I broke my tailbone imitating this scene as a kid... Moral of the story is, don't fling yourself onto furniture unless you're positive you know where all the gaps are.
Ouch. Hope it healed.
no kidding 🤣
@@jeffeisley Ah. That feeling when you come back three years later and see over 200 people now know of your shame. :)
It... kind of healed. It still hurts every now and again.
@@Prizzlesticks haha naw, I view it as bravery! have you seen the new series? I just finished it
Ouch
I love how all ten episodes' names in the first season of the series are quotes from this movie.
Hopefully they can keep at it!
It's trending in Netflix top 10 right now, so I have a feeling they will order more. There is definitely a demand. The odds are.good. Better than the odds were for.the creation of Age of Resistance. Nobody saw that coming!
@@kevinr.3542 *happy Chamberlain whimpers*
Kevin R. Oh I know the show will probably continue! I mean naming episodes after quotes from the og movie!
Too bad the show sucks now.
Wonderful scene, beautifully shot. This movie truly shows how unique and creative Jim Henson really was. At the core, you're just watching a bunch of muppets, but somehow Henson made it dramatic as hell. RIP
These aren't Muppets! Just because these were created by Henson Associates, for a Jim Henson film, doesn't mean they're Muppets! These are _creatures_ ! Created by people who would eventually form Jim Henson's Creature Shop!
Who's here after watching netfix The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance?
How many Gelfings.., I mean 80's chirldren are there left 🤗🤗🤗
I’m a 90’s baby, and this is among my top 5 movies of my childhood!!
I'm 80s
I'm a hybrid of late 80s/early 90s kid born 1982 and the show looks amazing and kids of the 80s and kids of the 90s who grew up with this are in for a treat
I'm still watching it but I'm not right now

Seen the prequel show?
Ugh the sound effects are so fucking gooood
Fun fact for those who have not read the dark crystal comic....
It was the skeksis who created the shard, the previous emperor used a pick-axe like tool (which would one day become the Imperial Scepter) and shattered the crystal on the day when the beings were split into separate species. The piece fell down a chasm, where the one eyed sage woman would spend years shifting through hundreds of crystal fragments until she had finally collected the various pieces which she believed to be the true shard.
Then, the darkening.
But in the series the shard is Hidden in the dual glaive
Aaron Anand yes...but who put it there
What about the previous emperor's crystal fragment in the Imperial Scepter?
What is the name of the comics? I’ve been trying to find them for ages... any ideas where I can get them?
When single shines the triple sun, what was sundered and undone shall be made whole, the two made one, by Gelfling hand or else by none.
This movie scared the crap out of me
Yes. I had flashbacks of this horror in my adulthood but couldn't remember if it was real or imagined. Now I've found it.
chicken chaser
Gelflings are not stealthlings. Come on, duck down behind a wall or something!
As a kid I literally yelled at Kira to duck down. 😆
Vaprans are supposed to be able to naturally blend into their environments. I suppose Kira is only half-Vapran though.
This is pure magic! The films of today cannot match the beauty and the imagination of this masterpiece!
Well, we can't rule them all out
I think Age of Resistance does a pretty good job :)
When Kira threw the shard to Jen, it would’ve sucked if it went down the pit
DUDE! 😆😆😆😆😆😆
Lol that's what I thought every single time I saw the film.
Well then Power of the Dark Crystal would have happened sooner.
Fizzgig was down there. He would have caught it and brought it back up.
@@stevenscottoddballz but wouldn't he have to let go of what he was holding with his mouth?
Things I love about this particular scene: the protagonist actually wants to give in to the bad guys to save the person he loves (very unusual in a film)--SHE'S the one to make the sacrifice. That shard toss clip is beautiful. After she gets stabbed the last thing she does is look at him and say his name, whereupon he immediately chucks the shard in that crystal and then slowly walks to her--task complete. I mean, he barely even looks at the chaos around him after that since he's so focused on her!
Yeah, seriously, all skekZok had to do was wait a few seconds. It's funny because in the series, they show him get on the General for doing basically the same thing lol
@@carlycrays2831 But in the series, SkekZok was interested in gaining the Gelflings' trust in order to drain them. Here, all bets are off.
@@Maldoror2112 I think here he is just to the point where he wants the annoying Gelfling gone.
In a way, her death motivates him. He enters that screw this and stabs the crystal.
These puppets still look freaking amazing over 30 or so years later. It's amazing how a film this old looks better then half the CGI garbage today. And let me just say this I don't hate CG but I honestly can only name a few films that have unitised computer effects that have aged well.
What about in Labyrinth, Ninja Turtles, Storyteller, Fraggles, Dinosaurs WItches, Dreamchild etc.? Henson was a genius and there is some good recent CGI characters like Rocket Raccoon, Caesar and all that but practical is the best.
Looking forward to the TV show prequel?
Arguably one of the greatest movies ever! I still don't understand how I wasn't afraid of the when I was a kid!! XD

This movie was released on December 17, 1982 and started getting filmed in 1981.
The beggining of 80s are a kind of golden age to me. Awesome
The voices in the show resemble the voices here. I'm impressed
Before I started school, I watched the VHS literally every day! When the credits rolled, I'd start crying and my mom would have to rewind it and play the movie again just to make me stop. That's how I got to watch the movie like 3-4 times a day! 😂😂😂
WE WILL FOREVER❗️
I love this film. Brilliant work from both Jim Henson and Frank Oz.
No one gonna mention how he just went flyin at the end😂
Magic 👍👐🙌
More like falling, really. 😉
FREAKING ICONIC❤❤❤❤❤
Jim Henson completely changed the way I see movies. Yes his muppet style movies are cheesey at times and appear to be targeted towards children but his creatures look absolutely amazing and has some of the most memorable characters in history. Seeing behind the scenes footage of the muppet creation team gave me a whole new respect for this style of movie. Takes so damn long to create and film these...which means a massive cost
I remember this as a kid.
Greatest part of the movie. "AAAAAAHHHH!!!"
frozen222 I know! When Jen yells as he plunges the shard into the crystal I always get goosebumps. The way the music swells, the explosion, Jen getting thrown into the air...beyond epic! Gets me every time!
SunBunz I just thought it was funny lol
frozen222 lol and I take it SO seriously! xD
That and Chamberlains’ scream of terror are my favorites!!
and the relief that Kira will be revived....
One of my very favorite movies of all time.
Dammit, skekZok, you just had to wait a fee more minutes.
He was probably thinking, "I should have done this as soon as SkekSil brought her here! Stupid Emperor and Scientist..."
I saw this, when it came out in the theatre. ...still love it

Vanessa Phillips My brother & I were both toddlers when The Dark Crystal first hit theaters. It wasn't until we were 6 & 5 years old respectively when our parents & grandmother rented The Dark Crystal for us from a local video store thinking that we would like it...They were absolutely right!!! & we've loved watching it ever since!!! I cannot wait for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance :)
Same here I almost can't believe they're puppets watching now
well sorry to say but the movie has a ton of plot holes and mistakes.
Vanessa Phillips I saw it today in a movie theatre through Fathom Events!😁
I used to watch this back waaaaay in the day....awww the memories.
Dark crystal, ET, star wars, and the never ending story. I grew up as an 80s baby.
Seeing this in (restored) 1080p is amazing, all of the details that went into each puppet are amazing.
3:12 when physics ragdoll you.
I watched this movie a few years ago. Apparently I also saw it when I was a child, but I only remember the scene where the one bird-monster dies at the beginning of the film, though for some strange reason the scene in my memory doesn't look anything like the scene in the movie, though what happened was the same. Weird...
I think you just completely explained the Mandela Effect... did the movie itself change? or was your childhood memory a bit off...
lXBlackWolfXl Something similar happened to me with The Neverending Story. I remember Artax dying, but instead of sinking in the swamp of sadness, they went to an icy, snowy place where Artax drank out of a well and turned to ice. Now I can’t find anything resembling what I remember...
Saaaaaame
The only other thing I remember when I was younger was the scientist falling to his death
Still the best movie of my childhood
Heal the shard. To sacrifice is to truly know how to love with all your heart. Only then have you really lived.
There's honestly so much to love about this scene, but one of my favorite "details" (aspects? thingies?? lol) is at 2:37. Something about the dead-silence asides from Kira and some murmuring in the crowd gathered around her, along with how the Skeksis steps back from her looking as surprised as Jen. The cherry on top is how they all just,,,look up at Jen and they pretty know what's going to happen.
A.k.a. skekZok/the Ritual Master did a fucky-wucky killing Kira in front of Jen
Goosebumps. Even after all these years. Goosebumps.
I saw this when I was 4 and it was so weird when I look back on how much I loved it
FIZGIG. "the puffy ball thing" I MISS FIZGIG.
He's so cute @0:40

He was alive. In a later scene it is shown he is hanging onto a rock.
This was the first thing my family ever watched on Netflix. My dad was so happy he got to share a movie from his childhood with us.
Did any animal lovers soul die a little bit at 1:40...

@RUclipsr Blue THANK U I FELT LIKE CRYING AT THAT MOMENT CUZ FIZZGIG WAS ADORABLE AND IM AN ANIMAL LOVER
That moment is well done.
I freaked out when I thought that Kira and Fizgig died.
RUclips Blue and that aguhra saved him with a stick
Do you mean Animal with a capital A? He reminded me of Animal, the drummer from the Muppet Show (also a Jim Henson production).
Truly, the workprint is a special work of art in its own right. Please, restore it in HD, just like the theatrical cut, so that audiences can enjoy this film's unique wonder in a whole new way.
This movie scared the crap out of me when i was a child, but is also one of my favorites of all times! XD
Beautiful movie I loved it when I was little still love it today!💝🙌🤩
Why dont we have stuff like this today
Because puppets and real sets were expensive and took a long time, people would rather just cgi now. Back then was better.

@@RUclipsCX9 agreed, we need more people like Jim
@@RUclipsCX9
Well there is gems of practical effects in recent memory like Shape of Water (quite creative fantasy from the director of Pan's Labyrinth and Devil's Backbone), Blade Runner 2049 (excellent sequel to a classic), Mandy (quality independent horror fantasy film), Child's Play remake (surprisingly good reimagining that improves on the lousy last 4 films and be on par with the first 3 films when Chucky was actually scary instead of a joke and nice use of practical effects) and so on.
And the new prequel show looks like an excellent passion project like Blade Runner 2049 was to Blade Runner.
Time constraints and money.
Best movie ever, and my favourite! :P Jim Henson is a legend!

@@linkin6992 This is nothing more than imagination put to film. There is no hidden meaning in it, it is just a product of someone that read a lot of fantasy books. Kind of like church.
I love this movie. Personally, I think that yesterday special effects are more interesting than today's special effects, and Henson does this superbly. If you look closely in the scene after this one, you can actually see Jen crying. I wonder how they did that with animatronics. I fell in love with Fizgig right away because he reminds me of my two Pomeranians, fluff, penchant for barking, and all.
By the way, hi, SquallLeonhart. Should've guessed I find you on this page. You're on MC, yes?
@multirainbowhawk they used puppetry with animatronic components.
@multirainbowhawk it is! I can't believe I wrote that comment 8 years ago. Oh my goodness.
When i was little i used to love this movie! Jim henson and frank oz did an awesome job on this movie :)
Something about Kira crying out Fizzgig’s name when he’s thrown down the shaft always breaks my heart
Be glad he's alive
I hated that little thing. Me and my friend cheered when he went down.
I don't know if its just me and my sister. But we believe that Deet and Rian are the parents of Jen. When she flashed foward to what was going to happen, she saw Rian putting the shard into the crystal. She might not be able to see her own children cause she doesn't know if she can have any yet. So instead she sees Rian putting the crystal in. Oh and we also believe that Brea is the mother of Kira.
Kira is definitely a Vapran. Jen looks like Rian, too.
My mother say to my younger sister: "Since you are born, your sisters listened it!"
"The more you tighten your grip, the more systems will slip through your fingers."

Because it looks like someone throwing a puppet of a building it looks ridiculous
This is my fave movie
And at that moment the ritual master knew he done goofed
He really just had to wait a few seconds.
Well that so sucks when the shard slipped
0:55 "Oh, the bloody hell!"
Fizzgig is the best character.
I half jumped out of my seat when Fizzgig burst out of his hiding place.
Fizzgig is not dead
Arguably the most annoying.
*Cough* Raunip
@@paulwettstein7071 So did I. And you should've seen my Dad when they showed that scene in the movie theater! When Fizzgig popped out of that hole and roared loudly at Jen, my Dad got so startled, that he leaned at back in his chair with a look on his face like, "What was that?" I nearly peed my pants laughing at him!
"The Shard! The Shard is mine!" *CHOMP!*
Fizzgig!
I got into the movie and didn't want it to stop
This was as much her quest as it was jen's. She helped out in a big way
She was more heroic than Jen throughout most of the movie
@@alamasmith1511 Nahhh it was about equal.
This movie was terrifying when I was a kid
As a movie intended for kids, it did have several dark moments and was scary for kids. I tear up whoever I see Kira give up her life to heal the crystal but I am glad that in the ending, she is revived. I think she is more the chosen one than Jen.
Neither could have accomplished anything without the other. It’s a metaphor for the masculine and feminine principles being balanced and in harmony.
I really wish there was a PART 2 to this movie!!!
The series is coming out on Netflix next year.
"Give us the shard and you can go free."
"No!"
I always loved the way she says the line.
I don't exactly know why, but when the skeksises looked at Jen after Kira dies brightens me up a bit.
1:36 i always love that part XD LOL
I agree, the work print is a completely different version of the film, I watched them one right after the other one day, and the dialog is completely different. I wish they would find a good version of it, clean it up and release it.
I just realized the Galfeim look exactly like those crabs from Fallout 4
Hey, did you guys hear, after Chamberlain screeched a second time, one of the bad guys muttered “What the Bloody Hell?!”
Never caught that all the times I've watched the movie! 😂😂😂
I discover this marvellous movie when I was a child. This was so strong it gave me a great inspiration for my own stories. Myrihandes was born a little thanks to Jen and Kira...
I discovered this movie in my attic when I was 6 and I love it
The puppetry compared between TDC and AoR is almost impossible to differentiate. I love it!!!
Especially the Skeksis puppets. Their faces look better in the series, but that's just because of CGI and better materials. Really, even the Gelfling puppets look pretty good.
Of course it's a brilliant work from Jim Henson and Frank Oz. Both of them directed this film.
There are some deleted scenes on one of the DVDs. I know they're on the first DVD but I can't say if they're on later releases. Worth noting is that there were two different releases of the film; the original and one for the US market. I actually recall seeing both versions in the same theater and have both versions, the US version on VHS and the original on DVD.
The sequel has been "coming soon" for nearly a decade now.
do love this movie
I've watched this movie a thousand times. Watching New Netflix series I couldn't help but point out the Crystal Shard is Purple in the series but in the Movie its Clear as Pure. I can't hardly wait to find out what happened and how this is related to the Skeksis Emperor's demise.
The Shard in the show had just absorbed some of the General's own essence. Perhaps that is it?
I really wished Kira could have been able to fly
O e of my top 10 movies of all time.
From what i understand it got rereleased in theateres for a limited time last or this year for its anniversary.
GEEZ! this thing's main characters are scarier than the villains.
The skeksis are just scared of the gelfings, like "WOAH what the fuck is THAT?! Jesus christ, kill it!"
On that last part, I just love it when the skeksis had nothing else to do but beg to jen like not to put the shard back into the crystal lol.
I was born in 1996 and I grew up watching this movie
I was born in the 70s and i still love watching this film, beats cgi anyday.
Did anyone else instantly think of this movie when they heard about the celestial conjunction of Jupiter & Venus this past week? :-)
Best line- What about the prophesy, that the Galfling shall find the shard.
The skepsis kinda look similar to elites on halo 😂
I'm not sure what you people all think? But I believe that this prophecy would never have happened if the skeksis hadn't murdered all the gelfling. I think when they murdered the gelfling that was the moment their fates where sealed. Meaning that the killing of all gelflings would later come back to bite them all in their skeksis asses. That's just my opinion feel free to comment what you like.
I'm sure there were other gelflings who fled the country of the crystal and went to other islands and underground
I think that's sort of the point. The Skeksis just kept making it worse and worse for themselves.
I can remember watching this film 8 years ago and being so upset at 1:44, I had to hug my dog since she reminds me of Fizzgig!!
So I was pretty relieved when he was saved shortly after..
The puppies death made me wanna cry!
Noooooo fizz gig!

Jim Henson did a good Mako impression
NO FIZZGIG
It's ok. Fizzgig is fine. There's a scene shortly after this showing that Fizzgig survived and is hanging on the edge. Aughra helps Fizzgig get over the edge and in another scene after that, Aughra is heading back to the chamber and Fizzgig is following her there
