But back to the convo: JJ literally came back to an island w/ no dad, no house, & no job. We literally saw him last episode beg for a job, we saw him in this episode eating food from a stranger’s fridge bc who knows how long it’s been since he ate anything. Like how can you not see this dude is mentally broken in a way & isn’t in the right headspace to be w/ the girl he’s basically known his whole childhood & is in love with. Have empathy pls 🙏🏾

Topper tried to drown John B, He pushed John B off of a tower, he took Sarah to the bonfire and defended her when she was starting trouble, and straight up took his girl and did it with her. He definitely deserved everything that John B did to him.

I've always loved Kiara. But this season she slayed. She was funny, she's so patient with JJ and she's been kidnapped twice and rocked both situations like a camp. and i loved her outfits.

rafe definitely doesn’t deserve redemption at ALL, but at first, i did think that topper deserved to be redempted this season when he was helping the pogues out, even tho he was only doing it for sarah. but then what he did at the end of the season was just unjustifiable and i lost all the respect i gained from topper in the beginning of the season. it’s actually kinda sad because in season 2 he wasn’t that bad of a dude as the other kooks were, he really just loved sarah and i kinda felt bad for him because of how she just used him

you guys are taking everything jj says at very surface level. he’s definitely being harsh on kie & it’s frustrating to see him pushing her away and avoiding talking his feelings but this season his character arc is about self-sabotaging bc he feels like he doesn’t deserve happiness to some extent (as said by the writer’s themselves). i could go on and on about it but you guys probably won’t read my comment anyways so just keep this in mind for the time while watching any jj&kie scenes. have some empathy for the guy, he’s been through so much but he’ll eventually come around.

Ok so how every member of the group has been acting didn’t make sense to me until this very episode. Each character wasn’t really acting like their usual self Pope almost shooting rafe when pope would never really go that far, Sarah kissing topper when she’s clearly in love with john b( and remember she could’ve cheated on john b in the second season during the bon fire with topper but she didn’t), and john be punching topper into the ground without topper fighting back and didn’t even stop after topper was unconscious.
So I did the math, season 1 to season 3 the timeline of the show doesn’t even add up to one year, season 1 is like a few weeks, same with season2, and then there’s the one month of them being on the island and its been a week or two for the rest a season 3. The writers have been building up the tension in the show, like it’s literally has been one thing after another and no breaks in between. Pope has been beaten up kidnap and has been repeated wrong of his family treasure. JJ has gone through major shit with his dad, almost went to jail, kicked out of his house, and nearly died on the boat. Sarah was shot, saw her dad die, her brother tried to drown her, was on the run, kid nap by her toxic family, her dad tried to kill her, and then officially became homeless. John b got bit by a aligator, frame for murder, nearly killed multiple times, found his dad, watched his dad kill someone, and then his dad was kidnapped .
The tension has been non stopped it’s been building up to the point of them finally slipping. It doesn’t excuse Sarah kissing topper no more than john b beating topper even after he was out cold. But it does explain how this all happened.

I agree with Nathan. The writing for this season was not that good. This whole season felt rushed. I started this season like a month ago and still haven’t had the energy to finish it.

It’s kind of odd that some of you guys had so much empathy for rafe in the beginning of this season but can’t seem to have empathy for JJ or even try to understand why he’s behaving this way towards kie knowing everything he has gone through so i’m just gonna write some obervations to hopefully clear things up regarding JJ’s character this season, both from my interpretation and also from things both the writers and Rudy (the actor who plays JJ) have said about him. This season JJ’s character arc is mostly about him self-sabotaging and thinking that he doesn’t deserve happiness to some extent.
JJ’s actor explained it well on a recap video about JJ lashing out in episode 4: on the island JJ felt like all of the Pogues were equal but once he gets to outer banks reality hits when all the others go to a safe home with parents, he comes home to an eviction notice and no parents and he realizes they’re not equal at all. All of that pent up frustration just leads him to lash out at kie when she comes to visit him bc on top of him being afraid of getting close on a deeper level with kie, he also realizes how different both of them are and he doesn’t feel worthy of being with her in a sense, since she comes from a good wealthy family and he has no family and basically nowhere to live (hence him calling her a kook);
In episode 5 when JJ was at kie’s place, kie’s dad was all up on his face and said kie was better off without him and the Pogues which obviously just made it worse for him and basically “confirmed” his thoughts about him and kie never working out. Not to mention her dad started comparing JJ to his dad and what did JJ did? He self-sabotaged again, he stole the money clip from her dad and once kie found out she was obviously upset and they didn’t spoke after that, since JJ kept ignoring her, again self-sabotaging and pushing her away. Then JJ shows up at her parents restaurant anniversary telling her they have to go south america but like kie said, he has been ignoring her ever since ep5 and all of this was too sudden for her. Kie obviously wants to talk things out with jj but he keeps on self-sabotaging and pushing kie away and while I feel bad for Kie and I agree that JJ was selfish for what he said, i also understand why he’s behaving this way, from a psychological standpoint.
You guys can complain about the writers when it comes to other aspects of the show but when it comes to JJ in my opinion there’s nothing wrong with the route they took with him this season, it makes perfect sense for a guy like him who has gone through so much trauma, has been abused by his father, is basically homeless, technically has no parents and now his relationship with kie is shifting from friendship towards something romantic and it scares him. You have to dig a little bit deeper into why he’s behaving this way.
Sorry for the long essay, but hopefully it will help someone understand his character arc a bit better. I highly recommend everyone to watch the actors and the writers recapping each episode of s3, it helps clear some things up for those confused about certain character's actions.

just wanna say. jj is well aware that he's being "selfish" and "unfair" towards kie. he's doing it on purpose. self sabotage. yeah that mf luke left a big mark on him. am sure kiara didnt except this to be that hard because on the outside he's always so confident and smiling.
I do think that John B hitting Topper was excessive. Like the first punch is okay, it's understandable because Topper was kind of provoking him with his comment but after he was on the floor he should not have kept hitting him, and just because Topper did that in the first season does not make it okay. Topper is still annoying though. JJ just doesn't know how to process his feeling, he's pushing Kiara away because he doesn't let people get close or let people in. Kiara understands that to some degree which is why she keeps insisting and trying to talk to him. Another person would have given up already, but JJ is definitely worth the trouble and more! ❤
i like to think that kie is fighting for more than just him accepting there's something between them, she's showing him he is worth it and loved in general.

Topper is a horrible person for doing that to John B in the first season but John B also got with Sarah in the first season when she was with Topper, so he can’t be too mad at Topper for that.
I completely agree though that John B was going to walk away until Topper opened his mouth, so he had it coming.

I think Rafe not only needs to be in jail for killing Peterkin but, he needs drug action help and mental help. It’s very obvious to me that Rafe is most likely bipolar because of how frequently his mood changes, how angry he gets, and how quickly he snaps, and the drugs aren’t helping him. So while he does need help, he also needs to be in jail to what he did.

its frustrating to see you all say "what are the writers doing" for everthing that you dont like in the show. like yes i agree there is some problems wth it this season but not everything "bad" that happens means the writers did a bad job. its just a bad thing happening like we'r not going to get only happy things you know
i agree. don't get me wrong, there a lot of writing problems with the show but not necessarily the things they're fixated on in my opinion. the things they're criticizing are not even bad writing, they're just choices the writers made that some people might not agree. bad writing however is the amount of convenience the writers have been using since s1.

The drama of that isn't the bad part. It's the way they wrote it. It didn't fit. Way too unrealistic. There were directions they could have gone, that went with their characters more. It was forced.

It’s almost sad in a way bc me as a female would automatically feel empathy & understanding towards another female who doesn’t feel good enough, but as a man I wish I understood why your first instinct is to call JJ selfish. i think it has to do w the fact that as women, we grew up in a society that makes women seem like very vulnerable people, who react on emotions, who are very emotional, who cry very easily so obviously since we have always been associated w our feelings and emotions it’s super easy for us to express those feelings good or bad and to talk about them so we obviously have the capacity of feeling empathy for others very easily bc we are used to be in touch w our feelings without being embarrassed by it. Whereas men, they grew up in a society where men are supposed to be strong and tough all the time, that emotions and feelings are a women thing and it’s for the weaks so they have been taught to oppress these feelings and emotions so obviously when they are in a situation where they need to be in touch w their feeling, they don’t know how to bc they never got to express them or to talk about them. So feeling empathy and understanding how people can feel is not in their capacity or at least not like women can. So to get to my point this is why even before watching their reaction, i knew they weren’t going to understand what jj is feeling and why he’s processing his feelings this way bc they are men. Only a few have this capacity to be in touch w their feelings and unfortunately they are very hard to find

yeah after the last episode, the rest of what was left of my respect for sarah completely disappeared .
i’m sure y’all already know now because of half of the comments on this video, but y’all need to focus more on why jj says the things he says to kie. it’s not because he’s selfish, even though he acts like it. he probably hates doing it to her but he’s trying to push her away because he doesn’t feel like he’s worth it for her.
