@@johnny85er Actually, research seems to be that the (bass) 4th string that was added by Joel Walker Sweeney. The description is that "a fifth string" not "the fifth string" was added, to the 3 long strings and the thumb string, if that makes sense.
My brother had a copy of this on VHS from his banjo teacher. We grew up singing these songs. I became a big John Hartford fan because of this film.

That's one stolen credit that's been debunked. Banjo being originated in Africa/Jamaica. If true, it's truly an amazing correction.
