Richard Linklater Breaks Down His Career, from Dazed and Confused to Boyhood | Vanity Fair - Развлечения
Linklater is a director who is so underappreciated. He's never in the auteurist conversation with Anderson or Tarantino or Scorsese but he SHOULD be.
I think it's because he doesn't have a constant, visual component in his movies. Not really. People seem to mistake having that with being an auteur.
@@Chantal-612 And for various reasons his movies don't make a lot of money.
Honestly, Chantal and Oliver kind of hit the nail right on the head here... People mention Tarantino and Anderson in these auteurist conversations because they have distinctive, easy-to-recognize styles that show up in every movie AND because they're popular. Linklater's a bit of a chameleon style-wise... a lot his films have different gimmicks/narrative frames and because of that, you can't recognize them as easily as, say, Anderson. (also it doesn't help that a lot of his movies aren't as accessible as your average Tarantino/Scorses movie)
@@apullcan absolutely love that about Linklater.
you might think with how much he’s experimented “nah this movie is gonna be too odd for me”, but he’s knocked them out the park each time.
Great artist
Honestly wished he talked more about the Before Trilogy.
Jared Neal the Criterion Blu-Ray box set has a lot of special features!
Now I am compelled to buy the Blu-Ray
@@Joshonthenet is it region free, because I'm region B
am the only one here hoping there will be a fourth movie ?!!!
@@bleumarin1968 That would be great! I think Jesse and Celines story has been told in full. If they did it would be about their divorce lol.
this video could have been 40 minutes and covered more of his films and i would have watched, I think he's one of the most interesting filmmakers working today and i love hearing about his process
I agree. It's too short!
Straight skipped a decade...
In my opinion, dazed and confused is one of the best movies of all time, and I can’t thank this man enough for creating it
I’m torn between Dazed and Confused and Everybody Wants Some. They’re both amazing movies in their own rights
@@slopcrusher3482no need to be torn. They're like the Harry Potter books, all of a piece. It's basically one story in two parts. Dazed is him going into high school and Everybody Wants Some is him going into college.
Hands down my favourite filmmaker. As a slacker and self-confessed dreamer and someone who struggles to exist within the mainstream, his films speak to me in a way not many do. Counter-culture and proud.
i could not have said it better.
💯agreed
As far as I can see, he understands the subjectivity of quality/how something can be appreciated. Not for any audience necessarily. As long as you're honest in making your piece, somebody, somewhere, will like it. And to that person/those people, it is 'good' for them, so the piece having quality is validated enough. Not a good way to sell a product to as many people as you can, but he sets precedent here for it not having to be about that.
The way you said it made me feel validated because I'm just accepting these or similar terms to refer to myself and my perception.
Couldn't agree more! Out of interest have you got any other directors to recommend that you feel are on the same wave length as Linklater or films you feel like could have been his but aren't?
School of Rock is easily one of greatest kid movies ever made
400 blows is better
Jeff Free You actually want to say pedantic
Eric Valenzuela you suck
One of my favorite directors! The Before sunsrise/sunset/midnight trilogy is a masterpiece study of relationships and it has affected me deeply. Linklater is a true artist.
Amen. It's a perfect trilogy. (Sunset is my personal fave of the 3 though)
Linklater is a thinker - notice how he managed to turn his inner thoughts into storytelling. 'Boyhood' is a masterpiece
It took twelve years to make.
A thinker and an Intuitive
School of Rock is the movie that turned the bored, interested-in-nothing 16y/o who only listened to Hip Hop and other popular music into the biggest Led Zeppelin fan. And the funny thing is Led Zeppelin isn't even featured in that movie that much, but School of Rock opened the door to a whole new world of music for me. I also credit this movie with teaching me to keep an open mind. I was so snobby as a teenager. Anything I didn't already like was somehow 'bad' to me and School of Rock slapped that attitude out of my face with its energy and enthusiasm and love for music. It changed me for the better. I can't name many films that have done that for me.
Can't you love hip hop AND rock?
How is listening to hip hop a bad thing?
@@CugnoBrasso no it's not a bad thing, he meant more variety in music.
His movie always has his mellowness in life. Good times bad times that’s life and it’s ok. It’s never boring even though it has the risk of being one. Like a reflection of oneself
Definitely, very phlegmatic in a temperament way.
The Before Trilogy is underrated. Masterpiece films. I always try to get people to watch them and when they do they say no wonder you kept recommending the movie.
00:41 Woodshock
01:49 Slacker
03:34 Dazed and Confused
05:58 Before Sunrise
08:14 Waking Life
09:53 School of Rock
11:31 Boyhood
13:47 Where'd You Go, Bernadette
Thank you!
Jim Jam was really hoping he’d talk about Everybody Wants Some
@@balloonfiesta15 - I can't believe he talked about Waking Life but not Scanner Darkly. Easily my fav two. I'm a sucker for rotoscoping.
god bless you
He talks about every movie he's made, then Vanity Fair chooses what goes in the video. So blame them.
Definitely one of the most skillful directors out there
not to mention creative, intelligent and versatile, id even say "wildly versatile" The only problem with this video is for folks who dont know these movies, anyone reading this: WATCH THESE MOVIES!!!
You must have no knowledge of the world of filmmaking.
@@RollingOrmondand you must have overinflated opinions of the merits of other directors
I love how 'human' Linklater's films are. The before trilogy really reminds me of my relationship. Boyhood is a masterpiece, it's a concept that is so unique and it really makes you feel like you've know Mason and his family all their lives. It feels personal and it's truly admirable.
Richard Linklater is a masterclass filmmaker with a wonderful filmography. I love The Before Trilogy, Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly, and Boyhood.
I love the way Richard's mind works when it comes to his ideas
In my opinion there is no director who can put a soundtrack together like Linklater
Man, the Dazed and Confused soundtrack is wonderful, but I think that also Tarantino, Scorsese, PT Anderson, James Gunn and Edgar Wright have the ability to put together songs to create a beautiful soundtrack
A Scanner Darkly should have not been skipped. One of his greatest films.
I could listen to him talk endlessly
Wish he'd discussed A Scanner Darkly, one of my favorites of his.
His movies are so good, I don't have a favorite
Man, this should have been like 15 minutes longer.
Waking life is one of my favorite movies that I'm convinced is going to stick with me for the rest of my life. I've watched it so many times now and every time I rewatch it I get something new out of it, it's like finding little hidden gems.
As an Austin resident since 1978, he nailed late 80's Austin. And Dazed and Confused was like looking into a mirror as a class of 1976 high schooler in suburban Texas. Everything he's done since has been brilliant. Thanks dude for giving us such great art.
Dobie Theater in Austin played Dazed every night at midnight in 1993 and it was glorious.
I want to go to there!
Man, I wish he explored A Scanner Darkly
Waking Life is the best movie and I can prove it with science.
Brilliant mind. One of the best filmmakers of our times.
He made some of my favorite movies of all time; Dazed and Confused, School of Rock, and the Before Trilogy.
Everybody Wants Some!!! is one of the most delightful, charming, brightening movie I've ever seen
One of the ultimate feel-good films
I remember when my mom told me about Boyhood, I think it was a few years before the movie was set to release. I’m about a month younger than Ellar, I was so eager to see that film. Most anticipated movie for almost 4 years lol and the film absolutely blew me away.
I'm the same age as "Samantha" and I felt the same about the release. I grew up in Austin Tx, and boyhood really captured some of those feelings about growing up in the early 2000s.
Boyhood is the best movie I personally have ever watched in my life, and I thank you for this gift mr Linklater.
this man is the reason I wanna do film, much love.
People don't realize the genius of this guy; he is a unique cinematographers that makes introspective high art films about life, without the the density and slowness of typical of high art; the Mozart of cinema, and I mean it.
Not really a frequent comment poster, but thank you for uploading this. Very interesting and inspiring.
This man is a legend.
Dün "Before Sunrise ", "Before Sunset" ve "Before Midnight " filmlerini bitirdim. Filmi izlerken Âşık Veysel'in şiirini anımsadım. Onunla da bitirmek istiyorum.
Uzun ince bir yoldayım
Gidiyorum gündüz gece
Bilmiyorum ne haldeyim
Gidiyorum gündüz gece
Dünyaya geldiğim anda
Yürüdüm aynı zamanda
İki kapılı bir handa
Gidiyorum gündüz gece
Uykuda dahi yürüyom
Kalmaya sebep arıyom
Gidenleri hep görüyom
Gidiyorum gündüz gece
Kırk dokuz yıl bu yollarda
Ovada dağda çöllerde
Düşmüşem gurbet ellerde
Gidiyorum gündüz gece
Düşünülürse derince
Irak görünür görünce
Yol bir dakka mıkdarınca
Gidiyorum gündüz gece
Şaşar Veysel işbu hale
Gah ağlaya gahi güle
Yetişmek için menzile
Gidiyorum gündüz gece
Such a great writer/director
Boyhood is one of the best movies ever made. It’s actually a marvel that it got done.
I hope to see Villeneuve, Nolan and Edgar Wright on this next year
i diiply lauvit
I hope to see him and Denny Co directing something. That would be a once in a lifetime experience. Truly.
Usually when they have a new movie coming, this is just part of promotion. I don't think these 3 have any movies coming out soon
@@AllTheArtsy Next year Nolan has Tenet, Villeneuve has Dune and Wright has Last Night in Soho.
We want a Before Quadrilogy in 2022, Richard. Pls make it happen😍😭
Could have watched this all day had there been more for each film. Linklater is such a great philosopher who just so happens to use film as his medium. Always been an inspiration for me as a filmmaker. Can't wait to see what he does next.
His voice and character on waking life are forever etched in my memory
Thank you thank you! One of my favourite filmmakers of all time
8:44 the connection bt Before Sunrise and Waking Life BLEW MY MIND. If you’ve not seen both, rewatch the one and then the other.
Thanks for this.
He's a pretty underrated director very interesting style but also diverse
I don't object to this video being 15 minutes long as much as I object to it not being an hour and 15 minutes long. And you didn't ask him about EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!! or IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO LEARN TO PLOW BY READING BOOKS?! Dadgummit, Vanity Fair, get a film geek to program these interviews!
It sounds silly, but School of Rock is the reason that play music, guitar specifically. It came out when I was 8 years old, and it completely changed my perception that you have to be a certain age to be a musician. I had it in my head that I was too young to try to learn an instrument, and seeing the kids in this movie not much older than me just shredding on their instruments was very inspiring to me. I have Jack Black, Mike White, all the kids, and Richard Linklater to thank for jumpstarting my love for playing guitar.
One of my all time favorite directors. What a treat
his movies are timeless
He's so chill
Y'all must be feeling so proud of yourselves with these sideface (profile) shots.
"Sideface" is an amazing term! It's hard to tell if it's just a layman's pure and simple way of describing something, or an industry veteran's cheeky nickname.
@@officialgoogleyoutube it also sounds like a movie name, wait does it exist?
This is really interesting and kind of inspiring
I see so much of all his characters in this guy as he talks. Truly one of the best directors of all time
Great guy, always fun to listen to. Some amazing flicks under his belt.
I wish A Scanner Darkly was mentioned, that one is CLASSIC.
A great filmmaker with a great career, can't wait to watch Where'd you Go, Bernadette
One of the best contemporary directors... and one of my all-time favorites.
@8:14 one of my favorite films and soundtracks. Beautifully well done and extraordinary executed. 👏
YES, KEEP DOING IT WITH MORE DIRECTORS, PLEASE! I’d kove to see some featuring Scorsese and Tarantino, since their films are being released this year and they are gonna be in lots of promotions. I’m pretty sure their videos would be around the 40 minute mark lol
this guy views the essence and potential in a way that few other directors do. its very great to see
He is one of my all time favorite directors. Probably the best at making movies that are realistic to everyday life.
Damm, was hoping he’d talk about Everybody Wants Some
Joey Clemenza I actually enjoyed that movie.
One of his best !!
Great video!!
Everybody Wants Some!! Is so underrated, awesome movie.
One of the most versatile directors of our time.
I wish he talked about Everybody Wants Some!! it’s the spiritual sequel to Dazed and Confused
such a wholesome guy and interview
YESSS THIS IS THE VIDEO WE NEED AND WANTED YESSS
Hands down my favorite director
One of the best movie makers of our time. Can listen to him for hours.
Lovely, unique and ultimately humane filmaker - Legend ; - )
I have so much appreciation for this man because of his great cinema.
My favorite director, Tape is great and by far his most underrated
Gotta love that Shonen Knife shirt at the "Before Sunrise" set
I wish this video was like 20 minutes longer. I would’ve loved to hear him talk about A Scanner Darkly or Last Flag Flying, etc
School of rock, an absolute pleasure to watch. My favourite among his movies.
Love his films.. Probably my favorite director.
One Of The Coolest Directors Ever
Skipping right over my favorite Linklater film, Everybody Wants Some!!
Absolutely brilliant director
Waking Life...Oh boy what a classic!
This interview would have been better if it took 12 years to make.
Or, if the interviewer was Errol Morris :-)
man, bernie was really cool, wished i heard what he had to say
ogtoigby i was so impressed by how restrained Jack Black was in his performance. He’s always been the over the top kind of guy, but Bernie showed he could act.
Linklater is my favorite director. Wish he wrote that book he hinted at.
I remember being a teenager interested in animation just trying so hard to get my hands on whatever software they used for Waking Life because I loved the style so much
His movies are the best I love his stuff so much especially suburbia that is one of my favourite movies ever, this guy is a genius and he has made some of the best movies ever created he deserves so many awards
I live in a small town in Texas and I've been trying to escape to Austin for years, Linklater is probably my biggest inspiration as a 21 year old wannabe filmmaker.
"... that's when I know I'm in really good territory... when I can't really explain the film I'm working on."
Love this guy
Slacker is an amazing film that's very underrated, but I do love dazed and waking life
This could have been 40-50 mins long and I would have watched and enjoyed every second of it.
This guy got me into cinema!
U r the coolest director
hes one of a kind
Waking life, school of rock, and dazed & confused are three of my favorite movies for vastly different reasons
I love this man!
i love this man & his movies so much
He didn’t talk about Everybody Wants Some that’s my all time favorite film.. either way great video super talented guy
The true Dude - imagine Linklater working with Jeff Bridges
Boyhood! IT TOOK 12 YEARS TO MAKE!!
