Then he was tossed into the unforgiving landscape, and met his real father ProJared. He had a real child later on with a normal woman because he was a nice looking young man then she died by the lakeside fishing. This caused him to lose his edge as guard an dream about his second wife constantly until he was mercilessly killed by bandits named Gluubs, and PBG. Before he died he thought they looked familiar, but didn't have time to think as he was being slaughtered with blunt weapons. His son witnessed the tragedy with his own eyes causing him to fulfill his fathers legacy as the gate keeper becoming a silent knight who really likes pumpkins. Playing it while listening to this video. Thank you for introducing me to this awesome game! It's getting an update real soon and maybe you should check it out again someday if you haven't already..
@Projared I think that you should check out the Steam Release on Nov.1 and give an updated take....this game is so much more complex now but the core concept has remained constant. Help us get some attention to this game!
Jared: (To Holly) My donkey punches will give you blunt head trauma. *SIX TIMES IS BETTER THAN MORE THAN SIX!* Heidi: (walks in) *WTF* Jared: *o shit* Scott: *HeY AlL ScOtT HeRe*
I absolutely love this game some people don't like how long it takes you to do things but I think that just adds to challenge and makes the game more realistic
Wow, I never realised how much I loved the soundtrack used in this background of this video. It’d be really interesting to try this as the game was back when ProJared made this videos, but I’m sure it’s changed so much since then that it’s barely the same game. Hopefully the soundtrack is still as good.
Core concept is still the same but the game is vastly expanded. It just got released on Steam and it's easy as hell to get the mods that make the UI better through Steam workshop. Definitely recommend as it's what brought me back.
Hey, just wanted to say thanks to your review I finally got around to playing this game with a friend and I really like it. It's a shame it hasn't picked up more traction but the developers really put a lot of hard work into it, it's very impressive.
This video nearly brings tears to my eyes. It just gives off so much nostalgia, it's what gave me this brilliant game. Thank you so, so much ProJared. For those of you who don't know, this version ProJared is outdated and abandoned, (Although still available to play.) there is a newer and arguably better than this. It's still perfectly F2P though, don't worry. You can pay $15 to get some buffs and the older version in this game. The newer version is 3D and has a ton of new features. Both versions are worth playing. They're amazing games. They've brought more happiness into my life than most other video games. It's completely changed my outlook on games. I joined the forums and before that could barely speak because i've lived out in the country with no friends, but could now have a real conversation. It bonded me and my siblings together. It showed that some people could be trusted and some could not. It's easily, my favorite game of all time. And i doubt that will change anytime soon. Also, alot of people are saying the newer version is P2P now. It WAS, but that's gone now. You can play it anytime, for free, for forever. If you are interested in this game at all, please play it. You will love it.
Mighty Scout It's not really like DS. My friends and I played this game quite a bit and it's really it's own unique thing. As Jared said in the video, everything is very challenging and time consuming, and often it's not for much payout in the long term. It's one of those games that's inherently addicting by nature, you just want to keep playing to see what comes next. The biggest flaw about it is that death is permanent, so after you've invested 20 hours into a character just to accidentally look at skype to click back and see you were killed by a boar, that's most likely the point where you say fuck it and stop playing.
Shmandalf The permanent death and challenging thing is like Don't Starve. The wiki use is kind of necessary too because you don't know where half the stuff you need is and how to get/make it.
You're going to be waiting a looong time my friend. You could try Salem. They made that even more recently and could be seen as the spiritual successor to H&H, but imo it isn't quite as good. Also, the graphics were given more detail, but sweet Christ did they make it creepy... Also, death is much less a problem which sorta takes the fun from it.
I want to set the record straight. Anyone coming here now is going to be put off by everyone saying new haven is shit. I have played both Legacy and New Haven, and I can honestly say I prefer New Haven. The look of the game was revamped with the addition of elevation and landscaping, There are way more ways to decorate and lay your base out because the game is now properly 3D. Combat is much more approachable and the world looks all around better. Haven is currently in its 10th world, which will likely be coming to a close within the next few months. There are also way more ways to interact with other players. Players can found kingdoms which cover large territories, and compete with other kingdoms over land and resources. While I personally don't take part in much PvP combat, it's definitely something that happens. I will also add the the game is definitely free to play with optional pay-once and subscription upgrades which offer convenience bonuses like a slightly bigger inventory and faster action timers. You can also buy cosmetic hats with a new one added every update. Updates are usually weekly with a server reset, and the servers are exceptionally stable. I experience no performance problems on a mid-range rig and if it's really bad for you there are custom clients that offer performance enhancers such as disabling some models and animations that are likely to occur in large numbers like crops and beehives. Overall Haven is still a fantastic game that hundreds of players sink their time into and I urge you to at least try it out.
I've noticed that many games look to recreate a retro feel, but in all honesty, this is the closest I've ever seen a modern game get to a classic PC game like King's Quest. And that's not a complaint. I love it.
The consept of waiting for accomplishment is an attention to realism I don't exactly feel keen on. I suppose it helps in adding somehting to accomplishment, but a minimum of 16 hours just to craft leather? 10 to 30 minutes would've been fine, because I can propably multi-task any number of things during that time, but in 8 hours for each step, you'd need to plan an entire day in the game around that. That doesn't exactly work in a game like this. It's a bit more excusable with handheld devices, because that's something you open and close more frequently during the day and can sorta work around small spurts. This is suppoest to be an MMO exeprience that you consiously invest yourself in with a PC. And considering they wanna sap away with monthly fees nowadays for a game that's designed around wasting time? That's a bit shaky logic.
+AlluMan96 Well the 16 hours thing has a bit more to it. Just throw a pelt on the drying rack, as long as you have a pelt it takes about a minute. When it's done throw it in a tub, takes another second. Do that en masse and you'll be swimming in leather. Also you only need the monthly fee if you play more than 14 hours every week, I verified my account and I'm doing fine. A lot of the community backlash to the payment model was because they neglected to mention it before release. They said it was more of an afterthought and apologized about it. Also now that they actually can make money from the game it is updated weekly, as opposed to once every year or so.
You don't need to stare the drying frame/tanning tub intensively for hours, you put hide into frame, then wait. You can even log out for that time. Then you place dried hide into tanning tub. You don't really need to plan your day around it since dried hides can be left on frames and leather can be left on tanning tubs, there's not some time window you need to take them out before they expire. Unlike silk. That shit is something you need to fit into your daily schedule.
Not if you have claimed your camp or have wall built. Depending on area you've settled, of course, but usually people don't bother leaving scents at noob camps.
For a group of players that knows what they're doing that could be a boring thing to watch... but considering PBG and the crew he hangs around with... *evil grin* I hope he considers it. God I hope someone foolishly unlocks swimming.
It's just too slow and requires so much time investment, they would have to meet up for session after session. Plus it can be kinda hard to die if you know to keep your distance from hostile animals
So someone combined Minecraft & Dark Souls, and they got Haven & Hearth. And this game is only in its Alpha stage? I hope this thing gets finished & hopefully they change the time it takes to do anything from real-life hours to in-game hours. I also hope this game gets released on the consoles, seriously, this game sounds fun as heck & freakin addicting. Not knowing if a player is a criminal or not, that sounds fun because you have to be careful who you trust. Remember the expression "keep your friends close & your enemies closer", well in this game, I'd say "keep your friends closer and your enemies as far away as possible".
this game is never going to leave alpha. i played it a few years ago, it had very different progression system but almost nothing has change in those years.
I can see where you're going with Minecraft & Dark Souls, BUT! This game was "released" (or well, alpha opened for the public) before both of those games even existed.
It's so tempting. I'm a sucker for really hard things in a game that you can work for. It makes you proud of them, especially when they can be taken away and you and your friends can help guard them over a long period of time. Hnnng.
My friends and I played this game quite a bit, and I guess I'll share our experiences here. It's fun; the crafting and farming and stuff all really does feel rewarding, because it actually takes effort and patience to accomplish, as well as the different skills and abilities being all unique, which means you can be good at one thing where your friend will be good at another. For instance, when me and my friends played it, I was good at cooking, so I could make all the good food to increase our stats any way we'd like, whereas my other friend was good at fighting, so he could go out and collect all the good curios to level up our learning abilities, and my other friend was good at farming, so he could get me all the ingredients I would need for cooking, and doing this promotes unifying in communities within the game. The combat in the game is downright hard and can't be done until many hours and points invested in the right skills to even make it viable. The rewards vary from combat too, sometimes you'll get a really good curiosity while others you'll get nothing. Because of this, combat isn't very important in the game, you can get on perfectly fine without it. Overall, for a simple free game, it's a lot of fun to pick up and play with friends, but is very addicting and will take dozens of hours and days upon days to get far. One of the main things that can restrict your play times is that there usually is only so much to do each day, like re-racking your tanning stations, re-setting your curio's, and if I recall there's also a stamina metre which fills up when you're logged out, meaning you can't play forever without stopping. The biggest downfall of the game is the perma-death - there's nothing like putting 20 hours into a character just to look away for a minute and look back to see your character was killed by a boar that had no business being there. That's usually the point where any one says "fuck it" and stops playing. Fun game, but really hard and the perma-death thing basically just makes people stop playing it alltogether. The perma-death system allows your next character to 'inherit' some traits from your last character, but it doesn't even come close to making up 90% of the skills and abilities you lost because of it. That definitely needs to be changed somehow, but other than that a fun experience if you have some friends to play with.
Thanks, ProJared, for letting me play this insanely addicting game. It's like RuneScape all over again, except more intense. All my roommates call me weirdo, since I'm playing this shit, while I'm trying my best to convince them to join my village. It's quite lonely out here... the whole map is as big as the size of Southern Cal. But then again, it has so much content and exploration that ONCE YOU GET USED TO IT, you can't quit. It's just that only 5% of all people who tried this game gets used to it... -_-
Mabinogi used to be like this, sorta. It sucks that they've revamped everything so much to spoon feed people, especially with the whole reforges thing that is a clear copy of MapleStory's potential system.
Eagle Thats funny, I was playing Mabi just before watching this video... I do agree with you, but I think the way it is now is also fun. But they should do a reboot of some sorts, this game has so many good ideas wasted on bad design.
***** Honestly, I think reforges ruined a great part of the game. Kinda like how potential did with Maple. Now everyone's focused on doing the most damage in order to solo this boss or that shadow mission. I miss when people actually had parties and were social.
It’s really interesting looking back on this, it’s like a modern mobile free-to-play game, but it was designed 6 years ago, had no micro transactions, and was for the PC. That’s so cool! But also really weird, with ProJared discussing how it takes so horrifically long to do everything, since it was 6 years ago and it wasn’t a common thing, but now these days it happens so often that we are used to it. It’s a shame it’s got micro transactions and is probably a completely different game now, but it’s awesome that this video still exists as a historical record of what this game used to be.
It does technically have microtransactions, but it's more to help with the costs for the game since it's free and it's just two guys working on it, and from what I can tell they just give you cosmetics and slightly up the speeds. It seems like the game is more forgiving now, but it still seems fun to play with friends, but I probably won't be playing much because most of my friends either can't run it or aren't interested in that type of game.
I found xenoblade chronicles x at a library. now I just need a library card!( would have one but transportation issues prevents me from bringing what I need to get one )
Thanks for getting me onto this game! I love seeing all the negative comments in the chat and imagining them starting out at the end of a world like I did, unable to find a single Mirkwood log or boulder. Well, 6 days in and I couldn't be more pleased with my base! I wonder if Jared still plays.
TrueChickenlord I'm gonna do my best to get people into the game, I do have a big viewerbase on youtube but sadly all they watch me for is dota content D: But hopefully I can get a few people to try it still :3
This game went way down hill when it turned 3D RIP Haven and Hearth I was a stupid stupid man 8 years ago, this game is amazing (bar the people who no life it a bit too much)
+John the Phantom --- I Hate Google+. you can still play that one, but getting access to it requires buying a verified copy of the current haven and hearth ($15).
I was playing ocarina of time during this and during the compilation of the sound effect I bought something and the effect went off in the game and it just was so perfect
When he said Harvest Moon MMO I about lost my shit, unfortunately it looks like that's only about half true. Still looks worth your time and I'll probably check it out, but if they ever actually released a Harvest Moon MMO with all the same elements just...MMO... I imagine I'm not the only one who would never leave their house ever again.
Couldn't be the same. In Harvest moon you can do all you want yourself. Why would it be mmo then? They'd have to make ways to specialise, in which Rune factory offers better options (and let's be honest, mmo without any combat would probably fall into obscurity).
Totallynotkyubey Probably. But I think an effective way to counteract that would be to limit the amount of things you can master. So unlike the solo games where one person is a solo production company, maybe they can only grow/harvest crops but they can't turn them into meals or goods, alternatively maybe they can build or smith but not grow things. By not letting you accomplish everything by yourself it would force you to work together and perhaps in the same way a more traditional MMO like WoW introduced the ability to work together over larger objectives to take fortresses, perhaps in this case the effectiveness through which you work together raises the town rating you're a part of which in turn benefits you by offering more innate buffs and things to do. Even if that wouldn't work and as you said without battling it wouldn't pull in enough crowds then use the above idea and just introduce the Rune Factory, fantasy elements to it.
Project x zone is bullshit, just by playing the demo you can see that it is a bad game, but the Nintendo magazine of my country gave it a fucking 9.5! What the fuck!? That is why is better to believe to this reviewers instead of the ones who do it on magazines
Nicolas Cortés yea it was really bad but not "that" bad, i think the worst thing about pXz was a case of "first game syndrome" when a game could have been good but it ends up sucking since the creators didn't know what the hell they were doing, maybe pXz2 will (hopefully) improve the flaws pXz1 had

Frederico Augusto it is still in very early stages, so players is probaly more valureble then money to the devs at the moment, and they wil probaly add some kind of monetization later
+Frederico Augusto As of now (3/6/2016). Free - Unlimited access to the current build of the game Verified (one-time purchase of $15) Same as previous except +10% LP gain a copy of Link's Hat (cosmetic) Unlimited Access to the Old version of Haven & Hearth for as long as it continues to exist. Subscription - (several tiers) Same as previous except +30% LP gain instead a variety of cosmetic hats depending on your tier package and level. As an extra income source, they also offer cosmetic hats you can buy to commemorate patches or certain events, which are slowly phased out over time. All of the hats can be acquired/re-acquired via a Hearthfire on any character on the purchasing account.
when i first saw all this stardew valley coverage, i thought it was a remastering of this game tbh. I guess it's probably eaten up any potential players this game had too
I feel like Stardew appeals a bit more to that Harvest Moon sort of craving for this sort of game, while H&H hits more of a DayZ spot. for lack of a better comparison. so I can see a good amount of player overlap. x3

jumjum died? but... i thought he was smart, he won the knowledge contest. he outlived PBG and Glubbs. Did he die valiantly?
NextLevelGamer He died due to a deranged player slicing him in the back, tying his tail through a piece of wood, and turned into paddle ball.

Please do new one on this game. It improved so much, yet the gameplay is as good as ever.
Having to wait real time for something to grow? What is this a mobile game?
+DankJush The difference is there are no microtransactions. Or at least there weren't when this video was made.
And there's a lot more stuff to do. While there are some things that you'll want to get off and wait for, there's almost always something to work on.
You know what they say about blunt head trauma;

Thank you Jared. Now I know that the correct thing to say when wanting to make new friends is asking them whether they value their lives. =D
They changed the game man. They changed It! You need to get back to this
This game sounds interesting.
I'm fucking sold.
YO JARED DO A 8 YEARS LATER REVIEW
Hey, just wanted to say thanks to your review I finally got around to playing this game with a friend and I really like it. It's a shame it hasn't picked up more traction but the developers really put a lot of hard work into it, it's very impressive.
"That's all cool, though. JumJum Jr holds onto the skull of his dead father every day." All ten of them?
it was a quality 10 skull, back before the game changed a heap of stuff, the game has a quality system
It recently released on steam so it would be cool if you looked back at it again after all these years
wonder if he still playing this every day.
@@gaspardsavoureux8680 RIP
Is it top down, or on the ground
@@snake4322 Sorry for late reply, it's the same as this version but with a moveable camera, since it's 3D.

Cheapo!!!
I tried downloading it and it made me get the latest version of java. JAva then blocked the game and stopped the download... whyyyyyy?
So this game is like Don't Starve mixed with an RPG?
That's the vibe I got from this video.
I'd say it's more like Don't Starve and Clash of Clans
Also I'm not f*king 12!
I'm 10
"This will be a video. A video on the game. For you to watch."
I love you man.
Ild love to see a 10 year update on this game. to see how its changed
I can't wait for this to be fleshed out.
Salem looks really bad now, but don't all games look like crap while in beta?
It's been a couple years since this video. If Jared's still playing it, I'd love an update.
"So that it doesn't lose its freshness!"

This will be a PBG Hardcore Series
For a group of players that knows what they're doing that could be a boring thing to watch... but considering PBG and the crew he hangs around with... *evil grin* I hope he considers it. God I hope someone foolishly unlocks swimming.
It's just too slow and requires so much time investment, they would have to meet up for session after session. Plus it can be kinda hard to die if you know to keep your distance from hostile animals
True. Not to mention the lag. Their servers were never really the best.

3:52 An Excellent Cameo.
This game was "released" (or well, alpha opened for the public) before both of those games even existed.
it was way before minecraft
You forgot to mention Don't Starve.
orly4672 I love that game. Got to the 4th adventure level but then I stopped playing because I was so worried I'd fuck up.
What music is playing in the video?
The game's music...
It's so tempting. I'm a sucker for really hard things in a game that you can work for. It makes you proud of them, especially when they can be taken away and you and your friends can help guard them over a long period of time. Hnnng.
Not sure if you'd want to recommend anyone looking into the game now.
Whenever I try creating a login for the game, it says that it sent me an email to verify my information... except it didn't.

+Johnny Waffles uh what?
That definitely needs to be changed somehow, but other than that a fun experience if you have some friends to play with.
am i the only one who liked the old pixel haven more than the 3D haven graphics

Othwrwise cool story bro
Even if that wouldn't work and as you said without battling it wouldn't pull in enough crowds then use the above idea and just introduce the Rune Factory, fantasy elements to it.
whenever i meet someone new i always make sure they feel safe around me
"DO YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE"
I lost it at that point, absolutely hilarious
I'd love to see you revisit Haven because this video is why I started playing.
This looks to be very similar to Wurm. Love it.
also very similar to Unreal World, just multiplayer
This. I freaking love Wurm.
So, uh, what game was Jared playing on his 3DS?
Jesus Monroe If I had to take a guess, I'd say Project X Zone. It was released in the US a couple weeks before this video went up.
Jesus Monroe Project X Zone, recognize it from the "FIGHT!" Given the horrible review he gave of it, it's a bit surprising.
Scott Tomkins It was all right for a bit, but super repetitive. The combat was novel, but nothing to write home about.
The wait times sound like they are supposed to mimic real life to an extent
It actually sounds really cool.
I feel like if the game took less time to do anything, and remove micro transactions, this would be perfect
There are micro transactions now?
