    I was actually addicted to Runescape for years. That alone has made me terrified to even go near Warcraft, knowing it too would hook me and ruin my life. Game addiction is hard...

    I had to quit WoW because I drank every time I played it....which was 11 hours a day. So I went from a 90kg healthy martial artist to a 150kg video game addicted alcoholic. My money was spent purely on WoW subscriptions and Jack Daniels. I cant thank my parents enough for hiding my computer and sending me to AA

    I started playing during BC, met a girl just like you did. We messaged all the time, raided, BGed, even fished together in WoW. I used to wake up early to try to catch her online while we lived far apart. We ended up meeting up last year, and that was awesome. I know all her secrets and she knows mine. Now shes asking me for child support. I stopped playing since. Aloha

    I went through the same thing; lots of raiding, people asking about our guild (one of the tops on the server, though our server wasn't all that highly rated), taking vacation days to veg out and play WoW. There's really nothing to compare the social connections and interactions you make in WoW. It's not that they are the greatest form of human contact, but they are unique. If you join a guild early on, while you are still learning the basics the game, you may very well grow with several other players. People who you can really call a friend, albeit someone you've never met. Memories both good and bad will form, all in the confines of a video game. Sure the rewards of finishing a dungeon and collecting loot are fun, but they pale in comparison to the memories that are forged over time through playing with teammates and friends. Luckily for me, my server population died in MoP, and it was an expansion I didn't care for to begin with. Once all of those old timers had left, the guild fell apart and was eventually disbanded. Heck, even trade chat would be silent for hours during peak playing season. The game that I grew to love no longer existed, so leaving for me was much easier.

    • @espurrhappy1945
      @espurrhappy1945 10 лет назад +1

      I agree, the social connections that a person made when they first start and continue on with is what made it amazing, a similar thing happened to me when everyone just decided to move on, the only thing i regret is not having Facebook at the time to keep in contact with all the friends I had made. Good memories of epic times though

    I started playing WOW when i was 6 back in the early BC days (2007). I loved it, my dad introduced me to the game when i was just a kid and kept paying my subscription even though he knew i wasn't really making any progress in-game at all (Levels,Raiding,PVP). I remember one time in the Dwarf starting zone inside Anvilmar, i was crying histerically because i spent some copper on a sword and it turns out the sword model wasn't the same as the vendor's sword. My most memorable character was a gnome warrior called Gasketinhgyt, i'll never forget him. I basically was pissed one day and created a new character, i didn't really mind his name and just grabbed the keyboard and pushed every letter on it. Turns out the name wasn't that bad and so i just went with it and did the basic starting zone quests ETC. It was pretty hard for me because i was 6 and there was no quest points, you actually had to read what the quest giver said and follow his directions. I'm Venezuelan so it was a little difficult for me to read at my age in that time in English and follow all their directions to the letter. I sometimes spent days on just one simple quest. Meanwhile my dad already had like a level 60 hunter with weird spec combinations and full purple awesome pvp gear while i was just a level 11 gnome warrior with a weird name. It took me atleast 2 years to get my gnome warrior, the epic Gasketinhgyt to level 40+ and to farm enough gold for my basic mount. I was so happy and it was such a personal achivement that my dad let me stay up until 2:00 A.M to pvp and try my new mount!! When i was 8, back in 2009, i was so excited for Wotlk and since my dad already by that time had his hunter up to 70 with the best pvp gear i could try at once the DK hero class. I was so excited, the next day i went to best-buy with my dad and bought the Expansion pack. I downloaded it as soon as i got home and started playing my new awesome DK called Kellight, a human. I was pretty noobish back in the day and even though i didn't know jack about how to use a DK i still loved it because it remembered me of the corrupted arthas from WC3 and WC3 FT. It felt great and somehow i got my DK from 55 to level 80!!!! i was so happy, and i could raid, but sadly the shitty GS i had didn't even let me do some basic raids but oh well. I was in a guild called WOW The Musical (Shandris server), i hope they're doing fine and well because they are a very tolerant,mature but at the same time fun guild. I quit then came back at Cata, i didn't do much progress since i was still a young noob but oh well... Then came MOP, i was already mature enough since i was 11 or 12, can't remember. But i was inspired to leave the noobish path behind and start a new, hardcore, epic adventure to become one of the few pre-teen wow players that could actually make it to max level and get the great gear! I seperated from my dad's account and bought a battlechest (contains WOW,BC,WOTLK,CATA) for 20$ and started my new adventure, i went full on hardcore, i created a paladin, went retro and in JUST 5 DAYS i was level 50 filled with blue gear from LFG tool (Goes to show you how dumbed down wow has become). I was basically OWNING everyone in pvp when i reached level 60 (wich was like 2 days after i reached 50) and in one week i already had the best pvp gear had to offer for that level. Excuse my terrible English, (oh and this was all during vacation time) I'm a B+ student and i played WOW alot. Now i'm 13 and i've quit wow, maybe i'll come back since WOW was my childhood, if you made it to the end thank you for reading my story.

    I've been playing since vanilla and did something similar years ago...even went so far as to vendor all gear on every character and delete them... then I got the urge again and wrote to Blizzard to see if they could restore my characters and items. To my dismay, they could and did. A couple years later they added the Restore Deleted Character function to ensure I could never really leave again.
    I'm still playing. 6,100+ minutes played last week. If this isn't an addiction, I don't know what is. The stronger my characters get, the weaker I get in real life.

    I played the game for so long only to realise noone exactly is going to care about all my max level toons, or my arena rating, or anything that i've achieved on the game. So I took advantage of that period of time and cancelled my subscription so I could never get sucked back into it, the new expansion will soon be out. I refuse to pick it up when the time comes

    I purposely never played any games like this, any MMORPGs or whatever - it never ends. There's no goal to it. I like Singleplayer games. I knew a guy who had his girlfriend over and made her wait with his mother while he had a quick go on WOW. And my brother - addicted to clans, Garry's Mod, he has more friends on Steam than I have ever had. But it's sad, he wakes up at 4pm, stays up until 6am and he hardly goes out of his room. I dragged him on holiday with my girlfriend and he had a good time but I could just tell that he was wishing that I hadn't convinced him to leave his laptop at home. It's an addiction not as physically damaging as drugs or alcohol but still destructive. I sometimes want to shake my brother, tell him to snap out of it and start living his life, to get outside and have a conversation with someone new who isn't behind a computer screen but I know he'll agree with me and then go back to his damn room. My advice to anyone reading: if playing multiplayer games is your favourite thing to do - just stop entirely, you won't regret it. No one will ever lie on their bed, dying - grateful for all the time they spent playing World of Warcraft.

      +Jibriltz You could not tell what to expect in 20 years. So far we do less physical labor and more pressing buttons instead. Next step may be not to move at all. Cause our bodies just a machine to carry our thoughts and idea and feelings, find the way to move it without physical effort and in no time we would stop moving at all saving our body for longer period of time, instead of overusing it like in my case as pro player in 37 I so many broken parts in my body than 20 WOW players. Think about it. Old ways and new. Now kinds always on the phone, next 10 years i could not imagine what going to happen.

      +Jibriltz Just because you play a multiplayer game, doesn't mean your addicted. Some of us are able to play it as a hobby rather than our second life. I can't play WoW for more than maybe 3 hours without getting a headache. I'm like this with every video game, really.
      Oh, and I hope your brother is over the addiction by now, considering that your comment was posted 8 months ago.

    • @Jibriltz

      I see your point and everyone is different. Like with drugs, alcohol or anything - not all users become addicts. But for me, it's harder to understand because I get so little enjoyment from it. I played a bit of Counter Strike and Mass Effect 3 multiplayer and they just made me annoyed. But yeah, if you like it and you have a life outside of it - go nuts.
      And thanks for the concern and the question. Yes and no. He's gotten busy with his degree now so that's brought him into contact with real live people but any extended bit of time off and he's on that damned computer all day. I think it's more internet writing projects that he works on than games these days but still - it's cyber friends and no daylight or exercise.

    The girl from Norway part broke my heart. I had a girl I loved play the game with me (We didn't meet in-game, I brought her to the game), then after awhile she left me when we were about to start our lives together IRL. I was so heartbroken I made a copy of her character and now it's my main. I still miss her very, very much, and it's been years since this happened. :(

    I quit after 4 years (2 years ago), the only thing I liked back then was doing Arena, after so many season having to refarm all my pvp gear doing bg's before going to arena... I just couldn't take it anymore.
    Blizzard just explores so much their players with wow, in 4 years I had to pay around U$900 (just buying the game and subscrisption), and if I look back it's really not worth it, it's nice to experience raiding, pvp and some more. but after 1-2 years of experience everything else in wow has become a big filler, just an excuse to make you refarm everything.
    Just to think that I played so many years of dota 1 and 2 and didn't spent U$1.

    I too was addicted to WoW and also considered making a video like this. I stopped playing before Cata and did not buy that expansion. But we all know how much fun it is to brag about our gear and achievements in the game. Congrats on finding a new habit IRL that you love and can contribute to others. But be careful not to get sucked back in when a new expansion comes out (that's the true test, hehe). My fav part of the vid was the grey character 'frozen in time' as time lapse in color happened.

    I quit WoW because of the subscription fee. I was getting tired of having to pay for a game card. Its absolutely insane. Maybe once Blizzard manages to control their greed and abandon the subscription model then I will go back to WoW.
    Heck who knows, if they went B2P instead maybe WoW will have around 20 million subscribers that will increase every year.

      you dont understand how business works at all. its not about how much cash you HAVE. its about how much cash you can GAIN, they could have a TRILLION dollars, does not matter. they want to make as much money as possible while spending as least money as possible, thats how business works. thats what people in suits get payed for

    • @Grudgebearer47
      @Grudgebearer47 10 лет назад +1

      Xarion What I meant was that if GW2 can succeed with a b2p model by a lesser known company then Blizzard can easily sell more copies with a b2p model too. Even if the subscription model is dropped they can still implement a cash shop to sell cosmetics.

    I hate to see how people quit the game because they say that it's playing it, or not playing it at all. It's a game, it gets boring after too long, you can just play the game like a normal game, you dont have to live in it! I have had soooo many breaks from it but I always return, not because I'm an addict, but because I want to try the new content. Not because it's a lifestyle, gaming is a hobby, and gaming itself is just as okay as playing soccer or any other sport as long as you have time with friends.

      I'm no (and have never been) a drug addict, and I was never addicted to WoW (mostly because I think the game is overhyped because I tried it for a week and wasn't into it). However, any addiction has the same effect on someone: it makes you want to play it or use it. If you ask me, his addiction was worse than yours because he spent roughly 12 hours on end per day for 6 years on that stupid game. You sir, you hit yourself up with drugs probably a MAXIMUM of once or twice per day.
      Also, the same way he can't walk away from the game is the same way you couldn't "walk away from the needle". In reality, you could walk away from the needle with no problem, but your addiction forced you to stay with the drug for 5 years.
      So, just because his addiction is in a cyber world, it doesn't mean it isn't as dangerous as a physical item addiction.

    • @Smittz
      @Smittz 9 лет назад +1

      I wasn't using a needle, lol gross. I was smoking it, and no-- I was doing like 50 bags a day at one point, so all day, 24 hours a day. Please don't try and say it would be worse. You have no idea what you're talking about and I mean that in the most non-rude way.

I'm just disgusted that this is called an "addiction" this is just a person getting out of control and could EASILY be turned around and they could just not play the game. It's not like they would get withdrawals and shit. People who quit drugs/alcohol can die from withdrawal and it's just disgusting people think this "addiction" is funny and relative to actual addiciton

    Good for you man, even though I don't know you I feel proud of you for quitting for some weird reason. I really have no clue where this is coming from. I guess because I was a gamer once and i found it much harder to quit. Congrats man.

    Playing video games all day isn't all that bad. Certain days, in particular. I've made it a habit to finish what I need to do IRL then treat myself to alone time in gaming. And really, you spend more money in "social" life than you do anything else. And most of it are consumables.
    Have a decent social life. Not a big fan of parties, bar hopping or any of that sort. Just dont like being around a group of people I don't know after long days at work and being stuck in traffic. I've reached my quota of human interaction for the day so I'm good.
    I think this person just didn't know how to balance things out and who knows if he ended up being burnt out with this new "social life".

      It's better than using drugs all day at least.

    I used to be addicted to world of warcraft. But then, I became to busy to play it. After not playing it for a while, I forgot how much fun it was. So when I started playing again, I wasn't addicted anymore. Now, I play it from time to time. If your bf really wants to overcome his addiction, show him this comment or tell him to not play his game for a week and see how he feels about it, and hopefully he will forget how fun it is.
