckily several of us carried fire extinguisher and put the fire out before to much damage happened. Also the following video is what happens when a LiPo burns... YOU DO NOT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO YOU!
ruclips.net/video/EseOhC8n7ro/видео.html
Thanks guys, great video, even a experienced flyer like myself enjoyed the refresher course. :)
I didn't know I was abusing my batteries thank you for this video, very helpful !!!
when the teacher ask you a silly question in front of all the class and u know that if u answer it wrong everyone will laught xd 4:48
"Sand is the best thing to put out a Li-Po fire..."
And in one of the Spitfire episodes they used a dry chem extinguisher, AKA the Grim Reaper of electronics.
Thank you guys, I could've accidentally set my house on fire XD. actually no XD . Cant believe ive been so dangerous I charge my batteries overnight, charge them when I'm gone and I have no volt meter no emergency sand. Thank you could have saved my room, house or my life or all of them . thank you
A very current topic.
Once you guys are finished with the 10 part series it would be great to get it all on a DVD or as a download, my friends ask me all the time about getting into the hobby and I think these videos all together would be a good start for them.
How do they not have RUclips..?
I may learn this stuff yet! LOL Thanks guys!

Helo,
I'm a beginner and some point is not clear for me in the RC electronic system. I would like to ask you that can it causeing some problem if I use a 2800mAh 11.1V 30C battery with a ZTW Beatles 20amps ESC 2-6LiPo what is connected to a SUNNYSKY Angel Series A2208-1260KV 2-3S Airplane Outrunner Brushless Motor (max continuous current: 13A) The propeller size is 1047. So my question is that this battery with the 84A can destroy the ESC or the motor? Or the ESC takes only that amount of amps what the motor and the rest of the parts needs? Will it works with these parameters?
Good explanation on the C rating and what it means. People are often so confused with that.
Am losing ma money, In 2 months 3 ESC been damaged. Could you plz explain more about amps? Ex: I have motor with 40A, 1-what would happen if I use ESC with 50A or 60A?
2-what would happen if I use ESC with 20A or 30A?
What are your recommendation of good ESC amps for my 40A motor
I accidentally short-circuited my 11.1V Lipo but only for about half a second. I then actually did this again by accident but again only for half a second (I pulled away the pliers very quickly as a reflex). Assuming I do not do this again, does this matter? My Lipo's spec is 11.1V 3000mAh 25C. Thank you :-)
LOL just listening to something Josh said - "You can't connect an EC3 to an XT60." Actually, you CAN - Horizon Hobbies, which backs the EC3 connectors, states in their Blade Conspiracy manual that you can plug a male EC3 plug into a female XT60 plug - it just doesn't work the other way around. :)
My AeroScout Mini's motor drops to half thrust after the battery is done and a LED starts flashing on the board, and when the motor drops to 50% power when im at 100% on the stick, i cut the power and land.
Got a question. I got my new Turnigy nano-tech 1300ma,11.1v 3s battery. I checked the the voltage(at the xt60 plug) it reads 11.4v. Is this safe? Also should I do a discharge and or balance cycle with my charger first before doing a first charge? Thanks in advance for answering my noob questions!!
Just figured it out i think.
C stands for current
Thanks for the time You took explaining proper use of batteries. I am new to lipo ‘s and the info was much needed and explained in a way even a slow learner such as myself am now more confident charging and discharging lipos. I very much enjoy Your other informative videos. Keep up the good work and God Bless.
So, I have a 6000 mAh 2s 60c lipo battery and Im gonna buy a 70mm 6s 2300kV edf. Would this give me ideal performance? I heard that the number of cells would affect my performance
And finally you MAY NOT return any batteries that you purchased online.
ALL SALES ARE FINAL!
Should note that a "Lipo bag" is not good insurance and that they are not all created equal... I have a cinderblock in the garage I set my batteries in (on concrete) for charging.. NOTE I SAID IN the cinderblock.. :)
Nice video guys, really informative about batteries. I find that using nitro engines on planes is much more less of a hassle but I'm old school. When I started flying rc-planes there wasn't really electric motors, planes around.
Hey guys! I am brand new to the hobby. I still don't understand my strange attraction to flight but whatever, I think I'm hooked! So, my Horizon Delta Ray just arrived and I'm reading the directions. I come to the battery charging section and it tells me that I can get an AC adapter for the DC car charger and the amps limit should be 1.5A. I aready knew about about the AC adapter and got one from Horizon, but the amps out is 2.2A. Will I hurt my Delta Ray batteries using this AC adapter?
I crashed my plane into a tree, and it is dangling approximately 30 feet within the branches. I tried shooting fishing waits attached to string and attempted to shake the branches to release the plane. However, every attempt failed. Will my lipo battery, which is 2S and 1300mah, combust and cause a fire? Thanks.
I'm looking to get some new batteries for my flamewhel 450. Does anyone have any suggestions or a good battery calculator (besides Josh Scott)? :-)
CB
Is this possible to fly rc airplane with 3s 18650 laptop battery and 1400kv brushless motor?? Replay any one
can you help me out with this i bought a rc plane a wattage s&a viking the manual suggests a wattage 10 cell 2200mah 5/4A NiMH flight battery i can not find anything remotely close close every thing say lippo and nimh is outdated can you maybe help me find a quivalent
hitec electron 6 reciever
hitec hs 55 servos
wattage IC-30a micro speed control
is what i bought per the manual
Thank you very much! I am always confused in C rating. :)))
Is this possible to fly rc airplane with 3s 18650 laptop battery and 1400kv brushless motor??
It is hard to listen to these two guys because of the EXTREME competition and CONSTANT interrupting
Discharging a LiPo below 3.0 V per cell damages the battery, but it is not a safety concern as implied in this video.
The recommended practice for disposal of LiPo's is to discharge them to zero volts, cut the wires off and put them in the trash. I have discharged several batteries to zero V before disposal. They did not get warm, explode, or burst into flames. If you short circuit the battery, or do something else to draw it down much faster than normal the wires can get very hot (possibly causing the insulation to burn or melt off), and the battery hot, puff, and in very extreme cases pop and flame. But if the battery is connected to it's normal load (say spinning a prop) or a small light bulb the rate of discharge will actually drop off as the voltage is reduced and there is no safety issue at all.
I think the video should be revised to eliminate the implication that discharging below 3V per cell is dangerous.
It would also be good to add a section on storage and disposal of LiPo's.
Storage safety requires care to assure no short circuits can be made by wires, plugs and containers. Watch out for coins, nail clippers etc. in a pocket.
Storage voltage is best for a discharged battery. 3.8V/cell which is typical of end of flight voltage on most planes.
Storage temp. .... Cooler is better. Don't leave them in a hot car! For long term put them in the refrigerator.
Disposal...discharge slowly to 0 V. cut the wires off and put them in the normal trash.
No words about internal battery resistance? Long non-use of lipo battery? But it's a great lipo beginner video!
Yeah well... My battery is underslung on my quad and when I fail safe it gets bumped. These fuckin things are too expensive to get rid of because of that especially when all the cells are still balanced and working properly.
you're fuckin crazy if you throw away ur lipo because of a small dent, give it to me. (Also I store my batteries in a lipo safe pouch so I'm a tad bit safer that way? I guess.... lol)
I allways charge with 5c. Gives me a lot more flighttime. Only 12 minutes of charging. I don't charge my batteries before i go flying, i charge them at my flying field. My 3cell batteries are over 5 years old and still going strong. They have been used a LOT, in planes and helis. I think it's worse to charge ten batteries at 1c and leave them fully charged for a period of time before you go flying.
I have a Phantom 2, and it's "smart battery" and dumb charger seem to make this difficult. Any advise for Phantom 2 owners?
You guys are awesome! "Is this more math"..lolol..I Can so relate to Josh Scott. Would you guys recommend the lipo battery bags I've seen advertised?
i use to play with rc plaines during the 80s with aa batt. i use to recharge them on my 12v car batt.
i feel like starting again, but seeing what i have to do to keep myself safe from the ncr18650b i'll
rather leave it.What does these batt. cost,i'm from south africa
Can I use a lipo, batt, to replace this, dc 5-36v 200ma@5v/90ma@12v for a Runcam eagle. newbie
I believe C stands for coulomb
capacity, 20C means you can draw all power in 1/20 hour
+ Sg Kingly it stands for cucumber
It actually stands for Charge rate. The maximum discharge current is the same as its maximum charge current. It is a measure of current given in terms of the battery's capacity. Bartlomiej's answer is also correct. If you have a 3000mAh (3Ah) battery rated at 10C, then it can discharge all of itself in 6 minutes, at a rate of 30 amps. Keep in mind that burst rates and continuous rates will be different for every battery.
Thanks Mike J, i was clueless
Charge Rate is measured in Coulombs... Essentially, a coulomb is an amp-second due to Charge = current x time.
Scared vs. respect.... I don't think you should teach beginners to be scared, but you should teach them respect for the lipo batteries.
I used to fly with 20 C rated battery's some swelling so then tried 30C rated and much better not any swelling , now I just purchased a 50C battery All the same Type battery 3S 22,00MAh so is this 50C even better that a 30C battery ?
They are crazy important, what is more important, wings, motor? Is there insane crazy important? Good video, good info!
Some thoughts on storage voltage would be nice. 3.85v per cell is what i understand. Question is, is the a certain amount of elapsed time when you should consider putting the lipo in storage state? I would imagine if its only going to sit for a few days, might as well leave it fully charged...
Whats with the 6S at the end that's got the Red and Black leads connected together? I know that particular one it isn't the main leads but it did look like it for a second. What happens when you accidentally connect the black and red. Big Flashes and Fire instantly. Beginners Guide - Safety, No mention of shorting or cutting leads You missed an important little detail.
Great vid, only thing greater would be if they actually took a battery apart and explained to people how it actually works, as people prob still don't understand 2s versus 4s etc.. or post picts in the vid of them along with picts of the so called puffy lipo's etc..
Please, please, PLEASE do not recommend using salt water to dispose of LiPOs. This is an urban legend that took on a life of its own. When actually put to the test, it was found that the salt water corroded the contacts on the battery before the battery had a chance to discharge fully, so the battery remained partially charged and unsafe.
The best way to discharge a battery for disposal is to use automobile taillights. Solder your favorite connector to some wire, solder the other end of the wire to one (for up to 3 cells) or two (for up to 6 cells) taillights in series, plug your battery into the newly created discharger for a few hours. Then check the battery voltage to ensure it's close to 0, cut off the connector, strip the wires and twist them together to ensure that any bounceback voltage goes away, and discard the pack.
These LiPo batteries must be rated for extreme current draw at low voltage to exhibit such primitive characteristics. This was the problem that Edison had when he electrified his phonograph in 1879.
Scary. What do you store a Lipo battery in? If you don't charge in your house where do you charge it? If I don't use the Lipo for a long time will it lose the 3.3 volts and then cause a fire? How do you dispose of Lipo?
I think that ether my 3s 10000mah is to heavy for my drone or my throttle is to low. I try to fly my tarot fy690s with 750kv motors and 1355 propellers but it does want to lift. Do you think that a 3s 10000 mah is to heavy?
may I just ask what is the difference of LiPo battery to nanotechs? sorry guys noob guy here, just 13 years old and trying to have a this new hobby. :)
Or in India u can learn commercial studies instead of mathematics
I just took a course in electrical engineering and I'm confused by volts do you mean something else? Because amps is the speed of electricity , volts is the pressure of electricity, watts is the amount of electricity
I would like to see a video on how to chose and set up batteries with your equipment..like can you use your battery on a quadcoter for a camera and motors at the same time? What are the option..Thanks for your great videos guys..
So I have a couple handfuls of those little baby 1s 150mah batteries that I can't use anymore. So, to dispose them properly, soak them in salt water and then?
hi guys noobs here..if i do have 6000mAH with 2s it is safe to remain 3.50 per cell?or i make it higher?
How can I charge this battery?
hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-800mah-2s-20c-long-lipo-pack.html
I am planning on buying your mini trainer speed build and want to buy a bunch of batteries with it. Can I charge all the batteries at once? What would I need to charge all of them at once? I am new to the hobby and don't have a charger. please leave links. thanks!
Hmm, I didn't know that sand is good against a lipo fire. Although I did find out the hard way that water is bad for it. But I was told by someone that baking soda is great against lipo fires also? Do y'all know if there is some truth to this?
How do I store batteries? In a lipo bag obviously but how charged should they be? And if I don't have a charger that smartly puts it at the specific charge level how do I get it there?
I am an old hand from the NiCad days, so these lipos are new to me. my charger will do more than lipo, but it does not have a discharge mode. how do I get my batteries into discharge for storage voltage. running the motor seems like a bad idea due to heat buildup.
Got the same question about how to storage lipos. Charged or uncharged? for longer or shorter periods like months and weeks. Also what is the best way to storage lipos? i got a special bag when i charge and when i storage them when not using the lipos or is there any better way to storage like special boxes ect thx in advance!
Please get rid of the little guy. He just dumbs down the presentation without adding any value.
Math is my friend but this is somewhat confusing because I am making a tricopter.
I am hopeing to get the hobby lobby sky surfer < www.hobby-lobby.com/1.4m_sky_surfer_arf_battery_included_1041923_prd1.htm > and I was wondering if it is fine to fly in the snow.
Will a LiPo battery discharge during storage? If so. What is the proper way to store one?
These batteries are very touchy, I understand why people say they are dangerous it's because they are.
I race shortcourse trucks and i will drain my batteries to 2.7 volts and they are fine
I plugged normal full battery and it released smoke. Is it steal useful I mean it works and stuff
What battery should I use for a 2200 kv brushless motor with a 30a esc?
All the talk about safety you never mention the lipo sacks you can charge in that are fire proof and you have one holding your packs on the video , they are dirt cheap and they work
As someone who has shorted way to many pieces of electronics by accident i like to call them
Spicy pillows
I like how they assume manufacturers don't lie about the C rating
I have 1000 mAh battery 40C can you tell which motor can I use
