  • Our Baja Bug overland build gets a high performance VW engine custom built for it! We head out to Seward Speed Shop, talk to the engine builder about what HP parts he put in to it. We'll also see and hear it fired up for the first time! Then we bring it back to our shop and install it in the Bug. Not without a mishap or two though.

If you can’t do a roll bar cage right away because of $$ , a Truss Bar ( Kafer Bar ) is good. Braces to engine mount to the rear shock towers. Helps with high engine torque going up steep hills.

I love this Bug. I always liked the Bug Eye Baja's, much cooler than the Bugs with the lights in the Mudguards (Fenders). I do hope this stays as simple as is necessary and doesn't degenerate into a Wild Ride, love the simple approach. Keep it up.

I installed a high volume oil pump that had a oil filter attachment right at the plate by the main crank pulley which made oil filter changes really easy. I then eliminated that oil cooler inside of the dog house and routed the oil into an external oil cooler in front of the air inlet of the dog house for better air flow. By doing that, the oil cooler also help keep junk from entering the inside of the dog house. Many fires were started by dried up junk inside of the dog house.
    Happy trails!

I love it! “Depends on your definition of budget”. A budget is like art, it’s subjective. Haha. Keep it up guys I love watching your videos.

You were talking about a heater for the wanderbug. I was wondering if it was possible to use the oil cooler radiator (or one of them if you add a second one) to use as a heater. Some way to vent it inside when you want heat. Like an air box that has a way to change airflow to inside or outside by using a flap or something. Just a thought. Cheers.🙂

I think with watching this video, it would probably be a good idea to swap everything to a 12 Volt system.
You should also look at upgrading the transaxle to an IRS conversion for better reliability off road. You’ll be better off in the long run.

80 hp doesn’t sound like much but you also have to take in account the hp to weight ratio. Our VW bugs don’t weigh as much as your Toyota.

Hey an idea I did with my 73 Baja for heat while in West Virginia, was ran an external oil cooler and mounted it inside under the back window on a three speed fan. This way the fan blows the heat from the oil cooler into the car. Winter time in WV I would still have to Crack the window some because it would get way hot inside the car. In summer time move the oil cooler outside the car.. Also couldn't you have used the 180mm flywheel and clutch so you didn't have to grind the transaxle?

Funny, we thought of the same thing with the oil cooler! Instead we're going to try a diesel heater. Not completely sure on the flywheel. My engine builder did mention that the flywheel and crank where used together to get the proper balancing.

Torque is the force (specifically turning force) and horsepower is just adding the speed component. So you can have a strong horse with lots of "torque" and a fast horse with little torque but the speed makes the small fast horse rated more horse . . . . . if your strong horse have some decent speed where it delivers the force it may then even be a larger horsepower rated animal . . .
Horsepower is the mathematical equation of the torque supplied multiplied by speed supplied. [kW] = [N.m] x [radians/sec]
