Thank you so much! I did do a video on The Wild Unknown! It doesn't cover the entire deck, but I do talk about a lot of the cards. You can find it here: ruclips.net/video/RC4lE7EdcpE/видео.html
I love your thoughts on this and I love the quote you shared. I write poetry and the idea that there is this whole other half of the poem that is written by the reader is really beautiful. I agree about TWU. I actually put it away for the longest time because the popularity of it saturated the tarot landscape to the point that it felt basic and uninspiring. I’ve recently pulled it back out and “rediscovered’ it, so to speak, and I’m so happy I kept it. :)
I almost didn’t get it because I didn’t want a deck that was “basic” but I’m glad I trusted my instincts on it. Because I love it and now it’s not a common or popular deck at all. Lol
the wild unknown is my first (and only) tarot deck and i LOVE it! i got it when i was 14 (now 17) and i only really started using it at the beginning of quarantine last year. however from my first reading 3 years ago, it has not stopped BITCH SLAPPING me with truth and accuracy and i love it. i had it for maybe 2-3 days before i did my first reading and that was plenty for it to size me up and pinpoint what i need. i love what you said about the 5 of cups!!! i also love it. the cool thing is that the horse on 5 of cups and on the chariot could very well be the same horse, but with a different mindset!
I've heard so many people say, "this was my first deck and I learned on it just fine," and it's mostly seasoned readers (the ones who think RWS=TAROT) who say that it's not good for beginners, because they think RWS is the only way to learn. They don't realize that if you don't know RWS, it's JUST as easy to learn a non RWS system (often easier) as it is to learn rws... Rws devotees have trouble with this deck, precisely because they are trying to apply RWS to this deck rather than taking it on its own merits. ("How easily can I project rws onto this deck?" Is not the ultimate question to decide if a deck is good or not.) People who learn on RWS get stuck in their RWS box and have such a hard time thinking outside of it. I personally feel this handicaps them in ways they will never realize that they are handicapped) I just bought this deck as a first deck for me daughter (she's 26) because I don't want her stuck in the RWD mind-box. I think she'll learn well with it, and if she struggles for a long time getting nowhere, I'll suggest something else. I vehemently disagree that RWS is the best deck for beginners or even a beginner deck. I think it's an intermediate it advanced deck. (Extremely unpopular opinion, I realize). *I love Pappas squirel this is not an attack on him.
@@ultravioletpisces3666 Yeah I get what you're saying; "beginner deck" is an ambiguous concept, since everybody has their own journey of connecting to a deck. :)
The in-a-tin version of the deck just arrived for me, and here I came across your video. :) I've already worked with my regular size one for a few years, and I get amazed by how it often inspired me with a sense of exploring into the unknown, which is quite fitting to its name. I also find the images simple yet richly meaningful, like you said in the vid. There're a variety of decks, some with more emphasis on fixed symbolism while others on subconscious contemplation, and both are valuable. I'm glad you posted this vid with your sensibility, sincerity and sense of responsibility. 🌝
Omg !!! I know this is an older video but I gonna look at this deck in a different way !! Thank you so much !! I have just subscribed to your channel !! Thank you !! I can listen to you ALL DAY !
Thank you for pointing that out about horses and their natural inclination as a herd animal...beautiful. I initially jumped the wagon as well very early into my tarot journey and didn't know what I was doing with it and it was only last year that I snagged a second edition to know what I was missing. It does take time, if you're willing to connect with a deck...like you said..bring yourself to the table...love it.
I agree so much with you saying a tarot deck is 50% what you bring in. Ik love animals and nature I learn all I can find about them all my life. Ik will ask the Wild Unknown as a present for my mothers day for sure!
You are right...there is no worst tarot deck. Art is always subjective. Sometimes we are colorblind to a certain extent and miss out on what others can see or can relate to.
I'm a beginner but I'm definitely gonna get this deck. My only problem with it is the 6 of swords is not clear. I have seen a very experienced and skilled reader repeatedly read that card as the 6 of wands and not even realized it. The fact that is has the color rainbow at the top and the 6 of wands has the color butterfly at the top and the swords look too much like wands.
This is a really good point, and something I have struggled with as well. I'd prefer the butterfly interpretation for the 6 of swords because it implies movement from darkness to light (or in the RWS, choppy waters to calm waters.) And for me, the rainbow is too charged with other meanings for it to really work for me on the 6 of wands card. Even if there was a wreath on one of the sticks that was higher than the others. If I had my druthers, it would also feature a migratory animal that leaves and returns to a region each year - a caribou, maybe, or an arctic tern? It's a definite drawback to this deck - I only got there with sheer memorization and getting it wrong a billion times.
I’m quite new to tarot but love this deck. I don’t think it would have been easy to work with as a first deck but I was drawn to it. I don’t usually like decks with all animals on, but the animals she has chosen are so good and I love all the imagery
I can't believe I missed this. The Wild Unknown Video is one of my favorites from Papa Squirrel. I love me some Papa, his vibe is right up my alley. I am also a huge fan of Kim Krans entire body of work. What you say about poetry is true for many artforms. I am a painter and I have been SO moved by standing in front of a painting. It's a wonderful thing to bring your half to any work of art.
Omg you just gave me a new perspective to read 5 cups, the emperor and empress cards! I love the Wild Unknown Tarot because there is something magic about the illustrations that speak to me. I was drawn to the herophant (the crow with key) card and I knew I had to but it. I agree is not an easy deck for beginners like me and I was disappointed about the book because I wanted to know more in deep about the beautiful illustrations, animals, trees and paganism symbolism. I didn't know about the different types of trees so thank you for sharing. And thanks for sharing your life experience with horses. Maybe you can write an unofficial guide book to The Wild Unknown Tarot 😁 lots of love from Italy! Ciao
Oh my goodness, that is a HUGE compliment! I agree - the book wasn't as helpful as I had hoped. Tarot creator Carrie Mallon (who made the gorgeous "Spacious Tarot" did a card-by-card blog a few years ago. I haven't read it, but I know that people LOVE it. I'm not sure that I could improve on her work, as she is really, really knowledgeable. You can find it here: carriemallon.com/blog/the-wild-unknown-tarot-card-meanings/
To me that deck is very shamanic and also... neutral or "clean" (there is no race, no time period, etc).. it reads quite intuitively to me, I connected very well with it. It was not my first deck but I progressed in leaps and bounds using this deck (there are a couple of cards that are difficult for me), and even tbe "pipish" minor cards have so much clear symbolism for me... the minimal use of color I found profound and meaningful. I've heard the deck referred to as minimal to me but it doesn't feel that way to me. I immediatly connected the wild unknown as the woods being a metaphor for the wilderness of our own internal landscape (and I was using tarot for self development, shadow work, etc). This deck felt like a vision quest. The book gave me a springboard for my own internal work instead of just doing the work for me. This deck is my SOUL DECK.
This is the 6 or 7th deck i bought and omg the first time i held it in my hands it was like the most emotional i felt. Like i had become a father lol. I felt an immense connection and sadness for i thought I'd never love any other deck ever from then on. This was 4 years ago and i bought around 30 decks since then but i always come back to the wild unknown
I really enjoyed your thoughts on this. Thanks for sharing them! There are decks that don't appeal to me but I don't consider them bad. We're just not meant to be together . 😊💜 We all have our preferences.
Totally agree with your message : the wild unknown tarot deck is an amazing deck . It’s combines both : Elegantly simplistic and Rich emotional , cognitive symbolism . And I really enjoyed and learned from your poetry reference ! Thank you
I like how the meanings on the cards are not straight up in your face. Take the ace of pentacles for example, at a glance it only looks like a tree trunk that has been cut. But if you look closely enough, the image is also an illustration of the earth's core. Lava, magma, and how it forms quakes and fault lines and eventually the outer layer which gives birth to fertile land. Not everyone will see that, and I'm ok with that. The word Arcana means "secrets" or "mysteries" afterall.
Well said! I don't work with the Wild Unknown, but the the cards you have shown are really cool! I think the title is a RUclips formula. You make a strong statement in the title to get views.
