ABSTRACT ART: Not As Easy As It Seems…

So your kid can paint that, right? Does your kid know about composition? How about visual balance or color mixing? White space? Value? Even though kids' art is some of my favorite art; its lack of self-consciousness, the wonderful sense of freedom... I'm not a kid. So not only do I have to learn painting techniques and gain mastery of art skills, I have to try to unlearn - in the zen sense - at the same time, so I can channel that childlike sensibility.
Watch as I paint two abstract pieces while keeping in mind all of these criteria. I build layers, edit and try simplify busy areas with pushing and pulling a variety of mediums.
I also have some handy tips for working on paper and show you exactly what supplies I use.

I watch a lot of art videos on RUclips. Realist painters take me on a familiar journey to an expected destination. The journeys are nice, but generally predictable. In contrast, abstract artists take me to places that do not exist, through interesting places to unknown and unique destinations. Thank you for this ride and for the views along the way. Where you decided to stop was a good ending. I have now subscribed and look forward to sharing more excursions.

Abstract is sooo hard. I always thought “oh I can do that!”…until I tried…now I paint only abstracts, find it more interesting and challenging than trying to represent a scene or an object…my camera will do that! Thank you for sharing and being an inspiration.

I currently paint abstracts, almost daily. To the artists who don’t understand why…. I love the unpredictability of the outcome. It is problem solving of color, pattern, composition, and design. It is the ‘what ifs’ that intrigues and challenges me. The push and pull of what marks to keep, which to push back. I was a traditional landscape painter for 25 years and became bored with painting trees, mountains, etc… abstract painting is not easy! I love watching you work!

Beautiful! I find abstracts incredibly hard as I have the compulsion to make them into something. Keeping white space is impossible😂

I saw a lot of “finished” phases as I was editing and thought maybe I should have stopped at those moments. That’s why taking breaks and walking away is so important. And yes, there is so much courage and bravery involved in this process. Thanks for the nice comment.

Question: when you were ‘blotting’ with white paper, what type of marker were you blotting over, and what were you trying to achieve? BTW, love both of these and know that I’ll need a lot more patience for a better final outcome!😊
I think you’re referring to the Posca paint pen. But often I will take another piece of art and blot it over a wet part of another painting to help it dry faster (picking up the wet medium) and at the same time I get an interesting mark transferred to the blotter paper. ☺️

Never seen anyone struggle so much
I’m curious. Do you see the creative process as a struggle, or just feel the need to make an unkind observation? Hopefully, you’re simply a highly acclaimed painter who can produce a masterpiece in under 20 minutes! If so, kudos.

I don't get this, it can be done by a child, it really is just ugly and a smudgy mess!!! It makes no sense and is for people that really don't know how to paint!!!! Why do people think that smearing and scribbling with paint is nice????
I can see why you might think that. However, I challenge you to try - just one - and then get back to us.
@@KitchenCounterAbstract I think anyone can smear paint on a canvas and call it abstract. Honestly it has no meaning!!!! It is probably just fun and relieves tension.
@@KitchenCounterAbstract I would really hate to waste my paints acrylics or watercolors. I think I will just stick to my beautiful watercolor art!!! It has so much more meaning and is really beautiful.
