Nice to see John here. "Phatty Exploration" sounds like something you get done at the doctor's office. ;) The Sub Phatty is a great synth, but after owning both, I definitely prefer the Sub 37. I did keep the Sub Phatty, though, because gluttony. :)
Im getting mine in two months.Such a great inspirational synth and for 739€ you have a real Moog synth with that fat beasty Moog filter.Beautiful, beautiful synth, just look at it,amazing piece of kit, will sit great on my desktop next to my BigSky and Timeline.
Hi Rick, it alternates back and forth. The intro is very effected but after that I think pretty much every time I switch to a new sound it starts out 100% dry and then at some point I usually blend in a little to a lot of the effects. This is always, or at least most of the time, indicated with the on screen text. You can also see my hand turning up the wet/dry mix knob on the Strymon BigSky pedal. When in doubt take a look at the position of the wet/dry mix knob, when it is fully counter clockwise (about the 7 o'clock position) the sound you are hearing is 100% dry Sub Phatty and any other position in a clockwise direction you are hearing some of the effects mixes in with effects at 100% when the knob is at it's max (about the 5 o'clock position. I realize that the knob position may be hard to see on a small screen and looking at this video today I wish I would have done a better job of the lighting . . . . Anyways, I hope this helps and thanks for watching and commenting. Maybe the fact it was sometimes hard to tell if the effects were present or not is a testament to how good the Moog Sub Phatty sounds all by itself? ;-)
hearing this i realized that i need a big sky in my life so bad. the phatty is ok but that strymon daaaaaaamnnnnnnnn he is doing all the heavy lifting in here
Amazing! Best Moog sub phatty demo. I though it was not possible to use a sequencer in this synth, but you did? Ca I do the same with a Korg sq-1? I almost bought one of these, but the seller told me that I couldn't use a sequencer with.Thank you! I
Thanks for the kind words! :-) The Sub Phatty has both 5 pin DIN MIDI in and CV/Gate inputs so I would think most modern sequencers would work? I've never tried a Korg sq-1 but I'd assume it would work? I also haven't tried using the USB connection for anything so I don't know if a sequencer connected that way would work.
+The One Man Boy Band Thanks! :-) And, while the video portion of the beginning is indeed reversed, the audio isn't, sort of! You are hearing it in normal forward direction but heavily processed with the Strymon BigSky reverb pedal in one of the Nonlinear settings that can create the reverse effect in real time! You can learn more about the amazing BigSky here: www.strymon.net/bigsky/
Actually just monophonic! It may sound like more at times due to my use of delay effects and/or playing technique where I hold down a lower root note and then play something above. Since it has high-note-priority it will always play the highest note being held down so anytime I release the higher keys the pitch snaps back down to that low one. I maybe do that too often but I like it! :-)
John L Rice No it's a good effect, my ARP 2600 the lowest note or voltage has priority unless I hook it up for duophonic or the interval latcher. With the newer Moogs I just wasn't sure what they can do now. Have a good one John!
Why does this sound punchier, more mini Moog like, less fizzy, than the sub 37 or subsequent 37 to me? I really was planning on getting the subsequent 37 but I have yet to hear it sounding as clear and punchy as this demo of the sub phatty. I thought they had the same sound engine but I have yet to hear the clarity on a demo of the 37 as I hear here on the sub. The sub phatty seems to do overdriven and bell like clarity. Maybe I just haven’t heard the right 37 demo?
John L Rice how do you have the big sky hooked up? I actually just bought a subphatty, first synth, and have many guitar pedals and moogerfoogers. Would like to play around with adding the strymon in. Just standard quarter inch cable? Just want to make sure wouldn't damage the strymon big sky with all the funky synth sounds. Rock on man!
@@justinprince8761 Hey Justin, so sorry I missed your question until now! 🤦♂I trust you found your answer long ago? 😊 For anyone else wondering, in general with synths into guitar pedals, just start with the synth's master output at a fairly low level and then increase as necessary to get the best result. Listen closely for distortion and reduce the synth's master volume a little if needed. With well designed products like the ones from Moog and Strymon etc. there is little to no chance of ever doing any damage when correctly using them. (or even somewhat incorrectly using them? 😅)
***** Thanks! :-) The Sub Phatty is only monophonic though! It might sound like it has more than one voice though sometimes due to a combination of reverb, delay, LFO modulation and/or playing technique.
It was just something that I made up on the spot, inspired by the sound. It does sound familiar to me as well though, probably has been in more than one composition? I suppose I could make a single out of it and start selling it and who ever legally owns it will likely get a hold of me? ;-)
Well, turn your volume down a bit then? The internet is full of a wide range of sound levels, from way too soft to way to loud, and it seems reasonable that people will need to adjust the volume of their playback systems accordingly?
I think the Strymon reverb is the star here! Good golly thats a great sounding box! 😳🎹
That was one of the best Moog demo's I've heard. Love the reverb / delay!
that big sky is a nice addition

3:11 - 4:10 eargasm.
that seriously gave me goosebumps
Cannot wait to pick one of these up tomorrow
JLR does some sophisticated stuff here. would love to see him demoing more of this "normal" synth stuff.
+deadmoldable Thanks! :-) Do you mean you'd want to see something different than I already have on my own RUclips channel? If so, like what?
Cool demo !
I love Moog sound !
The noisy stuff was divine.
That was a wonderful combination to listen to!
:-)
yes, thats a great demo if a great synth!!!
haha. funny middle part with the big sky :-)
tbh the big sky is the MVP here
Great Demo John! Duo phonic
Damn making me wish I had the blue sky! Wonder if I can get some similar results with the Eventide H9.
bravissimo John..!!!!
Thank you! :-)
I wanted this synth a lot at one point and when I was in a position to buy, The sub 37 was out and I spent a bit more :)
and you have no money left for that wonderfull reverb which is half of the price of sub phatty:D
sounds amazing!
Perfect, thank you for sharing.
Cool but I really want to hear what the sub phatty sounds like by itself (without the external effects).
Well, almost half of this video IS the Sub Phatty 100% dry with no effects? ;-)
But which half?

Hello, is it possible to use a DAW to give it some effects like reverb and delay with VST's?
Yes, definitely! :-)

the intro started out so weird. haha, moog backwards, this machine is already so mind blowing you almost don't think about reversing it.

Richard Wright Wet Dream ! :O
Is that like a shimmer effect out of the big sky?
Yes, at about 3:40 I bring in the BigSky Shimmer preset until about 4:25. :-)

Hey, unbox that shit on your own time Jack :D
lol ;-)
Not sure if playing the presets is showing the potential of the synth.
Well, I did say this was an exploration, not the most amazing things that could possibly be done with it? ;-)
Damn its monophonic?
Well, it is a Moog.
y
Yup, only a mono synth! A great mono synth actually! :-)
Too loud!
🙉😅🤷♂
