David, I arrived here looking for "how to" video on Celtic knots. I was hooked for the whole series! Your technique, teaching methods and presentation are excellent and have rekindled some of my "old" skills. Cheers.
I felt that when you said " there's always somebody putting the line there , don't put it their" I am that somebody. But you are an amazing teacher, funny, sarcastic , creative. Respect !!
Thank you for this series David! I have a brain injury that makes spacial perception and orientation pretty tricky...not to mention just holding the damn pencil lol! After much struggle I managed to *sort of* replicate this knot. Thank you, this must be so good for my brain! x
Thank you David! I have been watching many tutorials on Celtic knotwork, and yours is the first to give such clear techniques to control the width of the strands and empty spaces. This will improve my knotwork for sure!
This Gentlemen is amazing. I came here to learn some simple knot designs and was hooked on how easy he made the work. He also has makes the lessons quick, efficient and has a good sense of humor.
This is so well explained and clear. Now I understand all of the things I did wrong / struggled with when trying to copy Celtic knot designs without going step by step
Thank you. This was so much simpler than the other techniques. Grid of squares, circles in middles and at intersections, oever-under strand lines between (not around) the circles, complete arcs + corners for edges. This is a technique I can actually remember.
This is great ! I watched all of them and going to watch again. You have made this so it makes sense. So much better then what I have seen thus far. Thank you for sharing !!!!
I'm a little late to the party but this is SO much easier than I thought! Thank you for clearly explaining this and pointing out common errors, I almost fell prey to that myself! I will be looking at your playlist of...21 you said? I look forward to them!
I love the Kind of stop-motion used in this Tutorial. It shows how much work and time you spent in this project. And thanks to you, I can finally Master this artwork, too! A big thank you!
just found you, thank you so much ! went and straight away decorated an envelope beautifully with this pattern using only a ruler and a pencil--basically free hand!!
Thank you David for a really concise video. I struggled with the Celtic knot in my calligraphy class, but your instructions were helpful and easy to follow
Wow, I think I finally understand how to do this. Now I have to try it. Thanks so much for this video that gives me the confidence to believe I can do it.
for some reason i can do portraits and sketches of people, animals, plants and so on. but knotwork always gave me trouble. This is a fantastic way to teach how to do it!! thank you so much for sharing it.
Im the opposite. I cant draw real life or anything very well at all. But anything involving maths and patterns i do pretty well. Seems to come naturally to me. Currently training to become a tattoo artist
Its a lot to keep track of, at least for me. Free handing them is nearly impossible. I use them in carving and decoration so the drawing is more of a blueprint I suppose, not the final product.
Thanks for that - I've worked through your other videos and have had much fun doing my own designs - as you say, this is not the method that is normally shown by the "authorities" but it' s a damn sight easier to understand! My only modification to your idea has been to make sure that the break lines also have a thickness (the space between the circles) - that seems to work better in my brain - thanks again.
Thank you so much, I hae tried to draw these for many years and never been happy with my finished work; your preparations method of the grid makes perfect sence, it dawned on me the moment you drew the first pair of lines. I paused and subscribed straight away, going to watch the rest. Eurika moment! 😊

Mr.Nicholls, I chanced upon your tutorials yesterday and I’ve been hooked. I’ve seen almost all the videos in this playlist and have been drawing Celtic knots since yesterday. I couldn’t help noticing how these knots look like a 3D version of “kolam” that we make in Southern India. In fact, I tried making Celtic knots based on kolam designs. I wish I could show them to you. Your tutorials are so easy to follow and I love your sense of humor. I hope you make more such videos. I would love to see one on how to stylize these knots and perhaps a detailed video on shading (I know you’ve touched upon it in one of the videos). Thanks once again!
Mamatha, Thanks for your very kind comments ;-) I am glad that you are finding my videos helpful. I would love to know more about kolam designs. Please send me some images of your work. It is very nice of you to take the trouble to write. Kind regards, Davidx
Never seen your videos before but I stumbled across them because I'm making a ring and I'm trying to make a knot design that goes around the ring. I've drawn alot of things like this, like with vines wrapping around trees, or stuff like that but knots have always messed me up. I designed my sister's tattoo that is a treble clef with a rose vine wrapping around it and a rose at the top. She loves music and her middle name is Rois so it worked perfectly. The tattoo artist didnt change it at all except for the rose, he did his own which I think mine was better but just my opinion. I'm trying to figure out how to do the border style that eventually meets itself, so I can wrap all the way around the ring. I'll watch the other videos you've done and check them out. Thanks for the videos. Cool technique and I was able to draw this as soon as the first four lines were drawn. Well done. Cheers
Hello, I came across your video that made it so easy I got it straight away not only that but I guesses the corner pattern. I’ve looked at all different ways to do a Celtic Knot that were so complicated I gave up and just traced them. You’ll be interested to know I’ve made a couple of simple “Celtic Knots” using paracord that made some wonderful toggles. Thank you.
