Mike it is really good to see your fig orchard starting to produce. I have been growing figs in Pendleton, zone 7b, outside in the ground for years. They survive nicely, but don't produce figs. I have been very successful growing figs in self-watering pots and getting great production. I bring them into unheated space after they are fully dormant and then bring them out in the spring after hard frosts. I have 14 fig plants in a 25 x 8 foot space on my driveway. I am also getting awesome results from a hydroponically grown Petite Negri fig. I have over a 100 figs on that plant and it is by far the most productive fig I have. I would be glad to share information with you or anybody else that is interested.
Yes, please! I need all the help I can get. I'm actually thinking about culling the herd and getting rid of some of these varieties that don't produce. I'll look into Petite Negri, as I don't have one yet. Good to know it does well for you there in 7b. Are you referring to Pendleton, Oregon? If so, we passed through there and stayed the night on our way back from Arizona last year. I loved the Blue Mountains.
I really need to get on that again. We've missed some of the ripening fruit due to life circumstances and mainly how busy I've been with this house build, but I intend to get back into the plants and orchard videos once this is done.
Oh, that took me back to a great memory. Years and years ago, when I worked at the phone company just outside the Seattle area, a fellow employee had a large fig tree and she would bring in figs to share. Soooo yummy!
@MikeKincaid79 It's a great memory for the fig, and your enthusiasm for figs is contagious. Your daughters are sweet, and it's nice how you do this with them. Have a blessed week ahead.
Different Jim but I do remember my Dad watching that show when I was a kid in the 80s. I’m sure I could get you a cutting or two. Remind me in a few months when cutting season is underway.
Thanks for being specific on location and zone. So many do not do this and many new gardeners are often mislead. We've tried to stress this much more recently. Keep up the good work!
I appreciate that you notice that. It’s always been a pet peeve of mine when people post these wonderful pics and videos and get people excited about growing the same things but they don’t realize it will never work in their area. I’ve been announcing my area and zone for several years now, just for that reason.
I love what frame stabilization is doing to your barn in this video. For those of you who don't know, it is the sort of effect you get from certain mushrooms.
Been waiting for this. Was telling a friend about your taste test of those figs you were sent a while back and your propagation videos. No figs here yet. One day... Good to see your girls helping out.

Mike, I enjoyed seeing you and your beautiful taste testers enjoying those figs. I got a kick out of the answer to your question, 'How does it taste, your daughter's answer was, like a fig'. 🤣😂🤣Ally and Emily are growing up and I bet they are more than ready to move into their new rooms. They are so ready! That's all they talk about now. Yeah, Ally, the oldest who said 'it tastes like a fig" is a real intellectual type. She has a lot of confidence and just tells it like it is, without sparing anything, haha. She always makes me laugh at her responses.

No idea how it's called there but my grandparents had several of those fig trees and they called them "honey drop" 😊 the Italian honey we just picked it from the tree when the honey was coming out of the eye 😅 Oh the memories you just brought me 😍 Thank you ☺️
Mmm! Glad you shared with the girls. I have a ginormous brown turkey in ground and just purchased 3 new varieties this spring (I will keep these in pots). Time to start watching all of your fig videos lol On another note: Can't wait for the next house update!
This time of year I always get excited to see what the figs will produce. The house is coming along slowly right now. Interior paint is getting done now and so far it looks great. We’re getting a little behind because we haven’t picked exterior paint or lights yet.
For whatever reason I am still single at 45 years of age & I am going a couple of fig trees which are a striped tiger or "Panache" fig which are a couple of the rarest fig trees in the world. They were only cuttings about 1 year ago but now they're 2-3 feet tall albeit dormant since we come into spring in a fortnights time over here in Australia. I have recently purchased a couple of black mission fig cuttings which are meant to grow the sweetest figs,I would also like to get a dehydrator so I can snack on them instead of eating biscuits. I have bought a fig from my local supermarket which tasted kind of like a guava. Yes,I haven't been able to get onto your form of daughters who aren't even the same as yours in Australia because they aren't knowing that I grow fig trees & other fruit trees, maybe I didn't get onto them whose a Schmidt or a Quaid or something, they don't like me !
They are doing very well. Good to see some figs battling it out for the taste test. I always brought it up that I wanted some fig trees but they always got voted down. I love figs so maybe someday. 😊
I should start including them more now that they're older. I know a lot of channels include their kids but I always kept that to a minimum to protect them. They're getting older now and Lord knows they are becoming more independent.
I understand your concerns. I think if I had daughters their ages I would get them martial arts training for self-protection. I would have benefited from it when I was young.@@MikeKincaid79

They sure are growing! And Camelia, Camelia, Camelia (shaking head), you are family. If you want some Takoma Violet cuttings, you just ask. I'll send them this winter. Remind me in November once they're dormant and I'll send you some.
Mike, the fig man I know that you love figs as your 2 daughters are enjoying them , like berry as make fig jam maybe your wife can make them, awesome video!😉👍
I love your videos so so much, they make me want to get up and go go go, I just picked some figs yesterday, black mission, and I have also finally found a new variety to add to my collection it is olympian, and it is a fast grower. I am sending my love to all of you and best of luck on that house , it is beautiful💖💖💖
I love your upbeat attitude Glenda. Seems like you’re feeling a little better. Our Black mission finally kicked the bucket but I’m OK with that. My Olympian is just about done ripening a huge fig and I’m looking forward to trying it for the first time.
My brown turkey figs are producing, my other fig tree that was labeled as a Brown turkey fig is actually a Conandria fig and is just delightful, it looks a lot like your green fig. So now I dont know where to plant them as they are both still in pots. My yard is small. The front yard may need to yield its grassyness to make room for two fig trees!
This was a good year for my Desert King fig and Opal plums. The DK was dark and dense and sweet. It tasted more like a mission fig than the watermelon figs I have tasted before. My Opal plums were crisp and juicy and 24-26 Brix.
That’s for sure. These figs seem to be doing better and better each year. Some of them anyway. Looking forward to seeing them produce 100 figs per tree like I hear some people talking about.
A friend of mine has a historic farm over here in Gig Harbor, i dont know how many fig trees she has-or varieties, but the ones that just finished up are called Vashon Violet. Interesting about Tacoma Violet, must be sisters. 😊 Im planning our annual farm tour and a big thing along with environmental sustainability education is working with "Conservation Futures" with some of our beloved spaces & farms-it sounds like your neighbor would have been a good candidate. I know people gotta live somewhere, but some spaces need saving. Glad you got cuttings.
I'm going to go with you either missed that ripe one on the Tacoma Violet or on purpose missed it. I didn't... HA! But, I heard the freezey damage about the Improved Celeste, but man, the ground looks like it might need a little more of that two part H and one part O stuff. I see some limp, curled up leaves. But, that's just from a video looksee. Plus, I kinda know that you seem to know what yer doing. So, are you gonna sell cuttings of that "Jim Wilson" or even some small 4" or 1gal rooted plants? I'd be interested to add it to my collection.🤠👍
Cold = less flavour. Same for whisky. But having them a day or two in the fridge to dry is a good thing. Then you take them out and let them warm up to room temperature.
Lovely video with your beautiful girls. Thanks for sharing your fig tasting. Really it's funny because I just had 2 fig bars from the dollar general and they were terrible. LOL NOT Fig Newtons!
We're in 8b in sw washington and the only variety we have that thrives is the honey fig...lots of lbs every year and they are the easiest to root from cuttings that I've found
Are you talking about 'Lattarula' AKA 'Italian Honey'? I agree though, so many varieties don't seem to perform well here. I'm giving serious thought to getting rid of many of the varieties that don't do well, keeping only the varieties that grow well and fruit here, and keeping just a couple of the more exotic varieties for a greenhouse.
Haha, I did! It was hiding under the leaves and for whatever reason, I didn't notice it while filming. We then went on a 4 day trip to the Oregon coast and just got back on Friday. I started editing this video this morning and saw the ripe fig, lol. I ran out to see and it was too late. It was all dried up and shriveled on the tree. There are a few more that are starting to ripen now and you can bet that I'm watching that tree like a hawk now.
Do these figs have wasps? My grandma had a huge fig tree beside her house that had so many we couldn't keep up with them. We used to climb up in it and just pick and eat. It was one of the most heavenly experiences and remains one of my most favorite fruits. It freaked me out to learn later in life they might have had digested wasps in them (don't know what kind hers was).
We don't have the fig wasp this far north. That's why it's a good idea to have breba producing varieties in my area. And you're right, they are such an awesome fruit and tree.
Do you have any “purple” or “gold” figs in your fig garden? Developed from LSU, supposed to be some of the best, IDK, I’d like to hear a comparative review with all your fig trees. Will definitely subscribe and hope to see more.
I have an improved celeste, which I think is from LSU. I also have a Hollier that hasn't produced figs yet but it's only a year old. I would love to get an LSU Tiger.
I water by hand. We have hoses out there. I really need to set up a drip irrigation system for both orchards. Sure would make life easier. To tell you the truth though, I enjoy watering by hand. I listen to podcasts and it gives me a chance to look everything over really good once or twice a week.
Ive only had dried figs and I guess fresh are out of the question in my area Way too cold Hey Mike stay safe from too much rain because of the tropical storm Hopefully you'll be far enough away 🇨🇦🦩
I love dried figs and would like to dry my own here eventually. Many Canadians keep figs in pots in a garage through the winter and bring them out in the spring. You should be able to get some fresh figs that way. I keep hearing about a tropical storm but it's been so hot and dry here all summer and we haven't seen any rain really to speak of. the forecast shows nothing but sun for another month so I guess we're safe from the storm.
I really have no idea. I’ve heard several thoughts on it but in the end, I just like how well it performs in my cooler area and how good it tastes. Of course, taste is subjective.
I'm on the west coast too! Western Washington State. I'm assuming you mean the west coast of the US and not Greece, lol. I'd love to hear more about your fig. Are you up this far north or down in California. As you know, that makes a huge difference on how it'll grow here.
@@MikeKincaid79 Yes Cali. Years ago we have a fig tree from the island our family is from in Greece and my fig tree went nuts and grows like in the garden of Eden.
@@MikeKincaid79 We're in San Pedro Canyon, maybe 100 miles southeast of your old stomping grounds :) Summer is always hot and dry, but they get plenty of water. Fires in Cali and to the north of us didn't help. Everything stopped growing after summer began. Rain is a good fertilizer but it's been dry yet, just a few showers while Cali hogs it all from Hilary. ! Even the cactus didn't make a lot of fruit. Bummer.
I've never had a fresh fig only dried ones and I can say they are tasty We don't have the weather for growing figs You're the lucky ones having several different varieties I think you need a list for all the things you want to talk about pertaining to figs I need a chicken fix from Shellie Just one short will do Miss the beautiful rooster 🇨🇦🦩
I’ve heard that before. I do have an Olympian and there’s a fig on it that’s ripening. It’s a lot lighter green in color but I’m going to keep watching and see if they’re a match. We’ll see if they taste the same too.
@@MikeKincaid79 here are a few pics of one of my Olympian in ground breba from 8-5-22. drive.google.com/drive/folders/12LFieDC6_U9AqdxKoD1_2lsroF56TvY9
There isn’t anything online. It’s a really old fig tree that I got cuttings from across the street from me on a 40 acre homestead. I affectionately named it Jim Wilson, after an old friend in his 70s who grew up on the property and watched his parents plant it when he was young.
Totally off topic but I'm new to gardening. Can I sow all my seeds in milk jugs starting January 1st or do I need to purchase all the lights an heat Matt's. I'm zone 8a ft worth tx
You don’t need anything special for seeds. Just a well lit window and a warm room. For better growth, you could add a fluorescent t8 bulb over top of them.
Thank you, so does that mean only keep them indoor, because I saw a video where you left yours outside all winter. Sorry to keep bothering you with this, but I find your channel to be the most helpful.
I may have a few cuttings available this year. Remind me in another month or so. Olympian is a good one too. If you live in the PNW, get a Desert King for sure.
Oh Man too bad you don't have the name of that fig, looks so good, let us know when and if you are going to sell some of those , my fig tree is big , about 20 feet h , like 15 years old , forgot the name but is all green and the inside pink / reddish , smell sooo good but is not sweet enough :( and I get tons of them, every year produce about 800 +, this yea a little less cus I cut some branches last year and he didn't like it so much. ahh I forgot, I live near, Hello from Tacoma and looking for another fig tree for this crazy zone we have..:) I hear the celeste was good for this area but no so sure any advice? beside that one which one do you think is the best for here the NW?
I would say Desert King is one of the best and it sounds like that's what you may have. Olympian is pretty good here, as well as Celeste and Improved Celeste. My Takoma Violet is really starting to do well and I'm looking forward to that one too. Lattarula is a nice honey fig for our area. There are many more, just start collecting!
Fig are so popular in holy land Biblical fruit Adam & Eve covered themselves with fog leaves Jesus. commanded the fig tree to die because it didn’t produce fruit Even if analogy Very good 😊 fruit So much variety God has provided in his creation Mission and Turkey are my favorites!!!!
What happened? Cold? Too wet, too dry (which is Mikes issue in the orchard I think, which is hard for a fig, but when it's super hot and sunny, it needs more). Maybe Bugs, fungus, small tiny little single celled things, viruses?
Does your wife not like figs? I love that you include your daughters in a lot of your videos but the wife seems to always be missing. I have seen a couple of her videos so I don’t think it is a shyness problem. I am not trying to be overly personal and yeah it is none of my business but im just always curious when you do a family tasting video like this or the video where you guys went hiking and so on why it is never the “whole” family
I guess it does seem odd, without an explanation. The day we went hiking, my wife was working. The video was a spur of the moment thought once we got there and I’m glad I filmed it cause it’s good memories. As far as the figs, Shellie isn’t into them. I’ve tried to get her to eat them, and she has tried them a couple times, but she doesn’t like sweet things much (oddly enough). She’s pretty strict with her keto diet and feels good on that so I don’t harass her about it. I just eat the figs with the kids. We actually have a hiking video from years ago that we are all in. ruclips.net/video/EORJwhmg88Q/видео.html

Mike I still want that extra giant cutting I still have that loquat tree I’m local in rainier
It’s yours, just need to meet up. Been busy with this house build. Sorry Nate, didn’t mean to put you off.
@@MikeKincaid79 I understand
Do you have any “purple” or “gold” figs in your fig garden? Developed from LSU, supposed to be some of the best, IDK, I’d like to hear a comparative review with all your fig trees. Will definitely subscribe and hope to see more.
I have an improved celeste, which I think is from LSU. I also have a Hollier that hasn't produced figs yet but it's only a year old. I would love to get an LSU Tiger.
Hi Mike, very nice orchard, how do you water your trees in your orchard? Do you have water close by? Hope you have a great harvest. Best Wishes!
I water by hand. We have hoses out there. I really need to set up a drip irrigation system for both orchards. Sure would make life easier. To tell you the truth though, I enjoy watering by hand. I listen to podcasts and it gives me a chance to look everything over really good once or twice a week.
I want one
You've got it buddy. I'll get you some cuttings or work on an air layer for you.
تحياتي لكم من العراق ❤❤❤❤❤🎉
I lost the name of the book you recommended on soil microbes. Could you let me know?

Could that Jim Wilson fig be a GE Neri?
I really have no idea. I’ve heard several thoughts on it but in the end, I just like how well it performs in my cooler area and how good it tastes. Of course, taste is subjective.
If you are ever interested I would be glad to send you a beautiful Greek Fig tree from the west coast to see how it would do there.
I want to buy or trade for a cutting of the Jim Wilson as soon as available.
I’ll see what I have in cutting material once all the leaves drop.
Do you grow Olympian figs? I’m considering trying some in containers this next year, and I wondered what people thought of them.
I have one in ground. Got my first ripe fig from it this year and it was great. Definitely a keeper as it ripens in my area.
Got a mess of great figs in the breba crop, but thanks to the weird el nino weather the summer crop died.
Oh, that’s strange. Lack of water? Man, it’s been so hot and dry here all summer.
Bummer.
Their called desert king figs
I do have a Desert King but this is something different. They don’t even taste the same.
@MikeKincaid79 you're right. They look more like Turkish brown. I had that tree and last winter killed it
I've never had a fresh fig only dried ones and I can say they are tasty We don't have the weather for growing figs You're the lucky ones having several different varieties I think you need a list for all the things you want to talk about pertaining to figs I need a chicken fix from Shellie Just one short will do Miss the beautiful rooster 🇨🇦🦩
I tell her to get more active on her channel all the time. I’ll mention that you said something.
Based only on appearance, the Jim Wilson looks a lot like an Olympian breba
I’ve heard that before. I do have an Olympian and there’s a fig on it that’s ripening. It’s a lot lighter green in color but I’m going to keep watching and see if they’re a match. We’ll see if they taste the same too.
@@MikeKincaid79 here are a few pics of one of my Olympian in ground breba from 8-5-22. drive.google.com/drive/folders/12LFieDC6_U9AqdxKoD1_2lsroF56TvY9
Yeah, they do look similar. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on those two and comparing.
Will you be selling cuttings from the Jim Wilson?
I’m not growing it to sell cuttings but if you’re interested in this tree I’d sell a few cuttings. I’m not sure what the true variety is though.
No, that's okay. I'm glad you got some cuttings before they cut it down. At least that way, it's still going to continue.
@@MikeKincaid79
where can i get this variety of fig tree? i don't see anything online about a Jim WIlson Fig
How do we get a Jim Wilson, or do I just go with an olympian?
I may have a few cuttings available this year. Remind me in another month or so. Olympian is a good one too. If you live in the PNW, get a Desert King for sure.
@@MikeKincaid79 I’m in N. FL so I need a humid rain resistant variant.
Oh Man too bad you don't have the name of that fig, looks so good, let us know when and if you are going to sell some of those , my fig tree is big , about 20 feet h , like 15 years old , forgot the name but is all green and the inside pink / reddish , smell sooo good but is not sweet enough :( and I get tons of them, every year produce about 800 +, this yea a little less cus I cut some branches last year and he didn't like it so much.
ahh I forgot, I live near, Hello from Tacoma and looking for another fig tree for this crazy zone we have..:)
I hear the celeste was good for this area but no so sure any advice? beside that one which one do you think is the best for here the NW?
I would say Desert King is one of the best and it sounds like that's what you may have. Olympian is pretty good here, as well as Celeste and Improved Celeste. My Takoma Violet is really starting to do well and I'm looking forward to that one too. Lattarula is a nice honey fig for our area. There are many more, just start collecting!
@@MikeKincaid79 thanks for the info.

Very good 😊 fruit
So much variety God has provided in his creation

You are so cruel. Lol. My fig trees died 😢
What happened? Cold? Too wet, too dry (which is Mikes issue in the orchard I think, which is hard for a fig, but when it's super hot and sunny, it needs more). Maybe Bugs, fungus, small tiny little single celled things, viruses?
Oh no! Where are you?

Figs are gold here. I'll send you a picture of a lady that has fig trees as tall as pine trees.

Oh, like a brown turkey maybe? Who knows. It sure is good though.
