Thank you so much for these greatest videos of Celtic designs ! And Thanks God for all of the people just like you . After watching some of your creations - i finally got the results!
Thank you for this easy to follow technic... My son has been asking me to draw him a Celtic knot Circle, on and off for ages..and now I can! Thank you I'm off to make his Christmas Present! Lol
You're really amazingly patient with your little faerie! I can just see her sitting there - tendrils of hair all askew, furrowed brow, tongue peeking out of the corner of her mouth as she tries again and again to get it right! (My mother always said that it's all in the way you hold your tongue!) Thank you for another wonderful demonstration.
Dear David, Your tutorials are excellent - thank you SO much. I have been dabbling with knots for a wee while now (and not progressing very fast) but i find your methodology, with circles as spacers, works beautifully. I have achieved levels of complexity i had not imagined attainable so quickly. Your work is truly a gift. Thanks again. Best wishes.
David Thanks for all your many video's on drawing celtic forms. I'm a woodturner that's 'trying' to incorporate carved knot work in to his turnings and your videos (old and new) have been a wonderful aid. Once again, cheers! Tom Stratton
I am really enjoying your channel! Ive been working with your Celtic design ideas. They are very inspiring to me!! And i did just find the golden mean folder! Thank you so much! Great channel!!
These videos are great! I've been doing celtic art for years using a method I found in an obscure book that I lent out and have never gotten back! I may try your method out, especially to try this circular border method out, as this seems easier than my method for circles. Thank you so much for posting these!

The rubber that I'm using in Tutorial 1(and various others) I've had for 20 years. I like it because I can use it accurately. I has just run out and I've replaced it with a Pentel Click Erase, which is similar. However, any soft rubber will do. The trick is to do your guidelines lightly and not put any pressure on your pencil.
Very funny. Thank you; while I'm only at your fairy's skill level I've been trying to make a circle for months, and I just couldn't do it. I wish I'd found your video this time last year when I had only started trying to make this work.
Hi David, I have just began to learn how to do this art and I am getting on fine for a novice thanks totally for your videos. Just a quick question about this one. Do the circles that are used for guides reduce in size as I get nearer the centre or do they have the same radius throughout.( The Circles marking the cross-sections)
Thank you for your kind comments If you want the strands to stay in proportion you'll have to reduce the separation of the circles as you approach the centre. It's explained in one of them
Is there a specific kind of eraser you use for removing the small circles and lines when you are finished ? I've tried several they all make a bit of a mess. And thanks again for all the tutorials, they are all very good.
You're so funny! Being disabled, I could sure use on of those fairies to do my grunt work! Lovely drawings, as usual. Can you do break lines in a circular pattern knot?
Lini Branco Does this mean you enjoyed it? you sound as though you're enjoying something! ;-) Thanks for all your kind comments - please pass the links on Dx
Love your tutorials and your sense of humor, especially when you complain about the ineptness of your "fairy",which strikes my funny one rather hard,I must say!
Thanks a lot. This video helped me so much. Would you be so generous and teach the kind of triple braid knot in circle or straight or whatever just like this understandable! You know like hair braid but in a circle please. Thanks
@@davidnicholls100 thanks alot... I went on to try it; but I just couldn't figure it out!!!! after drawing the grid... the lines...parallel lines... wher should they go? and which one goes on top of which one? and in which direction? and all... I'm so stupid.... mmm but this is just beyond me... not my strongest ability is to draw... That's why I'm trying to improve... thanks any way but guide me a bit more if you had time and all... it would be soooooo appriciated; as it is the help that you just have provided me with.
Coral. in pencil draw a circle 10cm diameter . inside it and from the same centre, draw another circle 8cm diameter , then another 6cm diameter. Draw your radials through the centre point. you now have a circular 2 unit grid
It's probably a big heavy pencil for a little ethereal faerie/fairy to wield for any length of time; no wonder she's tired and won't do the shading. (Have you tried offering her a pay rise?)
I appreciate your tutorial and your tipical british sense of humor ( and the fairy too of course) but I can't understand what's your problem with the compasses... Is obvious, if you grasp a leg and try to draw naturally the compass will open. There is an handy pin on the top for the twisting, use it, you'll love it
^The compasses and me go back a long way! I stole them from school when I left there in 1964! they were always a bit loose and I over-tightened them. It's sometimes tricky to set them to the right measurement but better too tight than too loose (as the actress said to the bishop!) ;-) I don't have a problem with them - I LOVE them and I would never part with them! I have at least 6 pairs of compasses and I always go back to my old school ones! Thanks for your kind comments, Luca PS Mine don't have the 'handy pin on the top' but I don't care!!!! ;-)
Dear Mr Nicholls, I didn't mean to disrespect you, I follow with amazement and wonder your tutorials and, if if I should, in any way, offended you, I beg your pardon. I just remembered my technical drawing teacher, who, seeing someone using the compass for the leg, was used to throw the blackboard wiper with homicidal purpose. Personally, to avoid the opening of the compass, when I have to keep the precisest distances, I use an instrument that, in Italy, we call "Balaustrone", a compass with a micrometric screw that regulate and block the opening. I wish you my heartfelt greetings, and I hope you can add many more exciting tutorials. P.S. please, forgive my poor english too... Best wishes
Luca I can't think why you might have offended me, but I can assure you that you haven't!!! I have three of those screw compasses and although they are easier and more accurate, I still go back to my school compasses. I'm glad that you enjoyed my videos. I haven't done any for a long time but I'm half way through a series on The Golden Section and I'm planning a series on four-dimensional projections as ornament (check out Claude Bragdon and Charles Howard Hinton on Google if you are interested). Thanks again for your kind comments, Luca. I hope you have a good New Year. Best wishes, David
