Time For Chaos is a playthrough of Masks of Nyarlathotep for the 7E Call of Cthulhu role-playing game system by Chaosium.
A mysterious lost expedition sets in motion an epic globe spanning adventure as investigators come face to face with ancient evils beyond the scope of human comprehension. Often considered the greatest role-playing game campaign ever written, Masks of Nyarlathotep stretches the boundaries of horror, driving both characters and players insane since its publication in 1984.

I live for Ross Bryant's characters going insane
They all looked traumatised at the end and Troy was so happy...lol
Troy's lack of horror film knowledge is such a humble brag. I don't know how you get so good at tone and pace without that frame of reference.
Man, this series is awesome. You might want to remind the players about Pushed rolls since they're burning through their luck pretty fast. I think the most important lesson about them, besides the tangible consequences, is that a failed push roll isn't necessarily failure to complete the task (At the keepers discretion of course.)
also don't forget you can't push combat rolls or opposed rolls!
This whole group, all the players and the Keeper are phenomenal. And these characters are great.
1:44:00 Poor Larkin his torment in the thrall of the monster must have been so enormous for his final words to be to thank his companions for murdering him to end that suffering. The thought of that really made me squirm for a good few minutes. At least Larkin was freed in the end
1:04:18 I was so disappointed that no one kissed their ass goodbye.
My top five: Alien, The Thing, Let the Right One In, The Witch, Pan's Labyrinth.
Great list… I also like The Others and the original The Omen still creeps me out. The Prophecy is decent as well.
I love how Kate classified The Neverending Story as horror…
Great choices. Prince of Darkness and the first Hellraiser are pretty great too.
If "Barf Into The Cracks" isn't your favorite Dave Matthews Band song, then you're wrong.
My face when I realized they were going to confront Larkin, ensuring his *other side* was about to come out 😈😈😈
So good!
The Reveal with Larkin at the end, pure gold! Just exactly how I imagined it when I read that part!
Troy, those are fighting words. The Decent and The Ritual were enjoyable Lovecraftian esq horror movies. John Carpenter’s The Thing and the Mouth of Madness are fantastic Lovecraftian horror!
It's not like Vaughn would have hit Fairuz with his Stormtrooper aim.
If that thing on the Tear was what I think it was (a Dimensional Shambler!), that was a really close one!
That thing is a formidable foe!
It would have probably been a TPK!
Awesome session, guys!👏👏👏
Good eye Wagner! It was!
Shoulda been a Sanity check for seeing it, too. 😵💫
ah the insect eyes fooled me, thinking it was a Mi-Go,
@@curtisrozzelle4125 I think that was the Check, cause you dont need one for Larkin, unless Troy judged it that way.
Just a normal day adventuring around with that kind of ending, lol.
All the Keepers who know the material when Troy said, "Gimme a POW roll. You know, I'll do one too." 😏
yeah, as Possessed Larkin needed one, so evily good. ;)
Such a good Ep, such a good game system, such a great crew!
No asses were shot in the making of this episode.
Everybody’s faces at the end! So good.
One of the most engaging episodes made on this entire network, bravo all
The look on their faces at the end - they were catching flies with their mouths open.
Troy you have to watch the Thing from 1982! Very in the Call of Cthulu vein.
When Noura said "Hack off his limbs!" with that fervor, I wanted to get out Pom Poms and cheer for a while, because she brought the good old "Braindead" Zombie Movie Horror vibe to this show :D
AAARRRRGGGHHHH... a .22 revolver can hold 6-10 rounds depending on the size, and a semi-automatic holds at least 6. Stop letting Troy chop you at the knees with this 3 round nonsense! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Amen to this. 3 rounds is how many shots may be fired in a combat round. Per RAW, the .22 short automatic magazine holds 6 rounds.
You gonna die by that?
2:06:24. Just look at their faces! Flies!
"Spendin' too much time around dem' BOOKS, honey"
I said it before and I’ll say it again. These characters should go home to their mamas and forget Peru exists.
I'm constantly thinking, "every character not already in Delta Green would just nope out at this point."
@@MD-zi9if Delta Green doesn't exist at this point.
The events of this session take place in 1921, 7 years before the establishment of DG.
Plus, everyone except Carter has a "valid" reason to stay: knowledge, inspiration, and adrenaline. The allure of the Mythos is really powerful.
Love the reality of Rob's reaction: "Or, we could just go home."
These are truly masterpieces! The GCP has this way of telling a story that's truly gripping. The improv part makes it so interesting. Again these need to be on TV! The world no the universe needs to see these. Everything from Giant slayer to Traveler.
Great episode and Troy nailed the suspense and horror parts. Players did well to fight smart dispite being outclassed and took a big win with no real damage. Loved it
So so sooooo good. I look forward to this every week
Thanks Lee!
They're totally forgetting the confessions of Gaspar Figueroa!
I just love this show. Troy is an amazing Keeper. My favourite part was (as I read the Peru campaing) seeing him to REALLY trying to avoid the confrontation as Larkin. It was one of the best roleplaying moment I've seen. And then when he decided that "ok boys, you asked for it" and when shit hit the fan, he causally mentions "Ohhoohh...God...I didn't think you push him,and here we are...". I can totally feel what he went through :D 1:20:35 LoL
Just found this series as I'm prepping to MoN after the holidays. I really appreciate that it's a brand new CoC group, like my group will be, and that Troy only has like ~15 hours running CoC, like I do. So this is a really helpful place to begin my prep and research!
I love how speechless everyone was at the end as the music starts playing. Normally there's SOME kind of talk but this time-just nothing
Amazing episode again! Could y’all add the character names so they’re visible? just seeing the players names and not the characters gets confusing sometimes.
I am absolutely loving this group so far, they're all phenomenal including the Keeper! This run is my first experience of TGCN so having a great time!!
"I told you, we had too much fun."
This makes me want to watch Big Trouble in Little China - it's more Pulp Cthulhu than The Thing, and another one you should all see if you haven't.
nice when the dm forgets a sanity check here and there
Is there supposed to be a sanity check over the floating head of the companion they just killed and mutilated, speaking dark prophecies and dissolving into flies?
This is a long campaign and it's best played with Pulp Cthulhu rules where you can reduce sanity loss. Otherwise, everyone will be permanently insane long before the end.
@@simonfernandes6809 well, they arent playing Pulp, so strap in hehe. Troy already told them this will happen, more characters to come
I’d never really thought about this until now, but Troy’s evil GM act seems to be confined to Pathfinder. In these other games, he seems to root for the players rather than trying to kill them. I’m guessing it’s probably because they’re so much more likely to die in CoC, coupled with the fact he’s more of a bastard when he’s playing with his close friends.
Probably a difference between childhood friends and network friends plays a big role
@@deathhall1 For sure.
I only watch pathfinder eps occasionally but I have never seen Evil Troy in the 30ish eps I snatched. If you want my 2 cents, the players in this party are playing well in the game and understand how it works, and do not constantly put themselves at death’s door as a joke. The pathfinder party on GCN suffers from enormous skill issue.
@@Tecmaster96 I don’t disagree that the GCP crew often puts themselves in bad situations, but I maintain that Troy’s “antagonistic” GM act is largely limited to the GCP, as opposed to almost any other game he GMs on the network. (Also, note that I admit it’s an act.)
Ross is amazing
Skid’s Franchise Fanguys podcast did a series on Nightmare on Elm Street. Worth a listen for Skid fans (and, honestly, who ISN’T a Skid fan?).
I can't wait to see the list they come up with for Troy. I had a feeling that the comments would add to that list too, but the man only has so much time to really digest it all. That said, I'm even more excited to see the next episode. That cliffhanger was pure dynamite. This series has surpassed all of my expectations so far and I'm pretty sure that it's only gonna continue to improve as the story keeps going. Oh, and for my old and new horror suggestions, I pitch The Shining and Doctor Sleep. Between the brilliance of Kubrick and the utter magic of Mike Flanagan, that's a one-two punch that's tough to beat.
Troy at 1:19 as he describes the tear opening and the transformation/sublimation of Larkin -- that is pure endorphins! Giving me flashbacks of running the master Cthulhu games up at Gencon :p
Most slasher movies are indeed dreck. But meta-horror ABOUT slasher movies can be brilliant (Scream, Cabin in the Woods), and there are a few slasher movies that have interesting back stories behind them (Scarecrows, The Blair Witch Project). If you like arthouse movies, then you should definitely watch Psycho, Midsommar, and either/both version(s) of the Let the Right One In. My favorite horror films, however, tend to be the ones that use horror to make political or social points. For race, the original Night of the Living Dead is a classic for a reason (and Dawn of the Dead's critique of commercialism is also amazing), and Get Out is a modern classic in the same way (Jordan Peele is a freaking genius). Gender is a really interesting element of Midsommar, Ginger Snaps, and The Descent. And there's an obvious gay/trans metaphor going on in Let the Right One In. (Class warfare is a major element of a lot of horror films, but right now I can only think of The People Under the Stairs, which is fine but not top twenty). Bear in mind that horror overlaps with a lot of genres: movies like Jurassic Park (I know), No Country for Old Men, or Alien and Aliens are essentially horror films. So you might like horror already and not know it!
I'm also very fond of monster movies, but most of them aren't so much scary as they are fun to watch. Still: if you haven't seen the original King Kong or Tremors, do yourself a favor. And finally, not enough people have seen 1957's Curse of the Demon, and it's a damn shame.
Original Candyman will always be my favorite slasher movie
Read "Casting the Runes" by MR James, THEN watch Curse of the Demon, which was a pretty good adaptation...
I'm loving this campaign so far. Thanks guys!
Woaw?! Troy hasn't seen the Thing?!?! You're in for a treat, m'Dude!
woops I think I might have a new hyper fixation, I watched everything of this series so far in one day😅
“Can anybody help?” … “I have some heroin!”
Troy shouldn't be allowed to play CoC anymore until he's up to date on his horror cinema 😂 Great episode, as always 👍
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Troy really said to Pinhead "U MAD?"
I'm just glad they've left lake Titicaca. Took me out a little every time Troy said the word. Yes, I'm five.
Oh also, the whole cast is doing great. Troy is awesome.
Tumbbad is a great low-budget Indian horror flick with a Lovecraftian type vibe (they namecheck Hastur too). Recommended.
When it comes to horror films, I find the Japanese & Korean ones to be generally vastly superior to the American. At some point it seems like US filmmakers got lazy and just started cramming in jump scares instead of building on the psychological tension. There are exceptions since the '70s, such as Event Horizon or Screamers (but even those are old), but how they managed to strip all the power out of the Rec remake is a prime example of the problem.
Wow, Larkin is one tough mother.
My group would have made magical golden weapons by now - they can't resist heating/beating plowshares into swords lol 😅
You guys really need to do a Kult Divinity Lost scenario
absolutely! imagine them doing the black madonna
My top 30 horror movies would be
1. The Thing by John Carpenter
and then without specific order: Halloween, In The Mouth of Madness, Prince of Darkness, Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Kauffman and Siegle version), The Exorcist, Alien, Rosemary's Baby, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Evil Dead 2, Jaws, Psycho, Shining, Braindead, The Call of Cthulhu (2005), Ring (japanese version), Jacob's Ladder, El Dia de la Bestia, The Fly, Scream, The Blob, Reanimator, Hellraizer, It Follows, Get Out, Let The Right one in, Suspiria, Dellamorte Dellamore.
If you’re a fan of Gothic Horror, I can’t recommend enough Netflix’s Fall of the House of Usher. Very cool! Loving the show guys, keep it up!
So good!
Yes! Spaniard here! Noice spanish, Troy! :D
so an idea would have been to give the player with the oil a hint at making a Molotovin cocktail using a piece cloth in the lamp oil container
it a surprising fact, but molotov cocktails werent a thing before 1940. i would allow it, but with some harder roll.
Let's goooooooo!
Sweet
Witchboard messed me up as a kid. Saw poltergeist in the theater as a kid. It was rated pg. It kinda messed me up.
@1:30:40 Tell me you've been prepping Pathfinder 2e, without telling me you've been prepping Pathfinder 2e
DnD players never run from encounters.
If this ever becomes a Animated movie or series a perfect theme song would be "Burn The Witch by Shawn James.🔥🤩
Time For Chaos would make an excellent animated series.
@@TheGlassCannonso .... ell we get one!?!?!? 😅
Is the "quick word from our sponsor" a real thing in the stream, or is it just a running gag, showing the logo for a second to say they're sponsoring themselves?
They show sponsers on twitch I think. Their Pf game is sponsered by dice makers. Only Chaosium is sponsoring TFC
What the WHAT?!?
can't do horror movies/tv at all, but do enjoy a good mythos book/game
The horror list for me is any Cushing/Lee Hammer Horror movies, 1960s Vincent Price especially the Edgar Allen Poe movies, The Exorcist, Night of the Living Dead (original B&W), and The Omen. I don't love slasher movies outside of Nightmare on Elm Street series which are pretty good. Gore for the sake of gore is just boring to me. Kudos to Kate for signing up for CoC despite hating horror movies. She knew she was going to be grossed out and still did it.
I love what I’m seeing here, but facing an avatar or Nyarlathotep this early in their career could have provided such a satisfying TPK for the story and the players. Now this would have messed with the timeline of Jackson Elias dying in NYC, but there would have been some interesting plot points if the new PCs were all family members/friends finding out about the disastrous trip to Peru and uncovering what exactly happened.
Is it just me? Or should there have been a few more SAN checks towards the end there? Troy's going a little soft.
Kate is just too cute! But really everyone is very good looking.
IT was Willy Wonka compared to EraserHead
Eraserhead supposedly is the directors way of processing his fears that his pregnant wife was going to give birth to a lizard baby
I also do not like horror movies. But I love to GM it.
remember there is a difference between horror and splatter/ slasher films
We will keep that in mind.
I hate bickering....
Attacking and confrontng Larkin..... Lime its a safe thing to,do.
