It's true that experienced framers can drive a nail w/2 blows: one blow to set the nail, one blow to drive it home. They typically use a 16 oz (or more) framing hammer and many of them blow out their elbows around 20 years in, also their wrists (using a hammer is mostly wrist action). But as another viewer commented, most framers use nail guns these days, using their hammers mostly to bang pieces of wood into alignment/place before nailing it in w/a gun. Also, screws are used a lot more these days over nails, as nails can and do pull out, screws do not. And I agree w/many others who commented here that walls and roof framing members should be 16" on center (OC) due to both snow (gravity "live" load) and wind (lateral load). This coming from an architect w/nearly 50 yrs experience who started her career in civil/structural engineering. Great video, as always. Stay warm out there! Hi Jay. As far as your Mr. Buddy heater I have had the same problem with mine. Number one ... when propane gets that cold it does not perform well. Number two ... the flame from the pilot is not strong enough to satisfy the thermocouple (the metal tube in the pilot flame). I found a workaround by removing the back of the heater to get to the pressure regulator. From there I was able to increase the gas pressure to the heater fr om the tank. This created a stronger pilot flame and better heater performance. Good luck my friend and know that I enjoy your adventures.
It’s because the pressure drops in the tank and the propane within the tank starts to turn into liquid gas which happens at really cold temperatures either warm the tank up or turn it upside down (works for gas cookers as well but they have to be made for lpg use something like the optimus Nova Expedition cooker or similar) or use special winter gas it contains more butane and doesn’t turn into liquid as fast but smells more
Propane in a tank is always mostly liquid and it evaporates as needed. At such low temperatures rhe vapour pressure and evaporation rate will be low. It will also cool further as it evaporates during use. The pilot flame is for ignition of the main burner but also to heat a thermally atuated safety valve. This valve shuts off gas flow if the pilot flame is extinguished forany reason. At such low temperatures the gas pressure and heat emitted by the pilot flame will be less than normal and you will need to hold the pilot starter down much longer than normal if it even ignites. It is dangerous to adjust the pressure regulator as it will then overfuel the heater once the room warms up. Best to use woodstove for the initial warmup and then propane for a quick boost when you need it.
@@JamesV-my9uh I adjusted my regulator as a retired heating technician. It did not take much adjustment to increase the pilot flame. I suspect that many of these heaters are working under-pressured right from the manufacturer. There is no way to adjust the thermocoupling into the flame further. My heater now works well in all temperature ranges.

Jay you said you don’t know how those guys do it in two swings to drive the nail in. Well, they don’t do it anymore. Most if not all use nail guns anymore. You probably would have done well to invest in one before you ever started to work on the cabin, they are a big time saver. I’m a little partial to the gas/battery operated Passlode nailed gun. Using a hammer is like using any tool the more you use it the better you get. Speaking from 40 years of construction work
Hey boss if you're going to pound nails with a hammer get a bona fide 20 or 24 oz framing hammer. It will help a lot also get a nail puller for those errant nails that don't go where you want them. If it were up to me I would get a nail gun whether it was a fuel f u e l driven Hammer from one of the major manufacturers or if you brought along a small compressor and an air-driven nail gun. It will save you tons of time and every time you pull the trigger it will drive the nail all the way and it will do it correctly. So for what that's worth have a wonderful time and I'm so honored that I get to watch you work on this fabulous cabin. I wish I could be there helping. For all those of us who are broken and can really go nowhere thank you for sharing your experiences with us. But dude get a nail gun

I personally have to draw out all my building plans. Take your time and draw out that front wall with measurements, get detailed with your rough openings for your windows and all stud measurements you need. It makes it so much easier when it's time to cut your lumber and get it all nailed up. Good luck!

Suggestion…as you travel to your cabin, carry your small propane bottle inside your coat. Propane does not do well in cold temperatures. Your body heat might help it perform better when you arrive and use your Mr. Heater Buddy.
Yeah Mr. Buddy’s will not run well in super cold, propane is the problem. They are great overall, just not in super cold area. I learned this from post10. ❣️🍀
I use one on my screen/ covered porch in winter and have learned from experience in the cold i keep a blanket wrapped around it all winter, this keeps it cranking everytime.
Love your videos and you continuing to learn. In the US 24" OC is for roof trusses and interior non load bearing walls, exterior and load bearing should be 16" OC.

You’re very right. But I do need them in my basement because it’s flooded twice. Although I’ve installed a French drain and a sump (with a marine battery backup), I don’t want anything on the floor in there. Definitely a very different use than Jay’s, but I hear you and don’t disagree.

We live in Illinois/USA. We always say we can tell when it gets really cold here...when the snow creaks and snaps. But, it doesn't get as cold here as what you deal with up there, Jay!
Perfect construction, the screw grabs the wood and the nail has a high shear factor. Living in Canada, you know just how cold it is by the sound of the snow when you walk on it, and that is damn cold lol.

I have a difficult driveway but a local propane company said they couldn’t deliver yearly contacted another company and they work with me back up driveway but able to turnaround to go down and they come during the winter find a company that will work with you . Just got a supply of propane and it’s such a relief ❤
Awesome Video Jay ! While your framing the side walls at 24oc. I’d suggest 12” o’c for the front wall. You will need to factor in snow load and using 2x4 will require additional studs. 2x10 sandwich headers with 1/2” plywood would be a bare minimum.
I turned up the sound to watch this one , hearing the snow crunching under your feet while walking made me get on another layer of clothing , now I am all bundled up and still inside my warm cozy house .

Jay When it is that cold you need to hold the pilot light button down for 3 or 4 minutes to keep the pilot light burning until the iginiter warms up. I was having the same problem with gas heater in garage. A friend of mine who works construction taught me and explained in great detail.

Dude, your framing sq thin leaf is 16in as well as 1+1/2. The long leaf is 24in and 2in wide, I’ve set out many a stud wall. I would strongly advise you screw everything as it’s much easier to undo if you make a mistake. Search Larry Haun on RUclips - there are 3 videos covering everything you’ll need to know from floor through walls (including setting out for window openings) right up to trusses and tying in all roof components. Hy Jay when you build your wall add a extra stud the last stud making a L so when you put up your next wall you we’ll have a bigger area to nail to also 16” O/C would be a good idea. Keep up the great work your doing fine lots of heart 😀🇨🇦

There is plenty I can build and have built but the idea of a full wall with windows would be intimidating. Your propane tank maybe too cold. I agree with @Tburd7950
Also before you leave your camp you should load up your wood stove so it's the first thing you do.

He doesn’t want to wait around in the cabin until the stove cools down so he can refill it.

Architect can specify 2x6 studs on 24" centers ........o........r 2x8 studs on 24" centers

Heads up.... Those shelves are garbage. They will sink quickly over time. Good Jay secured them as they will rack very quickly as well.
You’re very right. But I do need them in my basement because it’s flooded twice. Although I’ve installed a French drain and a sump (with a marine battery backup), I don’t want anything on the floor in there. Definitely a very different use than Jay’s, but I hear you and don’t disagree.

Great video Jay. I’ve always found when I’m looking at building something and I’m not too sure how to put it together, I draw it out on paper and afterwards if it’s what I want I’ll have a small blueprint of the build to have for reference. Stay warm up there cheers.
I have also suggested to plan it on paper, but Jay likes to wing it on the fly!

We live in Illinois/USA. We always say we can tell when it gets really cold here...when the snow creaks and snaps. But, it doesn't get as cold here as what you deal with up there, Jay!

Perfect construction, the screw grabs the wood and the nail has a high shear factor. Living in Canada, you know just how cold it is by the sound of the snow when you walk on it, and that is damn cold lol.

Hi Jay great video once again...run a 2/8 or a 2/10 on the bottom of the cabin where your new floor meets the existing cabin....it will keep those beams from twisting and fill in that gap....👍👍😎

And it's great for when you're working because chances are you can take a layer off once you get too hot; if you get cold, just go inside and sit next to the wood stove. For me it's perfect

I have a difficult driveway but a local propane company said they couldn’t deliver yearly contacted another company and they work with me back up driveway but able to turnaround to go down and they come during the winter find a company that will work with you . Just got a supply of propane and it’s such a relief ❤

While your framing the side walls at 24oc. I’d suggest 12” o’c for the front wall. You will need to factor in snow load and using 2x4 will require additional studs. 2x10 sandwich headers with 1/2” plywood would be a bare minimum.
I turned up the sound to watch this one , hearing the snow crunching under your feet while walking made me get on another layer of clothing , now I am all bundled up and still inside my warm cozy house .

Sir I applaud you and your attitude about the cold, I grew up in Chicago and hated the severe cold. I liked the cold I could still do stuff in. This cold would not be fun. Your attitude think is what makes this cold “fun”

Jay When it is that cold you need to hold the pilot light button down for 3 or 4 minutes to keep the pilot light burning until the iginiter warms up. I was having the same problem with gas heater in garage. A friend of mine who works construction taught me and explained in great detail.
Yup was just gonna say that,my buddy heater does that whenever its cold i have to hold the pilot down 3-4 minutes

Dude, your framing sq thin leaf is 16in as well as 1+1/2. The long leaf is 24in and 2in wide, I’ve set out many a stud wall. I would strongly advise you screw everything as it’s much easier to undo if you make a mistake. Search Larry Haun on RUclips - there are 3 videos covering everything you’ll need to know from floor through walls (including setting out for window openings) right up to trusses and tying in all roof components. Hy Jay when you build your wall add a extra stud the last stud making a L so when you put up your next wall you we’ll have a bigger area to nail to also 16” O/C would be a good idea. Keep up the great work your doing fine lots of heart 😀🇨🇦

There is plenty I can build and have built but the idea of a full wall with windows would be intimidating. To see you be open and cognizant of your limitations and fears and then decide to press ahead was just so great.
