I did try grating the butter but it didn't work for me. The butter stuck to my fingers making it hard to spread. There were barely spots where the cake mix came out dry. If I make this again I will slice the butter into pats like you did. Thank you.

Thanks for letting me know how grating the butter works out--I'm sorry to hear that it didn't go as planned. Slicing the butter into pats is time-consuming, but I guess it's probably the best way to do it.
