  • This video is about tips and tricks for using the Big Muff Pi guitar pedal made by EHX. This pedal sounds great by itself but can become lost once you put it with other instruments. Let's fix that!

The low dark tone on this is why it’s so good with bass, imho… guaranteed you can get some of the darkest bass tones ever with this thing. As a fan of Jungle/Drum n Bass…. Yeah… it’s that level dark. So good.

I been embracing the Muff for for over 25 years, and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it. I also perform mostly solo, so maybe adding cymbals (or a whole band) into the mix might change my opinion.

Tried and true! It’s a beautiful monster. Rock on!

I can vouch for this model specifically. 1) it looks the coolest of any big muff (imho). 2) something about the knobs and “fast” pots I just like… maybe it’s the contrast between how fat it is and how delicate the movements of the knobs must be… a benefit of these “fast pots” is that during long feedback or notes, you can actually mess with the controls over time like it’s a wah wah or something. This actually lends itself to some really interesting results if you’re running anything else besides a guitar (I used it with a Danelectro Longhorn bass for many years, and a Roland TR-606 drum machine as well) and the knobs on this model actually feel more like a DJ mixer than an FX pedal. But back to the sound. The sound on this is a ONE AND ONLY. Like a good pizza spot.

Some quick research reveals that the volume circuit on this “Black Russian” Big Muff is indeed not linear but logarithmic!! Explains so much.

Yeah, each version of the big muffs has its own tiny quirks. I remember when everyone hated the version with OpAmps and now those are popular.
