Time For Chaos is a playthrough of Masks of Nyarlathotep for the 7E Call of Cthulhu role-playing game system by Chaosium.
A mysterious lost expedition sets in motion an epic globe spanning adventure as investigators come face to face with ancient evils beyond the scope of human comprehension. Often considered the greatest role-playing game campaign ever written, Masks of Nyarlathotep stretches the boundaries of horror, driving both characters and players insane since its publication in 1984.

Troy, thank you so much for leaving your near death experience in the episode!😂
I came here after the Intimate Encounters one shot with Seth Skorkovsky. Very curious where this campaign is heading.
First episode, Troy just tells how he almost broke his ancle while just looking out of the window. Second episode he almost suffocates of inhaling air. Oh, man, Nyarlathotep is indeed doing its best to stop these guys. I am looking forward to the next episodes.
didn't know GMs had to roll for CON and Troy must've had like snake eyes (and ANOTHER 1) times 5 for his constitution
but oh man, when Troy stopped coughing his lung out and reverts to in character girl at the museum, coming out with the line "What the fuck were we talking about again?" I almost died laughing
Troy making jokes even in a near-death experience. A true professional comic!
That's commitment right there!
Rob's haunting sexual encounter just had me crying. 🤣🤣🤣
Wish I could mash that thumbs up icon like 10 times. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Broke the ice with a sledge hammer. Lol
"She's in the basement fetching an artifact"
Oh, she dead alright
For English speakers, Lake Titicaca is funny because Titi; for Spanish speakers, is funny because Caca. It has something for many people, really.
Caca is funny for english speakers as well, we've stolen enough words from other languages that we laugh heartily at "caca" as a word meaning "poop." Heehee, duty x3
"Fisticuffsmanship!" My new favourite word!
Noura "...hacking away, doing our thing..." LOL That's some classic CoC right there!
Such an amazing cast! Everyone playing their parts but I have a favorite with Ross. I love his portrayl of an emotionally shatteres aristocratic former British officer. I can certainly believe Vaughn saw the inside of Craiglockhart.
I guess they'll have to investigate Troy's death in the next campaign.
Hyped to see where this goes! Also, damn, that cough was pretty scary!
You are all AMAZING in this one, but i gotta say Ross especially killed it when i heard his voice. 😁🤩
Noura just killing it from the start with that perfect cosplay background!
I know that the constant “table talk” in character isn’t everyone’s speed, but I love it. Big reason I liked Penny Arcade’s The ‘C’ Team too. Ross’s mention of the pedants in chat made me lol.
Ended up buying the ingredients and making a pisco sour just because of this session.
10/10 drink
Troy starts mentioning a death cult and immediately starts to die on the air just like some old wives' tales say that if you mention certain names or cults they come get you. Really fun episode as I expected. Made it through 1 whole episode without any of the characters dying. Fully expect that to change soon as that's how CoC works. I mean the story even gives you easy access to stragglers with that article in the newspaper so they know it is going to be a high body count.
Aww, I was hoping to see a 1:1 scale playthrough of the sea journey, 8 hours of role-playing wandering a ship for the next twenty days.
Loved this show, pity it ended after 2 episodes #RIPTroy
F
I've listened to a few other Call of Cthulhu podcasts and they did not keep me engaged. It must be a combo of how Troy presents the game and the players working together as I am thoroughly enjoying the game so far and I'm someone who prefers a *lot* of combat in their TTRPGs. Definitely hooked and looking to see how this turns out!
Thanks for watching!
I REALLY enjoyed into The darkness crews playthrough of this, they used the classic rules
So glad the breathing event was not edited out! Troy is way too talented at improvisation to even edit out errors or misfortunes. Great episode!
Thanks! Great avatar too!
@@TheGlassCannon thanks!
Lol that first museum encounter was the most meta game play ive seen in a while. 😂
Not 8 minutes in and this has been the most entertaining thing I've seen on RUclips in a long time.
When @Rob says 'I bet that one's fake' at 2:03, lol. He's such a funny guy!
Hope you feel better Troy 😂
I love this series.
Mr Lavallee I have to commend your devotion to duty. Going through that choking episode as if all was well. Well done Sir, well done.
Seriously though this is a great show. All the players are top notch and the scenario is legendary.
Thanks!
Great cast! Rob is the rookie of the year imo
I usually listen to these at work and sometimes I come home and watch the videos. I like to watch my favorite moments whether they be the amazing acting or the hilarious jokes. This did not disappoint. Troy is a fucking pro for that recovery. Didn't make it awkward at all and everyone's reactions were pure gold.
This episode has passed my Chaosium test:
If i have a nightmare about an actual play I'm seeing, it's good.
Thank you for all your hard work!
Mission accomplished!
Awesome first episode! Feel better Troy! Whole cast was really firing as a new group and it's only gonna improve as they get more familiar with each other as players and their characters. Super excited for the next episode! I feel like Rob is going to quickly be a fan favorite on this show. Dude came with his A game and his sense of humor is my jam.
Wow I didn't know this adventure was from masks. I saw this adventure on Becca Scott's channel, and it was so good. I'm super excited to see how this group fairs 😁
Wow, it's fun going back to the beginning and seeing how the presentation of the characters evolved over time.
Been waiting all week!
Every time a new NPC shows up my brain immediately goes "I bet that's Nyarlathotep in disguise!"
If they ever stop breaking the fourth wall I will riot
Heavy cologne? "Zombie." (instant first thought)
Loose clothing. "Yep, zombie confirmed."
Not very talkative. "I already told you. I get it, he's a zombie."
Gaunt features. "Uh huh." (looking at watch) "So are we fighting the undead, or is this guy just here for the spooky vibe?"
I think this is one of those series I’m gonna have to put off for a few months and then binge. It’s difficult enough waiting for some of the other shows weekly on the network.
Great show and I can't wait for the creepy stuff to start happening.
Very Lovecraftian ending. I do hope Troy is okay. Random fact my grandfather on my moms side was named Troy. He was a really cool guy. Mined and cut his own gems. Made my mothers wedding ring and my fathers band. He did incredible work. It was fun growing up around his work shop.
I got a big kick out of when Ross toasted to “loosened tongues”, since I’m reading the adventure. Be careful what you wish for!
Coming back to get caught up for Season 2 and I feel a great trick was missed in not calling this episode "Loose Shrimp and Lust Vampires"
Loving the episode. I ran the Peru chapter a few months back and it was so much fun. No deaths but some horror and sanity loss
I love the character portraits
This is my new favourite AP, incredible cast, so so funny, I'm here for the long haul
Aww Troy! Whadda trooper! Great show, great ending.
Damn, I hope Troy is okay. Much love.
Loving every bit of this! Y'all keep it going!
34:33 This isn't quite how it works, it works based on language families. So if you know Spanish, you know a little bit of all Romance languages. If you know English, you know a little bit of all English languages.
Bit late to the Time for Chaos party, but better late than never! Ice breaker had me in stitches, wonderful! The characters are all amazeballs. Looking forward to experiencing this epic campaign through you as I'll never get to play it, so thank you for that.
What a cliffhanger! I can’t wait for next week!
This is incredible. Stacked cast. Great adventure. Wonderful from top to bottom!
Man, Ross' character is WIRED. 😂
RIP Troy
Long Covid, the Inscrutable! Master of Carcoughsa!
10:23 anything that references American Psycho is going to be an awesome series. subbed
Ooh. I am so glad to hear Noura's 30s accent again!
Almost watched Troy die there 😱
I hope Troy doesn't have the consumption. Was that the 20s?
Troy wasting his lungs on live stream AND on YT...I'm following this series btw...
10 minutes in and I'm already crying from laughter. Gosh I love you, guys.
I have always wanted to go to that lake and get a pick of me in it, just so I can prove I was knee deep in lake Titicaca.
People always talk about how characters always die while playing CoC but no one talks about how GMs can choke to death while rollplaying
Kate is dying too and tries to hide it xD
Rob is so meta, that he breaks my immersion totally.
I’m so happy to be enjoying this!
You guys were role-playing so well, I had no idea he was dying LOL. that's so bad and good at the same time. Hope your OK. (1:55.0 time)
Thanks!
1:56:00 Troy almost died!
You can hear him gulp the saliva down the wrong pipe
Ross is so good at this it's ridiculous with all the slang and the accent. He's got this down. Everyone's doing amazing I mean this cast is really really really good! I'm loving it! Sitting out Ohio and Toronto but meeting up with Phish tour in Atlantic City for a 3 night run on the beach. 3 days of Phish and hardcore debauchery! Then we have 2 days in Wisconsin then 3 days in Colorado to close the tour. Can't wait to be able to really dig into these when I get back. Next I convince the crew to do GCP Tour Or find a new crew who wants to do GCP tour and split gas and lodging. 😁
I felt so bad for laughing!
Holy shit Troy!
As to the passport thing... I dont think they can deny it if you ask for it. But they dont offer it up generally. I'm willing to bet that some of these ports have some weird immigration thing about Cruise Ship Employees where they EXPECT you to leave when the Ship does!
It feels like the patreon of the endeavor was undead to begin with. :As I sip my giggle juice:
I know it's early, but I hope it strikes a better balance between comedy and horror as the group delves deeper. Rob's nervous Starlord energy starts to wear a bit thin, but his enthusiasm is great. Ross has a good handle on how to throw in fun character notes without the whole thing sliding into "Abbott and Costello Meet Nyarlathotep."
I feel dumb but: did they explain why the four characters were contacted in the first place by Larkin to come to Lima?
So good. Been waiting for this to drop! Talk Seth into doing a cameo as Jack the NPC! haha
I hope these characters don't go insane too quick, they are melding well lol
I guess some elder god is not pleased with Troy
No spoilers but season 2 ep 13 made me want to start all over again to see the beginnings of the mystery squad!!
This cast is phenomenal. Enjoying Ross’ intense upper class twit. 😂 1:30:50 But there’s more under the surface there. You can hear his WW1 trauma coming through.
Thank you, Troy! I thought I was the only person that occasionally choked on random breaths of air. Now I Know that I am not alone! :)
Very lovely "first" episode
You're all lovely, and Noura was just gorgeous in her clothing and make-up design. What a great way to come on to a 20s rpg session. Love ya all.
lol as a data engineer I’m one of the 7 or 8 that like software engineering talk.
No one thought to call his wife as he was choking...
Bummer not having Syd or an original cast member, but I am LOVING this cast. I'm still on the cruise ship talk, and I already know this is gonna be a Wednesday work tradition watching this one.
At this point I almost feel like Ross or Kate can be considered OG members. I mean, she's the queen of NGWD!
love this show
Rob is an excellent addition.
@1:20:00 -ish And here is where the group must decide to continue or scuttle the game entirely... 😅
Kate, redefining requirements, same here!
Meet in a Tavern
I coughed so bad 2 months ago i herniated my naval. No reason. I know troys pain
We need more rob!
i've been waiting for a new TfC since the first came out! I cannot wait for session 3 now lol
Credit cards most definitely didn't exist in 1920s ftr. Wouldn't exist until three decades later
Charge cards did, though
"You hear a gasping for air in the offices of a museum."
"We immediately stop moving, and approach ever so slowly!"
Meanwhile, the person in distress dies from her unchewed hot dog. Other than this being Call of Cthulhu, what reason would your characters have to be this cautious? It's like "Welcome to Call of Cthulhu. You have all been invited to a bar. What do you do?" "I sneak ever so slowly to the entrance. Let me roll a Spot Hidden! Do I see anything?"
I mean the term "Death Cult" was thrown around an awful lot the night before.... so they definitely had reasons...
They had one guy they just met talk about a potential Death Cult way in the mountains of Peru. They had no reason to believe they were in immediate danger, except, of course, that they are playing CoC.
It just seems a little over cautious.
@@Joemantler They learned that the literal man that brought them there may be involved... seems pretty warranted to me.
@@Tibbyvc-rb7od Again, they heard one guy say some tenuous theories with zero evidence. They have reasons to be suspicious, sure! But will any of them say "no thanks" and take the next boat home? I can see Fairuza (?) staying, because of the mystery about her mother.
But I promise you, if I am walking about here in beautiful (if humid) Auburn, Alabama, and happen to in a building on the campus of Auburn University, and I should hear a gasp for breath from a room, my mind doesnt jump to "the killer may still be around!" unless someone has died mysteriously already.
Try it some time! Choose a place of Higher (or even Intermediate) Learning near you, walk around, listen closely, and see if you fear the shadows at any time. I'll bet you a dollar you dont.
waiting for ep.3 to drop
I enjoy peanutbutter chocolate Ice cream
Anyone know the intro music?
Spanish isn't really like any other languages apart from Portuguese & in some senses Italian, but less than you'd expect (and the high speed in which most speak makes it very hard to understand), & French only gets you by there and in Belgium and Switzerland. German, however, can give you a basic understanding of many Scandinavian languages. English is a bit of a mishmash of everything but doesn't manage to be linguistically helpful in any way beyond being somewhat ubiquitous.
I had to pause the video & make some coughy of my own during that. Hope there are no lasting effects from the episode episode.
I'd say the grammars of french and spanish are pretty similar. But the vocabulary is different enough that knowing one language only won't help much with the other, and of course both are usually spoken quite fast.
You're missing a lot of french speaking places there.
@@lasselippert3892 Yea but they all speak actual French (and Canadian French which is close enough). It can't really be used to decypher other languages.
Ross
Nothing like dissecting to the 80s. Lol
