My toenail has had this purple line that will not grow out. I now have neuropathy on the same foot. I wonder if the two are related. I'm very scared of finding out that I possibly have cancer.
Don’t jump to cancer just yet. It’s a very small chance of that. It takes at least 9 months for a great toenail to grow out and 6 months for the smaller toenails. If this amount of time has passed, and the line hasn’t progressed, then you should get it examined. If it’s only be a short time, then monitor it to see if it grows out.
I've got red spot in both of my leg toe nails. One is darker and another is less darker. None of them are straigh line shape. I got these red spots very recently i guess. I noticed it today only. What should i do? Does it indicate any big disease or what
Mine was cause of a shoe size that keeps hitting my toe at the tip of the shoes and started growing this black line. That was almost 20 years ago and it’s still here
While it would be unusual for a lesion beneath the toenails on both feet, it’s definitely worth getting them checked out. Visit with a podiatrist who’s trained eye may know what’s going on. It’s likely that the doctor will biopsy the lesions to make sure that they are benign.
That's a great question. Shoe style should not impact toenail shape or health. If it's a well fitting shoe, there should be no issue with the toenails. Where we run into trouble is a dress shoe that has a pointed or tapered toe. That puts pressure on the nails and can cause them to thicken or become ingrown.
Hi doctor ! My toenails are black and brown on edges and they are like this on my right foot all fingers. They are like this since I was a child. I have had these for more than 20 years. Dr, my son is 14 yrs old and we just noticed his right leg second toe nail black lines and left leg 4th toe light lines. It is growing into his nails. No pain. We are not sure since how long was it there. Should we be concerned? Please advice.
I would watch it for a month or so and see if it's growing out. You'll know because it will be clear at the start of the nail (where it begins growth). Of course for peace of mind, you may want to get him checked.
Doc, my 4 years old Son has a black line on his left toenail on his big toe. when he was 1, he only had a black line, and now he has brown discoloration around him, should I be worried?
I thought my toenails had a fungal infection but a sample of the nails was tested in a lab. They concluded that there is no fungal infection present so I don't know because it has certain features of a fungal infection. My toenails, on my larger toes, are slightly lifted and discolored.
Not every thick and discolored nail is fungal. It can be because of trauma. Try taking a supplement called Biotin. It helps the health of then toenails.
I have a question, what happends if my big left toenail grows faster then my my big right side toenail? I notice the difference how fast the left side toenail grows faster then the right side big toenail?
Chemo can have an effect on your toenails. Interestingly, it doesn’t affect all the toenails the same way. The first step is to test the nail to see if there is a fungal infection. You’ll need to see a podiatrist for that. If there is, treating the fungus should clear the toenail. If not, there are some topical medications that can lighten the nail.
I have a brown line in my big toe form years ago I think I must of hit it because I’m clumsy and hit my toes a lot i don’t experience any pain of any sort, it hasn’t grown or anything, could it be because I hit my toe and some blood Cells thing happen or sum? My general rule is if there is a brown line or streak that doesn't grow out with the nail, then its worth taking a biopsy. While the chances of it being a melanoma is low, it's important enough to get the biopsy and get piece of mind.

I've had a black verticle line on my index finger, its not dark black, about 3mm, also got a black line on my big toe. It's been there for around 2 years. Skin around it seems normal and no pain or discomfort. Should I be worried?
I have a black purple to red spot on my toe nail. The black mark has mostly disappeared compared to how it was. Today I spotted a tiny spot on the other thumb toe nail? Is it possible to explain to me what it is and will it go?
My middle toenail on my right foot is very dark.I use tea tree oil on it everyday. Could it be, if I wear tight sneakers, that hurts my toe, that caused it? 6:246:24
Over the counter you can try Kerasal gel to lighten the toenails. Tolcylen solution will also work, but you need to get it from a podiatrist or dermatologist.
The 5th toenail often becomes darkened because of pressure from shoes. I would expect that this is the cause, rather than Gougerot Syndrome which generally affects the trunk, not the extremities.
If the dark lines grow out with the nail, then there is likely nothing to be concerned about. If they’re always there, you should get it checked. A podiatrist for the foot and a dermatologist for the hand.
I have a brown-like patch on both my big toenails. I'm not in pain or it is not aching any at all. I'm scared because as I search on google it says cancer.
Rule of thumb: if the brown patch grows out with the nail, there's nothing to worry about. If the brown spot stays, even when the nail grows, you should get it checked as a precaution. The fact that it's on both great toes makes me worry less.
i have the black line from last 4-5 years, but now it has covered 3/4th of my 3rd toe nail (it is growing and more than 3mm now)...but i also have the fungal infection on my legs... so is it due to fungal infection only? or it can be cancer? could you advice please??
It’s hard to say without seeing it. If a black line has been there for that long and growing, I would recommend getting a biopsy to make sure it’s nothing more.
If it’s been there that long, it is worth seeing a podiatrist to get a biopsy. Best case is it’s nothing and the whole situation is an inconvenience. Worst case is that it’s a melanoma and you caught it and can treat it.

It certainly sounds like a possible fungus infection. If the brown marks grow out with the nail then it’s nothing to worry about. Regardless, you should get it checked out.

It's hard to say without seeing it, but it could be the toenail lifting and separating from the nail bed in that area. See if it grows out with the nail. If it progresses, there's no concern. If it doesn't move, get it checked out.
So I’ve had a dent in my big toe since a young girl slamming toe in garage door. Since then, the dent (which i thought was blood clot under toe nail) never went away.
