Welcome to another tools & help video, featuring the drum-tec electronic drum splitters!
If you are running a Roland TD-17, TD-15 or TD-11 sound module f.e., you might run short of trigger inputs rather quickly when starting to expand your kit with more cymbals and/or tom pads.
The drum-tec electronic drum splitters allow you to split a dual zone / stereo trigger input into two single zone / mono inputs, to then connect 2 pads (single zone functionality) instead of one. The procedure of splitting a tom channel into two is shown & explained in the video.
We have used two splitters finally to expand a drum-tec Jam TD-17 kit to a total of 5 toms & 4 cymbals, as shown in the drumming section of the video.
You can find the splitter cables & all other components in our online shop:

I have a dream that one day I will play a kit like this. I hope, one day, I will have the opportunity to own a drum tec kit... 😍
TD 17 is a master shift. You are addressing the limitations. I doff my cap! 😎
Finally i purchase the cables and can't wait to get it asap on mt TD15 .i want to add one more pad and an extra cymbal.
I've been searching for this kind of video for a long time. Now I know how to expand my roland td17.Thanks!
Now you guys are onto something! Splitters are life haha
I want to get this setup ASAP! Puttin' the set like Weckl and perfection!
Yeah! :)
Wouldn't recommend splitting into two toms though as when you would eventually hit both at the same time one won't trigger. (can't trigger both zones at once)
Split toms rim zone into a cymbal.
SiREN-DRUMS if you are gonna split toms make sure they’re as far apart as possible
Afflicted15 drummers hit two toms at once you know on purpose not accident from being too close. That’s why you split them with Tom and crash
tyler hill ik I meant like if you’re splitting toms make it like Tom 1 and Tom 4 instead of Tom 3 and Tom 4
@@becausedrumgeek8817 ok I re-checked & you are right that playing the two toms EXACTLY at once won´t work. What works is if I play splitted toms 3/4 with a slight flam starting from the right hand on tom 4, not the other way around though. So the best suggestion would be to keep splitted tom pads as far away from each other as possible (f.e. tom 1 and tom 4), so you don´t feel the need to play them at exactly the same time. Sorry for the confusion, what I was having in memory was that those slightly flammed strokes on two toms work. Kind regards!
drumtecTV Have you tried a basic splitter with the TD-17? I ask because I am using a separate TD-3 to trigger the TD-17 Tom rims. I have the TD-17 Tom rims set to a 4th Tom, a 5th Tom and a crash. They can play simultaneously with their associated Tom. The crash even has Choke working. It seems to work better via MIDI than splitting the triggers. I am wondering if the resistor in the splitter is not needed with the TD-17. I have to route the TD-3 into cubase then out to the TD-17 via USB. A Kenton USB Host could make that connection directly but it is cost prohibitive.
I have a td17 kvxs, wish it had a 4th tom, didn't even know it was possible.
This dude is unreal. Listen to that , holy god, sick
Thank you so much Chris! :)
WOW!!!
I may just buy from Drum-Tec and call it a day!!! :)
Thanks Elias :)
Endlich macht ihr was interessantes mit der TD17 😉
Awesome drum kit and enjoyed the drumming. Great video
Thank you very much! :)
I love watching you play as you are very talented. You make difficult things look very easy. Have you taken many lessons or are you self taught?
Thank you very much! Well, altogether it has been 28 years of drumming now, including a jazz/pop music diploma of the Mainz music college :) so drumming has been my profession for many years now. Kind regards!
Oh i must have it to add more roland cymbal to my td 15 ...
you are awesome drum tec
Hey Mickey, the splitters do work with Roland cymbal pads, but not quite as well as with dual zone pads. Split cymbal pads will not provide quite the full dynamic spectrum (only the higher velocities work well). Kind regards!
Nice ghost notes. Both playing and sound
Thank you! :)
This drummer is so freakin awesome
Thank you very much! :)
I also expanded my TD 17 KVX with drumsplitter but I have a problem with the threshold of the pads connected to the rim. Even if the threshold is set to 0 in the menu, the pad connected to the rim simply does not take light strokes. The same pad attached to the head works fine. Do you have any advice on how to solve this?
Hi Michal, please get in touch through experts@drum-tec.de concerning your question if you like. Kind regards!
Damn great drummer here. And the kit sounds awesome!
Thank you Russell! :)
Will the splitter work for a 3 zone Roland ride cymbal? I have 1 extra output jack coming from my Roland drum module. It contains the ride cymbal sounds. I want to buy a Roland Ride Cymbal and connect it to that output jack, but the problem is that I need 2 output jacks from my module to gain the 3 zone functionality of the cymbal...
Hi, generally speaking you can only have to zones per stereo cable. So in any case you'll need a second one for another zone/trigger. Please get in touch through service@drum-tec.de for further detail/help! Kind regards
I purchased a similar product from an Amazon seller and it doesn't seem to include the 'extra internal component' needed to properly split the signal. I'm trying to split the aux signal (tom) from my TD17 with an added CY5 hi hat. No matter what I try in the settings, I continue to hear both the tom and cymbal in both. And yes, I did uncheck the H&R box. I would love any additional input from anyone here. FYI, the cable does NOT have the rim/head designation labeled as yours do. I will purchase from you if needed.
that td 17 kit looks more detailed than i remember
Now if only Roland would make a kit between the TD17/25 and the TD50 that had multi outs.....
I need that module. The td50 is way to expensive for me and I play a very small kit. I love my td25 but the lack of individual outs at gigs is a big problem.
You´re absolutely right Shawn, let´s hope for a TD-27 or TD-35,78 in the near future ;-) would be great to have a module in the size of a TD-12 with contemporary sounds & features! Kind regards
@@Tom-sd2vi Here is a workaround that might make your soundman a little happier: On your playing-out kits, pan all of the "high" drums like your snare, cymbals, hi-hat and maybe the highest tom full left, and then all of the "low" drums full right. This will give your soundman two channels where he can at least make some broad EQ decisions like high-passing the left side so there isn't a lot of unnecessary rumble in the PA. Not perfect, obviously, but I've used it in clubs and the FOH guys like it better than having to do a full-range mix on the entire kit. You could also pan everything left except the kick and floor toms, which is the same idea but lets your soundman really optimize the kick sound for dance clubs.
@@jeffreyschwartz7901 Thanks for the effort, I already use the left and rights as 2 independent outputs. Cheers!

There are quite a few different sets available. Which model is featured here? Do the models differ mostly in the shells themselves, or is response time better on the pro version, etc?
Hi Adam, the kit in the video demo is a drum-tec jam series electronic drum kit, hooked up to a Roland TD-17 sound module & Roland e-cymbals. Check out the video from 1:40, you can find more product info on the kit here:
www.drum-tec.com/sets/drum-tec-jam
The drum-tec Jam, diabolo & pro series have different trigger systems and different sizes/shells/finishes. You can find a basic comparison over here:

For any further questions, please don´t hesitate to get in touch through info@drum-tec.de!
Does anyone know if a "RDB" (ride bell) jack on the TD-17's cable snake can be used for an additional crash?
I tried it with a CY-5, but it's not triggering anything.
Does that part of the cable only work with a three zone Roland ride?
Same here. Haven't found any answer anywhere so far...
Awesome! Does this work with a Roland TM 6 Pro?
Amazing drummer!
Thank you very much! :)
That’s great!
But I don’t understand mean that AUX.
What did connect to pad? 6 inches Tom right?
And the splitter into AUX has two jacks. How was the another side? nothing connect?
And I wanna use 4Toms and 5symbals. Can it?

Nice drumming. Nice kit :)
Thanks Gerald! :)
What kind of cable shld the 2 cables be connect to the splitter female? TS or TRS or it doesnt matter?
Hi Ralf, If I wanted to split a splash cymbal and a drum-tec trigger tube into the Aux jack, I suppose it would be best to use the other (male) splitter?
Hi, the splitters work best in combination with tom pads. They don´t provide the full dynamic range when used with cymbal pads. But yes, when splitting the aux you would need this one:

I’m trying to use a splitter cable for my Roland SPD-SX for 2 different triggers going into one input. Would this cable work in that circumstance?
Please get in touch throug experts@drum-tec.de regarding this question if you like. Kind regards!
Hi i want to use the rim of my tom 2 for china cymbal is it possible? Will it copy both the sound of the head and rim of tom 2? And what type of splitter do i need for this? Thank you
@drumtecTV Hi,
so as I understand - if I'd split one crash cable into two (for two cymbals) then I will loose the ability to get sound from the cymbal's head or rim?
Hi Hazio, the splitters work best with dual piezo pads, so as shown in the video you can split toms getting 2 single zone toms out of one dual zone tom input & use free dual zone inputs for your cymbals. For more questions please get in touch through service@drum-tec.de! Kind regards
Thanks for the video,
I'm trying to figure out 1 thing :
If we're splitting the signal, the splitted cables (for eg. tom4 & cymbal 4) don't need to be TRS , correct ?
(Since each of them is just carrying just its respective mono signal, a couple of basic TS jack 6.3mm cables will suffice. do you confirm ?)
Thanks again.

Will this work with ATV aDrums?
think its handy to be able to add extra triggers , but its at a sacrifice of loosing some nice features such as rim shots .. low cost solution .. a better long term solution would to add a second module via midi ..
Where are you getting the kits from? are you using VSTs into a computer or are they physically on the module?

Lets say you want to split 2 cymbals would both still be able to be choked? Kinda pointless being able to have 2 separate zones on a crash.
Generally speaking, splitting does not work too well with cymbal pads. We suggest to rather split tom pad channels & use the free dual channels for your cymbals. For more detailled info, please get in touch through info@drum-tec.de! Kind regards
thanks for this....when assigning the splitter to the Rim is it required to adjust sensitivity etc or does i work as per the video without needing to make adjustments. This is for TD50. Thank you.
Hi Jean Claude, for any technical info please get in touch through info@drum-tec.de, unfortunately I don´t remember all setup details from the video shoot :) kind regards!

Problem is I find it hard to actually split anything... You can split the Tom to a crash, but then the crash looses the ability to choke and only has 1 zone... You can split toms to other toms, but you can't hit them at the same time... These systems were simply not designed for ease of use in getting more out of the system than what they give you.
Hi would you make turtorial how to add additional cymbal i.e. splash or china? thanks a lot
Hi, the splitters don´t work too well on cymbal pads, because those have other triggers/switches. So preferably you should split tom pads & use regular dual zone inputs for the cymbal pads to have best possible playability. Kind regards!
@@drumtecTV Thank you for answer. How that splitter affect playability on tom pad?
@@pickap It splits head & rim into two head zones for two tom pads. Playability is the same as for the head zone without the splitter, you just lose the dual zone functionality obviously. Kind regards!
@@drumtecTV Thank you for answer. Now i think i'll give it a try! Regards
@@drumtecTV has splitted tom got still active rim? and after accidentaly hit this rim will be sounds like other tom?
Doesn't look like the sound is matching the strike? There looks and sounds to be a delay?
Hi Tony, don´t know what you mean, maybe you have to check your video/audio settings for playback. In some cases, youtube might display a video with the audio being off synch. Everything is clearly in synch here, kind regards!
Hi may it also work on cymbal
Like I wanna separate my ride bow and edge and make it another crash
Sorry for my poor English and Thanks!
Hi Mikey, the splitters do work with cymbal pads, but not quite as well as with dual zone tom/snare pads. You will lose some of the dynamic bandwidth of the second cymbal (rim zone), which will only trigger well in the upper velocity levels. If you need further information, please get in touch through info@drum-tec.de! Kind regards
So I can take a "stock" td17kvx or the atv drum Tec exs with the td17 module and add a fourth floor Tom in aux input , a third crash in crash2 input then split tom 1&2 rims for 2 splashes then split Tom 3&4 rims for 2 China's
Hi Jeffrey, no unfortunately splitting tom rims to cymbals won´t work satisfactory. You can split 2 toms into 4 toms and then use the free inputs for 2 additional dual zone cymbals. Everything else won´t be working on the full dynamic range. For more info, please get in touch through info@drum-tec.de Kind regards!
What's the small extra Tom running to? Could I just have another cymbal there instead?
@@jeffreyflowers5821 Hey Jeff, no this small fx tom is only mono (head) & running on one of the splitters. Kind regards!
I fucking need this. But then I realise I don't have any money
Would this work with Yamaha?
For splitting Yamaha drums you just need a basic stereo to dual mono y cable.
Wie viele Splitter wurden hier insgesamt verwendet?
Hallo Daniel, siehe Video ab 2:10 Viele Grüße!
So glad you’re doing splitters now!
But so i’m clear when you to it you can’t both pads at the same time? Or it’s ok?
No that only triggers the edge (cymbal in most cases)
I´ve just re-checked, in my specific setup this worked. For further questions, please get in touch through info@drum-tec.de! Kind regards

Will these work on the Roland TD27 module?
Hey Robert, yes they will! Only limitation would be that the drum-tec Jam NG trigger system won't get you positional sensing on the snare drum. For positional sensing, you'll need a combined mid/side trigger system like the one in the diabolo series:

Does a alesis strike ride work with a roland td 17 module?
Hi Hugo, I don´t think that the 3 zone functionality will be 100% compatible. But you can check with info@drum-tec.de to make sure. Kind regards!
save your money. literally buy a 4th tom, and use a 1/4" (6.35mm) TRS cable and plug it in the AUX port. then press assign, and assign the 4th drum to desired sample.
Hi, the TD-17 is "maxed out" with a 4th tom & second crash cymbal, the idea of splitters is to expand the amount of inputs beyond this amount (as to be seen in the video). Kind regards!
@@drumtecTV yeah man I was literally thinking that as I hit the send button, you are not wrong. But with the set up I have, you don’t lose the rim and choke etc.. I spent a good 2 weeks working this out! Your videos are very helpful to, and keep that drumming up who ever that is!
