    I would’ve messaged your contact and touched base and let them know your feelings about the situation, that you felt like you were being auditioned for the wrong role, and how the audition was and that you think that it was the wrong format for the character you were supposed to audition for. Obviously a little too late, but that is what I probably would’ve done, after the audition was over.

    These kind of audition practices are such a red flag for me in terms of access on set ! I would be worried about their commitment to providing access requirements and looking after their cast and crew properly on set when their casting process is this inaccessible and demanding of their actors (who they know will have specific access requirements and barriers to working in this way !!)

    • @kellylyons1038

      Of course acting skill has to be part of the casting process, but what we are all questioning is why, when the actors are of similar/comparable skill, go able-bodied actors keep being chosen before disabled ones. Similar to how the debate is going on regards to characters' vs. actors' ethnicity.

    I have a strong suspicion that you're correct in thinking you were not at the right audition. The fact they were so behind and had to insert you out of order likely means they didn't communicate to the director et al. who you were prior to dropping you in. Very strange!

    You always have the option the moment you feel something is off, to simply ask. Just to make it clear if they're auditioning you for the right part, because you were told it was going to be different and don't want to waste their (and your) time. Don't ever let someone rush you past your own sense of judgment of the situation. If they don't have time to even confirm why you're there, they probably aren't worth the trouble.

    Well, at least you didn't faint like I did. I started hyperventilating during my audition (I was auditioning for Babette in Beauty and the Beast) so I grabbed a cup of water and asked to be excused for a second, and they said yes, so I started to leave when I fainted. I hit my head on a chair and spilled my water on my face, so I woke up quickly. My mom heard the thud from the other room and came rushing in. She brought me outside and sat me on the curb and I just started bawling because I was so embarrassed. Luckily, they let me come back the next day to finish my audition and I ended up getting the part.

    Molly! I loved this video! I am a young actor (though I'm not in the professional industry yet... hope to get there soon), and this was actually kinda relateable! I did a bad job on my first actual audition for a local theatre production. Surprisingly I still got in though. It is hard going into theatre as a neurodivergent person. I have ADHD, so it takes me longer to learn things. Most of the time I got yelled at because I was still confused on the instructions. All I need is repetition. Thanks for spreading awareness for the disabled community in the entertainment industry. LYSM!!!

    My partner and I used to live in LA and have a lot of friends that work in the entertainment industry, and some of the stories they told us were WILD. Many auditions/shoots are super chaotic and disorganized (even the ones with high budgets) and stories like you just described are not uncommon.
    I find it pretty heartbreaking the amount of bad treatment that talent has to go through in order to catch the 'big break'. I understand that acting/modelling etc. is someone's passion, but is it really worth it when you get so little respect as a person? It's an industry that treats people like they're disposable because so many people are lined up behind you, desperate for a chance. There's literally no incentive for people auditioning to be treated well. I have friends who are pounding the pavement in Hollywood and I'll be honest: It's tough to watch, especially when they're such ambitious, intelligent people who could find success in other industries.

    Having worked in the music industry instead, this still was absolutely crazy to hear, even if my worst audition was being chastised for being a half hour "late" when in fact I was a half hour early, and even had confirmed the time the night before. It however was probably a blessing in disguise; imagine the frustration if you did have to work with a company who are so disorganized to have an audition run like that.

    Here’s an idea, have blind people play blind roles, have disabled people play disabled roles, have curvy people play the role of curvy person, (shallow Hal as a example deeply effected me negatively because I’ve always been bigger. The whole premise behind the movie caused so much pain and distress. They literally got the THINNEST woman possible and threw a horrible fat suit on her)
    And if they need specific races for a role FIND someone who is ACTUALLY that race play the role.
    It really shouldn’t be this complicated.

      Yes, they typically hire normally pigmented people for PWA or Person's with Albinism also known as "albinos" Not a word the community generally likes. It is frustrating on so many levels but it is also frustrating that they only write characters with albinism as horrible evil villains. They rarely show the vision problems most have either. Although, I have okay vision other than one eye points in the different direction.

    • @fidelianerina
      @fidelianerina 2 года назад +8

      Ya, it always confused me why they don't get the right person to play the right role. Like I could understand maybe they couldn't find anyone cause maybe a person to fit that description didn't audition, but I feel like that doesn't happen often in professional work. I feel like there's always someone. Even if it comes down to two people, and one isn't as good of an actor/actress but they fit that role it should go to them, not the person with more experience. Like Molly mentioning loosing a role of a blind girl to a sighted girl, sure maybe that person is a better actress or has just done more work or would need less accommodations, what ever it may be, Molly would have been better suited because she is blind. She can give a much better representation then someone who is sighted.

People are becoming more accepting of others and the internet, as non-perfect as it is, has helped provide a platform for marginalized communities to share their stories and truths. One day we’ll see proper representation in media, we just gotta do what we can to put the pressure on the industry to change

      After a certain point, this undermines the whole idea of being an actor.
      Should British actors play American roles? Should actors never train for roles with different accents?
      Can black Americans portray black African characters?
      Can Molly portray sighted characters?
      The answers to all of the above should be "yes". What's most important is that role is well written and acted, and that they cast whoever is best suited to it. Characters should be well researched by both the writers and the actor portraying them, but they don't necessarily have to check every box and literally BE that character.

    I audition for commercials very often and I have had improv auditions but rarely. I've never had an experience like that where they gave me sides and then then it ended up being improv. My craziest audition story was probably when they didn't give us the sides until we were in the virtual waiting room and before I could even download them they threw me into the audition room and I told the guy running the audition that I didn't have time to download the sides and he said "too bad" and then didn't do anything to help me get the sides. Improv is pretty common at commercial auditions so I always go in knowing it’s a possibility or even expected. And sometimes they will specifically call in people with improv experience and then tell us not to improvise at all. It makes no sense! Hardly anything in this business does. Sounds like you did the best you could under the circumstances. Congrats on the audition! And you’re right - getting that far on all your auditions is rare. You’re doing great!

    I am an actor and my entire channel is about it! I have been acting for around 14 years now and have done lots of commercials. Most commercials are cast locally unless the actor they are looking for is hard to find. It is true, commercial acting usually has a VERY quick turn around and you do not hear back unless you get it. My worst experience at an audition was one where the actor opposite me, was SCREAMING during the entire scene and we did it twice. The actor continued to scream even after the director asked for a more toned down take. I booked the job and they did not. It is important to take direction. :)

    When I was younger I wanted to be an actress and I took all sorts of classes and workshops, and I even majored in Drama, but I always had such bad anxiety surrounding auditions that I haven't been able to pursue it. All that is to say, this story gave me secondhand anxiety 😅

    Wow. So good you didn't get it. Any production that disorganized doesn't deserve your time. That's on them, not you. You rock. They ultimately most likely picked someone in LA due to time constraints.

    I honestly don’t believe that in the other audition the sighted person got the role instead of you! 😒 And it’s a bummer about this current audition, but hey, everything in life is teaching us something, giving us experience and preparing us for whatever comes next. 🥰

    Molly, it seems like you're being quite hard on yourself. Even though you say you don't feel bad about not getting it, you also say that you bombed the audition and describe how ill-prepared you were. I'm here to tell you that what happened through the audition process and the outcome was not a reflection of you, your acting, or anything else about you or your actions. I think what happened at your audition had nothing to do with you, and was really a product of some terrible organization and planning skills on the part of the casting company. In fact, you were very prepared, according to the information that you had and despite the timeframe, and you were incredibly gracious with accommodating their 'tight time line' on several instances. Let's give credit where credit is due and stop holding the shame & blame that doesn't belong to you. You did amazing under pressure, even when they turned you upside down! We should all be laughing at the impotence of the casting company, not you!

    It bothers me when sighted people get blind roles. I used to model and lost a gig for a disabled inclusive shoot for being an albino to someone without albinism they made to look like they did. I don't understand

    I am not an actor but I would recommend reading or listening to Jenna Fishers book The actor's life: A survival guide. It has opened my eyes to all the things an actor goes through to be successful and it also got some really good life advice in general.

    Has anyone seen the movie "See For Me?" Its a movie about a blind girl with RP with ONLY LIGHT PERSEPTION. Its literlly Molly's diagnosis! I feel like the audition could have been that movie too. It literally just came out in 2022 also. Its about a blind girl that has to escape a home invasion using the app "See for me" which a blind person uses a FaceTime like call to have another random person see for them to help them around in Unknown places. Its really good so far, I had to stop midway through to comment this lmao. Has anyone seen it?!

    Girl, YES. I have been on so many weird auditions and honestly just looking back at them now have me laughing!! But it’s tough in the moment when you’re being professional and really wanting the role, and it’s just so chaotic. I once waited 6 hours (not even kidding) one night in LA for this horribly organized improv commercial audition, and was thrown in a room with 2 other actors who also didn’t know what the heck was going on. I only felt bad because I waisted 6 hours of my day for that crap. Loved this story time!!!!

      I have an honest question (I don't mean to offend you, just genuinely interested): Is going through that sort of crap really worth it? I used to live in LA and had a lot of friends trying to make it in acting and entertainment. A lot of the stories they shared were very disheartening, as it seems as though there's a general lack of respect simply because talent is viewed as disposable and there are so many people trying to make it. These are intelligent, ambitious people with college degrees and a lot of transferable skills: I understand and respect that acting is their passion and what they want to do with their lives, but it seems to come at the cost of having to sacrifice self-respect and put up with crappy treatment.

    • @LauraWichman
      @LauraWichman 2 года назад

      @@bethowens8863 Overall, in my personal experience, no. It is VERY disheartening. While I had some amazing opportunities that I love to look back on, it just became too much for me both physically and emotionally. I stepped away from the big stuff and began doing smaller things like short films so I could still enjoy acting while living more of a “normal” life. :) most of the people in my past acting classes are now doing different things (even those that made it onto the TV or big screen!).

    Hi I have auditioned for mostly theater roles which I like because you know whether you got it or not because there’s a casting sheet at the end after a couple days and I have done an improv audition for that it’s one of the few improv that I’ve actually done so it was scary but since it was in person all they did was they put us in groups and gave us a very like vague plot and we talk for about 30 seconds and then go into the scene and then we also did walking where we walked from one side to the other and we were given a kind of like a mythical creature or an animal so that they could see like our adaptation to like movement and like our ability to feel weird
