I got the same tank and had hard time starting the locking ring. The anti- chafing material was just tar roofing material? I ended up using a rubber flashing material that I cut into strips, they were self sticking. I used the old straps instead of the cheap ones in the kit.
Just a tip, but you can get a silicone roll of drawer liner from almost any store for cheap cut strips and put them under tank hangers. Added protecton and anti vibe. Keep up the good work!!
lol me too. I'm hoping to be working on the underbody within the next month and might just have to make a wooden one as the actual rotisseries are crazy expensive.
Really great stuff, please keep all of this ‘Firebird education’ channel coming, really enjoy following and getting ready for a new floor in my own 68 convertible.
I need to tear it down a bit more to understand the full scale of it, it will need new inner rockers as well, so reallly enjoyed the video with taking coupe inners and using for convertible.
Sounds like you are on the right track. The inner rocker repair is a very inexpensive repair and fairly simple. Plus way less expensive then the convertible complete rockers. Keep this in The only downside is it is a thinner gauge metal then what the factory used but it is much thicker and stronger then a rusted out inner rocker.
Welding is totally possible to learn. Heck my first car I used flux core wire and I absolutely sucked at it. It was awful. I used a lot more body filler to smooth it out. Time and practice will get you there. Setting the welder right helps too. Practice on scraps first then go for it. What kind of welder do you have? Of course Good luck and if I can help let me know
Great work Jon. Did the same thing to my 69 Camaro while it was still on rotissary. My sending unit looked same. Only problem is it doesnt read correct fuel level. When tank is full, the gage reads about 3/4 full. Oh well, guess i can live with it. Thanks for sharing.
Thats cool, having the car on its side is a huge time and back saver. I regret not testing mine before installing it. Empty is zero ohm and full is 90 ohms. And then a nice even sweep between. Not sure why I didn’t
man, you work fast. I think a trace amount of vaseline on the rubber o-ring would have allowed the lock ring to seat easier? Car is looking great! Love working on clean freshly painted stuff!🙂
No complaints with the finished results. Just a lot more struggle with the sending unit install then normal. Guessing the stamping was a bit off maybe but nonetheless I did get it assembled and working.
I can’t say for certain on a Grand Prix but Firebird and gto when they have a return line it’s 1/4” it’s a safe assumption if a 400 engine in those cars work fine with 1/4” it should also work on a grand prix
Great Video and great tips for installing a fuel system. I actually bought my tank 2 days ago. Where did you get your kit through? Im debating between pre fab lines and hand making my lines. I dont know how pre fab will work with my subframe connectors. Have a great Thanksgiving and cant wait to see the Great Pumpkin back on its wheels.
If things are still as originally designed they have a track they slide out of that is spring loaded. With nuts removed and tank straps out of the way the carriage bolt should slide towards the drivers side and then release
Another great video. I need to buy a tank for my 68 but I wasn’t sure which one to get, with or without return line. Does yours not have a return? I got my car with everything already stripped off so wasn’t sure what it had from the factory. Thanks!
This car did not have a return line. Typically factory A/C cars and 400 equipped had a return line. In addition V8 cars had 3/8” lines and 6cyl had 5/16 as well.
@@VinylVillageGarage That’s what I was figuring but wanted to make sure. These Pontiac’s are new to me so just like to make sure I’m getting the right stuff. Thanks again man!
I’ll be dipped! That’s too funny.
Hey just sharing some love. I didn’t forget who all inspired me to do this.
Had the same problem getting sending unit in..had to bend tabs twice, what a pain.
The challenges of reproduction parts I suppose

That rotisserie sure does make that a lot easier!
I agree total back saver and much easier

Not just like on top the tank but also on the straps. Got it thanks for sharing.
I used Damplifier pro (Dynomate product) on the bottom of the trunk under the tank. its a nice way to reduce the noise and also not be seen.
I need one of those car fliper over thingys!!!
lol me too. I'm hoping to be working on the underbody within the next month and might just have to make a wooden one as the actual rotisseries are crazy expensive.
Hey guys you can make your own, i will be done with mine hopefully this weekend, of course you can always borrow it too. 😎
Another great video, man it really is looking great !
Thanks it’s really coming together, it’s nice to be on the downhill side too.
Looking really nice underneath.👍
Appreciate that, I like the clean look.

Cool project! Are you doing the one piece floor pan?

@@VinylVillageGarage Indeed and a a little less dramatic with the inner as well! I’ll need some help for sure as I’m no good with a welder!

Another great video. You sure love those old "birds". I need to get back to my 69 convert.
Definitely have to finish the convertible, good luck! Gotta save them birds
Brother that car is looking sweet
Thanks pal. It’s gona be Warm enough to play in the garage this weekend. Hope to make some good progress
Good job as always!
Appreciate that. Hope to have the subframe back on the car this weekend
Oh good! More video content! 👍
Yup, and closer to having a car that tolls again!!

Yes not a bad idea, also buying the cheapest tank possible doesn’t help either, but it sure looks nice.
You didn’t seem to have any complaints that I was aware of- anything after the fact? Fuel line clips?
No complaints with the finished results. Just a lot more struggle with the sending unit install then normal. Guessing the stamping was a bit off maybe but nonetheless I did get it assembled and working.
Have a 68 Grand Prix , having trouble finding fuel line size for the return line ? Any clue by chance ?

Prebent might work depends on what brand subframe connectors you have. You have an awesome thanksgiving too.
Not to be a wet blanket on the install, but did you think about testing the sender before installing it?
Lol. Nope probably should have, because new doesn’t mean not broken.
Keep up the great videos!
What kind of body bushings do you plan to use between sub frame, rubber or poly?
Thanks! On this one standard rubber bushings.
how long did it take to build your body tilt tool
Engineering and drawing the plans 4 hours. Actual fabrication about 4
More hours.
How do you remove the old carriage bolts?
If things are still as originally designed they have a track they slide out of that is spring loaded. With nuts removed and tank straps out of the way the carriage bolt should slide towards the drivers side and then release

No prob. 😎
Where did you get the tank from? I just recently re-inherited the 69 I drove in high school and it needs a new tank and lines.
That is cool To get back your old car!! This tank I think came from JC Whitney,
There is several places online you can get a tank from fortunately
@@VinylVillageGarage Thank you for replying! I'll send you pictures :)
