    Gary Richrath, in my opinion, was one of the most underrated Guitarist of all time.
    Had on of the greatest Guitar tones in Rock and Roll.
    I'd love to see a video or a story showing or telling what his actual Guitar Rig Rundown was......I'd kill for his tone.
    Such a great loss to Rock Music when he left or was kicked out of REO and such a loss to the world.
    R.I.P. Gary

      From what I've read Gary only ran his Les Paul "amped" straight to double stacked Marshalls. No frills!
      He just knew what he was doing. Like Bruce Hall stated, his tone was not a mistake. He was looking for it and found it.

      I had the pleasure of seeing REO during the Hi Infidelity tour and lucky enough to be front row directly in front of Gary.
      I kinda laughed...he had 2- 412 Marshall Cabinets on stage.
      From his Paul, the only thing I saw him plugged in to, was a Crybaby Wah.
      Behind his Cabinets, all I saw was an Amp that, what would look like, today's Marshall DSL 40 Watt 112 Combo!!!
      Great show, great tone, GREAT GUITARIST!

      Dave D'Amato, or Amoto....however you spell his last name, the current REO Guitarist, comes pretty darn close, not only in Tone, also in COPYING Gary's links and tone.
      But let's face it....there was only 1 Gary!

    Gary was a joy to watch and he brought a lot of fun and good times to a lot of people. His music transcended REO, well it was REO for a very long time (pre-ballad o'rama) and when he took it out on his own, small venues, seeing his fans and friends rockin' out, well it was like he was 23 all over again. More polished sure. Better looking, IMO. Yet he had stage sense and a genuine star quality that started with that grin that would inevitably turn into 1000 watts of a true and pure Richrath smile. It was good to see him having fun again. Enjoying the music again. Being himself again. I'm sure I'm not the only one who missed the way he rocked REO pre HI. As Kayla said below, it was as if he put his soul into his Les. Maybe he did. However he did what he did, however he made people love him the way that they did and still do is classic and timeless...and such a tribute that it would be so wonderful if he knew how people really felt. If only the tour of 2016 had come to pass, the world would probably be a better place. Then again, the world is a better place because Gary was a part of it, even if it was for far too short a time. Such a kind and loving soul and good and caring man. Loud and Proud, Raw and Real...so Richrath. God Bless G.

      Donna R.E.O. goes clear back to late 73 or early 74 for me. T.W.O. was the first album that I ever purchased with my allowance or hay bailing money. I loved that album and still do, I also still have it and it is in good shape yet.
      I really do miss seeing Gary playing!

      monmixer Sure gotta agree. So long as he shows up to play, performs well, doesn't sell everybody's instruments, or get the band jailed...who cares if he parties? He was REO' s left ventricle. I don't know details but I think they did him wrong&think Kevin's ego played a part. But I'm the first to admit there's much I don't know.

      I always wonder how Kevin got to be boss. I'd bet he said "Gary goes or I'm going solo." and the others chose Kevin. Gary hinted to that in an interview. i don't think the band would have kept going strong either way.

    Saw him on this “Tour.” Was sooo disappointing. He was out of control, and was so loaded he couldn’t play his original solo. It was very sad. Glad he eventually sobered up. I truly believe he was trying to get his health on track and was headed for an REO reunion tour of some kind but the process killed him. Miss his soulful playing.

  • @Downsdddgh

    Too bad Gary wasn't a singer.
    Watching him as the leader just doesn't feel right.
    It's hard to be Batman when you were doomed from the beginning to be Robin.
    There's nothing wrong with second place.
    Gary never learned this.
    Spending a career in the shadow of Kevin Cronin isn't a bad gig.
    Many musician's would have died for it.

    • @Altnature
      @Altnature 7 месяцев назад +3

      Have to admit Kevin helped a lot with commercial success but it wouldn't have hurt for him to share the spotlight. REO was a group, not Kevin's backup band. Charisma isn't Kevin's strong point.

    • @Downsdddgh
      @Downsdddgh 7 месяцев назад

      @@Altnature you're missing the point.
      The front man had to be musician, singer, and showmen.
      It was Kevin's job to be all three.
      He wasn't trying to hog the spotlight from anyone.
      On an airplane you have pilots and cabin crew.
      Do you want the stewerdess flying the airplane ✈️?

    • @CarylKoch
      @CarylKoch 3 месяца назад +1

      Probably the best perspective I've read on the dissolution of Gary and Kevin. Never thought about it this way - that it was Kevin's job to be musician and showman. Kevin was a great showman - and in doing that it freed up Gary to be the incredible lead guitar man he was. Batman and Robin - what a great analogy. I think Alan's exit also had a deep impact. Together these guys rocked so hard. Six Days on the Road, Like You Do, Golden Country, 157, RTSO, and so many more. I loved their music - still do.

    • @Downsdddgh
      @Downsdddgh 3 месяца назад +2

      @@CarylKochThanks for your kind words.
      More than anything else, Kevin probably was the iconic Rock ⭐ that he became because he had an icon backing him. He would be the first to tell you.
      He would not have had the success he had had it not been for the other's.
      He was not going to be Elvis, Sinatra, or Humperdinck.
      All the parts fit perfectly.
      Well, like the REO Speedwagon that was their namesake.
