December will be the month you learn to draw, this is IT. 30 days to go from "trash" to "alriight alrright" :D Took a while to put this plan together but I'm pretty stoked with it, it's quite solid if I dare say so myself. Give it a shot! Results guaranteed.
i really apreciate all the work you do, Marc! I want to become a 2D animator and for this i really need to start from the basics, you're really helping me out on this one and i'll definitely come back here in the last day of the month! Sending love all the way from Brazil
Sounds like a great challenge for Inktober!
Will I be able to draw from my imagination with this?
as a child we had drawing and painting class but had no formal education just free drawing. I drawn and coloured pretty good from a perspective but the lines were all shaky and interrupted uggly on some level but the overall curve plus its raughness that way carried across a nice communication of emotions. But it was just a few things my own which was there not a lot of complex things like some artists.
How would you recommend doing this in tandem with your digital art course? Should I do both simultaneously? Do this first then start the course?
Even as an intermediate level artist, learning the fundamentals of art is always a nice treat to revisit.

Yep, they are great warm-up exercises
For anyone who needs it, I recommend pairing this video with proko’s “6 steps to draw anything.” It will really maximize these exercises :).

The most important thing I got out of this video is that it takes time to develop even the most basic skills. It also illustrates how seemingly insignificant steps can lead you to becoming much better. I thank you Marc for being realistic and appreciate the tutorial you've put together, it's wonderful!
30 days... DONE!! This is probably the biggest streak I've ever done drawing!! My skull on day 30 turned out so great!! I will keep this streak up with my own artworks/studies! I will work hard to achieve my dream of getting extremely good at art
how's it going now!?!?!
Heyy!! It's been 3 months.. How u doin??
4 months later. Update? :)
@@De_Gecko I have improved a lot! Tho last month I haven’t drawn as much because of school, but I’m back at it now. Comparing my art 4 months ago to now feels so fulfilling
thats awesome to hear! keep it up!
i just started to get into it after years of nothing, and have a lot fun so far :D@@aizuni
I'm on a streak right now. Before I couldn't even keep up with drawing constantly for two days, but something clicked and I've been drawing now regularly for 2-6 hours a day for 3 weeks straight! I love so much your videos, and I really do consider getting into Art School once I'm gonna resolve some stuff irl. Thank you, Marc. Anytime I feel confused or worried I go watch your videos. Like your videos keep empowering me to keep forging my art skill.
I'd like to know what clicked, I'm in a similar rut. seems everything is overwhelming and time just keeps passing without me doing anything.
Really cool, good luck:)
very similar experience for me too... suddenly hit with the opposite of art block like a month or so ago and been drawing for hours each day. i've never drawn this much in my life and i'm in my 30s. i think it's a drive to improve and seeing improvement occur so quickly due to how many free resources there are on youtube.
@@adetooni same, but i making myself to do atleast one figure drawing per day
@@adetooni start by drawing atleast an hour of line, shapes, curves… etc and create a habit from that. Check off on a calendar each day you do and don’t pressure yourself, let it happen. Once you build a momentum increase your standard to X a day on your calendar first and then when you feel comfortable increase your drawing and study. Be relaxed and have legit fun otherwise it’ll feel like a chore. Lastly create actual goals you write down and complete 10ish a week to motivate you to keep going. This is guaranteed strategy that has made me draw more and better within a month.
Hard to believe I've actually been doing this for six days straight already. I usually quit after two days, but the fact that it only takes me 2 minutes is so crucial for allowing me to slowly build a habit. Thank you, Mark!
I generally fill a whole page with drwings of the fundamentals (ex. full page of half cut spheres). You might find it (if you have the time) to help crispen your lines and build muscle memory. Good luck on your art journey!
Likewise, I'm usually trying harder exhausting myself as I'm use to the montra working harder equals better results something I got from sports as a kid, but mental tasks often require habitual ritual of the basics applied in creative ways

Today marks the end of my 30 days. I really couldn't be happier with the results. I never thought id be able to draw a skull that didn't look like trash but here we are.
Day 13 twisted boxes made me have a lightbulb moment about how to place the torso in 3d space for my figure drawings, thanks for this!
Tomorrow will be day 30 for me, I'm also someone with ADHD who has a hard time building habits so this was a great way to get started with building one, Thanks, Marc for putting this together. I'm challenging myself to build a habit for 90days and if I've been consistent after that I'm gonna start your art course!
It makes me so happy that these steps are seemingly very easy.. as someone who also has ADHD habits tend to seem a bit too overwhelming and Impossible! This was great!!!
As a stranger to you on the internet, I wish you good luck! I hope you make it through your 90 challenge and start an art course! I'll be cheering you on in the background. 😊
Here to see if you did it!
instead of doing one every day, considering trying step 1-7 every day for 7 days. you'll notice every day the tasks become easier.
Once finished week 1, try to repeat step 8-14 every day. if too hard? consider adding the older steps also to your routine. for me this really works as I can tell the improvement every day, and you've got a little more to do, rather then drawing one of the steps and then going back to whatever else you want to do.
Thank you! Then whatd you prefer, digital or traditional drawing for apply this exercise??

I went to art college in 1989 for 6 months. Got kicked out and never picked up a pencil since. Now its 2023 and I'm missing art. Found this and learned more in 10 minutes than in 6 months at college. I only want to draw characters (I play tabletop RPG's) but studying form like this will really help. Personally I'm a fan of acrylics but watercolours are good too - if this works out I build up to painting guitars. But.... baby steps. Draw a hand first, eh? OK....
Reached day 29 and I'd never expected to draw such a hand on day 1, very very satisfied! (I'm a beginner, started drawing this summer and this routine is very useful, well done!)

Just finished thirty days after twenty+ years of putzing around 'teaching myself' how to draw and WOW! Sure, my skull wasn't half as good as yours, but it was WAY better than I could have done thirty days ago!
The "you again" cracks me up everyday, as it accompanies me along the 30 days lol
On day 3 today. As someone who used to draw quite a bit 15-20 years ago but stopped drawing for the most part for the last 10 years (other than a sketch every 12 months or so). I never considered myself 'good' but could pull off something reasonable from time to time back in the day. Even knowing I'd have to start from scratch, I've been humbled in my ability to even draw a goddamn circle... I've put in about 30 mins to an hour every day so far since starting to draw again (3-4 days ago), circles are haaard man... I've got a LONG way to go....

how is it going? i been doing the same and it was a mess 😂
Any update on your progress?
I can see how this progresses and it would be cool if you made this a series
Hey there Marc!
Thanks for this awesome vid! I'm an absolute beginner with digital art, this is very helpful for me.
I'm currently at day 14, and I see huge improvement. Not much in the eyes of a pro of course, but at least I'm starting to get used to my drawing tablet!
Thank you once again!
Hi Marc. I recently finished this set of exercises, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it and appreciate you putting it together. It started off simple and small enough and got progressively more challenging but not to the point where I felt overwhelmed. I was really encouraged and surprised at how easy the 1- and 2-point perspective drawings were for me to grasp. Thank you for taking the time to make this; it was absolutely worthwhile.
Day 30, finished! Thanks so much for this challenge. It really helped me build a habit of drawing every day and I think my understanding of space and shapes has improved tremendously
I'd like to point out for anyone looking to get into this, but you suck hard - it really doesn't matter as his pinned comment says. I have barely done any drawing my entire life (and I am highlighting this because a ton of people say this despite drawing for years in their early adolescence or something or other) and people always poked fun at me when I "had to" for party games or such *all in good fun to be clear.
And although you wont necessarily make it look as ideal or even as you see other people do it, you will doubtlessly be less shit at it after doing this. I've so far done half of it and although I still think it looks horrible, its without a doubt better than before I started. Do give it a go, its been a great experience.
Can confirm I have evolved from garbage drawing into "oh, I think I know what that is supposed to be" which honestly is pretty neat considering the time/effort invested in this relatively short period of time. Granted, if I put in more time this last month it might have been "alright" at this point, so if you still wonder if you should do it - its still worth it even if its just half an hour a day, you will be better by the end.
My toxic trait is trying to finish the entire challenge in one day-
Update: I got to day 10 in a single day and maybe I will post the rest of my progress if I continue the challenge tmr
Update 2: I got to day 15 the following day. The most difficult exercise was definitely day 13. Also the day 15 exercise really helped me connect a few dots. Once I realized I could make shapes with the simpler shapes I started making this drawing of a gadget that had buttons and switches just with the simpler shapes. And it actually looked good and not weirdly Two-Dimensional. I think day 15 really opened my mind a quite a bit. I can’t wait to see what I can do at day 30 :)
Update 3: today I did day 15-20 and I felt like what I drew today wasn’t as easy and didn’t look as good as I wanted it to because I kept noticing things wrong with my drawings. But that’s the thing, I actually NOTICED what I was doing wrong and when I compared my past sketches to the new sketches I realized I WAS IMPROVING despite thinking I got worse. I’m going to use this as motivation to continue!
Update 4: I completed day 21-25 today. I only have 5 more to do and I think my drawing skills and overall drawing knowledge has improved! The drawings today were pretty easy tbh and it was cool to use the different perspectives
Ive always been so overwhelmed on where to start! I've been drawing in my free time for a while but ive kind of hit a wall. This helped me so much!!!! So glad I found your channel
I love how Marc videos are so synchronized with my art needs im actually a noob but your videos really inspire me to achieve my art goals, love from Colombia bro
I started doing this schedule and it has been super helpful and enlightening, even for a seasoned artist. I cannot stress enough the importance of fundamentals, which is exactly what is taught here. So many beginners jump straight to more complex stuff and then they struggle. I did that too back in the day, and I am still struggling because of it.
Also, when I said in a few Discord servers that I'd be staring this, and that it'd be an opportune moment for some folks, who have always wanted to start drawing to finally get to it. Eventually, we had like 10 people doing this together, and we shared our daily exercises and gave eachother feedback. Its been really fun!
Thank you for this, Marc!
Noob tip : every following day ; do the previous days excercise as well , so for example: on day 10 , you should be doing 1+9 practices
I've been doing this for 2 weeks, and wow, I was surprised by how day 15 came out. I just dedicate like 30 minutes a day (including my prior exercises like lines, laces and such), but I have seen some progress. And it's interesting how the things you start with, that seem so basic, end up helping to further build more complex things. By getting used to drawing boxes and circles, I could make day 15 quite good (it's far from perfect, but it's better than I could expect from myself!). Let's see how it all ends in day 30.
How was it??
So how did it go?
He just quit like everyone does in the end 🤷♂

Can't wait to come back at the end of October and say I've actually finished a course/challenge for once. Thank you for everything you do!
Had to start two days later because I was abroad, but 30 days later (Oct 3->Nov 1) I've officially completed the challenge.
Thank you for this Marc. Not only did you help me brush up on fundamentals (I feel much more confident now), but you also provided a much-needed distraction for me during a time where life was difficult for me. It's amazing how much intuition and understanding these seemingly simple exercises built up. I feel like I understand how it's all connected now, how spheres combined with squares are cylinders, how straight lines interact with each other and the importance of perspective.
who else got stuck at "draw a circle" LMAO
Hi. I started! I'm using the prompts, this video, Marc's IG and references to help me get along but I'm doing my best to stimulate my visual library and rely on myself and my memory as best as I can. I give up when I can't recall anything. All the best to everyone! Let's get this done!
Edit: Now that I'm done, I learned that my visual library exists. I was able to draw using my imagination. I also learned that art is fun.

The exercises are just enough for you to learn a little bit each day while also feeling successful about it.
It's a really cleverly thought out thing that gets you to regularly draw (sustainably) and really teaches you something.
Also, I learned that after like 30 years of living, I've never properly understood perspective until I started this and asked "why" so often until I got to the bottom of it. Most people learn to draw a cube in school that's technically impossible (or at least really far skewed) so it's interesting to feel the synapses connecting and starting to think in 3D, not just see. ^^

Thanks for releasing these types of videos!
I just finished this challenge a day or 2 ago, and I must admit that, despite not being WOW the best examples for the tasks, I feel like I did quite good. Repeating these for at least half an hour a day really helped me understand how some things work, making it easier to portray certain things. I also did this during the first month of the 1-year challenge and I gotta say, these two complement so well. I'm super glad I gave this a try, finally, after years of not daring to draw. Thanks prof fr fr 😭💞
I will try this starting today.
I think this isn't just to learn to draw but also the most important part of drawing. Learning and drawing everyday making it into a routine of your daily life .
Thank you for being so accessible and free. I appreciate all your advice and help! Best teacher ever.
Really awesome to be relearning some of the basics. I am on day 7 and I noticed already a few changes in the arts I do. But for the sake of it, I been practicing those with 0 stability on my pen where I normally would have like 15, so I feel this helped a lot with my control over the stylus.
This is great. My drawings are still pathetic. But after practicing for a while they look a lot more like what they’re supposed it than I thought I could make them. It’s a great confidence booster, keeping me from getting discouraged. Thanks a lot.
Lovely! Looking forward to trying this out. I'm watching your Chanel almost since I started my journey as an Illustrator, and it's always a joy to see that a new video from you came out, even if it gets slightly repetitive sometimes. :)
Using this as the first month of the year plan of yours + gesture drawing and copying. 2024 is the year I'm learning to draw (and get myself a bronze age bodybuilding physique). Happy New Year.
honestly, these exercises are genius. It's clicking in my head constantly. On the verge of going crazy.
This is awesome! I often feel overwhelmed with the amount of practice I should do. But this 30 day challenge is something I can see myself actually finish and improve my fundamentals. Thank you!

A week ago, I completed the challenge, and it was a really fun exercise! The progression in difficulty is pretty well handled, and I didn't think I'd manage the last one so well! The hardest was definitely the hand holding a cylindre though ^^;
Thanks for this vid though! You should make a compilation with sample works from people who participated into that little exercise, and maybe even critique some of of the common problems! =D
Day 23 and 24 were surprisingly a lot of fun. I feel like I have a much better understanding of shapes now than I did three weeks ago and I'm so excited to see where I'll be by day 30!
Having a blast! On Day 14 and I haven't drawn this much since I was a kid! Thank you for this! But goodness, that difficulty curve when you hit Day 13 with the twisted boxes is no joke like you say in the video!
Man thank you in general, your channel has helped my art improve so much faster, and generally I learned I love learning about art, esp anatomy side haha, as much as I love how much it improved my work too.
All of your videos have been extremely helpful. The only thing slowing me down is my good old laziness. Hopefully, your schedule will create some habit out of me!
I’m very guilty of not studying the fundamentals as much as I probably should….I’ll definitely try to dedicate a lot of next month to them but most my free time this month will be going to Halloween theme work
This actually helps you think and analyze objects like an artist, by far one of the best videos I've seen.
I've done it! Finally ended something I started. Thanks Marc for that great challenge and for discipline it gave me.
"Psh. Yeah right, how hard can one sphere be--" -me, before finding out how hard one sphere can be
I’m glad you said “only spend 30 seconds to a minute” after the first few steps, I initially had a panic attack thinking I’d need to spend hours drawing circles!!
Yeah, this was definitely an easier start than attempting inktober.
Amazing series! Looking back at the drawings, I can clearly see the improvement over the course of the challenge. The regularity and the logical progression sequence work wonders. Thanks a lot for putting this together!
Just finished day 30! This was a great way to break in my pen tablet; I ended spending a good amount of time on some of these exercises. Very proud of my improvement, will definitely be looking forward to the 1 year exercise plan next!
" spend as long as you need to feel satisfied "
Me ( a perfectionist):* gets stuck at day 8 for 4 months
I am not an artist, but from everything I've seen across dozens of tutorials and talks from professional artists, it's clear to me that human proportion and expression are everything.
The human eye and brain is wired to spot incredibly subtle nuances in human proportion and expression. My theory is that if you get these 100% correct, everything else is relatively unimportant.
Think about it; Thought experiment:
Imagine a simple pencil sketch of a person, but all the proportion and expression is *perfect*. From that point on, it doesn't matter what colours you use, light, shading, etc because those all just enhance what is already there. Anything you do from that point is simply a matter of taste and composition, but the piece will still look credible.
Now imagine another pencil sketch, but the person's proportions are off, more than slightly - Let's say noticeable but not terrible. No matter what you do to that with colours, shading, lighting, etc, the piece will always look bad, as if "polishing a turd". I've seen many pieces of art from beginner and intermediate artists like this - In those cases it's really clear they've messed up the proportions and are trying to compensate with other elements.
Put simply, from all my research it's clear to me that what separates experts from the rest is that they absolutely nail proportion and expression to perfection, or close to perfection.
So as a complete novice, I'm convinced that to effectively learn to draw, I need to focus 100% on body proportions, then body and facial expressions. Only when I've got that to an excellent standard is it worth learning all the other elements. Put another way: If I can't draw the shape correctly, then colouring, shading, etc won't save it.
Not a professional artist just been drawing for awhile so take my reply with a grain of salt. you are mostly correct on proportions and anatomy. they are normally the first thing the eye detects because humans know what it should look like and will just look off if it's wrong. It still is important to study color lighting and other fundamentals because even at 100% correctness if the lighting and other things are wrong it will some what look abit strange. But they are something you normally study after anatomy proportions and perspective because you can normally slide with just those.
I finally did it ! I've started first october and now i'm done. I like the challenge and im very proud of what i learned. Thanks !
I did something like this on artschool. I miss it sometimes that i dont have to challenge myself. But i also understand that i only getting better if i do challenge myself. But it was a very inspiring video to start drawing again thanks!
Thank you for making this video!!! I lost my love for drawing and this really helped a lot!!!
Glad it helped! ty!
I'm starting this today, and my sphere is everything but a sphere. I'm exited to see what it looks like on day 30. Will update here :)
Edit: I've updated on a few days. Meanwhile I finished the challenge, and it really changed a lot. I can see now the value of constructing complex subjects into simple shapes and the lessons from day 1 - 30 really helped with that. If you are wavering, this is your sign to try it. Never imagined to draw things such as a hand and a skull on day 29 and 30 so effortless. Thanks Marc it was a great journey. :)
Edit 2: My notes on some of the days:
I'm on day five and the spheres got a lot better. I'm thrilled with the progress so far. Trying to fill two pages with each exercise. (Not the shaded sphere. This was one page as it is really complex)
Finished day 10. One third of the way 😊. I have a lot more confidence in my lines than at the beginning. And my spheres resemble spheres much more than on day one.
Onto day 15. Half the way there. I can see clearly that something changed. It is easier and easier to draw accurate lines and see the shapes more clearly :)
Finished day 30: Everyone! Give this challenge a try. It will be fun and at the end you will see, that a few things have changed. Really liked the outcome with the skull. I constructed it from simple shapes (boxes, cylinders, spheres) and the lessons from the days before really made it easy to find the right forms and proportions.

Same things happening with me😊

Thank you for the video, hopefully maybe October is my month as I’ve been drawing/practicing for 6-8 hours. I’ve been saving everything I get to be able to get the equipment needed and hope to get your Art School next year during my spring break.
Thank you for the tips and youtube tutorials. After moving to different countries it kinda helped me to find consistensy at least in something and I came back to drawing after many years.
I woke up today and tought "It would be cool to learn how to draw" and a couple hours later, *BOOM* this video appears. Amazing timing paired with an amazing video.
I'm only on day 1 and I teared up a bit because I had given up on drawing many years ago until my fiancè, who's a pretty talented artist, told me to try again and that is never too late to go back. I then discovered this video, drew those circles/spheres and... I damn myself for giving up, but I still got something. Thank you for this video, and sorry for the bad english.
2023 is almost near and im planning to do this starting on the first day of 2023!! I can't wait!!!
Hi Mark, I am an aspiring artist and I really enjoy learning from your videos, thank you :3
May hand on day 29 was definitely not as clear and nice as yours, but I am shocked! My hand actually looks like a hand! I’ve never been able to do that before in my entire life! I’ve taken two classes on art, one specifically for drawing, and I have to say, this video has taught me more than both of those classes combined.
Okay. Let's do this! Going to edit it every day. Let's see what progress is made (if any.. I'm pretty unspectacular when "art" is the subject.)
Day 1: My circles look like pizza pie that I've made homemade myself, in other words, they aren't circular.
Day 2: My circles are starting to look a little like actual circles. Not too much trouble drawing overlapping circles, but definitely complete beginner level.
Day 3: I had to go back and practice staying in the lines with curved scribbles. A few circles turned out nearly perfect, however, you could see perspective.
Day 4: Vague shapes and shadows took place. Hatching is evil. Circles and curves still getting better with more frequency.
Day 5: Discovered 2 major reasons I'm struggling so much. 1, not used to looking at a screen while drawing (with a pen tablet). 2, my work station is VERY poorly set up. Including things moving around while I draw.. more than I realized... lol Otherwise, my lines and curves aren't too bad with cylinders.
Day 6: Better. Everything. Had the tablet at a different angle. Attaching even ends better.
Day 7: One week. Day 7's exercise was hard only because I find it hard to draw a straight line while looking at a screen. So.. more practice with the tablet. Which is making me think that I need to make a few improvements to my setup, practice the most basic fundamentals until I get used to the tablet in general, and then start over. We'll see. Otherwise, the exercise wasn't actually that hard. Except hatchlines, but I think that's directly related to the previous statements.
Day 8: Eyeballs weren't too hard overall. Hundreds of circles are helping. They aren't perfect but they're noticeably better. The curved hatches are tough.
Day 9: I ordered a stand for my pen tab. I discovered that slight angles let me draw more accurately and I'll probably spend a good deal of effort getting used to drawing while looking at the screen. Then I'm likely to start this over. I'll be practicing mostly circles, arcs and curves, lines and parallels for a bit. When I start again, I might delete this and start over. Not sure yet.
Heyy how it's going
Still doing better than me. I am on day 4 after practicing about 2 hours a day and still practicing circels. Yesterday before going to sleep my thoughts were how to make such a perfect sphere. :D
You sir are a blessing--- I've been meaning to get back into drawing (so I can pass into an art school :'] ) But i didn't know where to start. so THANK YOU SO MUCH ;^; Best art teacher ever
Huge video to get the basics back. Thx for sharing. Much respect .
hello my friends, i have officially managed to complete the entire 30 days, i want to say, it really does work, i really had a hard time with 3d volumes but this overall made it way easier to understand while still providing enough challenge to be interesting.
Do note that i didn't do all 30 days in a row, and that's fine, you gotta remember some days you have less motivation or you're more busy, what's important is you get back into it, results guaranteed
for how much time did you drew each one per day?
@@Flemingluiz-mr9ep some days i did it for 30 minutes some days 2 minutes most days like 15-20 minutes and i tried to have fun with it
@@calamity7068 alright so i will try to do this around these times. just wanted to know for how long i should do each.
I'll likely be coming back to this video so I made a quick checklist for the class for myself and anyone else that is interested.
Don't forget to like the video and share it with others. If you are new to this channel, he has many great videos you should check out whether you want to work professionally or as a hobbyist.

Thanks so much Marc you always keep me interested and motivated to pursue art when I’m down! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Im a bit late but this is an awesome class already, Ive been following your general schedule already and that has been such a help thank teach!!
I'm currently on day 8 and my linework is already coming out a lot better than when I started, and I'm already doing pretty well with shading as well
Did you actually do all these exercices day by day, or just in one go?
Thank you for everything you teach, recently I’ve been struggling and haven’t had time to watch your short lessons, do your classes or draw it’s terrible, but I’m tryna get back into the habit thanks to these classes again
This kind of easy introduction and practice to fundamentals is exactly what I needed! I'll be doing this but I'll do all of these thrice per day, and then again after I've done them all.
I looove you.
That's it, I just wanted to say that.
Cause you're a gift to this world.
Keep doing this professor!
