I use 100 Easy lessons for teaching to blend, then I start them on Alphaphonics and add in the McGuffey’s Primer. Works great!

Thanks for this suggestion. I have all those books and don't know how to structure things.

I just did a lesson a day. Once he got more fluent, I gave him the Primer, and just let him read a lesson, in addition to Alpha Phonics. Don’t overthink it, I know what I’m talking about ☺. Get your child started and see how it goes.

@fritzieschomaker1476 - Thank you! I just got started, tentatively though, with my 4 - and 6 year olds. Both appear ready, although the 6 year old is very competitive and gets in his own head that he can't do it. He wants to keep guessing words (just to be fastest), and they don't know how to blend. They'll say all the phonics fine, but then say a totally different (guess) at the end, lol. Thank you again!

@@sharpfamily4938 it‘ll come! I just stayed with 100 Easy Lessons until blending was not a problem anymore, those games (say it fast, say it slow) really help.

I’ve heard the rule about i, u, v, or j but I changed it to say “USUALLY don’t end in i,u,v, or j” because…. How do you explain words like you, menu, broccoli, spaghetti, alibi, etc? (Not very many words end in v or j but I’ve found more words that end with u or i). Enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing!

They are not English so they don't follow English spelling rules. I'm pretty sure most of those words mentioned are Italian? We have lots of those we've adopted! French words too; chef, chandelier, buffet... Greek root words... Affixes... Not all of our vocabulary is English. This is why I am so in love with spelling. It reveals so much of our history! I wonder if other languages, similarly, have crossed streams with foreign tongues to produce such a complex language.

@@landofkakiakahomeschool ohh you just made that click for me. The rule is “ENGLISH words don’t end in i,u,v or j” - it makes sense now! I was thinking about it just in the context of the rule applying to any word we speak/spell.

@@makerofahome right! I think we need an updated name for our language. How about Italengench?

I'm sorry I am hitting your videos hot and heavy with questions. :D So my kids can read, but not necessarily great with spelling and being able to recognize how to spell a word. Should I skip this stage and maybe just drill the phonograms every day in addition to the McGuffey Reader and Spelling books? Or do you think maybe doing the Spelling Bootcamp would be beneficial?

How old are they? You may want to do the phonographs with them and at least Splendid Spelling. That’s a nice gentle approach. I’d say spend a month on that and then start a spelling practice of choice. I feel like I want to make a video around this because it’s a good question that many have. momdelights.com/index.php/2022/08/28/free-spelling-curriculum/

Yes, sorry. I had a copyright issue with the music so I had to replace it and upload a new video.
