Back in the 70’s, my history teacher owned a VW dune buggy made from car kit. It was pretty cool looking with an open fiberglass body. He drove it to school every day, rain or shine. He said the one downside is that large dogs would chase him and one dog tried to jump into the driver’s side. He had to use his left forearm to push the dog back out.

O man. This video brings back memories for me. A friend of mine got a 1966/67 beatle chassis from a scrapyard, someone already took the body off. This was around mid 80 ties. It had two seats, no belts, and NO BRAKES. And no body. Just a very underperforming handbreak was the only way to stop this contraption,. Somehow we got it running with the help of the local garage.
O boy. That thing (only the chassis) was peppy!! I drove this deathtrap and flooring it until third gear on back roads where no traffic ever came. Which was a good thing, as i had no BRAKES to speak of!
But hey, when you are 17, anything goes. That engine made a glorious whoohsing sound, when revving up (and flying) through the gears. Only a single port, but that seat really pushed in my back when fully accelerating. It was great fun...
I had way, way too much fun. And lived to tell. My friend only sat in the passengerseat once. I think you can understand why...
    Great job on the restoration!

I was lucky enough to work under a VW factory trained person who worked at the German factory during initial production of the VW beetle. I worked with him from 1963 till 1970. At first just parking cars and doing oil changes and greasing front ends. I ended up rebuilding engines and transmissions and working on all types of foreign cars. Mainly German but sometimes Italian, Swedish, British. The shop was Called Anton Henz Foreign car repairs. If you have any questions feel free to message me. Good video!

Hi. John from Norway. I`m 58 years old. Back in 1976 I was 12 years old and I met this wonderful weichle first time. We had only 3 boring channels on TV and boring radio. No ATV veichles. No cellphones or Internet. No Nothing for fun exept old mopeds. But there was old VW`s. So remove 30-40 bolts and we had what we called a VW Go cart.... Also called a `flundre`of its fish shape. It was totally dangerous FUN driving. Imagine bunch of young teenagers with no licence and tons of adrenaline roaring these things in remote roads. ( I never told my parents what we were doing). Dangerous and sometimes it went bad. But I survived and think back on the youth friendship and fun we had together with our `TOY`... Lethal toy.. Now over 40 years later I found by chance a VW project that will be like what we had fun with in late 70`s.

Remember lifting the body off an old 1950' beetle on the farm and racing it like that, floorpan and seat only, with a welded support for the steering column, across the fields. It was lightweight, so the 30hp were quite peppy and it was surprisingly off-road capable. Of course, we totally trashed it in the process....The dumb things we did....

    Hey mate.
I have to admit that there were times back when I saw you literally sweeping out the rust and squirrel sh*t from the car when you first got it, that you'd bitten off more than you could chew. You're not an expert, all you have is a little knowledge, tools and a heap of enthusiasm. But here you are, driving the damn thing down the street. Congratulations, you deserve a beer mate well done!
By the way - about the front seeing a bit higher than the back - if I recall correctly you have an adjustable front beam there haven't you? You can easily dial in the ride height once the body is on, so don't worry about that.
Also, aligning the front wheels is very easy, especially with the body off. There's a method using two long sticks and a pencil - I know that sounds like something off the Flintstones but honestly it works bang on and it's so easy. I've always done it on my bugs, and they cruise dead straight at 75mph with no judder at all through the steering wheel. I'm sure the method will be in the John Muir book or somewhere like that.
Again - congratulations, you've hit a fantastic milestone. Julian.

Watch that master cylinder link, nothing is as much fun as having it break in the middle. Feels fine one time, the next time it's as hard as a rock and the buggy won't stop - at all! The link breaks, falls to the floor then jams against the stop. You better hope your park brake cables are in good shape! After the pedal locked one of my cables snapped as I approached a busy section of US-1, from a cross street, after having a couple beers! Things weren't looking good for a few seconds especially with a pickup truck and a motorhome were crossing my path as I skidded my RR (only brake working now) across two lanes and steered into the median lane.

Once upon a time (early 1980s?), I had an old and crusty 1957 Beetle (yep, oval window) and I'd installed a fairly stout 1.6L Type 3 engine into it. Lightened flywheel, dual carbs, 009 distributor, ported heads, long tube exhaust with next-to-nothing mufflers. For the test run, I just used a hand-held string for the throttle. No brakes. The driver's seat was a lawn chair. Gasoline was in the windshield washer tank. Lined it up, pulled the string-throttle, and popped the clutch. Of course the lawn chair fell over backwards, and I was dumped into the rear of the car. The car eventually rolled to a stop. My friends ran up and announced that it had done a wheelie, with the front wheels leaving the ground by about a foot (30cm). Never drove it again, eventually sold it on.

    A Beetle without the bodywork.
    It's not noisy.
Disc brakes on all 4 wheels.
    Formidable!
    Greater stability.
This one doesn't rattle under heavy braking at high speeds.
And, rear attraction, uses less tires, because the weight of the vehicle is all in the rear.

The thumbnail looks a lot like my “go kart” of 55 years ago or so. It had been a rollover with the body removed. The original skinny tires slid sideways so well it might not have even been possible to roll it over again because all the high weight had been removed. Cheap, fun, fast. Good go-kart!

I just kind of stumbled into this video, but WOW that's some awesome work so far! Love how you were careful starting out and actually took the time to test the gears in slow rolls before going faster. So much care and attention to detail! I definitely want to stick around and see what this turns into at the end. Thank you for sharing 😃

I made a trike out of mine year's ago I used a springer old school front end with gooseneck drawback handlebars and I used and old Ford tractor fuel cell oh I had some fat tires on the back it was really a lot of fun to drive.
