Since its earliest history, the term ‘Legion’ has been heavily associated with the Roman military, whether it denoted entire armies in the formation years of the Roman Republic, or the more elite forces we have come to associate with the period of the Roman Empire.
Serving as trailblazers in the early years of the Empire, Roman Legions spearheaded imperial expansion allowing Rome to dominate much of Europe and beyond in the classical era.

A simple but genius tactic
He forgot to mention, the Pilum javelin's purpose and design was special. The long, skinny shank at the end was meant to pierce the shield of an enemy. I know he said that, but there was a 2nd reason. Once it penetrated, that skinny bar of metal would bend and warp. So it made it REALLY hard to pull it out of your shield. So a barbarian soldier would be forced to toss his shield away, leaving him way easier to kill. When that pilum hit your shield, you basically lost your shield all together.
That it true, but I beleive there were also some made to be thrown into the enemy, and have the tip break off.
@@_gmmaann_ Jeah, it either break off or bent.
this wasnt always the case, since marius, i believe, replaced one of the 2 -lets call them- screws with a wooden one that would break and bend the pilum on impact with the enemy shield. i dont hink they forgot to put that in there, its just not that important. i believe their video was one of the best to summarize the most imporant things in a legion (stretching over many centuries-pun intended).
@@bigboyxxxXxxx The Pilum was meant to do that though, and I feel he could have spared at least 5 seconds to add it.
@@_gmmaann_ i know they could, its just that you think of this one detail being important enough to make the cut, but they didnt. you could find a lot of "it just takes 5 seconds" stuff to put in the video, but then we would end up with an hour long version. some things have to be cut and its up to the guy who puts this together to decide. anyway, my intention was just to point out that he probably chose to leave that out. have a great day

3:25 - "The only important thing was that the recruit was a freeborn man."

Something to remember, until Servius Tullius came to power, the Roman army was a series of “war-bands” led by a chieftain. The soldiers in the band would typically have a helmet, made of either wood or metal, along with a small shield, with a lightweight spear meant to be thrown. The chieftain would also have a lightweight throwing spear and a shortsword. It was the sword that truly showed his authority. He would also have a more decorated helmet, made of metal.

Omg it's so good to watch simple history on Friday when I'm going to my army friends house
Before I pressed play it was obvious who sponsored this lol
I do believe this video is littered with mistakes. I’ll explain what I’ve found:
@ 2:21 The Marian reforms changed eligibility for recruitment from those who owned property of a minimum value to the Capite Censi (by the head) system. It meant the landless poor we’re now eligible to join the legions, but they did have to be a citizen. It isn’t until hundreds of years later that the Emperor Caracalla extends the rights of citizenship to everyone who lives in the Empire. During the time of the Marian reforms, non-citizens could join the army and go into the Auxilia and were awarded citizenship upon retirement. They could NOT join the legions. Their sons would be citizens at birth, however, making eligible to join the legions despite their family originally coming from ‘outside’ of the Italian provinces/the Empire.
The belt @ 6:49 is called a Cingulum. Balteus is the name given to the baldric that’s worn from the shoulder, from the Gladius in hung. The other type of waist belt is called a Cintus (see 8:27).
@ 7:38 As far as the armour goes, the Lorica Laminata/Segmentata is plate armour, not really a cuirass type of armour. A typical cuirass used by the Romans was a solid one piece iron breast plate, often covered with leather and decorated to show muscles, reliefs of gods, or other patterns. They’re commonly called Lorica Musculata.
@ 8:01 That’s a mistake in the narration, Lorica Hamata has on one ‘t’ in it.
@ 9:03 The shield on the right of that picture is not a scutum, that’s a Parma. Soldiers such as the Signifer (Standard Bearer) would be equipped with that.
I’m not a professional historian, but I grew up around an awful lot of Roman archeological sites, have been fascinated by Ancient Rome since I was a small child, and posses a large library of Roman history books. All the information I’ve given can be found in your typical shop bought Roman history books. I hope this was helpful 🙂
Each video gets better.
