I think The Stranger is a HUGELY underrated song. Billy's whistling skills are phenomenal.
When he demo'd that song to his manager, the whistling was intended to be a stand-in for a yet undetermined instrument. His manager told him to keep the whistling as is, claiming that the whistler was indeed "the stranger". It worked brilliantly, of course. :)

A top 10, or even a top 20 list couldn't even scratch the surface of Billy's catalog. To be honest I think he is one of the few artists out there that has a relatively flawless discography. I have listened to all of his studio albums and then some, and there was not a single song I didn't like. Granted, I liked some songs more than others, but there weren't any songs that I wanted to skip over after hearing.
But if I had to pick a few songs for this list (that weren't in this video), I'd pick I Go To Extremes, Prelude/Angry Young Man, Miami 2017, The Entertainer, and No Man's Land...the list could go on and on though....
Heck yea! I Go To Extremes is not only my favorite Billy Joel song, but my favorite song of all time :D
My main gripe with his discography: “You're my castle, you're my cabin
And my instant PLEASURE DOME”

Absolutely!! I have been his fan since 1977 and only recently completed my collection of his recordings... So many MARVELOUS songs that I NEVER HEARD BEFORE!! Some are definitely more favored, but all are actually wonderful!!

It means a palace traditionally but its contemporary use is a place for recreation/relaxation.

It's so weird, the first two songs that pop in my mind when thinking about Billy Joel are Piano Man and Goodnight Saigon. To not see the latter in this top 10 really astounds me, but after research it turns out that it just happened to be a number 1 hit in my country (the Netherlands), and not at all in the US. Just never realized that.

I don't think I'll ever meet a Billy Joel song I don't like, so this list could go on for ever. He definitely hasn't lived the most "pure" life, but all those crazy situations of his life are what lead to his absolute genius song writing.
Still I wish more of his more thoughtful and deep songs made it on the Top 10.
Goodnight Saigon is probably his most gut-wrenchingly emotional song ever. Coming out of a time when the music industry was focused on the anti-war effort, but often joined in on the distrust of the soldiers who fought in it this song really found a way to touch upon the experience of that terrible war through the eyes of a soldier. It wasn't accusatory in any way, rather realize the humanity of those men who served.
The chorus "and We Will All Go Down Together" can be quite a tear-jerker.
And So It Goes was described by Joel as his favorite song that "never took off," Its far slower and less energetic than some of his songs, but intensely heartfelt and nostalgic and that is often when he was at his best. I think the entire Storm Front album is incredible underrated.
And I really can't believe Miami 2017 (Lights Go Out On Broadway) didn't make it on. Its fascinatingly insightful and terrible ominous at the same time. I think it has always provided the perfect opposite to pair with New York State of Mind.
Every single one of these songs is unique. He has such a goddamn amazing voice, he could sing anything. Sounds more perfect than anything a computer could do.
Movin out Anthonys Song should of at least been mentioned. It is one of his best. However this was a pretty good list.

I took my mom to see Billy Joel on her birthday this year here in Memphis because he's one of her favorite artists ever. (which is where he actually got his start, playing at Lafayette's Music Room). Best concert every. He played for three hours and played a lot of his stuff, some Elvis, some Led Zeppelin (I know right?!)a dn the song Memphis, TN by Johnny Rivers. I sang every word of every song for the whole show. Couldn't talk the next day.

It’s not secret that he’s an amazing musician but I’ve always felt that his singing voice was severely underrated.
Ya I agree with you, I mean I can understand why it is underrated and honestly I kind of underrated it at times. I think what really started making me appreciate it was when I started playing his songs on piano and trying to sing with them and had a lot of trouble. That happens to me a lot where the people who you think of as amazing vocalists I actually have no trouble singing their songs and then someone like billy you realize is actually kind of tough he has a lot more range than you think

I think even a list of Top 20 Billy Joel songs would leave out a ton of good ones. I have almost 20 Billy Joel albums on my iTunes, which equals almost 200 songs. Once you remove the repeats that come on live albums and "Greatest Hits" albums, you still have a ton left over. Not to mention, I think every single song is good. Granted, I probably haven't listened to all of them, but I haven't heard a bad one yet.

Billy Joel was 34 years old when Uptown Girl was released. Elle Macpherson, who was his ex in '83, was 19 years old. Hero.
This list is getting me in such a Billy Joel mood again :) LOVE him. Scenes From an Italian Restaurant is especially one of my all time favorites! But sooo many of his songs are just such classics and amazing. Billy Joel and Elton John, man... amazing music to have grown up on, for sure!
