Watch this movie again recently for the first time since it premiered, and I really liked it, it's really solid! I feel bad some people around apparently seemed to not have good memories of it.. The Last Wish is a good sequel for it, not 2 alone. :(
This first film is actually not only incredibly mediocre compared to The Last Wish, but just mediocre in general in my opinion. I’m glad they chose a different creative team to make the sequel years later
The one you are thinking of is not a "villian". If you think so, it means you misunderstood the character. But the real villian in this movie is also very well written.
When Humpty becomes a golden egg I think that's their way of saying he really did have a golden heart hence Puss saying, "I knew you were good inside."
I grew up with Puss in Boots. I've re-watch this movie way more than any other movie that I can remember. So when Puss 2 was announced I was jumping out into space, but I was still a little skeptical about what direction Dream Works would go with Puss. But after watching Puss in Boots The Last Wish, I can happily say that it left me ready willing and able to see what comes next in the Shrek universe.
I swear, the DVD menu alone for this movie had me giggling like crazy. And pairing Salma Hayek with Antonio Banderas... well, I've been watching Desperado since I was 5 or 6.
Even though this isn’t one of my favorite movies, the reconciliation of Puss and Humpty’s friendship as well as Humpty’s redemption arc are deeply personal for me. My childhood best friend was also deeply troubled, but one of the most beautiful people you could ever know. When she passed away, everyone got to see how “golden” she really was because she was an organ donor. 5 people, including a child, are able to thrive in life because of her final act of kindness.
I dont really understand why this movie isnt loved more. Yea it's not Dreamwork's most "mind blowing", but it's still really fun and enjoyable! I love that Puss has gotten his own movies now. The Last Wish will always be the best, but I never had problems with his first movie either. It's a classic

I don't know if this was on purpose, but Kitty Softpaws has some similarly to the cat in Gagliuso. Which is one of two Italian version of Puss in Boots, written/published in 1634 by Giambattista Basile. In this version the cat is female. And is betrayed by her master whom she has managed to win so much for. You can find the story in a book called The King of the Cats and other Fairytales by John Richard Stephen's. Which was released in 1993 Gagliuso starts on page 13. Kitty makes me think of this version everytime I see her.

I saw this at a drive in theater with a friend the week it came out. We were glad that we decided to go that route, because Humpty's "I was there the whole time" had us HOWLING in the car. Him appearing under the lady's skirt had me gasping for air and in tears.

I FORGOT TO ADD, My first experience with real life Antonio Banderas was the little known "Take The Lead". It was my first experience watching him dance, its a movie inspired by a true story. I really like it and recommend it.
I love this movie and think it did really well as a spin off. Yeah we miss out on say the musical craziness, but considering they had a lot of spanish like instrumental music it fits Puss in Boots more where as the Smash Mouth like music fits Shrek more. I thought we had a sequel that came out between the newest movie and this one, but no it was just a short film that was Puss in Boots: The three Diablos. Nothing special just had me wondering something was off. I like to think this felt more prequel ish to Shrek 2. Like this was when Puss was still an outlaw looking for gold in a way. And when he met Shrek things changed for him, he found a home in a way. Not sure if it is canon or not but I think it fits. I need to watch the new sequel so I am ready for you guys reaction!
Such small towns. I grew up in a "smallish" town on California that is nothing to talk about, but it had 45k and today it is slightly over 50k. Just homes and schools.
If I remember correctly, in the original story of Jack and the magic beans, the giant runs after Jack and while he's climbing down the beanstalk, Jack gets an axe and quickly chops it down. The giant falls along the beanstalk, and since he was still fairly high up, the fall kills him. That's how he dies! They do not mention the giant's wife in this movie though.
Well, Batman was inspired by Zorro so maybe Softpaws was a nod to it? And obviously Banderas played Zorro and Puss in Boots is heavily inspired by his interpretation of the character. Also, doesn't gold devalue the more of it there is? So maybe the town isn't all that loaded.

Technically this is Puss's origin story so it's a prequel to when we see him for the first time in Shrek 2.
Not neccessarely. In Shreck 2, Puss is an assassin, essentially an outlaw. His quest to clear his name started in earnest after he met Shreck.
