I have a question that runs in my head all time. I’ve had some researches but unfortunately I couldn’t find any satisfying answer on the internet. You’re one of the fews that always care about his fans so I decided to ask you, I hope you answer my questions again!
You made demonstrations and review videos about the most premium grade oil colors like Rublev and Michael Harding. As these companies claimed and you said in your videos, one of the most significant difference between their paints and the other artist quality oil paint manifactures is the pigment concentration. Premium grade oil manifacturers, almost never, use any extender except oil or sometimes they use minimum proportions of binder or extender if it is needed.
Does that mean most common brands like W&N and Royal Talens cheating people when they introduce their paints to people as ‘highest quality paint’? If they add extenders to artist quality oil paints like they do with student grade oil paints, shouldn’t they specify the other ingridients (with the percentage) besides oil and pigments itself? I mean who wants to pay more if they can buy $2 student grade paint with 50% extender while artist grade paints cost 5 times more and only contains half amount of student grade’s extenders?
These are mostly moral questions, but the point is: how can we know the specific ingridients of oil paint we bought? I might be a little suspicious about big companies, you know ._.
Thanks for a great question! Unfortunately, unlike food products, there is no law requiring a paint company to specify all the ingredients they use. I don't know of any solid resource to look up what is used in specific brands. The tubes themselves will usually list the pigment and the type of oil used, but that's it. You are correct that the Artist's Grade paints will have some extenders in them, but not nearly as much as the student grade. The leap from Artist grade to Premium grade is much smaller. Depending on how you paint, you can actually end up saving money in the long term with artist grade paint since you don't have to use as much of it. There really isn't a right or wrong answer...I would say buy the best you can afford and don't worry about it too much. As long as you go for a good quality student grade like Winton or Gamblin 1980, you should be OK. For a well priced artist grade line, take a look at Utrecht or Lukas 1862 if you can get them where you are. Hope that helps!
Walcott Fine Art thank you very much! That’s was the most detailed answer I got so far. To be honest I’m surprised when I find out nobody asked these questions before in the internet. There is literally no detailed information about extenders of oil paint. Anyway, I found the answer, thanks a lot again good sir! :)
I just started to use W&N, Rembrandt, Mussini and some LeFranc & Bourgeios artist quality oil colors in my palette and I completely switched to high grade artists’ paints although you know, I wanted to be sure. I’m pretty satisfied with the quality of them, they are much better than student grade paints and I’ve already fallen in love with them. I think it is too late for me to turn back to lower grade paint :P

I actually mix that medium myself. It's 1/3 linseed oil, 1/3 turpentine and 1/3 damar varnish. Thanks for watching!

@@walcottfineart5088 it's funny to me, in a sculpture class i took, there is a study where you make an actual size model of a bell pepper. i guess their odd form makes them a great subject for study in 2d and 3d
