People can bitch about resellers until they are blue in the face, but the reality is that collectors are the worst thing for collectors. Seriously. The act of collecting retro games is the act of stripping the supply of retro games from the market. Shelf collecting is the biggest reason why prices keep rising. I've got games in my collection that I bought 20 years ago. That's games that have been out of circulation for 2 decades, and I haven't played them in just as long. That's assuming I ever even played them. We sit around joking about unachievable backlogs, and there's so so many people where that's just the truth of the matter. A lot, if not the majority, of retro "collectors" have more games than they have remaining hours of life to play. The existence of the hobby itself makes the hobby expensive. If everybody just bought games, played them, and them immediately flipped them back out into the world, they would all be worthless.

@@BurnTheFlag Yeah I’m not really fond of the people who make videos and have 5,000 games in the background either, they’re just hoarding also… when an item isn’t in print anymore it’s just fair game who gets what’s left I guess. I’m just at the digital only point for older games…

The coronavirus lockdown changed everything. At least here in the UK.
Most people in the UK were at home for months and needed new hobbies. Clips of retro video games started circulating on apps like TikTok, which in theory got a lot of people into buying retro video games again.
The retro video game scene was very niche pre 2020. But the massive increase in popularity for the hobby has made prices increase too. More people buying, more demand which means higher prices.
I’ve been collecting most of my life. However, I do not find it fun anymore. Gone are the days of finding steals out in the wild, because now everybody knows how much these games are worth.
I may be way off with this take. But this is definitely how I see it.

I agree with you 100%. We will get a cooling off time for retro games once the economy resets (doesn't matter who gets elected). This time will be the best time to buy the rare and most expensive games, due to sell offs. Once the economy stabilizes and digital era takes over, physical media will shoot up in price. Plus future generations becoming Nostalgic (PS3, XBOX 360, WiiU era) will make those games in your video even more expensive. Anything that's not available digitally will become super expensive...

Physical games, in general, are retaining their value. I'm seeing some Switch games not dropping in price after being out for a while.
There seems to be rush to grab as much Switch games as possible before the digital take-over.
Ace Attorney has gotten remasters for Switch. But, the sprite work and sound design for DS versions are nostalgic. So, the DS games are still very valuable.
Plus, carts in systems like Switch and DS seem to be more reliable than discs. They're going to be around a lot longer than discs. So, people are already speculating their value.

I don’t think the market will crash but we are in a market correction. I think things will be calm for awhile until the next generation of consoles will come out that is digital only and that might make people run back to the older stuff because physical. Or it could go the other way and people have accepted that they don’t need to hoard all of these games and emulation, flash carts, and ODE’s are just as good and more accessible.

It was annoying plus there are still songs like Deep Cover that have never been on streaming services. Interesting video, in the UK it's interesting watching CEX the UK chain similar to GameStop. Prices have been going up across the board, gen 7 if it's not a heavily re-released title the price is up, there are still good deals on lesser known titles but the floors raised a bit, I think there could be adjustments as there's a lot when I go in there I will avoid picking up as it's too expensive for what it is like the sonic all star racing £6 on all systems - is it really selling on all systems for that? Since there's so many games like that to go with on the system that are half decent but not something Im persuaded to pay out for, I will feel it's too much to go over £5 as it adds up quickly. so I think with more common or titles that are neich but have plenty of copies I think the price could either be the same or go down. If you're okay with no manual it's possible to still get deals on ps1 games, I go by system on the website and sort by price from low and picked up some games way bellow eBay price last year. It is expensive to collect anyhow, maybe the occasional bargain on games that aren't well known on PS2 and the few sega PS3 games are super cheap xD. A caveat with ps1 games is you've got to be prepared for a shotgun approach ordering online as CEX is notorious for cancelling orders, it has a lot of stock thats registered but when they go ti dispatch it, it has something missing meaning they can't use it for the online sale, so it's hit and miss sometimes.

I was a game dealer for over a decade, and started winding my business down a few years ago because sales volumes fell off a cliff. My sales came to a screeching halt back in 2019 and never really recovered. I was stuck sitting on a humongous inventory of thousands of games I could not sell. The sad reality is physical media is on its deathbed, video games included. There's 2 things destroying the classic games market. The first being the advent of emulation, and the 2nd being a higher availability of games thru digital platforms. There are 2 types of gamers, the collectors, and then theres the casual gamers who don't care to collect and just want to play games. The casual gamers aren't going to pay for a game they can otherwise play for free. Its not going to be 10 or 15 years from now when these games become digital only, we are already there. Almost every major console has now been emulated to some degree.
Despite the decline in sales, many prices of rarer, more sought after classic titles have held their prices very steady, while the more common titles have fallen off a cliff. Something to note about those older consoles is that over time, less and less people have them. How many American households still have a working NES today? Not many. PS2 games are a hard sell too because they are so well emulated now that no one wants or needs to buy them anymore. I had to sell off thousands of PS2 titles for bargain bin prices just to get rid of them.
Over time, more and more of these consoles are going to disappear from American households, and all but the rarest of titles will essentially become paperweights.

How many of those prices are real though? I constantly see overpriced games online. This is the reason I rarely buy physical games anymore. There are game dealers who price gouge, they also don't make any sales. If someone else has the same game for cheaper, which are you going to buy?
Likewise, game dealers typically operate on paper thin margins. Those dealers also have operating costs, and they are often enormous. Its the whole reason I got out of the business, I couldn't turn a profit at all anymore.
