Dan, you know and I know that there will be another film next year in Halloween Ends, but put yourself in the mindset of the characters in this film. They truly believed that they would lead the charge to end Michael Meyer's reign of terror. You failed to understand that.
I haven't seen the movie but I agree with you about how it is when some people tell you you're basically wrong if you don't enjoy a movie that they did as much, or even if you don't at all. Discussion is cool, but your opinion is the only one that matters.
First off,I think Halloween 1978 is the best movie ever made. It is my favorite and a true masterpiece. That being said, I loved Halloween kills! I think why most people don't like the Halloween sequels is because you can't reproduce the brilliance of the first movie. John Carpenter was adamant about not making a sequel,he said the story has been told. I think they should of listened to him. I do love most of the sequels and I'm glad they're there. But, imagine a world where there is only the original film.. That would be amazing. B.t.w. the evil dies Tonight got on everyone's nerves I think J.m.h.o....
Yeah I know the ending to Kills was actually was different based on comments from people who saw the screening. I think if we got everything as it originally was going to be before covid pushed shit around and everything was closer together in release dates it'd be better.
They’re going to dig their heels in with Ends and it’s going to be even worse than Kills. The fact that they’re going to try and tackle the pandemic in the next one all but confirms that, seeing how poorly they handled the mob aspect in this one lmao. It’s gonna suck ass and be hilarious
You missed the best part of Michael murking the firefighters - that they thought they could stop Michael by spraying him with the hose like he was a cat.
You know, I get the feeling that the theee years this movie had to sit before release was probably a bad thing as far as reshoots and stuff. It’s like the more time they have to rethink and reshoot movies, the more they over think it and end up ruining them
Loomis isn't a deepfake effect - it's one of the crew working on the film, who has an uncanny resemblance to Donald Pleasance. The voice was provided by a voice actor.
I think this maybe shows how the aversion to CGI is less about the CGI looking off and more about a subconscious distaste for replicating a person's appearance.
@@sivad1025 I feel like when the audience is aware that it's supposed to be a particular character and that character has been recast, people don't usually mind. So maybe making up/digitally creating a person that looks *too* much like the original actor is the "real" is the pitfall.
@@LittleScarfGirl Why can't people just recast actors like they do with Batman & Spider man constantly? There's a disturbing, borderline religious obsession with "keeping the sanctity" of the original actor's performance.
@@leonkuwata4510 I completely agree. Recasting never used to be an issue, and to some extent it still isn't. (Take Hulk and War Machine in the Marvel movies.) But other times it's like the studios think that if the character doesn't look 100% the same as the earlier iteration, the audience won't know who it is. Do they really think we're that stupid? We could have understood cameos from Princess Leia and Luke in the Star Wars properties even if they were portrayed by other actors, and it wouldn't have undercut the moments.
Don't feel sorry call the film like is people love bad writing that why the director will make you think it's a masterpiece but real movie fans will see the problems in this
I really really hated this movie. And I LOVED 2018. This is a mess. Its cool kills with literally no story or even structure to the movie. Its feels like a weird clip show pretending to be a movie.
Was going to do a review for this movie, but you literally took the words right out of my mouth. I actually think I disliked it even more. Great review Dan. Whole heartedly agree sir!
Best review of this film I've seen so far. I enjoyed some of the kills but the story of this reboot trilogy is a hot mess. It's very clear that their goal was to discard the previous mythology concerning what drives Michael to kill (i.e. voices telling him to kill his family) and focus on a similar obsession in those directly affected by his actions. That direction seems at odds with with trilogy's focus on Laurie Strode. If she doesn't matter to Michael, why should she matter to the audience??? I quite liked the previous mythology (runes aside), especially H20 and the weight Michael's return had. I don't understand Michael's powerset here... he's essentially superhuman but allowed himself to be imprisoned for decades?
Literally every point Dan was making on this one, I was like, "yes, yes, YES!" I don't always agree with his thoughts on some movies, but I was more scared by how in sync we were on this movie than I was with the movie itself.
Dan, absolutely agree with you on every point. I would go a step further and specify what kind of mob this movie was wanting to denigrate, but outside of that I came out of this film feeling you point by point.
Also Dan, side note, that wasn't a deep fake CGI thing for Donald Pleasance's Dr. Loomis, that was a practical prosthetic. There's behind the scenes stuff about it online.
I believe you meant to say the Sheriff Leigh Brackett character was played by "Charles Cyphers" 9:30 ;) Since they brought Kyle Richards back for Lindsey Wallace they should have asked Brian Andrews to reprise his role as Tommy Doyle from the 1978 original, would have been a nice reunion, oh well.
@samhain4000 Oh I thought that was for Halloween 6: The Curse Of Michael Myers that Brian Andrews didn't have an agent that is why they had to re-cast with a "creepy, awkward" Paul Stephen Rudd as Tommy Doyle ;)
I was entertained, however it really feels like they didn't have this planned when making the 2018 film. They do way too much backtracking to fit characters in and make them seem more important than they really are.
A flashback to Myera getting arrested in 78 was originally planned for 2018 but never filmed because it would have inflated the budget. I think it was Carpenter who said he suggested cutting it.
I've realised that "this ends tonight" must refer to the fact that 2018 and 2021 took place on the same night. So it's years apart for us, 5 hours apart for them. So the 3rd film must end as the sun rises on the same day or something like that. Edit: hadn't got to the end about the 4 year jump.. there goes that idea
that fair enough but I actually enjoyed halloween kills more than I did the 2018 film, not a perfect film at all but it did have a couple of suspense scenes that worked quite well and I liked the 1978 stuff
While I did enjoy the movie quite a bit (I thought it was a HUGE step up from 2018's part 1), and I'm totally appreciative of your take on not liking this, I'm going to disagree on the Donald Pleasence scenes. I was super excited to see him brought back!! I was SHOCKED that the studio kept this a secret, especially from the marketing. What a huge surprise to see one of the greatest horror-hero icons return (even via CGI). I'm sure his estate was fully involved and compensated and it was just a really special treat for the fans!
It’s my understanding that the Loomis effect was not an effect , but a 12 piece prosthetic. The actor they got to do that character was built very much like Donald Pleasance. Anyway, you made so many points that were spot on; but I do have to say I really enjoyed it when I saw it! I just had fun!
I loved this movie to pieces, and I liked the previous film quite a bit too. 2018 feels like a harrowing PTSD story, where as Kills feels like a story about survivors guilt mixed with a cautionary tale about what happens when you let mob mentality overrun better judgement. I don't really understand why people dont seem to care for this film, but that's Hollywood baby.
The actor who played Little John, Michael McDonald, also played the Henchman Flattened by Steamroller in Austin Powers. In both films, he is killed by Mike Myers.
The weird thing for me is the decision of moralizing about mob mentality in the movie where you can justify a mob with very little question. Yeah, if "evil incarnate" (in a movie world) were terrorizing a town, I wouldn't be pointing fingers if people got together and went on the hunt. Which is why the hospital mob sequence felt so fabricated: you just want the "lesson" by itself; the other escaped patient is a pawn for the writers and director to bring some sort of depth to the movie. Also, movie: WHY would you have me at the end rooting for Michael to wreck every single one of those mob idiots??? It all was so frustrating to watch. Ugh, I hope David Gordon Green doesn't do the equivalent to The Exorcist sequels he'll make.
I LOVED, Michael's brutality and that's about it. This was a mess. And I agree with you 1000 percent! 2 topic's wasted about 25 to 30 minutes and there was no need for it...1st topic that started the movie, going back to the original film(per se) and what we never saw, re Hawkin's Fk'ing up, was not needed. Or should I say, we sure AF did not need 15 or so minute's on this 1 topic. It took the 1st 10-13 mins of the film, then brought up again later, and AGAIN near the end w the flashback to the cop telling him it was an accident, switching guns, etc..as Hawkins then tells Laurie it's his fault....SO NOT NEEDED!...All we needed was, 1, MAYBE 5 minute scene where Hawkins said, he had his chance back in '78, and failed, so it's all his fault...DONE...OVER...15+ minutes cut out, and or put to better use.....Then the 2nd waste was the mob, as you noted. Good theme to explore, but not for that long......Also really tired of the "character's making STUPID AF decision's-cliche, is yet again exploited & abused to ridiculous ends.......Tommy and Co.....stupid and wasted.......This movie could've and should've been SO much better, but so much is wasted here, which is why it is so disappointing....Now I saw the Director say, the finale, HALLOWEEN ENDS.....takes place 4 YEARS LATER!!!.....With how it ended, so the dozens to hundreds of town folk who are hunting him...all the cops....all the cops from the other town's who were supposed to be coming to help out..just GAVE UP?.....MANHUNT called off, and Michael just walks away...POOF...for 4 YEARS..?........GTFO
Dr Loomis is not a deepfake. When making Halloween 2018, the filmmakers realized their construction coordinator looked a lot like Pleasence and saw an opportunity to use him in a flashback scene. The voice belongs to a professional impressionnist.
People who have an argument with the movie, i can defend it -Evil dies tonight mob: it's a satire on how or what people will do in mobs, that's ending up doing or saying stupid things, also, looks over 40 years change can change people -It was michaels movie, he's the protagonist to show how dangerous he is -Tommy doyle was the antagonist of sum sort, but an anti-villain, he wants to sooo badly get rid of evil but barley cares about damn near anything else besides saving laurie like she did in 1978 -Michael isn't a full on human, no mortal man can get up from the beating he took -Instead of thinking david gordon green had an agenda or message, ya just chalk it up to nobody is truly safe, old, young, gay, straight, first responders, children, legacy characters, mobs, or anybody innocent (besides babies) -It's the middle chapter of a trilogy It's personally my favorite sequel, but has the perfect myers & second best mask, however I just want to be civilized in the comment section with what u think mates 🔪👍
It felt like a completely different production team made the movie. Except cinematography wise, it felt poorly edited, paced and the symbolism they were going for made meaningless, by a juvenile stereotype of mob culture. They were turning to do too many things, when the main point of the story was to explain how Myers becomes a supernatural entity. Whether the town fuels it with fear, hate, etc., they lost their way, wasting time on Tommy and the hospital.
One of the parts that made me scratch my head was when Allison's boyfriend's dad is talking about his friendship with her father. Like those kids had been dating well before the events happened so how did they not know the father's were friends 🤔 at some point in time.
9:33 Leigh Brackett (a woman), was a science fiction writer (who coincidentally died in 1978). The character is Leigh Brackett, played by Charles Cyphers, who played him in the first two films.
Laurie mentions in the hospital something about Michael can't/won't die until she dies. I think that's the gap this movie was stumbling to build; which explains the absurdity at the end with the mob. So my assumptions is that the 3rd film will be both of them dying - which is really the only way this can go at this point. ***Also, Dan - I'm surprised you didn't make the connection that the guy screaming at the steamroller in Austin Powers is Michael McDonald - Little John in this film.
Yes, because the characters IN THE MOVIE who were chanting "Evil dies tonight" knew that they're coming back for a third film. What? That's like Laurie yelling "CUT! Why is Micheal moving? He was just stabbed in the back!" Was it repetitive them chanting "evil dies tonight" Yes, was it corny? Yes. But I think it was the director trying to take us into the moment, a town of people held hostage by a maniac who kills indiscriminately, and they've HAD IT! I understand where people wouldn't get it, and maybe be even annoyed, but they have done FAR worse movies about Micheal Myers, I love Rob Zombie, but those movies...wow, I think they did an incredible job bringing the characters and the town into the modern day. Great review, just a different perspective
I just got back from seeing it in a theater. I'm genuinely shocked at how bad it was. I can't believe it's the same team that made 2018. This was a total descent into schlock with an endless parade too-dumb-too-live characters. And I can enjoy schlock if that's what I'm going in for, but the original and 2018 weren't really that. Probably my biggest dissapointment of the year.
Yeah, but Resurrection has something that Kills does not, and that is Busta Rhymes saying all of the Busta Rhymes things and at least giving me something to chuckle at
I hate the “you just don’t get it” excuse. They never even explain why they DO like or enjoy something. It’s a cop out so they don’t have to actually engage with an opinion that differs from theirs.
In the original Halloween 2, it seemed like Haddonfield was a small town. In this movie it seems like it’s at least a mid sized town based on the size of that hospital. There’s no reason it should’ve been so poorly run or descended into chaos so quickly
Dan, I was hoping you would comment on how terrible the choreography and filming was in that final scene where Michael gets up from his beating and gets up to kill about six people! Where was everyone else and how come no one saw that and stepped in?
It may not end tonight in terms of the real world experience of when you watched the film, but it likely will end tonight in the timeline of the story given that all 3 movies seem like they will happen over 1 24 hour (approximately) period.
As someone who hasn’t really like a single Halloween film, the 2018 film surprised me with how much I loved it, and I was really looking forward to Kills. So I was disappointed during the film to see the writing for the characters take a nosedive. Suddenly every is the same, spewing the same lines over and over. *Evil Dies tonight* *For forty year, he’s haunted this town, and tonight… we end it* *It needs to die, and I’m the one who’s going to kill it* The over abundance of new characters, and ones from the 78 film really do make the movie very convoluted and uneven where the 2018 film had simplicity. Where that film also stood on its own relatively well even if you haven’t seen Carpenter’s original. Halloween Kills almost requires that you’ve watched both canon films back to back, knowing them like the back of your hand, in order to fully grasp this one, which given the delayed release, didn’t help very much. That said, on 2nd viewing, I found myself enjoying the film much more. Everything felt smoother, and I was able to better absorb where the film was going, knowing what was coming. The kills are pretty brutal and creative, while the humor is more forced than the last one, there were plenty of laughs for me, especially with the Two Johns in the Myers House. The score here is incredible, every track instantly resonating with how epic and gnarly it sounded. One odd mixed-positive I found on my 2nd viewing, was something that wasn’t really present in the last film, but has been in previous Halloween films: The hilarious moments of stupidity. Whether it’s Michael kicking the girl and making her shoot herself, Nurse Chambers shooting out all the windows of the car and making that dumb noise before Michael kills her, or Michael obnoxiously stabbing the dead guy over and over to see which knife works best. It provided moments reminiscent of classic slashers and 80s horror. All of it built to a climax with Michael getting his ass kicked which I found very satisfying, even if it was temporary. And overall, I’m more excited for Halloween Ends than I was on my first watch. Long story short, it went from a C, to a C+ for me.
I interpreted the ending as the fear, anger, and hate Michael inspires empowers him. In the flashback, Hawkins stopped them from killing Michael and he gave up and was arrested. The mob at the end attacked him, so Michael was able to strike back and kill them all. My daughter posed the question of what would happen if the town destroyed the Myers house. I kinda hope that's addressed in the next movie.
I had the same exact thought about Austin Powers when I watched it. Just a baffling movie on all fronts. And it only gets more insane the longer you think about it
I’ve not seen this movie but I clicked because I can sense some anger fixing to come out of Dan…
I'm happy Dan is bringing back "hanging brain." Been too long since I've heard anyone utter that phrase.

I am recording my review right now of the movie and I think the best way to sum up this movie is that it was "one of the most entertainingly confusing movies I've ever seen in the best and worst ways"...
I hope everyone understand what I mean basically I am 50/50 on the movie, really liked half of it and then was confused and just frustrated with the other half... REVIEW SOON ON MY CHANNEL!!
Technically, won't all 3 movies be set to happen all within 1 night? So, in a sense, it IS true that "evil dies tonight."
No, there's going to be a 4 year time jump for Halloween Ends.
I'm with you on this.I almost left the theater so many times.I had a visceral reaction to it.it pissed me off. Thanks !appreciate this.
"That'll be fun - let's stuff that in as well" -- I laughed so hard at Dan's delivery
Fun fact: the guy who played the guard in Austin Powers who gets steamrolled is the same actor that played one of the gay guys in Halloween Kills
B.t.w. the evil dies Tonight got on everyone's nerves I think
J.m.h.o....
I think once Halloween Ends comes out, and I believe it’ll be the end, this whole trilogy is gonna work really well when you watch them back to back!
Yea watching them all in one sitting will make it better. I felt like it was just filler.
You put all my thoughts on this movie...into words. I hope Kills will make more sense once Ends is released and brings it all together.
You missed the best part of Michael murking the firefighters - that they thought they could stop Michael by spraying him with the hose like he was a cat.
An incredibly low pressure hose for a fire engine
You know, I get the feeling that the theee years this movie had to sit before release was probably a bad thing as far as reshoots and stuff. It’s like the more time they have to rethink and reshoot movies, the more they over think it and end up ruining them
Love this style review! long form is always best. Thanks Dan!
Don't feel sorry call the film like is people love bad writing that why the director will make you think it's a masterpiece but real movie fans will see the problems in this
“He mercs an entire engine company of firefighters” made me lol
30:30 probably not the doctor cause Michael Myers squashed his head
I really really hated this movie. And I LOVED 2018. This is a mess. Its cool kills with literally no story or even structure to the movie. Its feels like a weird clip show pretending to be a movie.
The whole "you don't get it" defense feels like it was birthed from Nolan fans and really solidified by Snyder fans.
Why does nobody go for the fucking head?
Dan, absolutely agree with you on every point. I would go a step further and specify what kind of mob this movie was wanting to denigrate, but outside of that I came out of this film feeling you point by point.
Also Dan, side note, that wasn't a deep fake CGI thing for Donald Pleasance's Dr. Loomis, that was a practical prosthetic. There's behind the scenes stuff about it online.
Yay new review!
I believe you meant to say the Sheriff Leigh Brackett character was played by "Charles Cyphers" 9:30 ;)
Since they brought Kyle Richards back for Lindsey Wallace they should have asked Brian Andrews to reprise his role as Tommy Doyle from the 1978 original, would have been a nice reunion, oh well.
@samhain4000 Oh I thought that was for Halloween 6: The Curse Of Michael Myers that Brian Andrews didn't have an agent that is why they had to re-cast with a "creepy, awkward" Paul Stephen Rudd as Tommy Doyle ;)
good observation about the morgue lol
Should have been a scene where the police ask the mother to identify the body. I wouldn't want my loved ones laying out on display for all to see
Loved the Austin Powers reference, especially since the actor playing “Little John” is the guy who gets run over in AP
i kind of loved the 1078 flashback scenes. they nailed the vibe and look.
@@DwanGarcez Building work began on the Tower of London
Edit: hadn't got to the end about the 4 year jump.. there goes that idea
that's what I thought too a whole trilogy taking place in one night seemed like a cool idea
that fair enough but I actually enjoyed halloween kills more than I did the 2018 film, not a perfect film at all but it did have a couple of suspense scenes that worked quite well and I liked the 1978 stuff
I've decided that I pretty much agree with Dan on just about everything. Great review and analysis!
Hahahahaha your commentary about aaaallll of it could not be more on target. This was cathartic after I endured this awful movie. Thank you!
It’s my understanding that the Loomis effect was not an effect , but a 12 piece prosthetic. The actor they got to do that character was built very much like Donald Pleasance. Anyway, you made so many points that were spot on; but I do have to say I really enjoyed it when I saw it! I just had fun!
You explained most of the things I disliked about this movie far more eloquently than I ever could. Excellent review.
I loved this movie to pieces, and I liked the previous film quite a bit too. 2018 feels like a harrowing PTSD story, where as Kills feels like a story about survivors guilt mixed with a cautionary tale about what happens when you let mob mentality overrun better judgement. I don't really understand why people dont seem to care for this film, but that's Hollywood baby.
oh man I love disappointed dan reviews lol they're so funny to me for some reason
This is an average slasher story wise, with great kill sequences.
so 99% of slashers then
The actor who played Little John, Michael McDonald, also played the Henchman Flattened by Steamroller in Austin Powers.
Maybe the real danger was the friends we made along the way.
People who have an argument with the movie, i can defend it
-Evil dies tonight mob: it's a satire on how or what people will do in mobs, that's
ending up doing or saying stupid things, also, looks over 40 years change can
change people
-It was michaels movie, he's the protagonist to show how dangerous he is
-Tommy doyle was the antagonist of sum sort, but an anti-villain, he wants to
sooo badly get rid of evil but barley cares about damn near anything else besides
saving laurie like she did in 1978
-Michael isn't a full on human, no mortal man can get up from the beating he took
-Instead of thinking david gordon green had an agenda or message, ya just chalk
it up to nobody is truly safe, old, young, gay, straight, first responders, children,
legacy characters, mobs, or anybody innocent (besides babies)
-It's the middle chapter of a trilogy
It's personally my favorite sequel, but has the perfect myers & second best mask,
however I just want to be civilized in the comment section with what u think mates 🔪👍
I haven’t seen this movie yet but after feeling underwhelmed by Halloween 2018, I couldn’t say no to that thumbnail of apathetic Dan
Acting was bad. Not a good movie
I found the scenes without Michael Myers almost unwatchable and the character of Tommy completely unbearable
If anything the Michael scenes are the best part of the movie that make it even remotely entertaining😂
One of the parts that made me scratch my head was when Allison's boyfriend's dad is talking about his friendship with her father.
Like those kids had been dating well before the events happened so how did they not know the father's were friends 🤔 at some point in time.
The dad told a story about doing drugs with that kids father in the 2018 film. Maybe she just wanted to hear a story about her dad.
@@ryanmatthews7405 I'll need to watch the 2018 film again. I only saw it once and obviously forgot lol. I appreciate it 😊.
I'm a big fan of the 2018 movie but I see Halloween Kills as a massive let down.
This truly was the worst Halloween movie since Resurrection and the most disappointing experience I've had this year at the movies.
Yeah, but Resurrection has something that Kills does not, and that is Busta Rhymes saying all of the Busta Rhymes things and at least giving me something to chuckle at
If nothing else, It did introduce me to Ghost.
Good ass band. Check out the Meliora and Prequelle albums, those are my favorite along with Square Hammer from the Popestar EP
They were replicating the action movie strategy of attacking someone one at a time and hoping for the best. It was goofy.
Love your review. It sums up my thoughts perfectly.
The kills made this enjoyable , but those town people were killing me. Can’t wait for the next one in the series
Time to settle in and enjoy a good long review
Hilarious that the actor who played Little John was the security guard who gets crushed in that Austin Powers scene you mentioned!
Dan just talking about the poor design of the hospital and "hanging brain" for a few minutes is hilarious.
I think they mean this ends tonight because all three movies are on the same Halloween night. So it's all the same tonight in the story.
It may not end tonight in terms of the real world experience of when you watched the film, but it likely will end tonight in the timeline of the story given that all 3 movies seem like they will happen over 1 24 hour (approximately) period.
Dan your loomis impression killed me😂😂 this movie was such a disaster and this review was amazing
As someone who hasn’t really like a single Halloween film, the 2018 film surprised me with how much I loved it, and I was really looking forward to Kills.
So I was disappointed during the film to see the writing for the characters take a nosedive. Suddenly every is the same, spewing the same lines over and over.
*Evil Dies tonight*
*For forty year, he’s haunted this town, and tonight… we end it*
*It needs to die, and I’m the one who’s going to kill it*
The over abundance of new characters, and ones from the 78 film really do make the movie very convoluted and uneven where the 2018 film had simplicity.
One odd mixed-positive I found on my 2nd viewing, was something that wasn’t really present in the last film, but has been in previous Halloween films:
The hilarious moments of stupidity.
Whether it’s Michael kicking the girl and making her shoot herself,
Nurse Chambers shooting out all the windows of the car and making that dumb noise before Michael kills her,
or Michael obnoxiously stabbing the dead guy over and over to see which knife works best.
And it only gets more insane the longer you think about it
OMG Dan, 100% agree with you. Your thoughts are my thoughts! LOL
