First of a 2 part adventure into the wilderness with a big pack and a plan to find some big brown trout in some of the most stunning surroundings I have seen yet.
I knew very little about this place and have wanted to explore it for a few years now so finally got myself in there to see for myself.
A longer form episode this week as it was a big day and I also go into detail about my camping gear and set up, locator beacons and safety and my food of choice whilst on these types of missions...

Easily the most informative NZ FF channel of it's time. Others came before that were really good and others will follow, but the absences of TOT means we don't get to dream of NZ rivers in a very special way, whether we have been there or not. So I'm going to watch them occasionally, and where I haven't already, give them a thumbs up! When I go back, I know who to hire as a guide.
I love these remote camping videos. Cant wait for episode 2.
That fish was magnificent! You rock Alex….another great video!
Thanks man
You live my dreams brother! Amazing country and beautiful fish!
Hi Alex, thanks for one more magnificent overnighter. Great fishing and plenty of good info and doubled up on care when out on your own. There are some deep holes in our bush that have huge Taniwha that swallow unwary bushwalkers. Those sandflies are worse than fly strike on a sheep’s backside! Keep safe. Cheers mate. Harera
Great video, thanks for all the gear information and gorgeous scenery
Nice one! When you blow up your mat, blow into the bag from about 30cm away, and you can inflate the whole bag in two breaths. You don't need to put it up to your face :).
Been eying up that sleeping bag!
So so good Alex. That take on the dry just after the goats….. 👌👌👌👌 that’s what dreams are made of.
Great vid brother
Peace ✌️
Living the dream Alex 🤩 What a day , seriously impressive location and top quality fish . Stuff of dreams . And of course an Irish Coffee 🇮🇪🇮🇪All the best Tony 🇮🇪🇮🇪
Mean video, thanks for sharing!
You definitely are amazing
Great camp out unbelievable fishing and you photography is outstanding
Thanks heaps. Stoked you enjoy the content 💪
Hi there Alex another bit of fantastic content thanks heaps can't wait for part 2👍
Thanks for bringing me along and sharing day one of your adventures to new waters with huge brown trout around every corner. I really enjoyed the hike!
Cool trip. Thanks for sharing
Living the dream keep them coming!!
fantastic trip really enjoyed it
Epic 💪🎣
Amazing, cheers! The camp/general tips at the end were really helpful
First class job as usual. Keep it up and thanks for the ride.
Brilliant vid. Loved it all. Great safety briefing. Enjoyed behind the scenes camp site :)
Excellent video Alex, made my evening. Your spotting of fish is outstanding.
Another great one Alex! Sweet fish, good fishing bro… thx. Dave
Way cool 😎 spot
Awesome looking trip, good info on the beacon, started carrying one one my trips out, essential piece of kit.
Beautiful water and great fish. Good advice about the PLBs. When I think of places my brother and I went into, I realize how lucky we were to make it back without injuries. Enjoy that back country while you are young enough to get in and out.
Awesome video Alex, some beautiful browns, we do live in paradise here in NZ, thanks for all your tips, great to see the safety side as well. Can't wait to see part two. Take care be safe, tight lines.
And a cigar to finish with a whiskey no doubt, man after my own heart.
Cheers Mike
best NZ fishing! love this
yew 🤙
Insane mate🤙
Great video Alex. That was some serious bushwhacking. Beautiful river/fish/area. Also good info about the emergency beacons.
Brilliant film Alex.👍Reminds me of a trip to Whakatane too many years ago....
Great video, Alex. 👊
Great camera set up for the take on the dry!
Well done. For even more added safety, send me you gps coordinates, lol. Cant wait for part 2.
Respect!
Always a pleasure being out with you Alex. Two trivial questions: they look like great trousers, with knee pads? What are they? And what was the sandfly repellent device you sparked up at the end there? Really appreciate your work.
Another great video Alex, particularly thanks for sharing your outdoor gear as well, thats a great idea too!!!! …Do share more of that!!
Roger that!
Great video!! Really appreciated the length of this video and the extra non fishing parts.
Other than those damned sand flies, what an adventure! Your camping style is well thought out and practical. I am envious!!
Haha what's with the cigar man - what a way to finish the day lol !!! Great content on the PLB's too - so important
Wow. That 1st dry fly eat.... so good capturing that on film. Can tell you've been by yourself a little while. The acsents are coming out 🤣👍
Hey Alex, cheers for the vid 🤙 spent the day on a west coast river yesterday and got absolutely annihilated by sandflies, so I feel your pain! Have a good one!
Love the goat content
Great trip Alex! cigar after a hot meal ! nice touch!
Livin life buddy!! You enjoy a cigar too?
@@TrippinOnTrout always on the river, after a catch
@@thewonderwok I like your style!!
Your videos keep getting better, keep it up. Amazing fishing shots, and love the review of new stuff. Cheers.
Thanks heaps man!
What a gorgeous fish )from minute 27 or something0. Beautiful. Still amazed about the quantity of fish.
Great vid thanks Alex. Happy to be a supporter.
Appreciate it man💪
As always, great vid Alex. That forest looks lethal, take care man. Seeing your sandflies activity, mad me buy some repellant and head net for a trip to Scotland to beat the midges. Keep up the good work
Super vid Alex!
Thanks man
Great stuff Alex , an awesome vid , a lot of of hard yards to for some magic fishin , very enjoyable , Dizzy
Cheers Dizzy, the ones you have to earn are the best fish aye!
Beaut area bud looks like sum of my old fishing grounds down deep south ,nice place to explore an beaut fish
Excellent Alex, I really enjoyed watching this episode and part 2. Yet another awesome adventure in an extraordinary place with superb fish, just mint bro 🤙
Cool bro. Good to see you on here man. Due for a catch up soon..
Wow feel good vid or what
Top angling. What a place
Pretty special alright 🧡
Picked me up that vid
My season here in England has been bad so far , what a place you got there , hopefully be there jan 2023 👍👌
Alex, another great video! Superb fish, great country and a Cigar....prefect! Really enjoyed the info on camping and safety as I am a total novice. Noticed SHE wasn't with you on this trip....! Keep on smokin.
Gotta love a cigar and whisky….and if u can do that by a camp fire in the wilderness…it doesn’t get any better!
Alex mate been watching your videos for about a year now and they are great, informative and learned a load from what you have uploaded. Thanks alot
That’s awesome man, thanks for the message💪
I’ve seen a ton of your videos mate and that is right up there (I think I prefer the solo adventure ones as that is my favourite gig ). Good humour and high production values enough to inspire a donation to the cause methinks
Thanks Tim! I do enjoy the solo stuff a bit more too I think. Any donations would be HUGELY appreciated..Legend
Thanks
Beautiful fish. So good that you promote PLBs, a couple of years ago a SaR guy explained to me it only takes one sq m of dense NZ bush to cover/hide a person, and there's a million sq m to a sq km, and a typical search area is many tens sq kms. So don't go bush without one. Watching that last part made me all itchy.
An awesome video maate..❤️ the bush scene behind ya 4:25, whilst setting up ur gear.. always a pleasure to watch, with dem trout on the rise pic's.. fantastic.. enjoy ur mission n camping 🏕️ outdoors is a buzz..take maate, happy 🎣🐠🎣..yep.. till da nix one..Kia ora ✌️👍😎

Great to see you here again my friend 👍👍
It be good to try an evening 🐠🎣 after a nice coffee/refresh break.. t's awesome, especially on a full moon 🌝 spectacular sight wen dem 🐟🐠 are rising..you've set up camp well ...well organised.. kaapai ra brutha, tiaki mai koe, take care, stay safe 🦾 aie, nga mihi atu, ano..Kia Ora ✌️🤙👍
Wonder how many of us raised our glasses to you when you did that, I know I did!👍🍻 Beautiful day on the water brother, envious as always!
That’s super cool to know that Tom! Cheers bro🥃
Really love the underwater releases. Made me wonder what it would be like to view the fly as the trout might see it...any chance you might be able to somehow video the natural drift of one of your nymphs underwater? That would be cool. Love your vids. 20:16 like a dream come true.
I know this reply is way late but trout hunting NZ has an old video of this
Before you buy another tent get a hammock, bottom quilt and tarp. Doesn’t get any better than that. You can sleep on that steep hillside, no rocks n no blowing up pads.
Fantastic video once again, Alex. Question for you. Apart from the sandflies 😀 we rarely see a lot of insect life in your videos, mayflies, caddis, and other stuff. Are they not present in great quantities in your rivers? Would be interesting to see some representative bugs in future videos, if only as an hommage to old Normand Marsh.
LMAO. I was just about to comment about you taking the Kiwi bush seriously and promoting safety. Then I saw my last comment!! 😂😂
Let me grab that first comment slot😅
I wait patiently for your vids Alex, never disappointed. Love the effort, love the vids, hopefully get to fish down in NZ soon
Awesome man, stoked u enjoy the content !💪
Thanks for the great content
Not sure if i missed it but would like to know what inflatable pillow you are using?
Awesome viewing
Another first class video. Your footage always inspires me to get out and cast a line, even though I am a long way from any wilderness here in SE UK. Always stoked to be able to follow your fishing adventures. I enjoyed your attempts at 'goat whispering' - gave me a giggle but think you might want to stick to trout ;-)
slovenija is the best fly fishing destination in the world
NZ is the most incredible thing. Its like all the pieces of the puzzle aligned there with the water perfect chemistry, lots of food, and beauty.
Two things I remember from my two visits in NZ South Island. Superbe scenaries and the Terrible Unbearable Bloody SAND FLIES…uhhhh hate them
Good to hear someone taking the kiwi bush seriously. That country will chew you up and spit you out if you take her for granted. Excellent video bro. Chur.
It really will aye….gotta give it the respect it deserves 🤙
@@TrippinOnTrout Too right man. The Bush is no joke.
@@kiwi_comanche …that’s what she said..😂
@@TrippinOnTrout 😂😂😂😂😂
Great advice on the PLB. I have activated my PLB on a trip in Australia due to a mate being injured and winched into an Air Ambulance Chopper. Best $300 odd dollars I have ever spent.
Great story there bro. Thanks for dropping that here. Your mate owes you a beer I reckon!
Hi @Alex, Really enjoy your videos.
However, just FYI, I believe you are using the inflating bag for inflating the sleeping mat incorrectly. The inflation bag shouldnt be blown directly into by sealing it around your mouth. You may as well blow directly into the mat. Rather, hold the bag open a couple of inches in front of your mouth and blow gently into it from there. The venturi effect fills the bag far quicker than trying to seal it around your mouth. Give it a try and you'll be amazed.
Great video last last fish looked over 8 lb at a guess ... What do ya think?? Have never caught a double figure (10lb) trout myself ... Would love to at some stage
I'm new to fly fishing and have only really been doing it consistently for about a year now. I would love to become a guide what would be the best route to take to becoming a successful guide. I live in wyoming near the north Platte river.
Jeez Alex. I don’t know what superlative is adequate for your film making. I will just stick with ‘cool’. Your favourite.
nice work, camera work and editing has got so good. on my long distance hikes i use the Zpacks duplex for myself. 500g need trekking poles or they sell collapsable small poles instead of trekking poles. super lightweight single wall, so leave a flap open to vent out condensation.4 pegs, two poles done. yep a good pillow you got there.
Been working hard on improving my game so glad that it’s coming across in the content. Thanks for the comment - those Z packs are awesome aye
@@TrippinOnTrout there tents are once you get the venting sorted, ( leaves a flap open, i would actually sew extension onto flaps so i can leave open in rain. ) really strong and light. but i wouldnt rec the packs, to fragile for nz tracks.
How are you so calm while you rig your rod at the river bank with four fish in view? I am always shaking with excitement when I’m rigging up, makes it hard to tie knots lol. I know you swing streamers sometimes but Do you ever throw big stripped streamers or at night mouse patterns for those big browns?
Hey mate loved the video, what pack are you using here?
Do the sand flies bite? Great video jealous of the amount of public land wilderness you have access too
Yep they bite….and then it itches like mad😂
Little tip, I could be wrong but I think you are meant to hold your mouth away from the bag that you blow in to pump the mattress up? It draws more air in with less breaths, seems weird I know, another great vid👍
ruclips.net/video/m0LX8oLX8VU/видео.html
Similar to this👍
Is that right….? I’ll try it - thanks for the tip 💪
Was going to comment saying this! Yep that will definitely make it way faster and easier blowing into it from a little bit away (If you are curious about how that works look up the Venturi effect!) Also epic video as usual!
New subscriber from upstate NY. I'm all about catch and release, but those trout sure would taste good cooked over the camp fire. Is it not allowed to take trout from streams in New Zealand?
It’s more that there are not many fish in those rivers and so it’s super important that they are looked after and returned so they can breed and the fishery continues. If people start taking those fish, there literally aren’t any others to replace them.
Didn’t know you were fluent in goat until now…. Was thinking with some of that sketchy stuff, good thing he has a PLB. Have you ever worried that you will get stuck having started your descent into a river? Or is there always a backtrack option?
Back in the early years I have got myself a bit lost here and there and stuck on occasion
Fell off a bluff once and got very lucky….that’s what prompted me to go buy my first beacon!
Hey Alex. Great video as always! You mind sharing the name of the song that kicks in at the 14 min mark? The old Shazam isn't doing the trick for this one. Thanks!
It’s called Magnetic by Prigida💪
@@TrippinOnTrout Much appreciated!!
Mate I've loved on your videos for a long time and always wanted to come to EN zed but I think those sand flies would send me crazy... tell me they're not that bad...
They ARE that bad!! Don’t get em in the north though…
Awesome content mate! Just one question… do you ever eat the trout on a camp trip?
No. There’s just not enough fish in those rivers for people to be taking fish for food.
Another excellent video Alex, enjoyed your piece on PLB and In Reach, a great description, I carry a PLB when ever fishing as often down in a river bed cell coverage disappears. PLB also has a second frequency 121.5 that the helicopter (or ground team) use to direction find your location from closer range. The info from your PLB is sent to RCC, Rescue Coordination Centre in Wellington who will organize and liase with the appropriate emergency service.
Great info there bro…thanks for putting that on here👍👍
@@TrippinOnTrout Thank you for getting that info out there, lots of time and effort could be saved if everyone followed your advice. Years ago we didn't have these devices, but no excuse now
@@NeilgRichardson 💯 percent mate! Blows my mind that people just don’t have one with them out there🤷♂️
I loved your early comment, “let’s spook some fish” then you catch one💪 is Frank poorly??
Hahaha, the sun even shines on a dogs ass some days brutha😂😂
Loving the videos dude. Just out of curiosity do u ever fish at night. Obviously it would make for less compelling video as wee wouldn't be able to see anything.haha. was just wondering surely some of the bigger trout become active after dark or at dusk. During the witching hours. Love the content.
I have fished at night but am usually too tired to bother on these kinda trips.
@@TrippinOnTrout I'd say so dude. I think its something we think about more maybe in other parts of world where the bigger fish are harder to find during day. You have such amazing fisheries that insomnia is not a requirement.haha.
I envy you no blackberries and no snakes and trout twice the size of ours
We do have a ton of blackberry…🤷♂️
Hey Alex another primo mission. Love those solo's. Done quite a few myself over the years. Love spending the time going over the gear and eliminating stuff right down to the last gram. Have got the kit down to super lite-weight 15-16kg for an 8 day mission when I go with my buddy, although I haven't got all the video gear like you. You might want to go even lighter by taking a summer sleeping bag and then use one of those SOL Escape Bivvy bags which you pull over the top of your sleeping bag and is just as warm but will shave up to 500 grams more weight off your load. So can you tell us all what weight your kit is at on a solo with the camera gear included. Cheers.
Sounds like you have it dialled in man!!
With camera gear, the lightest I can get things is around that 20kg mark…..stoopid videos🤦♂️🙂
@@TrippinOnTrout
Hell thats not bad. Maybe you need a smaller net as well to trim a bit more weight.
No Deet type solution for Sand Flies?
I won’t put that shit on my skin bro.
Just cover up and deal with them….I kinda like it in a sick way🤷♂️
@@TrippinOnTrout Hmm O.K that is "way sick" ...I'll arrive with a big can if I ever make it over.. great videos by the way.
@@notabiologist9865 haha, good stuff bro. Don’t get sandflies in the north island for some reason🤷♂️
If you go south, bring TWO cans!!
I very much advise to support Alex via Patreon.
THANKS MY BRUTHA💪
Where do I find part two to this video?
I found it, thank you .
👍👍
Excellent video. What type of leggings are you using on this trip?
Thanks man. They are just thermal base layer leggings 👍
Do you keep fish at all, have you tried how good they taste, catching and releasing are for non- fisherman because real fishermen catch clean and cook them up with some good recipes and their videos are awesome so you enjoy your trips im going to keep seeking new U-Tubers who like to eat their catch and show the viewers how to clean them whether it's fish, crab, shrimp
etc i know without a doubt those nice Rainbow trout taste real good
Your comment shows your ignorance towards our fragile Fisheries and just why good catch and release ethics are essential to the sustainability of such places. If everyone had your attitude then there would literally be no fish left in those kind of rivers any more. I hope you never come here to fish.
Catching up with your contributions I've missed over the past 12 to 24 months! Will drop a few $ when I get my tax return and recommend everyone subscribed do the same; you are worth your weight in gold Alex! 👌🦾😎 Sorry for laughing when you get caught up in the bushes, my working day is stressful! 😂 Stunning fish, inspiring fishing and best wishes always, peace! 😍🙏 And don't mentation the scenery! ✔
Hope you find some good in there bro….done some super cool things in that time.
And I thank you in advance for a donation and for spreading the love Gary.
God. Damn. Legend.
