The terminal and thus linkspan and pontoon is designed for all the Steam Packet vessels which are all stern loading. Manannan beam 26m, centre line 13m Ben My Chree beam 23.4m, centre line 11.7m Manannan beam 26m, centre line 13m. So maybe the link span not being parallel to the dock side is to align with a vessel centre line that fits all 3 vessels. Also hence large width of the pontoon to suit all the vessels loading ramps which are nearly 2 lanes wide. On a high spring tide, I would not expect the water to be above the dock side, otherwise why build there, but is it a problem if the top of the pontoon deck is higher than the dockside - should not be a problem if designed ok. Plenty of big rectangular rubber fending blocks along the dock side.
Still a lot of work to do before the linkspan is functional. Completion is currently estimated as March next year. But why is the terminal building so big?
Great video Paul. Just wondering why the link span is diagonal with the floating pontoon. It's going to be a nightmare when there is full blown Gale on the Mersey. That pontoon will be swaying badly. On 30ft+ spring tides, the pontoon will sit higher than the sure-side?
I have no answers to why the link span is off set. But do know that it would not sway on the tide flow. At the bottom end, where the pontoon is next to the Dock wall is a circular shaft which the spanset/pontoon lift and fall on the tide. So it's fixed from swaying side to side, but go up and down.
Quite an impressive looking, building, really hoped that, along with the new ferry, this would herald a return to Liverpool being their main route but hearing that the new terminal can't be used for freight or at night suppers any hope of that, sounds about as useful as your proverbial chocolate teapot,a much delayed & many times over budget tea pot to make things worse!😕😕
Still can't figure the way artics (HGVs) are going to navigate to get onto the Ferry? the roads don't seem wide enough, do the HGVs go thru by the BOOTHS/Customs.or go straight onto the ramp?, and how do foot passengers get there?...it's gonna be chocker around there when the TTs on.
