I don't see reselling video games being a viable source of income for most people. Even game stores that sell other things like cards, toys, and snacks are struggling. There may be outliers, but my advice for the general public? Don't quit your day job.

Too many remasters from the 7th generation that pollinated to the 8th/9th gen systems decrease the resell value. People can easily buy $25-$50 wii system, $20 usb and $20 sd card and just homebrew and download roms files.
I don't think there's going to be enough new buyers to support the retro game market. Younger gamers want the newest game all their friends are playing, while most older gamers have already obtained their desired classics. I could see a beginner merchant buying 11 copies of a "decent game" they would want for their own collection (from Limited Run Games), keep one, and slowly sell the other ten over time (thus making the kept copy a free game). I enjoyed listening to this topic of discussion, very informing.
I'm going to repeat myself, in time where every title has remaster/remake or is going to have remaster/remake most profitable option is to collect Switch, PS4 games (Ps5/Switch 2 also) and only versions that having everything on disk/cartrige GOTY editions, Complete Editions etc. Companies like Limited Run are going to remaster EVERYTHING, it's just matter of time when they take Kuon, Rule of Rose, Godzilla titles under their hands, in 10 years from now no one from todays teenagers will care about some ps2, ps3 titles, like today we don't care about some Commodore/Amiga/Atari titles. My advice is to collect modern COMPLETE titles and then able to sell them in the near future. Oh another thing is, people every year tend to be more lazy etc, so even today most guys dont want to deal with big CRT's and cables anymore, portable/hybrids are the future (portable with ability to connect to bigger display), Switch, Steam Deck, Nitro, Legion Go etc, without cables, portable, eazy and quick.
Excellent comment. I do believe physical media in general will get more scarce due to online services and also getting games that are licensed cuz usually the license runs out or doesn't get renewed. Certain blu-rays or DVDs that aren't on any streaming services and are out of print.

I sold a good bit on Mercari during that time and I can say 100% that the demand is not there anymore. Everything but the cream of the crop (pokemon, etc) is 'sitting on the shelves' much, much longer nowadays. With Chase and Phoenix funneling all that inventory to Amazon, it's only a matter of time before Amazon holds the majority of the inventory then will become the price-maker. It's really sad to see, but those guys are building business and chasing profits and the market's diversity of sellers is the sacrifice for their success.

Selling on Amazon is not like other e-commerce platforms because they skew heavily to established businesses with large quantities of inventory. Not just one of each game but 10-20 copies of every game. The gating process has gotten more and more strict because of the copious amounts of ‘fraud’ and fake product. It’s to protect the consumer. It can be done over time but it’s not a ready set go platform. So yes in order to be setup for the holidays you would’ve been better off starting in summer.
It's the competition. There's just too many people buying and selling at like a 10% profit margin which isn't even worth it. Hell even grandma's don't want to sell video games cheap. In most hobbies it better to just enjoy the product and only buy what you can. Consider it lost money on a passion. Once you have massive knowledge, then it is worth making a business out of it.
I will hate resellers whole stop and im not talkin bout someone who buys a bulk and sells off things they dont want/need, im talking bout people who will go out and just buy stack after stack of games, its inflated what people think games are worth, literally had a woman told me she saw on youtube her n64 games are worth alot so her selling them at 30 a piece was a bargin. (they were all sports games) game collecting used to be a fun hobby, but at some point it got..corporatized? Maybe lacking for a better term
i'm primarily a 360 collector - but , i'm open to buying selling and trading for any of the others too why not might as well just an achievement hunter personally

When I sold a bunch of my games to "cut the fat" I found that bundles did better than single games.
