- Although they are two completely separate people, these accomplished teens share a body and have just two arms and legs between them.
Born in 1990, the girls have been brought up in a small, tightly knit community in Minnesota, almost completely protected from prying eyes and inquisitive stares. To their friends and family, they are distinct people with very different personalities, needs, tastes and desires. But to the outside world they are a medical mystery -- particularly given the fact that they can do virtually all the same things as their friends, including playing the piano, riding a bike, swimming and playing softball "Their personalities make them inspirational," says their mother Patty. "They never give up; anything they want to do, they go out and do it."
The medical world is keen to find out how two separate brains and nervous systems can work in such a perfectly co-ordinated way, but the twins and their family have always resisted non-essential medical tests. "The family want to treat them as though they are just like everyone else," says Joy Westerdahl, the girls' doctor, who admits that it is a mystery how their unique physiology functions.
As they enter adulthood, the twins are likely to leave the haven of their home town and face the wider world. In preparation for that time, they have taken part in this intimate documentary to show the world what it is like to be joined for life.

I’m from Minnesota and have met the girls. They are absolutely amazing individuals. Totally down to earth and friendly. I met them at a Cub Foods and they said “Hi” before I even had a chance to decide whether I wanted to interrupt their shopping. We chatted briefly and I was blown away by how well they did everything together and yet held separate opinions on everything. I think if this situation happened with almost any other set of personalities (the girls and the parents), things would be much different. They have made the absolute best of this situation. They are all amazing.

I had conjoined twins. They were conjoined in the chest and looked like they were hugging each other. Unfortunately they passed away when I was about 5 to 6 months along. I think it would’ve been very hard though because they were conjoined in the chest. I’m really glad they shared information about them and their lives. I will always have a special love for my babies on this reminds me of them

My heart literally melted for their mother. She has faced so much hardship with growing them, the feeling and pain clearly visible on her face.
That was fantastic to watch. At first it's definitely strange to see just because it's so rare, about ten minutes in and I just saw 2 young girls living a totally normal life. The family, school and community are downright inspirational, loved how fiercely protective everyone was. Amazing.

Respect to these amazing twins, the parents for helping them lead a normal life, the friends the teachers the town. Truly remarkable story and one I am glad to have witnessed through this clip. I think it helped that they grew up in a small community and went to a small Christian high school where most people had known them all their lives. They ventured further away for college but still made friends easily.

They have so much connection and love for each other and it’s amazing how great of a team they are.
Abi and Brittany have such a wonderful disposition. I think growing up in a small town was a big benefit. I wonder if they are still teaching at the same school? I love how they embrace people and will answer any questions you may have, and would just like if strangers would just treat them as normal people in society, with respect and love.
At 24:14 you can see that when Brittany can't say what she wants to say and messes up, she uses both hands and puts them on her cheeks giggles and shakes her head. Then a couple seconds later Abby does the same thing. That's incredible! It's crazy how they can each use both hands to do their own hand gestures.

When I first saw their story and followed their journey, they were very smart, incredibly beautiful, and successful. They are now thriving school teachers and will not let any abstacle stand in their way. I am like them; don't stare just ask. It makes them feel very uncomfortable. I love that they shared their journey to the world because many don't know what it feels like to be a conjoined twin.
When they take a test, each one only has to memorize half of the study guide.

The doctor is a horrible actor. This whole show is not reality. Funny how nobody in the public has once ever seen or filmed the Hensel twins out at the store or anywhere for that matter. Watch this show again and see if it adds up. There's a lot of creepy sexual undertones throughout the whole show especially the driving instructor part when the camera is in the back of the car. The whole show is completely fake and very creepy.

There WAS another set of twins like this who survived and lived happily for years; Katie and Eilish Holten from Ireland. Unfortunately, they underwent separation surgery at age four, after which Katie died. There's a documentary about them here on RUclips.

Well that is what a lot of what this story is about. It is HARD to imagine. Even impossible. My sincere respect for these individuals for managing life like no others. They deal with challenges no one else can imagine. Hopefully they also have joys we may never experience. That would be nice..

Despite all the curiosity from the academia, their mother strongly insists that people don't have to be curious about how precisely the twins behave on a neurophysiological level, and the twins should be respected just the way they are. On the other hand the doctors are very curious and eager to know how all that works, yet they are very respectful with their and the family's privacy that they don't cross the line and make unnecessary approaches.
I think all these people are at their best with their roles, hoping the best for the twins each as parents and researchers.
As an identical twin myself, the twins are so inspirational to me! And also as someone who wants to be a parent and a member of the academia, I have much to admire from the people around them.
They are a beautiful miracle. People suck for taking pictures of them without their permission.
Yeah cuz they're not really performing a local freak show they are just out there living their life like any other human being. If they wanted attention from cameras they would draw the attention themselves by calling out to the gloting people, but they don't so they obviously don't wanna be filmed or photographed by randoes on the street. They ain't exacly wearing a clown costume in order to stand out and they can't help they were born like that 😞

These two had such a low chance to survive the first few days of their life and now they are 32, working as teachers and prove all the expectations wrong. So amazing! Although would like to see a film version one day, the docu already shows it all.

I taught Japanese twin girls, who had a non-identical triplet sister. The twins used to get the same sums wrong in Maths, even when in different rooms. They put the same answers in the Science Museum.No-one could tell them apart. Their triplet sister felt excluded from them.The strange thing was that when I taught them to read and write in English . Mikako had tiny cramped writing, but Amiko had large sprawly writing. They went back toJapan when they were 10,so I don't know what happened to them after that.

Broke my heart when the mom started to cry. You are an AMAZING MOTHER and I'm sure they love you more than you could ever imagine. But I understand, as a mom, you just worry about any pain (emotional) that they will be exposed to in life. You feel their pain before they feel do. It must be so hard, but just like they are the only conjoined twins to survive this long, you're also the only mother who has raised these medical marvels and was able to give them the best, most normal life possible. I have a tremendous amount of respect for you and their father.

Yeah ... I'm not sure who I'm more worried about ... their Mum or the girls. Their Mum is internally concerned about societies reaction to the girls. She has done so much for them, and so has their dad. I am not sure I would have been able to cope.
I am more worried about their Mum. Any percieved slight towards the girls affects their Mum intensely. The worry all over her face is affecting me deeply. She probably didn't want to do this documentary ... but it is a fantastic thing that she summoned the courage to do it.
When people can see the true personalities of the girls and how they function in society and at home, and what the girls find acceptable and unacceptable, this documentary will have reduced casual cruelty towards the girls considerably.
I know this documentary was made a long time ago ... I hope their Mum is a little more relaxed now.

Loving carrying parent always make a world of diffrence in any family unit. Brittany's and Abigails parents are two amazing commendable people.

I think they have learned to mirror their thought patterns... I mean there is not much choice for them, right? They need to be thinking „in sync“ all the time, and basically have 2 brains that are „in tune“. In many ways they ARE just one person...
